The Dukes of Westminster. Who are they and how did they get their money?

My daughter three years younger than the present day Duke went to the same junior school on the estate in Eccleston even then it was reported he was a down-to-earth approachable individual just like his father.
I met his father for dinner in1983. He was very young and I was joking with him on how it must feel to inherit such riches at an early age. He explained it was unexpected his uncle inherited and died early then his father. He interited in his mid twenties. A fortune is a blessing and a curse. In later life he seemed depressed anything he did would be put down to what was given to him rather than what he achieved. He died early the responsibility crushed him like a bug. In turn his son has inherited in his early twenties i for one certainly do not envy him.
How really interesting. Yes, have always thought that it would be more difficult than most take it for.
Normal people experience responsibility and can get crushed. Psychopaths (moral idiots, no conscience) don't.....so they crush others.
I remember seeing a documentary many years ago about his father inheriting the title. He had lived a very private life up to then. Money isn’t everything 😞
I bumped into Hugh's dad a few times professionally. I was living in Chester, Eaton Hall was a few miles outside. The BBC had a small radio studio in County Hall and the Duke of Westminter came in a few times to do "down the line" radio interviews. I was the producer based there.Tried the "Your Grace " thing with him...wasn't having any of it..."Call me Gerald". Curiously whenever I saw him in the studio (You could smoke in them then) or around town (He always said "hello"), he always had a cigarette in one hand and a can of Diet Coke in the other. He went too soon. Gave the impression of being a very nice guy.
You'd have to be a real lackey to call him ''Grace'. Stupendously sad, but it's good to hear he told you not to address him as such. Well, any man of self-respect would refuse to be called 'Your Grace' . You'd have to be a bellend of the highest order.

Queen Elizabeth in 1874? I know that she is rather elderly, but that would be impossible. You mean Queen Victoria.
Both the Grosvenors and The Queen's Crown Estate became very wealthy for the same reason: centuries ago they acquired land outside of the City of London that at the time wasn't worth that much, and then as London expanded far outside of the City this land became extremely valuable, with deep-pockets willing to pay for the privilege of renting there.

Decades back it was reported that the then Duke, father of the present lad, had demolished the grand old family seat, and built a not very grand sixties number where he and wife lived a fairly normal family existence...the new Duke would no doubt recall. It was sad to read of the passing of the late Duke at quite an early age...welcome to the new young fellow taking on the onerous role.
Most of the London residential property, is not able to be altered upwards, so on the 999 year leases, the houses are added to, "below stairs", by upto 7 floors, is the last "renovation", though by now it's likely out of date.
I do not envy the Duke, nor the terms & conditions, of the original Dukes Last Will & Testement, with all those trusts, to feed.
Baraxor, I was told it was all common land before 1066 and William the Conqueror sliced it all for his friends and family. The French made the English foreigners in their own Country but ofcourse the Roman's and Vikings did that first.

His family could have sent him to Eton, Harrow, Marlborough or any other of the grand public schools, followed by Oxford or Cambridge. The fact that they didn’t, choosing instead a lesser known public school and then Newcastle University speaks highly for how grounded they kept themselves, considering their vast wealth and privileged social standing. The present duke’s father seemed a fascinating character…. An unexpected title holder (as a result of his uncle dying childless) and a reluctant aristocrat and property tycoon.

I am impressed with the history behind this family of Duke’s. I believe his mother protected him for as long as she could but eventually he had to face the running of the family business. As the figure head I hope he finds his true happiness and has a wonderful family and life. I hope the current Duke can look after his health and enjoy life.
I don't think he needs your blessings...these people have cunningly hoarded money through the ages, mostly by taxing their tennants heavily on their surplus. To have a successfull life when you have all the connections and money is not impressive. To be born in poverty and still endure a hard life of labour is worth your blessings. Their titles are totally phoney and mean absolutely nothing.

I recall reading years ago now, that The Famly was at point of Bankruptcy, and overturned this through Property managements. ? I thought this was amazing. I feel sorry for this young man father, who didnt want the Title and all that went with it, and then having a nervouse breakdown as well later. Sad for him as money didnt give him what he wanted. The Grosvenors build Liverpool One, fixing about half the city centre from post-war decline. I think this is perhaps why they don't get as much grief as other rich families. They aren't sitting on it, its getting invested here.

