I made sure my ads were impressive, and well-designed. Got the targeting right. Interesting. We already noticed something was changing back in November 2021 when the cost per conversion was more than twice as much as our previous campaigns. We also noticed that the conversions that were reported did not translate to streams quite as much as before. I also did a very small scale test, still with conversion ads but without very detailed targeting and those results were actually better. Apparently Facebook was able to find a better audience that way, compared to using the detailed targeting options (people with similar bands and music taste).
I was just thinking about this. Lately it's been impossible to get my conversions to get below 45 cents. However whenever i try link clicks Almost none of the data carries over as streams. Back to the drawing board i suppose 😅 I'll try narrowing down to higher tier countries

I can definitely do an update on this. Thanks for the suggestion. Short answer, I find both to be effective. I still run traffic ads on occasion, but I lean more heavily on conversions once again. I'll make a vid about it for sure though!
I've been doing this method for a few days and yes the cost is way better, but it seems like its all bot traffic. I am using a hypeddit landing page and can see that its getting tons of visits, but after switching from conversions to traffic, its dropped substantially. from 22% CTR to 12%
I've been going direct to Spotify and bypassing the landing page. I've also been targeting a much more narrow list of top tier countries, which has helped with bot traffic. Might try that.

my genre followers are most from Malaysia, Indonesian countries. should i try this method? i am a bit worried of the bots and most users are on free tiers spotify account thus when they click the link, a bit worried that they will stream another songs first in shuffle. what do you think? at the same time, i am thinking of switching from tonedeon to hypeddit using the conversion API as per recent andrew’s video. what’s yout take on this? I am releasing new song soon in 2 weeks
So do you skip the landing page altogether? Is it allowed to link directly to a song on Spotify.? So can I make a video and then ask people to click to listen to the song on Spotify and link directly. I think I had problems with trying this in the past.
Yeah, I go directly to Spotify with traffic campaigns. No landing page. For conversions, I still use a landing page. So just depends on which you decide to use!
I spoke to a FB rep, they suggest to also try changing the optimization to landing page views in the traffic campaign. Of course you would need to use a landing page and not a direct link to Spotify.
Tom I have run many traffic campaigns over the past 2 weeks for an artist and now have been running conversion ads for almost a week. I am using a smartlink for the ad so I can track conversions or see which platforms are being clicked more etc. Because the data is so trashed on Facebook end I have created events on google analytics alongside UTM Parameters to see exactly what is going on. I notice a good 20% of conversions are being lost on facebook end which i can clearly see in my Google Analytics. using this data I am able to determine the real Cost Per Conv. and it is significantly lower than the traffic ads. I can also see that all of the link clicks to my smart link from traffic ads got literally 0 clicks (conversions) at all. They were literally all just page views and that's it. I concluded Facebook just did an amazing job at optimizing to people that will get low click costs and thats it which is what the traffic campaigns focus on. The algorithm doesnt care to show to people that will get conversions cause its not in the objective. So in conclusion I am still running conversion ads it is just annoying to have to use an extra step to determine my actual cost per conv. I must say that this is just data from sending people to a smartlink and not directly to Spotify. The data may be completely different if i sent the traffic directly to Spotify.
Thank you for sharing this. Those results aren't too surprising since both campaigns were routing to a landing page. I think, by default, conversions are going to be the winner when a landing page is included. A split test with conversion + landing vs traffic + direct link might be a better comparison. Either way, I'm happy to know about these results. This is probably far more steps than the average user is able to take, so we'll need to keep testing to find an optimal way for the non-technical artist to use these tool effectively.
What if you connect your toneden account to google analytics? That way you could measure the conversions from GA (if you set the tag) and also know exactly what your conversion rate is (how many people ckick the button to go to Spotify)
I guess you could. I hadn't thought of that. But that would be a ton of extra steps for something that achieves essentially same results as a well-executed traffic campaign in my opinion.
