- Official Music Video for the track "Dark Matter" off of the album "Modern Primitive".
"Hey Folks, Steve here.
Enjoy this little video adventure we made for 'Dark Matter', a track from Modern Primitive where I get to steam punk out a bit.
The idea was to create an alien type landscape where each band member was filmed at a different speed and then brought together in various shots.
I had to learn the song backwards! This left me knowing the future for a few days after the shoot, and I discovered all is well.

Intro riff starts... My 8 year old daughter from the other room: "... are you watching that video with 3 Steve Vais again?!"
LOL
Lol!! Heck yea brother
Lol
lmao
Love it !!!
This is definitely the most Steve Vai thing I've seen in a while.
I think that "a Steve Vai thing" should be on the dictionary
@@Lucaluciano-sc2db check out his solo on the song “Diamond Ring “ by Jonah Nilsson, quite amazing !
If Steve Vai and Steve Vai had a baby...
Director : how much visual fx do u want?
Steve vai : yes
How basic are these comments?
Yes.
He obviously didnt want anyone to cover this song
No doubt man, it would be a tough one, it could be done but man you would realy have the want to do it.
Obviously some looping and definitely have to have the backing track of the drums and Bass, you'd be hard pressed to find mainly the bass player, you've got to be a real beast to handle the bass like that guy, just the bass guitar looks heavy and he's handling it like a toy.
Loving the drums too it seems like you've got to be taking some kind of supplements for that kind of energy. Yep indeed it would certainly be a handful to cover that one. You see interviews with Steve and he seems pretty normal but it's stuff like this that proves he's truly a freaking nutcase haha lol😈
@@robertpado6083 or just don't cover it at all lool
Lol!
I tried, then I became an alcoholic.
I am pretty sure there is an alien who covered this song in area 51
FOR THE LOVE OF CHROMA KEY
@@k8ict_gg yeah
hahahaha x'D
@@k8ict_gg that's funny, but.. what's wrong with using green screen? I think the video is very cool!
Let’s be honest. There isn’t really a cool guitar music video. Watching live is the best.
LOL
This video looks like an After Effects tutorial, but without the explanation part
Im laughing so hard right now 😂😂😂
It was Resolve/Fusion, not AE.
Actually, the guitar did explained it, didn't hear it?
So true, it is something extrange that an artist of this level didn't realize how bad is the video before make it public.
I about fell out of my chair laughing at this comment, because it is so true. And yet I still enjoyed the video. That is the reason I like Vai, I can never explain Vai, I just like the crazy stuff he comes up with. Thanks for the laugh!
I think Steve Vai should give us all an honest-to-goodness metal album. Just, tune 'er down, shred and go for it.
Certain Death yeah, dude. Nothing but “Bad Horsie” stuff for 45-60 minutes is something I’ve hoped for since forever from him. First time I heard Bad Horsie I was like “WHY DONT WE HAVE AN ALBUM OF THIS STUFF?!”
@@augustussohn893 , I know, it needs to happen
I just got goose bumps reading this 2 year old tweet...
I finally figured it out - Steve doesn't bend the strings, he bends his guitar and the strings answer with cries for mercy
This is weird. Even for Steve.

Exactly!
I wouldn't be surprised If he summoned copies of himself to play this live. Soul power
This is just perfect harmony in mess. Absolutely one of the best
It's very good tune! His guitar sounds amazing on it....
This makes Primus appear normal.
Primus sucks
Alright guys. You can like Primus and Vai. Its not illegal
Yeah unlike Primus, the lyrics don't suck in this song.
most retarded thing i've heard all day
Now that's a goal well worth having.
Of all the great guitarists of the 80's, I think Steve Vai has the most imaginative music, the best videos, and the coolest style. His music is also the most relevant of any of the artists from that period without losing too much of what made the 80's great in terms of extreme technicality. So much taste and lyricism in every bit of what he plays. Really special.
Satch has managed to keep very timely too
Yep
Very well said sir. I have to add Pat Metheny into the mix too for the 80's but his style/ genre of music is completely different to Steve's.
Obvious troll, they were his teachers
@@psychvision101 agreed
Imagine hearing this before you hear tender surrender...
Sadra Malekian you’d never come back hahaha. Steve is the man
I heard this before Tender Surrender
I don't have to imagine anything.I just wanna watch and hear Steve Vai.
Acabei de fazer isso, esse cara é muito bom
You need 3 Steve Vais to play this

You need 4 actually
Gawd.....the thing I love about Steve is that he is ALWAYS growing and trying new things. So bad ass!

