Sailing was recorded in 1979, utilizing the 3M Digital Recording System, making it one of the first digitally recorded songs to chart. It reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100 chart on August 30, 1980. The song won Grammy Awards for Record of the Year, Song of the Year, and Arrangement of the Year, and helped Cross win the Best New Artist award. Produced by Michael Omartian, it features Tommy Taylor on drums, Andy Salmon on bass, Rob Meurer on electric piano, and Victor Feldman on percussion. In 1980, Sailing was released as a single in Latin America under the translated (en español) title "Navegando".
On the Howard Stern radio show, Cross explained that sailing with his friend got him away from the trials and tribulations of being a teenager. Cross said that if the guy had taken him bowling and he enjoyed it, the song could have become "Bowling."
This live video was recorded at Warner Amigo Studios in 1980 and featured a live audio cut (different from the one featured in this upload) for use where the band would be lip-syncing on television, to be more realistic than the missing orchestra. This footage has been digitally enhanced to HD quality and features audio from the 2019 remaster of Cross' 1979 debut self-titled album:

LYRICS
Well, it's not far down to paradise
At least it's not for me
And if the wind is right you can sail away
And find tranquility
Oh, the canvas can do miracles
Just you wait and see
Believe me
It's not far to never never land
No reason to pretend
And if the wind is right you can find the joy
Of innocence again
Oh, the canvas can do miracles
Just you wait and see
Believe me
Sailing
Takes me away to where I've always heard it could be
Just a dream and the wind to carry me
Soon I will be free
Fantasy
It gets the best of me
When I'm sailing
All caught up in the reverie
Every word is a symphony
Won't you believe me?
Sailing
Takes me away to where I've always heard it could be
Just a dream and the wind to carry me
And soon I will be free
[Instrumental Bridge]
Well, it's not far back to sanity
At least it's not for me
And if the wind is right you can sail away
And find serenity
Oh, the canvas can do miracles
Just you wait and see
Really, believe me
Sailing
Takes me away to where I've always heard it could be
Just a dream and the wind to carry me
And soon I will be free
ABOUT CHRISTOPHER CROSS
Christopher Cross burst onto the music scene with his 1979 self-titled debut album produced by Michael Omartian. The lead single “Ride Like The Wind” spent 4 weeks at #2 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, and was quickly followed up by Cross’ most popular single to date (and first #1 hit) “Sailing”, which later became known as the archetype for the Yacht Rock genre. In 1981, Cross became the first artist in Grammy history to win the “Big Four” most prestigious awards in a single night; Record of the Year (for the single “Sailing”), Album of the Year, Song of the Year (also “Sailing”), and Best New Artist. Later that year Cross released “Arthur’s Theme (Best That You Can Do)” which he co-wrote with Burt Bacharach, Carole Bayer, Peter Allen, and was the title-theme for the 1981 film “Arthur” starring Dudley Moorre and Liza Minnelli. The song earned Cross his second #1 and the Oscar for Best Original Song at the 1981 Academy Awards. Cross’ sophomore album “Another Page” was released in 1983 and featured the singles “Think of Laura” and “All Right”. Cross has sold over 10M albums worldwide and his songs have been covered and sampled by NSYNC, Puff Daddy, Avant, Shirley Bassey, Dione Warwick, and many more. - Видеоклипы
The beauty of Sailing is that it resonates with so many people, it can be interpreted as simply being in a boat on the water or as complex as the transition we experience through art. I have been very touched by the way people relate to the song. - Christopher Cross
Reminds me of summers spent at the lake in my youth near Marble Falls, TX.
Takes me back in time riding around with my mother in her VW beetle.