Very interesting! Apart from the tracking pixel, which doesn't work for most anyway (many use an adblocker) and with the current iOS this tracking is also a problem because many don't agree to tracking.... Would it make a difference to take the Sportify link directly instead of the landing page with the Spotify link? Do people click more when they see an additional landing page?
Yes, I almost suspected that. From a technical point of view, it doesn't really matter whether it's traffic or conversion anyway? If I have understood correctly, it is only the analysis, e.g. with the Facebook Pixel, that makes the difference? If the landing page does not support the pixel anyway, it makes no difference?
Hi Tom, you write that a spotify link works fine for traffic campaigns. But doesnt have a landing page the advantage to direct fans not only to spotify but also to other straming services?
Yes, using a landing page is great if you want to give other options. However, I really wouldn't recommend using a landing page with a traffic campaign. If you want to offer multiple options like that, I'd suggest a conversion campaign.
I've started using fb ads with traffic ads and a small budget, but unfortunately I deduced using Spotify for Artists that absolutely all the clicks were mistakes. Most of the 17 clicks I got in fb were from older people (25 to 65 years old), but on Spotify for artists I only have a handful of people in this range which I know are my friends. I started setting up toneden with my own domain, I will try conversion ads next week. And I will remove older people from my audience because even though they might like my music, they seem to misclick a lot
You can if you use a link redirect with your pixel embedded in that. There isn't a native way to do it through Facebook, but you can use something like ToneDen's link shortener tool and stick your pixel inside of that and use that data for retargeting and lookalike creation.
Extremely grateful for this video man, was just about to start a conversions campaign too. You're the man for this. I'm thinking about doing a landing page ad, with general interests + narrowing audience to all streaming services instead of 1 (Spotify) (Dont want to limit my already limited audience). 1 adset for T1 + T2 (2/3 ads) and another adset for T3+WW minus bot countries. I know you advise against landing page but would you think this is a good idea? I'll be able to test if the second adset is converting by counting how many streams I'm getting and dividing by the number of clicks Thank you so much man, you didn't have to do this. This video is a gift after being scared this whole week watching peoples conversions crumble on reddit. You have no idea how much this helps
are your traffic ads still running as well as when you dropped this video? (are you still narrowing down the targets geographically and getting good results in the US?)
I'm currently using conversion ads for myself, but I'm running traffic ads for several clients and they are working beautifully. Almost every ad I'm running is targeting some combination of "tier 1" countries, including the US, and getting good results.
Tom, you read my mind, I literally was thinking today about switching to traffic ads!! Would you still recommend linking to a landing page, or could I link straight to my track on Spotify?
@@tomdupreeiii Related question: I created an ad linking straight to Spotify, but when I came across it and others like it on Instagram stories the link was broken (linked to Spotify but not to the song or artist). Do you have any experience with this? Is there a special version of Spotify links I should use?
I'm completely confused by which link to use in spotify landing page. I'm told using an album URL ( as oposed to the Spotify track URL ) works better for embedding and ads, as this is a clickable link that people can also play your track from. Does that make sense ? Thanks.
I always use either the track link or the link to my artist profile. I never use the album link. The track link will autoplay the song and the profile link will drop them on your profile where they can follow. The only other option I'll use sometimes is a playlist link if I want to send them there. Hope that helps!
@@tomdupreeiii Thanks so much Tom. Some details matter. Getting Spotifiy to tell me these things is like trying to get blood from a stone. You are a Godsend.
Ill just further add - Spotifiy just now informed me There would be no issues if the listener is on Premium, but free users might have trouble listening to the track on demand on mobile In which case it is a question of autoplayability vs reaching all spotify tiers on mobile. About 25% if half are on phones, & half of Spotfy users are on Premium.
Hi there! Great videos! Question, if you're no longer doing conversion campaigns, doesn't that mean that you don't have to redirect them to a landing page anymore? Wouldn't it be more efficient to send them directly to your spotify song link? Thank you.
