While I totally agree that the music you release should be high quality, I know a few examples where recording/performance quality is objectively not great (speaking as a producer and sound engineer), but the artists had a big marketing budget and promote their stuff consistently and they are doing pretty well
Of course, there are always obvious exceptions. A big marketing budget can overcompensate for shortcomings in the music, but a better product always has a better shot at success in my experience.
Solid advice, I think you are 100% correct. One of my best tracks just took off on Spotify. Have around 400 000 streams now and it's mostly from Spotify algorithmic playlists like discover weekly, r radio, etc. But I HAD to promote it, for people to notice it. I think I used 6-700 USD in total in the tracks lifetime and it has earned back 8-900 ish during its life (or more, don't remember right now). But that doesn't mean all my tracks do as good as this. Actually it's opposite, but it showed me, that it CAN work. If you have music that resonates with people. By the way, did you get to visit Norway on vacation? :) Take care!
