Cross wrote "Think Of Laura" about Laura Coffin Carter, an 18-year-old student at Denison University in Granville, Ohio who was killed by a stray bullet on April 17, 1982. At the time Cross was dating Paige McNinch, who was Laura's best friend and one of her sorority sisters. He wrote this song to honor Laura's memory.
After the song's release it was featured in the popular soap opera "General Hospital" as the love theme for the characters Luke and Laura, who were arguably the most well known of all daytime TV couples. Its use on the show vaulted the song up the charts, and in February 1984 it reached #9 on the US Hot 100 and went to #1 on the Adult Contemporary chart, where it stayed for four weeks. Boyz II Men recorded a new version of this song called "Think of Aaliyah (The Aaliyah Song)" in honor of the singer Aaliyah after she died in 2001.

LYRICS
Hey Laura, Laura
Hey Laura, Laura
Every once in a while
I'd see her smile
And she'd turn my day around
A girl with those eyes could stare through the lies
And see what your heart was saying
Think of Laura
But laugh don't cry
I know she'd want it that way
When you think of Laura
Laugh don't cry
I know she'd want it that way
A friend of a friend
A friend 'til the end
That's the kind of girl she was
Taken away so young
Taken away without a warning
Think of Laura
But laugh don't cry
I know she'd want it that way
When you think of Laura
Laugh don't cry
I know she'd want it that way
I know you and you're here
In every day we live
I know her and well, she's here
I can feel her when I sing
Hey Laura, where are you now?
Are you far away from here?
I don't think so
I think you're here taking our tears away
Think of Laura
But laugh don't cry
I know she'd want it that way
When you think of Laura
Laugh don't cry
I know she'd want it that way
ABOUT CHRISTOPHER CROSS
Christopher Cross burst onto the music scene with his 1979 self-titled debut album produced by Michael Omartian. The lead single “Ride Like The Wind” spent 4 weeks at #2 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, and was quickly followed up by Cross’ most popular single to date (and first #1 hit) “Sailing”, which later became known as the archetype for the Yacht Rock genre. In 1981, Cross became the first artist in Grammy history to win the “Big Four” most prestigious awards in a single night; Record of the Year (for the single “Sailing”), Album of the Year, Song of the Year (also “Sailing”), and Best New Artist. Later that year Cross released “Arthur’s Theme (Best That You Can Do)” which he co-wrote with Burt Bacharach, Carole Bayer, Peter Allen, and was the title-theme for the 1981 film “Arthur” starring Dudley Moorre and Liza Minnelli. The song earned Cross his second #1 and the Oscar for Best Original Song at the 1981 Academy Awards. Cross’ sophomore album “Another Page” was released in 1983 and featured the singles “Think of Laura” and “All Right”. Cross has sold over 10M albums worldwide and his songs have been covered and sampled by NSYNC, Puff Daddy, Avant, Shirley Bassey, Dione Warwick, and many more.