OK I just launched a traffic Ad. Maybe I'm missing something but It seems much more straight forward - no pixel, no business account required, no IOS14 hassles with domains etc. Fingers crossed that this works. I didn't see a way to upload multiple videos to test different part of the song - anyone know how to do that?
@@tomdupreeiii I launched from my business account. I halted the Ad after 109 clicks and zero spotify plays in 3 days. I'm not blaming this on the Ad type, I think something went wrong elsewhere, perhaps the link. I have yet to launch a successful Ad in 3 attempts. I need help. Where's the info to that live chat that you do?
Great video and explanation. Would be great if you could make a video walkthrough for setting up a traffic campaign in 2022. Do you use a toneden landing page for this? Do i need an own domain for this like with conversions? And what is the role of the pixel in this? Greetings from Hannover, Germany
Hello, do you send people to a toneden landing page or directly to spotify? Since you might lost people if they go on a landing page, it might be more effective to send them directly to spotify but you might have more "shitty trafic" this way
@@tomdupreeiii nice!! but don't you fear to drive more shitty trafic since the landing page doesn't play its role of gate keeper from bots? Is there really a lot of bots on instagram ? I advertise in France (pretty developed country) and stories placement only
Hi Tom, as an artist from India, its important for me to run ads for India and the surrounding Asian countries as well. But non conversion campaigns really don't do well here due to bot traffic. What do you suggest?
In that instance, I would stick with conversion ads, or I would test being incredibly specific with your targeting to avoid those issues as best as you can. Very narrow targeting may work better with traffic ads for you.
@@tomdupreeiii My latest campaign is horrible even in tier-1 countries it's overrun with bots. I've spoken 4 -5 times with FB rep by phone together we created new campaigns and Ad sets but nothing is working. This FB Rep admitted that they were having a serious bot issue.
Thanks Tom, i've recently done the same. I think i'm going to try Conversion campaigns with Hyppeddit, (they have same really good analytics with breakdown by country, device ect and you can use the Conversion API access token, which i couldn't in Toneden, my understanding (From the video Andrew Southworth did) this will give you about the same amount of info as previous pixel data?? Anyways might try next release with cold audience using this, then move for retargeting traffic audience for weeks 2-4 ect of a new release.
I don't know the Hypepeddit details, but the idea behind conversion campaigns is not the reporting. It's the optimization by Facebook. Facebook needs the pixel to know which users convert (click the landing page button) and which ones click on the ad, but then do not convert. With this information, Facebook can show the ads the those users who are more likely to convert. Hence, you get more conversions -> more Spotify listeners. The good thing is that in richer countries, there is almost no difference in Spotify campaigns. People who click will also most likely listen. So there is no need for Facebook to filter out any people who may only click because they don't exist.
I think they've always been a viable option. Conversions have simply been safer and easier to find quality listeners in more countries. Traffic ads take more discernment in terms of targeting, but once you narrow that down, they're every bit as effective in my experience. Both conversions and traffic are great to have in your tool belt depending on how the other works at any given time.
I’ve tested traffic campaign in Mexico and it did NOT result into listeners on Spotify, even though Mexico is one of my top performing countries on Spotify and has always done really well with conversion ads
hypeddit and Andrew have done testing between the two end result; very similar, however, conversion ads still are just a little bit better per $ to gain a good fan in the long run
I'm a fan of both campaign types for different reasons at this point. Traffic campaigns are great for easy setup, plus they work great in more expensive countries. I like conversions for a more global approach and more security from bot traffic.
Hi Tom, But traffic ads won’t teach the algo which kind of people will convert, so it’s “blind” traffic. Given that, why do you suppose it’s performing better for you?
You're right, it doesn't educate Facebook on who "converts" but it does educate the AI on who is clicking through. As long as those clicks are translating through to Spotify, the AI is in a positive feedback loop, so I let it continue. I think there are a combination of factors that are leading to positive results for me (e.g. seasoned ad account, well-defined audience, time and money spent advertising, etc.)
