  • Secretary of Transportation Pete Buttigieg on some Republicans opposing federal funding for the rebuilding of the Baltimore’s Key Bridge: “This really needs to be a bipartisan priority, and anybody who views it as otherwise, I’m hoping they will reconsider because it could be your district that is the next one to be struck by tragedy.”

We have to drive over a bridge to get out of our neighborhood. It's not a "big", "complicated" or long bridge, it's a small bridge over a little creek. But we have to drive over it nonetheless. Our bridge was in bad shape and in danger of collapse. We felt like we were risking injury (and possibly death) every time we left our neighborhood. Trump did NOTHING about our little bridge. But Joe Biden did. Our bridge was repaired and we may now safely leave our neighborhood. As I said, this wasn't an "important" bridge in the grand scheme of things, but it was very important to us! I would like to take this opportunity to thank Pres. Biden for making life a little safer for us, for easing our minds about the safety of driving over our little bridge, and for looking out for "normal" Americans--no one in our neighborhood is wealthy, it's just your average middle-class neighborhood, no one here is "important" or famous. We're all just normal, average, everyday Americans. And Joe Biden was looking out for us--just your average everyday American.

Maybe, you should look a little bit closer to the laws that govern this type of accidents.
There are international laws in place for this type of accident which USA is also a signature to.
What that means is that there is actually a cap to the amount of damages the shipping company can be made liable for.
This is quite a large amount though but in this case, it will probably only cover the actual payment to the families of the diseased and maybe the rebuilding of the bridge.
What it will most likely not cover is the loss to Baltimore harbor due to the losses incurred by the fact that the harbor is closed and will be closed for some time.
That's just the way the laws work for these type of accidents.
That may not seem fair but that's basically what it is today.

The bridge had little to do with the accident. It was considered to be a strong design. The problem is the only place for a ship the size of the container ship to transit was right through the relatively narrow middle section. It's a very tricky navigation route and the port should be sending tugboats along with vessels this size to ensure accidents like this don't happen. Almost guaranteed that will be a new policy taking effect.

One of the factors that helped Britain become the powerhouse of the Industrial Revolution was that private concerns involved in bulk transport were subsumed into national control.
Private ownership of often poorly maintained toll roads, bridges, etc. was bought out, with compensation and national funds used for refurbishment, rebuilding, and new construction. The idea that private enterprise should be responsible for and profit from transport infrastructure is a medieval idea, which leads to deteriorating infrastructure, accidents and deaths, since profit and dividends ALWAYS take priority over maintenance and improvement.
This is why the current US Administration HAD to introduce an Infrastructure Bill that has already improved transport and created MILLIONS of jobs by which private enterprise has already benefited without having to invest a cent.

Let's face reality: when that bridge and ship channel were designed, container ships this large weren't around. Of course it should be a fully funded federal government project to rebuild. If there's insurance money to offset the costs then go for it at the right time. Like the majority of aid for Ukraine, the majority of the money will go back into your own economy.

    • @mstunameow
      @mstunameow Месяц назад +2

Yep, and it's a very tricky navigation route. There's a great video on the Oceanliner Designs channel that explains what happened very well. There were no tugboats accompanying the ship. Tugboats likely could have averted the tragedy. They are so powerful they can basically create a reverse current in the water by aligning their thrusters in a particular way that can redirect even large ships very quickly.

In Las Vegas NV, they changed their airport name from McCarran (racist) to Harry Reid.
(It suppose to be Las Vegas International Airport, in my view. Airport is representing the city, not an individual.)
McCarran, a Democrat, served as a senator from Nevada from 1933 to 1954.
McCarran, after World War II, was instrumental in limiting the number of Jewish refugees allowed to enter the U.S., made anti-Semitic remarks and blocked some of President Franklin Roosevelt’s Jewish judicial nominees.
McCarran was also the principal sponsor of the McCarran Internal Security Act, which required Communist organizations to register with the federal government and established the Subversive Activities Control Board.
