Man, what you said works... IT REALLY DAMN WORKS! in 12 hours with new ads done as you said I got the same conversions of 10 days of my previous ads. It's incredible, I though that catchy videos could help and got thousands and thousands of link clicks, but almost no one went to Spotify (conversion rate at less than 0,3%). Now it is at 55%! THANKS! ❤️
Yes yes yes!! Dude, yes! This is what I'm talking about. I'm so glad you got good results with this method. It's so counterintuitive, isn't it? Congrats on the improvement in your ads!
A landing page allows you to run true conversion ads, which has a few different benefits: qualifying traffic, reduced bot clicks, and better data to use for adjustment and retargeting over time.
Tom, thank you so much for this video. It's incredibly helpful, seriously! I'm a complete Final Cut beginner so I was really glad that you explained everything step by step. On Friday, I will use this template for my new single release and I'm pretty curious how the ads will perform. :)
You do great content. Thx a bunch! It is encouraging to see that an extra burden of pro video is not necessary at this stage at least. I assume that your length choice of 15s has worked out as most optimal? My gut says, more parts, more interest aroused (like 30-40s of song) but I guess the trade-off is possible loss of follow-through because of short-attention span, even if the song is really good?
This is very helpful. How do you directly send them to a specific song via Toneden? I too use Toneden but it seems like my ad just takes them to my general Spotify page, not the specific song that I'm trying to promote with my story.
Great video, really like the idea of having your ad being congruent with your landing page, I can see how they would improve the CTR of the landing page. Do you only run Story Ads? Have you ever tried 4:5 ratio videos for newsfeed? I've had decent results from that as well
Yeah dude, that consistent customer experience at every checkpoint is really beneficial. I've played with feed placements in the past, but I've had such good results with stories placements recently that I haven't needed to step outside of that. At least not for promoting music on Spotify!
Why do we need a toneden landing page if you only offer a Spotify button? Wouldn't it make more sense to directly send the listener to Spotify without the landing page?
Having the landing page allows you to run a true conversion campaign which will provide retargeting opportunities, qualify better traffic, and decrease the likelihood of running into bot traffic.
Hey Tom, would you be willing to share what program you use for Cover art? I am currently useusing canva but I'm looking for a more flexible creator tool.
Hey Tom great tips thanks a lot! What do you mean exactly with split testing? Setting up multiple Ads in the same Ad Set so that FB can direct the money to the Ad that converts best? Or do you mean using the A/B test campaign feature? Cheers!
Hey great question! I use multiple ads within the same ad set and let Facebook drive traffic to the one that converts the best. I never use the "official" A/B test feature that they have. They always suggest way too much money and way too much time to give me results of any value. By simply using multiple ads within a single ad set, I'm able to make a determination within a couple of days rather than a couple of weeks.
@@tomdupreeiii Alright that's how I have been doing it so far, thanks! And would you say having too many ad sets and ad variations could have a negative influence in the conversions?
@@oshanemusic yeah you can definitely overdo it. I like no more than three ad sets per campaign and no more than 6 ads per ad set. Ideally around 3 ads per ad set is perfect.
Hey Tom! I see you do story ads mainly, but what about FB/IG feed and explore ads? Have you seen if including those options affect the cost of the CPC?
I used to use feed placements, but I've always found better conversion metrics from using only stories placements. It's the only placement worth pursuing for this particular method of advertising in my opinion.
Great video man I’m really gonna use the strategies when I make ads in Final Cut Pro also I love using the Ken Burns effect as well I use it in all of my videos lol
Great info here. I made a flashy 15s music vid and ran it against a single shot of lip syncing vocals in my kitchen. The flashy vid took forever to make and converted at $.17, and the simple one got me down to $.09 and took a few min to make.
Man, I've had that exact same experience. I spent so much time creating music video clips for several of my songs just to have the simple cover art ad perform so much better. I'm glad I figured it out, and having the template now makes things breeze.
Could you make a video about facebook ads and the changes of conversion event because of iOS 14? More to show if u got any problem because of it, and how did u resolve it.