Dear Tom, for how long do you approx "test" which of your ADs is performing best under a particular adset ? For example, a verse, chorus and a bridge? Cheers
hey tom. when you're doing the traffic campaign how do you read the data? whats the difference between cost per result, cost per link click, and cost per landing page view? Which one should i be looking at to compare to conversion campaigns?
For me, the most important things are link clicks, cost per click, link click-through rate, and location. I kind of compare all of those against my Spotify follower growth and streams to see how successful my campaign is.
Appreciate the insights, Tom. I'm just starting a new campaign for release tomorrow and I couldn't convince myself to trust in conversions at this point. Do you have any thoughts on optimizing the traffic campaign for link clicks vs landing page views?
@@briandowd135 My question was related to the "Optimization for ad delivery" options that you can find under the settings for the ad set you're working with. There's 2 options there: optimized for link clicks or landing page views.
@@zacharyaustin for “landing page views” to work correctly, the destination page needs the pixel and the user tracking features to work - this is the same stuff that the conversion campaigns need, which obviously broke with iOS updates. So yes, you have to optimize for link clicks. Attempting to optimize for landing page views will probably net you similar results to conversion campaigns.
Hey Tom, what is the optimum time for an ad creative video? I made my mine 15s , which I think is too short for people listen then decide to take action. What do you think?
I have not bothered with conversion campaigns since IOS 14. I can't even get an ad out of the learning phase, so it is a complete waste of my money. At this point, you just need to roll with traffic and keep your cost low.
Hello Tom, thank you for your video. I would like to ask you, if I read correctly I've read that since you're using traffic objective, you're sending the promo directly to spotify (without landings) perfect, in this case, how can you measure the conversions? Other question, have you using the subobjective cost per clic or landing page visit? Thank you again
Been running traffic ads the last few days for my recent release and have only been targeting high tier countries like US France Germany and Canada and have been getting great cost per click, but nothing is translating at all in terms of streams follows etc. any thoughts on what the issue could be? Some of these ads were as low as 6 cents a click which seems completely unlikely, best I’ve managed with the same ad sets were 18 cents. Could this be botted clicks?
What are your placements? If it's stories only, that shouldn't happen. But CPC might also be higher in stories. If you have other placements, you might get cheaper clicks but many of them might not actually listen to your song.
@@DBecks09 yeah I’ve essentially switched from my normal manual placements almost to exclusively Instagram feed and stories. I’ve had success quite recently with the same ad set up and the budget was just getting eaten up in the wrong places
Yeah for me it’s also really unpredictable. US seems to convert into actual listeners OK-ish. Not at all as good compared to what conversion campaigns did for me. But other countries didn’t really turn into listeners on Spotify so far :(

I have a question, makin right now my traffic campaign I see that on the deliver ads they have a few options - landing page, -link clicks - impressions - Nd daily unique reach …. Which one will you recommend me Tom ? Or anybody in the chat ?
I stand by both. I'm currently using both ad types for myself and traffic and/or conversions for my clients, depending on their goals and ad performance. They are two sides of the same coin and, for growth on Spotify, can achieve the same results.
I don't like traffic ads as it has a higher chance of getting bots traffic plus more importantly not being able to build an audience by buying data. The ability to build retargeting and lookalike audience will always have more weight in the long run in my opinion. So the cost per conversion doesn't only include the cost of a new follower or stream but also the ability to target that very person mutiple times over.
I agree there is a higher chance of bad traffic with traffic ads, but that mostly has to do with location targeting. If you're targeting the right countries, it becomes far less of an issue. You can also use a link redirect with traffic ads to gather that click-through data, just as you would with conversions. If you're targeting higher tier countries, that data is going to be high-quality and highly effective. Conversions certainly are more data-beneficial, but that is only the case if the data is accurate, which it hasn't been for the past several months for a lot of people. Facebook has been estimating a big portion of it.