So the next G3 tour is going to be Steve and 2 holograms of himself?
He can actually multiply himself, there are no effects in this video. He’s just that awesome.
HAHAHAHAHA
the legend states that the other two Steve Vais come from parallel universes
I'd go :D
I sure hope so.
this song is to epic that need 3 steve vai's to play it
It's brilliant. Repulsive yet exhilarating. Strange and serene harmonically with a kick ass attitude. Love it or hate it, you can't deny he is a master of his craft! He's quite incredible in my humble opinion.
Roland Guilford Totalmente de acordo 👍
"Repulsive yet exhilarating."
Couldn't have said it better.
Repulsive... yes.
One can be the best guitarist ever and makes crap music. He is this one.
I got so used to the Ads on RUclips, when the video loaded I thought I was watching an ad for Ice Breakers Cool Mint.
Ryan Reynolds introduces every video now.
LOL
Lol
The universe can barely contain 1 Vai .... but to have 3 would cause a massive rift in the space time continuum and the entire universe would be swallowed into a black hole. Dark Matter with 3 Vai's.... I see what you did there Steve 😎
Just being full of himself as always
NASA was very very upset he was standing on the moon. It nearly caused an international crisis.
It was a fake moon standing. Tons of evidence to support that. Steve never left low earth orbit because of the Van Allen radiation belts.
''yeah bro i just tuned it"'
Extremely artistic. Not for everyone. real zappa shit going on here.
chris tsintavis I was pondering how Zappa was as equally influential to all the guitar heros over the years as Hendrix, during the video. (ex.: Steve Vai, Mattias IA Ecklundh, Devin Townsend)
Via is beyond Zappa in many ways. By the way, Zappa was not so impressive. He never accomplished a formal education and his reasons for not acquiring a formal education are typical of the comments of typical dropouts. Zappa wanted respect, so he should have finished his education instead of dropping out and then pissing on an institution to overcome his shame.
@@samuellorenzo986 Well, I can't argue with Steve Via. But, I think that Vai shows more sophistication relative to composition in this song than anything Zappa ever composed. I am sooo impressed with this song!
@@samuellorenzo986 Music school. Yeah, I'm not talking about other education that has nothing to do with music like anthropological history or something like that. Many institutions of higher learning have schools of music. Vai attended Berklee College of Music in Boston, I don't know if he finished, but Vai was awarded an Honorary Doctorate of Music from Berklee. (facts from Wiki)
Whatever, I like both Vai and Zappa, anyway.
@@samuellorenzo986 No, I said the reasons Zappa gives for not going to college "are typical of the comments of typical dropouts." I do not make the implication that Zappa was a high school drop out. How could you make such a mistake.
Your comments show that you don't know how to read or think. Perhaps you are a dropout yourself lol.
Ice pimp and floating space guitar, two things I never realised I needed.
@Xenia Dukic The whole outfit is awesome! As is the floating space guitar, I am incredibly happy that both these things exist, in the same video none the less :D
This song is one if the best things Vai have done in years! This is just beautiful and perfect
I like how the band is not locked in to each other, everyone is on a separate journey but it is complimentary and steve playing mostly melodic but saving the shreddy bits for the right moments. Excellent workout for the ears!
Everytime I listen to it I love it more and more, phenomenal trio! LOVE IT, LOVE IT, LOVE IT!!!

Probably the most complete guitarist ever! Amazing technique and beautiful composition
To those "experts" who say Steve Vai has no "feel" I guarantee he can play anything you ask him to, and he'll do it with all the "feel" you desire... But other pro's can't play Steve Vai's material!!!!
This sounds like a song off of the ultra zone album
Yes indeed... " Here I am"

I just can't ever get enough of this song, and the video matches the song perfectly.
Definitely one of my favorite Steve Vai songs
Wow, Vai is truly one of a kind! That drum performance was the greatest 3 min expenditure of energy in percussion history.
2018 : normal song
2022 : meme
@The Mus1ciaN This is much more enjoyable.
Nothing in this song is normal actually
Love this song though, play it pretty much every day for the last 2 weeks.

Steampunk Vai , you are awesome Steve , big inspiration the best of the best!!!!!!! rock on !!!!
Amazing music. Kept me interested to the very last second. References to Hendrix and older Vai. Masterpiece.
I think I heard a hint of stevie ray as well!
Absolutely legendary. Thx.
I think Steve is 30 to 50 years ahead of everything else.
Awesome video and song.
This is a brilliant composition. It drags your ear from one side of the room to the other. And those dissonant melodies all wrapped around a funky groove like a cherry ice pop on a hot summer day. Damn Mr Vai, you did it again.
Beyond the incredible. Totally unpredictable. This is Vai.
Omg that drummer's moves are like he's moving backwards in time. The whole song is a whole new physical phenomenon. Bravo Steve! You did it again! 👏
you know what ... now that i came back and hear it again ... this song has some magic on it ...
Goin' down to south park gonna have myself a taaahme.