Never knew the story behind the song 😪
😢
So beautiful and CC has such a big heart ❤😢❤
And Abc never paid Mr. Cross for using the song 😱
You have NEVER heard ANYONE talk bad about this Man, OR His Music. You PROBABLY NEVER will. His songs are some of the most heartfelt Songs you'll ever hear.
Indeed!
Agreed 💯👍
True
Yes it is!!!
Here in the Philippines, his songs are one of the most played by long haul bus drivers and so does taxi drivers in their trip.
Christopher, you will never know how this song touched our lives. Our beautiful niece just about to graduate high school, a beautiful soul. Not long after this song came out she was killed in an auto accident. We played this awesome song at her funeral, her name was Lora. This was around 86, I think, and we still miss her so much. So I still listen to this song and remember her. You do a wonderful job singing it. Thank you God Bless.
😢lm sorry for your loss
Christopher...
come on tour in Western Canada....you'll sell out and Calgary would love the gift of your presence would be a great concert(s)
I’m so sorry for your loss, for me this song brings me back to when my oldest son (dice deceased) would run home from school.. he was in first grade, and I’d get a 7/11 big gulp and we’d get on my waterbed and watch General Hospital together, he was in love with Laura and would walk around the house singing that song. I still miss him like it was yesterday. Many blessings to you and your family ♥️🥰
Touched by your story, I'm sorry, wherever she is, she will be taking care of everyone who loves her, God bless you and your family...🙌😔😪💖🇧🇷
May Lora Rest In Peace 🙏
This song came out in 1983, the same time my mother was diagnosed with leukemia and died two months later. My mother’s name was Laura.
❤💔💗
😢
I’m so sorry
Sad.....
😢
He has one of the purest voices I've ever heard in my entire life.
"....a friend to the end...that's the kind of girl she was...." Her spirit still taking our tears away ..what a tribute to this young lady - now with Jesus.
This song struck me in the soul because of how beautiful it is. A fitting tribute to an amazing woman. His music is real and always good.
Gotta love him! Pure voice and pure soul! Can't beat that!
Christopher Cross voice is heaven, this is proof you don't need to shout to create brilliant music.
His singing style is one of my favorites. So soothing!
Yes, Christopher has a cadence like no other.
One of the Best ever ❤️👍
So chill AF
It has a somnolent effect
True, such a peaceful voice. I never heard a voice so soothing, as you said. And I wasn't born yesterday! Lol 💯 🌊
Went to his concert last Friday, August 2, 2024, in Puerto Rico. He closed the show with this song with just his pianist. Incredible and unforgettable moment. Thank you for coming to our island, Christopher. We love you.
Incredible! I just saw him Tuesday night in Clearwater, Florida, and he also closed with song! His voice was amazing and he is 73 years old!!! So glad we went!
Same here. Just saw him in Mobile, Alabama, two nights ago. Closed with this song. Amazing!
He was supposed to close with this song at his show at Cherokee, North Carolina, 8/10. However, we found out during the show that he was in the ER a few hours earlier and did the whole show on a stool. He was escorted off the stage and the house lights came on. I hope he’s doing better. Still a good show.
Just saw him last night at Hollywood bowl in Los Angeles ..he closed with this and it was a beautiful moment
@@viperdawgg2652You lucky dogs! 🎉❤
Will always be one of my favorite male vocalists of all time... the tenderness and beauty that his voice resonates with is signature, he's incredible ❤️
Christopher Cross, your heartfelt music transcends us to a place of peace and tranquility. You are a truly a gift from God the Almighty.
He truly is a gift from God; from his soothing voice in his song "Sailing", and then "Against the Wind" my twin sister and I fell in love with; all those years ago. His song " Think Of Laura" was best; with Christopher Cross' peaceful rendition. His sincerity, and the inspiration in that song. Wow. I can't believe no one agreed with your opinion in the year; except me. You are a very insightful man🙏, @robertcyr8364. 🎵🔔💎♥
1983 I was a 12 years old when this song came out in the radio. Man.. still takes me back to this day. LIFE was so good growing up as a kid back then. Though tragic this song may be lyrically.. the music the notes.. just warms my heart and touches my soul to the day. 2023.
I was 20 when this came out and it is one of my greatest memories.
I was ten years old that time....
i was 12 but it still gives me the same nostalgic, melancholic, sweet feeling until now.
Happy 60th Birthday Laura Coffin Carter 19 July 1963 ~ 17 Apr 1982.
Happy birthday, Laura. I feel a connection to you because my name is Laura and I had the pleasure of meeting Christopher Cross and never really knew the meaning behind the song which he took the time to tell the audience all about minus the graphics so when you think of her and you think of Laura And me laugh, don’t cry because I know I would want it that way, and so would she
@@tiffanylennox3285 Blessings, for both sweet Lauras. 🙏 🌹 🌹
Absolutely gorgeous song. Takes me back to the late 70s early 80s. Simpler awesome times to be a kid. Christopher Cross is the soundtrack to those more free times. He always makes me smile. Takes you away from life's troubles
Those were great days to be a kid!
Its a song about a girl killed by gang fight crossfire, it's not really carefree
Not all people had better times. I loved this song, it brought me to tears. I had tried to take my life a few times. Once after being raped at 15, also when I tried to leave my husband. I listened to this and wondered if anyone would think of me if I left this world. I left my late first husband with my three year old. She saved me. I had to live to protect her. This song still brings me to tears. Rest in Peace Laura, and all the Laura's out there.
Laura was a friend of my sister; she was a very sweet person with a big heart & would go out of her way to help anyone if she could. Fly high sweet angel.
Are we talking about Laura Bishop Lancaster oh my God I'm balling my eyes out I don't know but it sounds just like her
Same Laura BISHOP
At least Laura is smiling down from Heaven listening to this song dedicated to her.
Everything Christopher Cross sings is beautiful. Texans must be proud of him.
I love Chris. I wish so much that I can meet him
What does a government have to do with anything??? Texas is a terrible government.
Wow...he is even look more handsome here..
How a billion people aren't subscribed to Christopher Cross is crazy to me. I'm 48 and listen to everything from death metal to disco to classical. Cmon people
What a haunting and soothing voice you have Christopher Cross. You are one of the rare gem of this world healing people with your song
You do know he doesn't read these right?
One of the most beautiful songs ever written. The key changes are just wonderful.
There have been more than 35 million songs written. You've heard all of them? That's amazing.
@@thomasjensen6243 I’m sorry you seem unhappy with things. Listen to Think Of Laura again, it’s one of the most beautiful songs ever written. The key changes are just wonderful.
@@lookherenow I'm sorry you don't understand the English language....very sad.
This song will forever remind me of my beautiful & vibrant aunt Laura! She was the definition of health and wellness but left this world far too soon from pancreatic cancer. With each passing year it gets harder and harder not knowing I could see or talk to her when I’m having a rough day. I am forever thankful that she drew me closer to God and continues to leave an immense impact on my life. My guardian angel💜
My condolences, @kileybrown9431. My sweet Daddy died from pancreatic cancer also. He still is my guardian angel; looking down, just as your sweet Aunt Laura is over you. 😇😇 Blessings that she drew you closer to God are always with you. 🙏 🌹
General Hospital memories
Yes growing up… I always thought it referenced the show. But wat a tribute ❤
If women has a timeless voice like "KAREN CARPENTER" then a men has a timeless voice artist too! "CHRISTOPHER CROSS"
@rasseruuu373 so true, Iwas in Grade 7 @ Confedetation Park school, taking music, Mr. Cooper taught us about Christopher Cross, Abba, The Carpenters and John Lennon. I cried when I learned what the lyrics were about and that it was from a real person, Laura. I was truly blubbering and when I hear this beautiful yet sad song, I am right back in grade 7, 1981. a beautiful cadence in Christopher 's song for Laura. Peace Laura and Families.
Very true indeed!
Simply genius insight! You, I mean @rasseruuu373!🔯
Who’s here in May of 2024? Such a classic! I wish music in today’s society was done like this. Someone really needs to invent a time machine.
@britishcarfan9601 it's good also, we reminisce yet youth is now
@@britishcarfan9601 well and truly said.
Yes!!! That would be awesome 🙂
I recently lost my beloved sister to cancer. I find solace in this song.
Loves me some Christopher Cross! He sings like an Angel! He really does. First heard Sailing back in 1980 while in college. I was like whos THIS singer? I had just turned 18. Loved his music ever since! EVERY song! Now I'm 62. He got me through a LOT of late night have to finish by morning art projects man! This man's music is perfect for drawing or working on a project that requires your full concentration. It puts you in a quiet relaxed place that I can't quite fully explain. It just is. It's never distracting. Very cool musician! And I never really knew that this was a true story. It was a really terrible thing that happened to Laura. Hard to wrap my mind around this. But I'm trying to listen to the words and go by and follow what he's saying. She would not want people to be sad about it. It's hard not be sad though, especially when I saw her photo. But the song is truly one of the best I've ever heard emotionally and she must have been a wonderful person to get such a tribute! He sounds incredible!
Hands down one of the most talented and honourable men to hit the music scene. I'm 48 and Your music is timeless because of your unique voice, one of a kind vocals and a gentleman. Thank you for sharing your gift with the world.
I grew up listening to Christopher Cross. His music has this beautiful haunting melody that will take you to a place you want to stay at. Very beautiful music!!!
What a beautiful tribute he wrote for a special young lady. Very sad but I think highly of Christopher Cross for writing this song ❤
The part that gets me is when he sings " I can feel her when I sing. "
Who was the young lady?
@@englishlady8863please read the pinned comment by Christopher Cross. It's the first I think. It's also explained if you hit the more in the description. Next to how many views this video has. I hope that helps. Blessings. Let me know if you find it please.

