They’re right, as a sonar supervisor on submarines, surface warships were not really a threat or concern by themselves. It is their helicopters that are dangerous. A submarine can’t outrun a helicopter or airplane, if they find you. The best way to find a submarine is with another submarine, then airborne sub hunters.

My story (STGSN at the time): Off the coast of Africa we got notified of a Russian sub exiting the Strait of Gibraltar into the Atlantic and I was on-duty. I picked it up passively and tracked it for about 150 miles as it headed north. It stayed above the thermocline, which made tracking somewhat easier, and one of my shipmates was able to identify it using another piece of sonar gear based on the noises it made (e.g. number of props, blades on each prop, engine harmonics, etc.). Since our mission was the Persian Gulf we didn't follow it but passed on our data to the fleet up north once I started losing her. Then it was about 5 boring months in the middle east and nearby waters. I wonder why the captain didn't go active on her, being that the sub clearly knew their location so going active wouldn't have given their position away. Going active poses several tactics problems, including counter-response scenarios HMS Northumberland would have to prepare for. One could suggest Tom Clancy's fictional Crazy Ivan tactic was in play, given the parallel course Northumberland (ahead / abeam) relative to the Russian sub. The other problem going active is it gives the Sub an instant firing solution and additional frequency data. This is particularly important if the decision to go active is made after the Subs impact with the towed array. Thus, I suspect the Captain would not go active with a fully functional array, then compound his defensive posture limitations once the array was determined to be permanently damaged. Good hunting.

Having seen the full documentary I have to conclude the Cumberland is an old ship. Depending on simple electronics that fails randomly. Could not be true that a mission is hanging on a towed array sonar. It need more modern sonar next to the tow.
I love your series regarding adventures of NorthHumberlans. First they discovered a Russian boat trying to listen team converstations with their family, so they conviscated all team mobile phones; on second serie that boat find a Russian submarine, but their sonar equipment went down, so they had to get back to port; and in this series, they finally found a Russian ship trying to enter "secret port"? How it can be secret, when Russians know it and you are publishing that port location to RUclips? Anyway, they had more problems within a crew, so they just left and finally reached back to UK port and their crew was threated against stuffy nose and Covid. Glad, that UK war against Russia went well this time.
The Russian Sub aimed for the sonar, excellent and brilliant move by the Russians, politically correct log entry by the English Captain to keep everyone happy 😆
I have to ask a question. Does the towed sonar array have a redundant system such as the old style sonar head or perhaps a spare towed array on board ship that can be deployed to replace the damaged array?
Arrays take up a lot of space on board. They might be able to replace some of the microphones and other sensitive equipment attached to the array but if the cable itself is damaged then it's GG.
Well the ship itself does have sonar elements on its hull but the towed array vastly increases their capabilities since it can sink down deeper and when it comes to a sonar array there is no real substitute for physical size, the longer or larger the array is the better it can perform. But I'm not sure toomany ships have a full spare on board, a few km long cable spooled up is not a small or light thing.
@connorjohnson4402 there are 2 types of subs. Boomers and fast attacks. Boomers carry nuclear missles and can devastate 100s of cities. Fast attacks hunt down the Boomers and any other ocean craft. They also may carry small amounts of nuclear weapons.
An excellent Captain! He kept calm even as the Russian submarine crashed into his ship. Also, the performance of a crew member was noticed and resulted in a promotion. The Royal Navy is a very valued member of our NATO forces. Everyone serving there can be proud.

Honestly, there are some real problems presented in this couple of videos that are quite concerning, from constant equipment failures (including one that compromised the primary mission of the ship) to being unable to handle adverse sea states the ship is built to operate in.
Fantastic job staying on top of those grubs! And congrats to Phoebe! That was well deserved. Passion land focus is a good combination. Well done. From a brother in Denmark
I've only been watching for 9 minutes and already they have had a broken sonar and mysterious poisonous fumes from something burning that they cannot identify. It makes me worry that perhaps British warships lack proper maintenance or funding and are not up to the task assigned to them.
I would NOT want to serve on this ship! We would have called this a complete "clusterf**k." 1)They went to search for Russian submarines and only carried enough sonar buoys for one helicopter flight. Seriously? 2) While trying to isolate an overheating, smoking transformer, they trip the wrong breaker and shut down the entire navigation system. All while conducting an anti-submarine operation. 3) They were completely played by the Russian sub. The sub sat around and waited for them to find it. When they couldn't find it, the sub went to the surface and said, "Here we are!" Then when the ship took the bait and started tracking them again, the Russians took out their sonar. Basically, the Russians told them, "If we were playing for real, you would all be fish food right now!" I was embarrassed for them from just watching this. They seemed to think that it was bad luck. No, it was utter incompetence. When the CO said that it was an accident on the part of the Russians, you could see on his face that he didn't believe that. The CO should be relieved of command. Just my opinion....
@@jamesrussell7760 The ship failed miserably even if those were just "training exercises." In light of how badly they failed, whether it was real or training, the CO should still be relieved of command. He clearly doesn't know how to handle situations such as these. Thank you for an interesting story. It was so nerve racking to know the russian submarine could torpedo that English Ship at any time after establishing visuals and audios on them.
Could yes, but the probability was very, very low. A Russian Captain isn't going to start WWIII, just because somebody is tracking him. The Northumberland also has 4 torpedotubes of her own, + torpedoes on its helicopter, so it's not like they were defenceless.
when the sonar was down they were completely defenseless. plus russian subs are armed with supersonic shkval torpedo. no chance. they didn't even knew where the sub was for 24 hours. while the sub had eye on the ship all the time.