It was Queen Victoria granted the dukedom in 1874, not queen Elizabeth.
And how could it be possible for the 3rd Duke of Westminster, build up the business after battle of Waterloo in 1815, whilst they were only granted the dukedom in 1874?

I wish that the Grosevnor Estates could come up with an idea to really help young people in Britain get onto the property market. The 'empty next syndrome' has gone as the chicks (big now) cant leave the nest - as to rent (limited) need a large deposit and purchasing a property a nigh impossibility as again a large deposit is needed. Some sort of innovative module is needed. We are a shrinking island with towns which hitherto had countryside separating them are now almost on top of each other. The Grosevnor Estate would have an enduring legacy if somehow this venture to help young British people to acquire their first home. After all, the great wealth they have accumulated (working extremely hard of course) could help young people who are so wishful to have their own homes. Pipe dreams - perhaps!!??

As pointed out by others, the Grosvenors became non-Royal Dukes by order of Queen Victoria. And, the present duke is a descendant of the Holstein-Gottorp-Romanovs (agnatically, a cadet branch of the House of Oldenburg ) thru his mother. The young Duke seems to be comfortable with his wealth, unlike his father, and seems to have inherited the Grosvenor business acumen.
He’s also descended from Alexander Pushkin and Ivan Gannibal through his mother - Warrior and Poet genes!!!
To be honest whoever enters into a relationship with Hugh will be a very lucky girl. He seems like a very nice guy and is very cute!!

You can bet that Hugh's advisers would ensure a pre marriage contract would be in place before they ever set foot in a church to marry, as if they divorce, that woman would be getting a hell of amount of money, property and assets.
I think the film misses one very important fact. He did not inherit when his father died. The value is owned by an off shore trust, therefore paying no inheritance tax. The wealthy will always look after the wealthy.
I’ve no objection to the Grosvenor family not paying inheritance tax. They are the custodians of some of the finest areas of central London, without their rules greedy opportunist developers would have long ago trashed this priceless heritage so admired by people throughout the World.
@@paullewis2413 The vast majority of their estate is grade-listed, so you are totally misinformed to suggest that it would be 'trashed'. If they had to pay inheritance tax it would just get sold to either private owners or large landlords who would not be able to alter it to any great degree.

Sister of a friend owns a 4 storey townhouse in Kensington. Deciding to sell they applied for a new lease ( despite being a house it is leasehold).
The asking price was £1,000,000 ! For the new lease that is.

I was born in bickley moss. Its on the cholmondeley estate in cheshire. As a child the family treated all their tenants to summer parties. I once played in the family swimming pool. In the main hallway... It was worldly to a young girl, i was around 5/6 yrs old. They put on a party for charles and Diane wedding. Large tables were laid on the garden. We sang carols at the castle too. Mince pies and pop. I sang in the church choir, we sang at 6th marquess hugh cholmondeley daughter's wedding in their chaple. And we invited to a party, all the tenants attended. First time i had champagne, not the expensive stuff. David cholmondeley was born 3 years before me. He was the father of hugh who is now duke of Westminster. I once saw king Charles at a fox hunt in the early 70s.
An excellent history into the background of one of the UK's best known landowners and property developers. Interesting that although Cheshire based that the majority of the companies investments in property seems to be in the already wealthy South East. Perhaps to secure a true philanthropic legacy this multi billion pound company should direct its attention to those most in need and with others, enter the 21st century as the leading developer of social housing replacing the now defunct ideology of state owned housing.

No, sorry the lineage of his Grace the last Duke of Endinburgh. I am talking 1600s connection to the Counts of Leszno, the First Elected King of Poland lines. I am researching all the different lines also looking at Alamacha Del Gothic genealogy, Catholic Church and Byzin
Catholic, Russian and Greek church records all lined out for all the branches. I have one century or four generations to get right connect clans both to Count of Leszno lines and may not be the 11 line but the 4th, Poznań Project records list cities with churches, but their are multiple cities in different provinces. All families in the west seem to know the city and region they came from. 139 connections has turned in 1,000 to 4,000 people.

One or two mistakes. The plaque for Margaret Thatcher was for the brief time she spent in Colchester, Essex, nothing to do with Pimlico. Similarly, a photograph of the former Tory HQ in Smith Square, Westminster was used when talking about Pimlico. But still, very very interesting.

I believe this contains an error in when the peerage was created by Queen Elizabeth, presumably Queen Elizabeth the First. It was not 1874 as stated which was during the reign of Queen Victoria. May I suggest 1574?
