I know she speaks too posh (despite her character being middle class), but I love RP and her accent is incredibly good. There´s a scene (I can´t remember if it´s from the first or second movie) she´s wearing a tiny skirt and Daniel Cleaver fancys it and she asks him "Do you like eeet?" with such an incredible and perfect intonation! love that line, and she´s not even english come on, i rate her accent 9 out of 10.
9 out of 10???? Wow! That's a high score : ) She did do a great job and the fact that she's from Texas makes it even better. Thanks for the comment : )
@@EatSleepDreamEnglish I didn´t rate it 10/10 because of the little mistakes that you very well pointed out. But she was great. Thanks for the reply Tom, and I have to say that you´re very good at these videos.
My British friends are very impressed with her fantastic job. Generally speaking, the British accent is way more difficult to pick up on rather than the American accent. I do think she did an amazing job. I doubt Tom Hanks has had any roles in British movies, but I really like the way he mimics the British accent, sounds very natural.
@@EatSleepDreamEnglish McAvoy did a perfect Philadelphia accent on Saturday night live in a skit when he hosted, blew me away, so subtle that I can hear it, but not easily replicate it, I'm from Pennsylvania and can hardly do a Philly accent...
He already has a British accent - a Scottish accent is a British accent. Scotland is in Britain. What you mean is an English accent, which he can do very well.
I love this film and her British accent and enjoyed your review so much! If I remember correctly, the scene she uses glottal T is in her family Christmas party and the man she is talking to (Colin Firth) is actually her very old friend, even they don’t remember that because they were too small. So I think it’s a perfect situation she changes her accent to the casual one.
Her accent was great. As was Gwyneth Paltrow in Sliding Doors (or Shakespeare in Love) and Meryl Streep as Mrs Thatcher - two other ones for you to look at.
She dropped the T and changed annunciations because she was Acting drunk in that scene. I think is is brilliant that she put that much thought into those intricate details and still kept a near perfect accent.

Aye up Tom, you’re back with a bang on RUclips 😃👍 I’m happy to see you again and listen to your very useful analysis, thanks. Yes, I definitely agree with you: Renèe Zellweger did a great job with diction, truly a great professional 👏 P.S.: I caught a glimpse of "Mark Darcy" 😊
@@EatSleepDreamEnglish Yep, you got it 😀, specifically he's quite charming and in general Mr. Darcy embodies the stereotypical idea of British man in the female imagination (for foreigners, I suppose) 😁
Like your videos Tom. Renée's name is pronounced Ren NAY. The accent mark indicates the stress on the second syllable and the double EE changes to a long A as in blue jay.
Hi there, Tom! I've been recently watching a lot of your videos (both new and old ones) and really love your content! I'd absolutely love a video of yours on John Lithgow's accent as Winston Churchill and/or Gillian Anderson as Margaret Thatcher in Netflix's "The Crown"! Or even a video of Gillian Anderson as Jean Milburn on Netflix's "Sex Education". Thank you! 🧡
I always thought Bridget Jones's voice in this movie was re-recorded by someone other than Renee Zellweger (who played the part). I thought I had heard reporting saying the same. Bridget's thoughts or diary readings could be anyone's voice, because we don't see who's speaking. But when Renee Zellweger speaks in this movie, the sound just doesn't match the face, in style or timing. It looks like a poorly done dialog replacement in post-production, possibly using Renee Zellweger, but more likely someone else, anyone else. I am surprised to consistently hear that it is her own voice.
Her accent in this is brilliant (as someone with the same upbringing as her character would have had). The guy in the video says there are some inconsistencies but we have those in real life too (particularly when drunk). Gwyneth Paltrow's accent in Shakespeare in Love is also very good
Agree very much about the drunken relaxations of RP. These are things Renée got right, and good for her! Altogether I found her British accent startling good, so much so that within her first two sentences in character, I stopped listening to her accent and concentrated on enjoying the film.
Yes! I think this is a great idea but one I'd like to do with an Italian/English expert so I'm going to wait until we are allowed to meet in person. Thanks for the suggestion Fiammetta.
Thank you for this interesting video...I appreciate your explanation about RP features. I'd love to hear actor Hugh Grant and his accent, obviously explained by you. Thanks
Hi, Tom, and thank you for this... sjuper interesting video! As for the "total nonsense" bit, is it possible that she didn't use a perfect RP just because in that part of the film she was a little drunk?
plm 6.00 glottal T. Bridgest has had 1 to many. She is not behaving like a lady and not talking like a lady. Obviously she is very nervous and does not know how to behave. I think the use of the glottal T is this scene fits perfectly.
Recently I saw a movie with the always amazing Carey Mulligan with a beautiful RP accent. But in this film, The Dig, it was Ralph Fiennes that impressed me with an accent completely different from what we are used to. I suppose it's a Mid-East accent but I'm not sure.
I juat died when i found out shes american doing british accent. Like howww? I watched Bridget Jones diary over and over again just to hear her voice and that accent. I really dont know shes American. Sooo good
i have a few: Robert Downey jr in Restoration and Sherlock Holmes movies, Forest whitaker in Crying Game. And Gwyneth Paltrow. She is generally praised for her British accent. I think its OK but not great, ie Sliding Doors and Emma. It was better in Shakespeare in Love but still not great. What do you think?
Hey Tom! Do you think you’d be interested in doing a video where your subscribers send you their best British accents and you rate them? It might be a tonne of fun!
This was interesting to watch. I have an American accent and when you were talking about saying those "Ts" I realized I say them like D's in words like "committed" and then you said that 10 seconds after I thought it haha.
I love your videos comparing accents!!! Why don't you analise Benedict Cumberbatch and Tom Holland? They had to change their natural accents for Avengers
I love the first 2 movies (not so much the last one). Her accent always surprised me, but like you said, you would associate this accent with well educated people and not to working class. I suppose the reason for this is the voice coach she had probably thought of RP for her due to the characters "job (publishing)". But.... Working on a more less posh accent I believe would have been harder, look at some British actors trying cockney. Then obviously as a learner of English (and now as a teacher) I think a less posh, more relaxed natural pronunciation requires time, I had to blend into the environment. Within time it just comes out naturally with a more or less strong accent (I had to practice many sounds that don't exist in Spanish, and for me dropping Ts was fairly easy). As an actress I assume she didn't have that much time to focus on different accents, so RP was the best option, even if it sounded too posh, especially when I think she had never impersonificated a British role before this role. It's not like we're talking about Meryl Streep (which for me is the best at imitating accents).
I would love to see you go over Rob Paulsen doing a British accent for two of the animated characters he does. 1. Pinky from Pinky and The Brain (I think he does a Cockney accent for Pinky) 2. Bobble from the Tinkerbell Movies.
In the movie I noticed her voice overs are more posh than her dialogue. I think this was done on purpose because she is speaking from the perspective of her diary and is trying to sound very posh and proper. But when she says "oi" to the crowd, suddenly not so posh. Also, I've noticed my friends get much more posh when they are around certain crowds and her saying "super" like that seemed sardonic. As someone who's lived in southern England (Brighton) for quite some time now, this accent was pretty well flawless.
Hello ! :) Can you do a video on prince Harry and William way of speaking ? They don't sound like the Queen or Prince Charles at all. I can't catch the details. :)

I feel like there were some more inconsistencies from the clips shown but I don't have the linguistic knowledge to pinpoint what she is doing wrong.