his voice is timeless...
This song brings tears to my eyes. Dedicated to all women who have gone before us. Just an absolutely beautiful song for all the ages.
Her memory lives on…God bless you🙏🏼💖🙏🏼
I was born on 2002, my father used to play this song, even introduced christopher cros's songs. As ive keep playing these songs of him, I think I exist before 21st century. No doubt I love his songs so much.
Loved when they played this song on General Hospital and Luke and Laura reunited ❤️❤️
This is probably the greatest song I ever heard in my life, and one of the best composers ever put on earth
CC - always so sincere; and what a special sound to his voice still!
Really good comment. That’s so true. It’s also one of the most emotional songs ever.
I'm happy that Christopher Cross is remastering his songs and converting his live performances into music videos.
Just saw Christopher Cross perform in Las Vegas last night. This was the closing song and it sounded just beautiful now as it in this recording
I'm so jealous. I didn't even know he still did concerts.
His melodies never fail.
Coincidentally, I just remembered the song I wanted to listen to "Think of Laura". I typed the song name and ended up here. I noticed that today is April 17, 2024. She passed away 42 years ago. It's one of the most beautiful songs I've ever listened to. Laura, may your soul rest in peace.
We had this played at my daughter
Laura's funeral R.I.P Laura love and miss you every day and night xxx 💔💔💔