Their tow boat fleet is the strong branch of the Navy.
20 years old and driving a state -of-the-art warship? Wow! I have a well-paying IT career, but I'd honestly give it up for this type of experience!
Cutting edge he says in the opening...😂😂😂 must be joking!
The Russian Sub aimed for the sonar, excellent and brilliant move by the Russians, politically correct log entry by the English Captain to keep everyone happy 😆
I enjoyed this very much Annie from Australia
Thank you Crew of the HMS Northumberland 💛💙💛💙💛💙💛💙💛💙
I have to ask a question. Does the towed sonar array have a redundant system such as the old style sonar head or perhaps a spare towed array on board ship that can be deployed to replace the damaged array?
Arrays take up a lot of space on board. They might be able to replace some of the microphones and other sensitive equipment attached to the array but if the cable itself is damaged then it's GG.
@jastinguy more of a surprise they didn't send one of their own subs. As versatile some surface ships are, a sub is the best sub hunter.
@@billmoretz8718 Given that they are a strategic asset for nuclear deterence i don't think British has many that take on the hunter/killer role.
😂😂😂😂😂😂
To stupid to realize that the Russian disabled their sonar, while the sat waiting to see if the Russians noticed their presence😂😂 this is so funny , what do you Liberal News Stations, now have to say ,how are you going to LIE to the world????😂😂😂😂😂
NATO is danger to world and brings in ww3
Honestly, there are some real problems presented in this couple of videos that are quite concerning, from constant equipment failures (including one that compromised the primary mission of the ship) to being unable to handle adverse sea states the ship is built to operate in.
Fantastic job staying on top of those grubs! And congrats to Phoebe! That was well deserved. Passion land focus is a good combination. Well done.

Looks like a training exercise with their own HMS sub.
Was it? Wargames
The sonar clash was confirmed by the MoD, didn’t look like a training exercise.
Shhh don't tell the world we cant even protect our own shores anymore.
Does not make me sleep well at night or day, for that matter. Britts need to step up their game!
Pretty impressive for a skimmer crew. But at the end of the day, there are only two kinds of warships: Submarines, and targets.
Yet 750 U boats on the bottom of the ocean tells a different story.
@@ricbarker4829 those were submersibles, not submarines😉
James looking like a slave
I've only been watching for 9 minutes and already they have had a broken sonar and mysterious poisonous fumes from something burning that they cannot identify. It makes me worry that perhaps British warships lack proper maintenance or funding and are not up to the task assigned to them.
British warships apparently have the same reliability as British automobiles.
Another great one, the sub was not damaged ?
Cool down, mate. All those "emergences" were training exercises.
@@jamesrussell7760 The ship failed miserably even if those were just "training exercises." In light of how badly they failed, whether it was real or training, the CO should still be relieved of command. He clearly doesn't know how to handle situations such as these. I would certainly not want to serve on a ship under his command. You can agree or disagree; this is just my opinion.
Last thing a sub will do…wait around to show itself.
you are absolutely right, it's a shame and a pitty to see the level of Royal Navy now., salute from France

If feel so incredibly bad for all the sea life that active/passive sonar pings does. I don't think people actually understand the damage we're doing to sea life with our technologies