I've been face to face with all the conversion event changes because of iOS14 today. I've learnt that you can only use conversion events that are within your domain, as you need to prove ownership of that domain by verifying it. so, to do that, yeed to have a business manager, add your domain to it, verify your domain, and then set up your events in the aggregate tool Facebook have now introduced. Using things like pixelme to forward a URL from your own domain to an external URL (Like Spotify) would be good to use, and then set up these URLs as custom conversions with the parameter 'URL contains'. that's all I've learnt so far though.. I may be missing some bits. This change is very confusing!
great QandA, great vid. I actually used pexels with a vid and also pics from the same session for the landing page and it worked very well at 15cents a view. Ill check this one out! See you on Friday!
I've been targeting all Spotify territories except India and Philippines with the Lions ads. The most conversions have come from Brazil, Mexico, and Russia.
@@tomdupreeiii Ok, that's what I've found when I target all the territories too. But I also did some research and saw that these countries don't pay nearly as well as Europe/US/Australia. Do you know much about the payout per country? Have you tested any comparisons between Europe/US and the rest of the world to see what actually pays more (as oppose to just getting more conversions for less)? In other words, is it worth more money, or is it better getting only half as many listeners if they're from Europe/US compared to Latin America?
@@conorjbrown this is a good question. Yes, the higher-income countries do pay more per stream, so you are getting a larger percentage return on your ad investment (potentially, assuming you get the same amount of traffic from either area) but I've found that algorithmic traffic doesn't always correspond one for one with where your ads are targeting. I plan to keep testing both and learning more about the differences and advantages, and I'll probably make a video on it at a later date.
Hey Tom, this very clear, thanks! From my Spotify for Artists I've seen your streams have skyrocketted this Friday! Is it because your Ad has triggered the Release Radar ? Can you do a video where you look at the data and analyze why it went so well, and what learnings you get from it ? :) cheers bro!
Yep, that's exactly what happened! I'm planning to do a video on the whole campaign once it's been active for a few more weeks. I want to analyze the whole thing and report on it.
Hey man, great video! I've been thinking start to use these ads but i'm pretty new in social media things. I don't get the need of a landing page... Why not a link straight to the song on spotify? An other stupid question: Do you need to have a certain amount of followers to use this swipe up function? Thank you for your help
Hey thanks for watching! There are no stupid questions here. A landing page helps to qualify your leads so that only people who are actually interested in listening will click through (that's who you really want anyway). Secondly, it allows you to create a conversion campaign instead of a straight up link click campaign. And you can use the swipe up feature in ads regardless of your followers, but you'll need at least 10,000 followers on Instagram to use it organically.
Tom can you make a video about things we should'nt have on our campaign so facebook does'nt disable ur acc, I'm sure I'm not the only one that can't run ads because facebook keeps desabling my acc
My song came out over a month ago, do you think I can still crack the Spotify algorithm if I spend $100 per day for 2 days or should I just spend that money on a next release?
Will this Swipe Up feature work for artists with a small number of followers? I thought I’d read that you need 10k to get the “swipe up” feature on stories, no?
Also, does ToneDen work for pre-release links? I already have a landing page through DistroKid so I’m wondering the benefit of ToneDen above either that or a Linktree page, etc. Is it just the branding/artwork consistency that you’re shooting for?
ToneDen does have a prerelease option but you have to pay for it. I like ToneDen because it’s super versatile and packed with free features. It also loads super fast (important with a landing page) and you can connect a custom domain for free.
What's your usual cost per conversion for the US? I've tried so many different variations of ads for my song (all on Instagram Stories) targeted to the US and my cost per conversion is sooooo bad - like usually over a dollar!!
Mine started high as well and kind of hopped all over the board too. For that reason I didn't experiment with targeting in the US consistently until within the last month or so. Since keeping things running full-time, my cost per conversion has been pretty good. It started in the ~$0.25 range and has come down to the high teens. And I foresee it coming down even further over time.

The conversion happens when someone clicks the button to listen on the landing page.