Thanks! Please make a video teaching us how to set link click campaigns.
Will do soon!
Thanks for the video. Are traffic ads the same on the new add accounts that have the different selections?
To my knowledge, yes they are.
A landing page is only necessary with a conversion campaign. If you're using a traffic campaign, a direct link to Spotify is perfect.
Yes, I almost suspected that. From a technical point of view, it doesn't really matter whether it's traffic or conversion anyway? If I have understood correctly, it is only the analysis, e.g. with the Facebook Pixel, that makes the difference? If the landing page does not support the pixel anyway, it makes no difference?
do you have any video on setting up traffic ads?
Not yet, but I'll be covering that soon!
Those 25 year olds aren't the most handy with the mouse. This seems like a good plan.
Hello Tom,thank you for the news. Will the Accelerator have this info as well?
Yes it will. In the process of updating and reimagining the course now!

I'll be able to test if the second adset is converting by counting how many streams I'm getting and dividing by the number of clicks
Thank you so much man, you didn't have to do this.
Thank you!!!🙏🏽🎶
No problem!
Interesting, thanks. I'll try that!
Tom, you read my mind, I literally was thinking today about switching to traffic ads!! Would you still recommend linking to a landing page, or could I link straight to my track on Spotify?
I've been going straight to Spotify. No landing page.
@@tomdupreeiii thank you!
Ill just further add - Spotifiy just now informed me
There would be no issues if the listener is on Premium, but free users might have trouble listening to the track on demand on mobile
In which case it is a question of autoplayability vs reaching all spotify tiers on mobile.
Thank you.
That's correct! You only need a landing page with conversion campaigns. Go directly to the destination with a traffic campaign.
@@tomdupreeiii thank you for replying. I've been waiting for it! Do you know what a good ratio is in terms of streams per /clicks (fb/ig ads)
I swear I saw this exact comment on another video
It is definitely much more straightforward, though I would still recommend using a business account over your personal account.
Thanks for watching! Replied to this same series of questions on the live stream video. Cheers.
@@tomdupreeiii Thanks! Always a pleasure to watch your videos:-)
Hello, do you send people to a toneden landing page or directly to spotify?
Since you might lost people if they go on a landing page, it might be more effective to send them directly to spotify but you might have more "shitty trafic" this way
With these new traffic ads, I'm sending people directly to Spotify. No need for the landing page with this type of ad.
@@tomdupreeiii nice!! but don't you fear to drive more shitty trafic since the landing page doesn't play its role of gate keeper from bots?
Is there really a lot of bots on instagram ? I advertise in France (pretty developed country) and stories placement only
@@azure4302 if you target the top tier countries like Canada / US etc the risk of bad traffic like click farm and bot stuff isn’t as high
@@tomdupreeiii thank you.. Ill try this
Hi Tom thanks for the insight. Are you still exclusively running traffic ads in 2023- 2024?
Hey no problem. No, I run a combination of the two, depending on goals, etc. Both currently work well in my experience.
Will you update us in case anything changes in the near future? I would guess conversion ads should still be useful when they get fixed eventually
Yeah, I'll definitely keep updates going on the channel.
Apart of me is relieved by this, almost like traffic and link click campaigns are making a bit of a comeback almost
@@tomdupreeiii with traffic campaigns though, are you still sending them to a tonrden landing page? Or directly to your Spotify profile?
Can you still build custom audiences from traffic ads and retarget people? Or build LAL’s?
Yeah, for sure. You can build audiences from video views or use a link redirect tool to embed your pixel and retarget users who clicked your ad.
Thank you Tom for keeping us updated! Do you think traffic ads would work aswell on south american countries?
I’ve tested traffic campaign in Mexico and it did NOT result into listeners on Spotify, even though Mexico is one of my top performing countries on Spotify and has always done really well with conversion ads
hypeddit and Andrew have done testing between the two
end result; very similar, however, conversion ads still are just a little bit better per $ to gain a good fan in the long run
Thanks for the input!