Well done video. Good job by all hands and a special congratulations to Phoebe. James USA
buddy of mine in the navy said everyone was really pissed off when this show aired because they made training exercises look like real life problems. the entire "mission" was a training exercise.
no
There you go. I twigged early on it was a training exercise.
Lies. They just looked bad
God bless these fine lads!
THE SUB SHWON IN THE VIDEO ARE 2 DIFFERENT TYPES, anyone can notice, one has 3 antennas/masts and the other had 2. with the incapability shown of the crew in this, i'm sure they just patched an older video of a russian sub or maybe even used their sub to foreshadow their incompetitiveness. MAN THE ROYAL NAVY IS A LAUGHING STOCK
not to mentioon a russian sub on a mission will never surface
Yeah, It's obviously IMPOSIBLE that the sub retracted one mast between shots.
If anyone is a laughing stock, it's you and your "facts".
Congratulations phoebe
It was nice to see the CS(US navy term for cooks/chefs) get his quals in and not be a NUB anymore and how happy he was about it. Getting out of NUB status on a ship makes life so much better. Watch bill is better than “NUB, wake up! Shitter is clogged, so and so got sick, inspection at turnover so housekeeping and sweepers.
i think the sub knew they were there the whole time, the heli and the loud ship
If the Russians "knew they were the whole time",
why would they go shallow and stick out their periscope & Radar mast ?
Good documentary
It was only a training exercise. In real life, the Russian sub would have immediately known if sonar buoys were in the water.
the buoys are passive, aren't they?
@@Redfvvgthey can be both. But the splash of landing in the water is detectable.
Knowing about them and being able to do something about it
are two very different things.
Submarines do not intentionally hit ships.
Excellent video .
Great doco!
I was on he USS Curts FFG 38 in the late 80's we were doing the same thing looking for Soviet Ballistic Missie submarines in the Northern Pacific
Very good video from the USA
It's a 1992 commissioned ship - at eol. But can work for education and basic training.
Thank you for this wonderful glimpse into the Royal Navy. Very well done, great photography too. I was hoping to see the hull in dry dock to see the extent of damage to the sonar array, but I can understand why that might be top secret. Was there any protest made to the Russians?
Very good show. the intro was a bit long, but otherwise excellent job !
Is the Russian sub called “Red October?”
@troyjudge8466-No, this isn’t the Red October sub.
@@donnawentz2221 just a little levity here.
Exactly!

According to the story, it was a Typhoon class sub.
Last time I saw it , it was in Miami Beach
My son served in the Australian Navy for 11 yrs supporting in the Persian Gulf
Now I know why they never paint submarines yellow. Paul got it all wrong!
I unfortunately think there are now way too many people who don't know who paul McCartney is. Referring to the yellow submarine. Lol no worries "I see you"

Thank you for an interesting story. It was so nerve racking to know the russian submarine could torpedo that English Ship at any time after establishing visuals and audios on them.
Could yes, but the probability was very, very low.
A Russian Captain isn't going to start WWIII, just because
somebody is tracking him.
The Northumberland also has 4 torpedotubes of her own,
+ torpedoes on its helicopter, so it's not like they were defenceless.
when the sonar was down they were completely defenseless. plus russian subs are armed with supersonic shkval torpedo. no chance. they didn't even knew where the sub was for 24 hours. while the sub had eye on the ship all the time.
When was this filmed?
fun facts Russia already knew 24 hours early they had been tracking.
Hey, the Ruskis have a bunch of new submarines, no big deal! Thank you Ukraine for your contribution to the Russian submarine fleet in the Black Sea

Fortunately they forgot how to build it. The youth of today have not known a bad life.
Sorry but our government and councils have squandered to much money supporting our nonworking class to keep our fleet running. We've set aside a few hundred thousand pounds to start a kayak and canoe navy to protect our swan ponds though.

True. The whole style of it is pretty terrible.
It's for preventing any information leak of their equipments 😉
Damn, what a story. That russian sub crazy ivan'd and clipped the array. Amazing seamanship. So aggressive. It shows how wide a latitude Russian submariners are given by Moscow. Something like that could lead to a wider conflict.

Yeah you should try spot the Swedish Gotland submarine class. You wouldn't spot it at all with their sophisticated stirling engine air indipendent propulsion.
On American Submarines during the Cold War we called our STS's (Sonar Technician Submarines) Sonar Girls. Not for the same reason used for Sonar Lady because they were all men.
More than it's minutes in, the episode has not yet started. But already one Comercial break.
If this was war that ship would be in the company of the long departed Atlantis..

its an exercise. No Russian sub, those submarine mast are from a British Trafalgar class sub 😂
Respect to the crew and the Captain. But that ship need an overhaul maintenance so the Captain can do his job well.
In all honesty, it wouldn't be the first time a russian submarine ends up on the bottom of an Ocean. If you know what I mean! I don't know how smart it is to show this kind of stuff!

Why did they wait that long to send up the copter? And why is there no way of retrieving sonar buoys?
Note to self - raise radar array when within 100m
After the Kursk was lost another Russian submarine was trapped in a sonar array. It was rescued by a British ROV.
"On 5 August 2005 AS-28, under the command of Lieutenant Vyacheslav Milashevskiy, became entangled with the aerial of a hydrophone array off the coast of the Kamchatka Peninsula, in Berezovaya Bay, 70 kilometres (43 mi) southeast of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatskiy, Kamchatka Oblast."
