  • I am planting Gemson and Norland potatoes in some very large containers. These containers have worked very well for me in the past when I have grown potatoes in them. I will show you how to plant potatoes and give you advice on how to prevent and treat common potato pests and diseases. I am going to plant some spring flowers in these pots as well. The flowers will look the pots look nice until the potatoes grow large and then the potatoes will cover the fading flower foliage.
I grow flowers and vegetables in Saskatchewan, Canada. My cold hardiness zone is zone 4. I have an average of 110 frost free growing days each year. The past few years have seen our temperatures go as low as -37C (-34.6F) to as high as 37C (98.6F). Come see what and how I grow in these conditions.

Howdy, Prairie Plantgirl!👋 Sweet to know how to plant flowers with potatoes.🥔
I know you're going to have another super duper harvest of tatars!👍I'm looking forward to those harvest videos!😃
I'm late getting to this video because we had 2 tornadoes hit our town 2 days ago. We are still without power in our neighborhood.
Lots of old trees were uprooted around town...no loss of life...praise the LORD.🙏
Me and my garden buddies got lots of damage to our gardens.😕
I trimmed what I think will continue to grow, directly sowed a few seeds for crops we can still drop seeds for, and sowed tomato and pepper seeds for starts for our fall gardens. I told my ladies we gotta put our gloves on and continue doing what brings us so much joy!👩🏾‍🌾
I'm also growing melon and okra starts for my garden buddies.
    Till next till!💕

I’m so sorry to hear you’ve had tornadoes! The tornadoes around here are very, very rarely as destructive as they seem to be in the states. I hope you all get power back and everyone has the what they need to get through the clean up and rebuild. You are doing a great job keeping your gardening ladies spirits up and planting and growing!

Your flower pots will look so lovely! Can't wait to see your pots when everything is growing.
We had a light frost again last night and again, one predicted next week. But my herbs are out and celery is planted with a tunnel. Today, the onions and leeks go out and potatoes are planted. Seeds are in the ground, except beans. And my corn is in the waiting another week to go out for sure.
It's still chilly here up north in BC.

It has been chilly here too. My tomatoes are not happy with me but I have them under heavy frost blanket. We just have to be patient for the warm weather to find us again up here in Canada.

Thank you for your videos- love from New York. I forgot to let my Potatoes dry and skin over, after I cut them.. I did it all in one mad rush as I too was late this year, because we had a seed potato shortage and so I got a big bag of potatoes from a farmer, with long tubers and so I picked the best and just went at it. I wish I watched this a few weeks ago.

I have cut and immediately planted my potatoes. They still usually grow just fine. If your soil is very cold and wet you have more chance of a fresh cut potato rotting.

My mum had potato bugs until she started planting onions near the potatoes. She did that when I was about 8 and we have not had potato bugs since. Her garden was huge so attacking potato bugs was very time intensive and planting an onion every 5 or so potato hills was enough to keep them away. Putting an onion or two in the planters would discourage potato bugs from moving in.

I had some supermarket spuds that grew sprouts about one foot long. I just dug a trench and laid them flat end to end. Covered them with leaves and now they are coming up!

Terrific video. I just planted seed potatoes into fabric pots and planted ranunculus around on top. My pots aren’t nearly as big hopefully I can still get potatoes.

Thank you ❤ very helpful. I will do something similar on a smaller scale. Zone 4 and learning how to grow in this zone.

Glad you found this helpful. It will take time to adjust your knowledge and expectations to this new zone. Be patient with yourself and the plants. Everything can take longer to “wake up” from that deep winter dormancy.

Planted a few beginner celery, they quickly turn white shriveled up died. Thinking celery needs special sun hardening. Maybe celery needs to be started in direct sun. It's been warm and already found out celery can't handle cool.

    • @PrairiePlantgirl
      @PrairiePlantgirl  Месяц назад +1

Celery need a lot of water and they like sun. I find they do better when they are planted in cool weather. Mine have had frosty weather for weeks and still look healthy. I would guess if yours turned white they did not have enough sun or water or they got really hot before they had acclimated. We have been getting around 37-43F here at night and I am not protecting my celery.

@@PrairiePlantgirl OK, think the acclimating more will help. This is tricky. Heard farmers cover full grown celery with soil to blanch secret.

I have never grown celery but I have a healthy perennial herb called lovage that provides an intense celery flavour to dishes. I literally do nothing to make but grow.

What a great video! Your knowledge and experience are very helpful. Those are great pots - any idea if they are available somewhere? I planted Norlands in a number of smaller pots, they are growing like crazy (Toronto). I was thinking of using 10 gallon grow bags next year but those pots are so much more attractive.