Hi everyone, I think Christopher Cross is the best singer of nostalgia songs in the world
This guys voice is like pure silk... hard to listen without tears.... reallly evokes emotion.
Still killing it Christopher...you still bring me to tears......your voice and music is just a treasure.....love you brother. Thanks.
Love this song so much! Brilliant writing and vocal. Takes me back to the early 80's. ❤
The most beautiful song ever written in someone's memory... Sorry, but it always make me cry, not laugh..
I am not certain if their are to many recording artists, that can so effortlessly envoke such genuinely beautiful, as well as at times tragic emotions, as Mr. Cross, has been able to convey over his incredible career. Such a truly profound artist...
how can we not cry ?
This song will never get old!
The greatest singer of all time. Pure talent no auto tune folks.
Hardly the 'greatest', but he's way up on that list!!
Well..I think he had a beautiful voice, but definitely not the best singer of all time. Steve Perry's (former Journey) vocals could not be touched..then there is George Michael, Freddie Mercury..Josh Groban, etc..
OH MY GOSH THAT’S SO BEAUTIFUL laugh don’t cry. Most people get to write ONE song that good. This guys has written so many
Incredibly beautiful song--wonderful lyrics and gorgeous chord progressions and key changes. Makes me cry every time I hear it.
Sorry Christoer but sometimes this song can get me crying remebering my mom and how she loved this song. I remember when she bought this cassette in '83. Love you and miss you mom so much. Thank you Christopher
I have loved this song since I was 12 years old. Like so many others thinking it was written for General Hospital because it was absolutely perfect for the storyline. As an adult, finding out the true meaning of this song hurt my heart terribly. Laura’s family must feel so honored to have her remembered with this incredible song. She must have been a wonderful person.
❤❤❤❤ thank you for taking the time to write to me. Your words meant more to me than you know. I’m having problems sending you a message so I’m giving it one last try. I keep getting an error from Google. I worked in the hospital as a radiation therapist for over 35 years so you have a heart that’s big and beautiful and to take the time to write to me was very special and I thank you from the bottom of my heart and when you think of Laura don’t cry because, I wouldn’t want it that way

Could stare through the lies
And see what your heart was saying
Think of Laura but laugh don't cry

Taking our tears away
Great song
Awesome
Thank you for doing the lyrics
Hard to believe this soft rock classic came out 40 years ago. Christopher Cross immortalized this type of music with his unique sounding songs.
This song never fails to bring tears to my eyes ...a very tragic accident... a young lady who was just starting to live and has a great life ahead of her passed away so suddenly. I could only imagine what her parents went through during those very difficult times. Thank you, Sir Christopher Cross for this beautiful song...Laura Coffin Carter will always be remembered.
It wasnt an accident. She was murdered by a gang member who didnt care if innocent bystanders were near their gang war. It was intentional
Beautiful message ❤
This song was new when I was a tween...my friend Earl Paul, his beautiful sister Laura came to school briefly in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan at Confederation Park elementary where many of my mates lived. That song was played in kusic appreciation class and everyone was singing to Laura and laughing. It was a great moment of Chris s music and gentle manner in acknowledging Laura's passing
Its etched on my Amygdala
Laura...always remembered with beautiful lyrics
great song from a great musician thank you Christophee for making the 80 s a great decade to grow up
I know what Bravery looks like! Your incredibly Mr Cross! Im sorry it took me so long to write this. Your soul has brought joy and hope to this world! Whenever I am sad and ready to give up, I turn on your music and I find a way! Your beyond human, and into the spiritual realm of great existential good! I, like most humans am beyond grateful for your art, honesty and bravery.

One of the most Beautiful Songs in the World! Coincedently this most popular Song was released 5 days before
my 18th Birthday, the year of
Our Graduation and one of my Best Friends my Senior Year was Laura...
Life is just Funny like That! ❤ Bonnie
There was girl named Laura, who was about 18 years old, in my freshman chemistry class in the fall of 1982. I was an older (26 years old), shy student. Her beauty caught my eye. When we returned for the second semester of chemistry in January 1983, she was gone, killed in a car accident. This song came out shortly afterwards and always reminds me of her.
The song was about his girlfriend's friend who was shot by a stray bullet in her car.
Unique voice , i really love listening to christphr cross voice. Never change even if years pass by
❤ Reminds me of high school in late 70s this song played everyday after school on General Hospital 😊 Who could forgot Luke and Laura

I know my brother RAR is listening in heaven! Miss you still so much and it’s been almost 37 years! This song is legend!
Grew up with Christopher's music! Beautiful and a compliment to the soundtrack of my life! Truly a brilliant artist, and phenomenal live performing! One of my favorites along with Swept Away from the Back of my Mind CD. An amazing gift to us he is!❤