What the hell is this atonal madness??? I love it the more I listen.
Even astronomers can't proof what dark matter is..
But STEVE VAI easily proved it with music ..
Just can't get more Vai than this. Magnifique.
Wow. First time I ever got stoned just by playing a video.
The truth is out. Steve Vai's grooves are actually psychedelics in music form
This is a weird video... 😂😂😂

So many moments. You don't know what the destination is but it's down the yellow brick road
You know what I like the most about this song it's how pissed off the drummer is, he plays with incredible anger yet controlled.
Crazy stuff. That whole odd time section in the middle.
Reminded me of King's X

I’m obsessed! Cannot get enough of Steve Vai!
Don't know if the vid was fun to make, but it sure was fun to watch!
I love that rythm
Massive Vai and Satch fan, greatest guitarists in human history.......but this just isn't for me personally. Appreciate the work gone into making this video though. 👍
Somehow sounded out of tune for most of the track.
@@barrybackhouse-smith5677 - Steve's gone for that Hendrix vibe so I guess that's a part of the appeal. I'm more into his Passion and Warfare/Alien Love Secret guitar playing personally, the man's a genius without question but sometimes I struggle with a few songs of his that don't have the same impact......no denying it's fantastic playing though.
I've been a fan of his for years ever since hearing Blue Powder. He is sometimes a bit zany for my liking but I have listened to him regularly for 30+ years now so I know what i like of his stuff and what i don't. He is my favourite rock metal guitar player but his talent for orchestration is also genius. I really like the orchestration of For the Love of God. Esp. when the oboe comes in with the melody theme. Brilliant!
@@SigilShorts - Horses for courses - he's talented I agree but it just ain't finger lickin good enough for me .

Great.Out of this world 👏🏻👏🏻
I think we can all agree that most of the time less is more. Steve has a fantastic sense for the flamboyant, he would be best served with creative people of a higher standard so that they would lift his profile to the same level of his great creative talent.
Steve, strange but awesome.
Still my hero from the first listen! And I'm a fan since "Eat ’Em and Smile"...
Stunning piece of music! And a Steve Vai who is still new and different...
And now I take my guitar and play...
The more I listen to this song, the better it is. In fact, the sound of his guitar really really good on this tune.
Bad ass drumming 👌🏻👌🏻👌🏻🤟🤟🤟 Steve Vai the God of Guitar 🙏🙏🙏

Mano, esse Jeremy não cansa não? O maluco toca numa força, levanta pra caramba os braços... Deve tá com umas dores ferradas no ombro!
Taking the instrument to its limits, Absolutely amazing!
Absolutely great, thank you Steve
That was awesome
Surprised to see so many commenters being unhappy with this song. When I heard the tune I thought "Well here we go, Hendrix, Funk, Prog Rock, and Fusion in a short jam style tune."
It's not my intention to sound pedantic, but usually, people who crap in tunes like this one are fellas that feel more attracted to the typical ultra melodic music, like the one Satriani makes. So as soon as they hear something that goes in the more experimental/weird vibe, they complain about it. I bet whatever you want they also despise Frank Zappa.
But at the end of the day is just a matter of preference, so kudos to anyone who enjoy Dark Matter, and for those who don't, I hope other Vai tunes do it for you :)
I'm not disappointed, it's just that as new savants have arisen, Vai just isn't impressive anymore. I'm not saying I can do it, but there are plenty of musicians who have far surpassed him in skill and creativity these days. Maybe I'm just an asshole and modern technical metal and the rise of neo prog has spoiled me.

@@bolognabong I think this is one of those cases where "to each his own" applies, cause damn... that tune was truly awful. A perfect example of a bunch of kids trying to sound as complex as possible just because they can. On top of that, most of the guitar parts sounded to me like a bunch of exercises glued together. It reminds me of early Scale the Summit albums, where they basically did the same: to play as many notes as they could.
The good thing for those kids is they are young, so they have time to mature and improve a lot as a composers. Some day they'll realize most of the time "less is more" & "it's not the amount of notes you play but the silences among them, what really matters".
Now, since that's what you love, it's pretty obvious why Steve Vai sounds unimpressive to you, he has never composed like that and for sure never will. Also, he has never been a metal player; yeah... sure, you can find metal elements here and there scattered over a good amount of his tunes, but that doesn't make him a metal guitarist.
I disagree about Steve not being creative anymore, but I'm not going to write the reasons cause that's probably the most subjective part of all this conversation, so if to you Vai has lost his creativity, who the hell am I to tell you you're wrong?
Finally, I agree he has been surpassed in the technical department. That happened long time ago when guys like Ron Thal, Mattias IA Eklundh, Buckethead and Guthrie Govan appeared more than 10 years ago. So, it's pretty obvious the new kids that today are pushing the guitar from a technical point of view are going to be better than him. Eventually, the same will happen to them.
And no, you're not an asshole for not liking Vai anymore :)
Regards.
@@bolognabong "Maybe I'm just an asshole and modern technical metal and the rise of neo prog has spoiled me."... very much this.. and hey, thats not a bad thing and im not having a dig. its cool its, its different, its progression... but this steve track is like taking pages from things that have been done for decades now and has somehow managed to bring a whole new approach and style to something that has existed for sooo long (which i think is true artistry) and even though it has all the hallmarks of modern production all over it, it does not rely on it as entirely as the polyphia tunes