I was wondering your thoughts 6 months on as I saw Facebook changed some things.
I'm a fan of both campaign types for different reasons at this point. Traffic campaigns are great for easy setup, plus they work great in more expensive countries. I like conversions for a more global approach and more security from bot traffic.
Hi Tom,
But traffic ads won’t teach the algo which kind of people will convert, so it’s “blind” traffic.
So does this mean that for campaigns leading traffic to Spotify, the landing page have become obsolete?
Hi Tom, so now with traffic campaigns, you're sending users directly to spotify, not to a landing page? Thank you
Yep, that's right.
@@tomdupreeiii Cool, thank you so much!
Dear Tom, for how long do you approx "test" which of your ADs is performing best under a particular adset ? For example, a verse, chorus and a bridge? Cheers
I generally will try to wait a full week to let things iron themselves out before I start turning stuff off.
hey tom. when you're doing the traffic campaign how do you read the data? whats the difference between cost per result, cost per link click, and cost per landing page view? Which one should i be looking at to compare to conversion campaigns?
For me, the most important things are link clicks, cost per click, link click-through rate, and location. I kind of compare all of those against my Spotify follower growth and streams to see how successful my campaign is.
Appreciate the insights, Tom. I'm just starting a new campaign for release tomorrow and I couldn't convince myself to trust in conversions at this point.
Do you have any thoughts on optimizing the traffic campaign for link clicks vs landing page views?
Yeah, I would optimize for link clicks. That's what I've been doing. Hope the new campaign goes well!
Is this button your referring to titled get more button clicks on FB ads? Working on this myself
@@tomdupreeiii Thanks! Will update with the results!
I like a 15 second video. That's what I've always used with great results.
Do you use a smart link or a direct link to your Spotify album?
I use a direct link to Spotify (or a link redirect) with traffic ads. With conversion ads I use a Toneden smart link (landing page).
Nice post brother. Can you make a traffic Ad video please? Am I supposed to make a traffic Ad with landing page or link clicks?
I'll be making more videos on this sort of setup soon. I'm using link clicks.
I have not bothered with conversion campaigns since IOS 14. I can't even get an ad out of the learning phase, so it is a complete waste of my money. At this point, you just need to roll with traffic and keep your cost low.
Man, that's what's up. I now use a hybrid of the two depending on performance, whereas I only used conversions beforehand.
But other countries didn’t really turn into listeners on Spotify so far :(

whay does my facebook ad center NOT have all those options?
I haven't had any success from traffic ads, as they translated to 2 streams from 300 clicks, so I can't even justify the cost of traffic ads

Hi I just subscribed to your channel ….Thks for the video broo, I accually changed a few months ago to google ads, cause I saw the same problem of conversion not workin good as before, but now that u mention, web traffic I will try it now again my promo on face ….. I have a question, makin right now my traffic campaign I see that on the deliver ads they have a few options
- landing page, -link clicks - impressions - Nd daily unique reach …. Which one will you recommend me Tom ? Or anybody in the chat ?
Do you still stand by running traffic ads over conversion campaigns?
I stand by both. I'm currently using both ad types for myself and traffic and/or conversions for my clients, depending on their goals and ad performance. They are two sides of the same coin and, for growth on Spotify, can achieve the same results.
I don't like traffic ads as it has a higher chance of getting bots traffic plus more importantly not being able to build an audience by buying data. The ability to build retargeting and lookalike audience will always have more weight in the long run in my opinion. So the cost per conversion doesn't only include the cost of a new follower or stream but also the ability to target that very person mutiple times over.
You made a good statement, at the end of the day the goal is to get super fan not casual fan
But traffic ads could be good if you have enough datas, and accurate lookalike audience
Facebook has been estimating a big portion of it.
thanks for the video dude, I wonder why don't you just use conversions for android users
I don't want to completely alienate Apple users. I'd much rather find an effective method for all.
