Fujifilm X-T3 vs Panasonic GH5 for Video: Quick Look

  • The Fujifilm X-T3’s video specs are so impressive that the camera it most makes sense to compare its output to is Panasonic's GH5. With a little help from the DPReviewTV crew in Calgary, we’ve shot some side-by-side comparisons between these two video powerhouses.
    We’ve shot them both at matched exposure settings and approximately matched depth-of-field setting.
    To really appreciate the codec differences, we recommend downloading the less compressed version, to avoid the differences being swamped by RUclips’s compression.

    The video features and improvements in AF are remarkable but what many of us will be waiting for is the X-H2 with all the goodies of the X-T3, a bigger battery and the flip-out screen of the X-T100.. that's the camera I wanted (and the X-H1 should have been)

    • @m.gwincinski6949

      Have you consider X-T4? Much better option than X-H2. Trust me.

    • @tvurk
      @tvurk 6 лет назад +5

      I know you're half joking but I see no reason to wait for the X-T4, the X-T3 is a great successor to the X-T2. For the X-H1 though many were hoping for the newer sensor and AF improvements that the X-T3 now has. A bigger battery would make a lot more sense for that bigger body too, there is room for it. The X-T3 is just very promising for the X-H2, imagine all these video and AF improvements in a bigger body with IBIS and a flipout screen. That's my dream camera from Fuji.

      They have to implement it at this point.
      4k60p at x265 compression with continuous AF and sensor stabilization will emit heat and drain the battery like there is no tomorrow.

    • @matthagge4792
      @matthagge4792 6 лет назад

      Yeah this camera is getting me excited about an X-H2. 4K60, better AF, better codecs, plus a bunch of quality-of-life improvements address some of my gripes with the X-H1. The X-H2 will be a beast of a camera when it comes out unless Panasonic or Sony pull some crazy stunts.

    • @p_adam19
      @p_adam19 6 лет назад +1

      Everybody is on the roll in a similar fashion.
      I don't think we can see better internal codecs on this stage, I think the sensor and video feature set will be the same as this one. But besides the inevitable sensor stabilisation, a new battery (and architecture that supports it, which will also help with heat management) and maybe a better LCD are important things, the rest can wait or tweaked in the firmware, etc.

    Awesome summary! As a GH5 owner, Fuji is the only other company I've been keeping my eye on this year. Depending on what Panasonic has in store, I maaaaaay wander over to Fuji for better low-light and their controls.

    Wow, they're really close to being the be-all-end-all solution. Once they hit 10-bit 4:2:2 internally with DCI4K at 60p with 400Mbps All-I, get that fully articulating screen and (much) larger capacity battery, that's pretty much it. Though I'd really like to see a dual ISO solution along with an XLR adapter. If they can get some more DR, that's always welcome, of course. I guess nothing is ever enough, but that Eterna is luscious. Competition is great. I just wish Canon would participate.

      120fps is fairly useless except for very intense slow motion. 4:4:4, you should just get a camera that shoots raw video. But yeah, there's always going to be something, but I think we're VERY close for the vast majority of videoshooters. Anything more than 10-bit 4:2:2 4K60p is generally going to be in the realm of a cinema camera.

    both are great tools, and both wont be bad in any way, it really depens on what you need... but there are important things like the ecosystem and the ibis, which are imo crutial factors in favour of the gh5, which arent as obvious when comparing still tripod videos... so for light traveling or if you dont want gimbals, you will have to go with the gh5 in order to get realtivly smooth footage, just a reminder... the video quality itself really is on a high level on both, the fuji has the slight edge there imo...

That first shot with the blown out lamp showing no DR on the Fuji, then every shot after. You spoke about LUTS a fair bit, have you tried the Leeming yet? Especially on Resolve it takes a lot of the grading issues away. Great review, keep it up.

