  • I love to grow large vine crops like squash and watermelon but my garden space doesn't allow much space for sprawling plants. To solve this problem I use a variety of trellises to get the vines growing up instead of out. This allows me to grow lots of vine crops in a smaller amount of space.
I grow flowers and vegetables in Saskatchewan, Canada. My cold hardiness zone is zone 4. I have an average of 110 frost free growing days each year. The past few years have seen our temperatures go as low as -37C (-34.6F) to as high as 37C (98.6F). Come see what and how I grow in these conditions.

Thank you. We are off to a cold, windy start this year. Hopefully the weather will turn around and the plants can catch up.

Always love to see what you are doing!! There is no way I could grow my melons outside here. Greenhouse it is! Thanks for the reminder that melons are heavy feeders. How often will you continue to fertilize them during the Summer?
You look dressed for Summer😊I am still wearing a sweater all day. Have a beautiful day!!

I try to give a weekly water soluble fertilizer (higher phosphorus- middle number).

Been a really wet and random May for me also 8B in Canada. Only thing that really failed was my corn since it wasn’t really hot enough to prevent them from rotting after sprouting…decided to just give up on it and use the space for things that will be more productive like peppers and eggplants. I also started watermelons indoors and had them inside longer then expected this year but luckily I have a pretty good LED light setup so they are doing fine. Just transplant the melons this week. Hopefully things pick up here for the rest of June.

Am growing 1 plant of sugar baby watermelon and minnesota midget cantaloupe for the first time, in containers, got someof the wire squash and cuke trellises from veseys this year for them. Might also rig up whatever else i have if they sprawl more than expected lol. Hoping for some success!
Glad to see the titan squash trellis, i was considering it but left it for this year as I have to make more space for it! Looks pretty strong!

The titan trellis needs a lot of space , but it works well.

I enjoyed this! I’m amazed that you can grow mellons and winter squash, you are zone three I think. I have started using that Hortinova trellising this season, I have peas and cucumbers 🥒 growing on it.

It gets quite warm and very sunny here in the summer. It’s just a matter of having enough hot days to keep these plants happy. I have to pick my varieties with number of growing days in mind.
We have been upgraded to zone 4 where I am. I’m not sure I would count on that. Really the zones are just about how cold it gets in winter over a ten year average. The determining factor of what can be grown is frost free days, summer warmth, and sunshine hours.

I've tried a few vines like sugar baby, honey dew, pumpkin...but nothing really performed well..I'm hoping to find a good variety of cucumbers for 5a..although one year my cucumbers did amazing just not sure what kind 🤔

Sugar baby is supposed to be great for short seasons. I have had better luck with moon and stars. You may need to cover your plants on cold nights at the end of the season and take advantage of every warm day before the cold really sets in.