My subjects are rarely people, I film/photograph a lot of architecture, machinery, and transportation. So a lot of moving things that are not faces. How do you (or anyone else in the comments) think the X-T3 would handle let's say a subway train pulling into a station, the front of the strain starting small on the left of the screen and speeding up and growing bigger as it travels to the right of the screen?

    Hey Jordan, quick question. What do you mean by "grading by hand"? Are you just trying to put contrast and saturation from the log image? Generally speaking, any flavor of LOG has to be converted to workable gamma/colorspace such as Rec. 709. Colorist Juan Melara's channel has a couple of guidelines on how this in done inside DaVinci Resolve.

    Hey Jordan and Chris :- HUGE QUESTION> I am happy with my X-PRO2 for stills, am still partial towards my X-T1 for the huge viewfinder, am comfortable working with RAW files but am a total noob to video. The straight out of camera video and continuous autofocus of the Sony rx100v make it my perfect video camera. I don't care about the pocketability.
    Does the X-T3 match the continuous autofocus and video capabilities of the Sony rx100v? If so, I can consolidate my X-pro2, X-T1 and rx100v into one X-T3.

    According to spec page:
    - 4K60 works for "approx 20min" (sounds like overheating limit to me, I absolutely need unlimited 4K60 recording like GH5)
    - 4K60 is cropped 1.18x
    - video files are split at 4GB (unusable for me)
    - 10bit video internally is 4:2:0 only
    - HLG (HDR) not yet available (but they say will come by end of year firmware update, not sure if 4:2:0 follows HLG spec, I thought 4:2:2 had to be the HLG spec)
    - no IBIS is no good for video and photo (means a $1000 gimball is compulsory for shots off tripod, I never shoot on tripod)
    - battery life is way too short means Battery grip is compulsory but goes through 5+ batteries in 1 day of video shooting.
    - LCD is not very bright and does not flip to the side (which rules out a lot of types of video shooting, I don't want to buy a camera without a side flip display)
    - Lack of object tracking in autofocus is a very big bummer (although the much better face tracking AF than GH5 is great!)
    - What does it do in H264 and what does it do in H265? I am hoping it allows to choose either for all frame rates and resolutions and that H265 just means it can do half the bitrate for the same quality. Is that not what it can do? Does it force you to use H265 for IPB? (without even saving a lot on the bitrate?) That's what it sounds like from this video. (since NX1 of 5 years ago I am waiting for a camera to be able to do 4K in H265 properly to save up to half the bandwidth and storage and still be RUclips direct upload compatible at the same 4K quality). I want a camera that does 75mbit/s H265 at the same quality as 150mbit/s in H264. Or 100mbit/s in H265 at the same quality as 200mbit/s in H264. This might require a much "stronger" "advanced" "more complex profile" real-time H265 encoding ability. If RUclips, Netflix and Amazon fit their 4K24 streams within 25mbit/s then surely there is a camera that can fit 4K60 nicely in about 75mbit/s when encoding real-time in camera comparable in quality to what it would do in like the GH5 in 150mbit/s using H264.

      I list a bunch of real drawbacks with video on X-T3. 20min record limit, 4GB file splitting, 1.18x crop, no IBIS, LCD doesn't flip to the side, poor battery life. Fuji has to fix all that in X-H2 for me to consider buying into Fuji, but likely Fuji will not. I just wanted a GH5 with good autofocus, this one seems great for face tracking but lack of object tracking is very bad. I hope A7Siii and A7000 do everything that I want.

      20 months after GH5 was released, I'd expect to not get anything less when it comes to video anyway. While it's super super exciting to see this extremely good face tracking autofocus and 4K60 with 10bit and H265 options, all those things are awesome, there are many steps back compared with GH5 like no unlimited recording, file splitting at 4GB, 1.18x crop, no IBIS, no flip out display, shorter battery life, no object tracking. I can't be buying a camera that is in many ways worse than GH5 released nearly 2 years ago. I want something that is better in every way.

    Definitely planning to buy the X-T3. A recent convert to Fuji X-H1---an awesome video camera. For the first time, after using Sony (gah!!), Panasonic--so-so color, crap AF, except for the GH5s, and Canon, I'm delighted with the beautiful colors of the film simulations. I've never seen such beautiful footage coming out of the camera, with gorgeous, inspiring color, sharp, clean images that require minimal grading and adjustments in post.
    Next, Fuji needs to produce a camera with waveforms and an XLR unit a la the Canon XC15---then there will be some ass kicking.
    Really happy with my decision to go with Fuji----and boy, are the X-T2 and X-H1 easy to use and fun, fun, fun.

    Hi Jordan, thanks for the info. I would like to ask how big is lets say 1 minute video: 10bit,4k@60fps,4.2.0 - SDcard recording in h265 on xt3?I have currently xt2 and would consider xt3 - and would love to know the size of the video with h265 codec versus h264.Many thanks.

    Quick question - was that firmware 2.3 in the GH5 for the AF test and did you use the default settings or improve them (on both)?

    I am a Nikon shooter and was pretty excited for the Z6... I almost bought a XT2 but wanted to see what Fuji had in store... Now I am thinking of totally disregarding the Z6 and going for the XT3. nothing but positive things have been said about it, and fuji glass is amazing. IBIS would have been nice but if your really doing video it would probably be best to use a Ronin S or other gimble... Which can be bought with the money that would have had to go towards buying a Z6... Nikon came out with an awesome Camera but way over priced it for what it is. On a side note... Very interesting to see this was filmed down the street from my house in Prestwick hahaha

Grazie.

    Great review! Do you guys have yet another review of the XT-4 versus the GH5? Or better yet, I can’t help but think Panasonic MUST be ready to finally release an updated GH5- perhaps a GH6?! Or FINALLY produce an APS-C version of the GH5?? A real comparison would be between a new APS-C Panasonic LUMIX versus the XT-4

    Out of sheer curiosity, does the X-T3 still have that same "stepping" effect when it's changing ISO values, like how the X-T2 and X-H1 have?

    I have a GH5 myself and I love it but there are a few things I absolutely hate about it, my last camera was a Pentax K70 and the K70 wipes the floor with the GH5 with regards to image quality of photos. I'm glad to see in many reviews and sample photos that the Fjuifilm X-T30 which i'm interested in buying has better image quality. Another I hate about the GH5 is the noise, even at ISO200 you can see noise if you pixel peep, at ISO1600 the noise is quite bad, it's much lower on the Fjui X-T30. I love the in body stabilization of my GH5 but to be honest as effective as it is it's still not perfect and a gimble is much, much better. Can you tell me in your opinion how much more shaky an X-T30 is using an OIS lens than the GH5 with it's 5 axis?

    Great video. I'm so confused though. I was so certain I would buy the new A7iii, as an upgrade to my A7 and because of the video quality . Now I see this. Should I go to Fuji or panasonic since they have 10 bit 422 internally? Exciting options but it feels more difficult to choose then ever.

    Why are the shadows so dark? I am confused, as Fuji is known for its great colors and film simulations, but with such pitch black shadows (not only it this review but in other clips as well) the picture looks so digital because of this contrast in shadows, and even GH5 footage looks much more natural. Kind of disappointed with that, but hope a proper color correction and grading can fix it. Even this Eterna film simulation looks so digital and contrasty

      I've seen other videos where the shadows are completely crushed. No detail at all. I'm surprised he compared both shots at 2:19 -ish when the shirt and hat had no detail they were so dark with the XT-3 and he still made a noise judgment.

    • @Isaac-Brody
      @Isaac-Brody 5 лет назад

      Completely agree with you. On paper, the sensor size and color profiles should really excel, but I keep looking at all the footage out there and it has a very digital look and feel. The blacks are crushed, and the GH5 indeed looks much more natural. And the dynamic range looks limited with harsh a harsh roll off in the highlights. I have not been wowed by any of the footage available and think it's worth waiting for Panasonic's full-frame response.