Who else was listening to this in 1979 and is still listening in 2024!
It did not come out in 79 but released as a single in 1980. Kinda weird how it was on the album but released as a single later. I know I'm being picky. lol

Feel like sailing right now!
Yes 😌
Exactly
August 1980 was when it was on the Top 40 and Billboard Hot 100.
Every time I hear this song it takes me back to a job I had back then. I met this fantastic girl that I pretty much fell in love with immediately, but she didn't notice really. We went out a couple times as friends, I quit that job, didn't see her for months (I was 80 miles away) came back almost a year later on a fluke to that same company, and well, that girl has been my wife for 41 years now, two kids and three grandkids...ANYTHING can happen when you're not looking!! LOL
Wow! Precious!
Friend you made me cry. 😢
That's real ❤️ love
Thats class true love class
Amazing history to tell to your kids and your grandkids. I'm 17 and I really hope to meet a girl like you did and have and awesome history like you. I hate that nowadays most of the young people meet their couple online. I hope that there are girls out there that think like me. Again, incredible history.
I lost my mom in 2022. I close my eyes and remember her and just imagine her transitioning to the other side peacefully while listening to this song. This song speaks to the soul❤
As a black kid in the 70's, we traveled all over the U.S. every summer the day after the last day of school. Through all of the states and seeing many different people, this song will always stick with me forever. Still i see cows, the many corn rows, flat land everywhere. I Smell the air still. I'm a city boy from Cincinnati, but i love the country. Rock on bro!
I’m a city boy from Music City Nashville, 69 baby remember traveling them Highway’s Loving Thjs song 🤙🏽

What does being black have to do with it?
It doesn't matter colour, religion or creed. If you love music embrace it x
This boy owned the 1979 Grammy Awards. Christopher Cross is the only artist in Grammy history to win Album, Record, Song of The Year and Best New Artist categories in one night.
Yes I remember that night when he took all those and his songs sounded like nothing that was going on at that time. Phenomenal.
Wow 🎉
Did not know that, but i can understand why
I remember the night!!!!!! A great night!!!!
Then later he won an Academy award.
Let's be real, this song wasn't recommended to you, you searched for it, and because of that you have an awesome musical taste.
Yes Sir! 👊🏼😎
Absolutely 💯 😊
Yes youtube actually recommended this video to me just a couple days ago.
Ironically enough, I have attempted to find it (along with another one from him) in the past online rather unsuccessfully due to not really remembering his name.
I'm terrible with names of artists/musicians...
No but ok still love it
Thank you ❤
This is the song that always pops up when I am thinking of my mom. She died from cancer in 2017. I like to think she is sailing away in heaven.

Great song for a celebration of life.
What year ?
Aww thats so touching 👐 wouldn't have been a dry eye in the house 🥹
Me, 73 born. Love the music from our generation.
The year was 1980 and I was only a 13 y/o girl losing my dad for cancer. This song was my way to escape reality. I miss you, daddy - one day, we will be reunited. ❤
God bless you
You will be with him again, I am sure of that. God Bless.
So sorry for your loss, sending you a hug.
I’m so sorry 😞 😢Hugs
I also think that we will all see each other again one day.And then it's nice when we can all hug each other. Ich denke auch das wir uns eines Tages alle wiedersehen werden. Und dann ist es schön, wenn wir uns alle umarmen können.
This song is four minutes and 17 seconds of what a little touch of Heaven on Earth would be like.
My aunt was flying home from Florida to Iowa and sat with Christopher Cross on the plane and he told her he was going somewhere to become famous.
This song has NEVER aged for me, and there were so many musical nuances in the music, coupled with lyrics that are like a gentle lullaby. My husband and I were both teens in the 80s, and he has always been a devoted metal music fan. I played this timeless song on the way home from Florida, and as we passed the ocean on the way out, he and I both felt every word and every note. He has been a Christopher Cross fan ever since❤
Here I am sitting. Its march 15th 2024. Just sharing the beauty of this song with my cousin who passed so extremely quickly of pancreatic cancer! Tomorrow her funeral!💔 Oh I know she's here, listening n watching as I move to this song! A song that means..to me.. about being free! Free to explore anything your heart desires! Like a blank canvas anything is possible! Dreams! Take you away from the world if only until we wake! So beautiful!

"It's not far back to sanity..." My mom suffered from depression most of her life. I used to listen to this song and pray that she would find peace of mind and heart. She then, has since passed on. 1980, driving across the bridge from Somers Point NJ into Ocean City, this song playing on the old Buick 225, the sun hitting the ripples of the waves around the bridge and those "light chimes" that you hear throughout the song playing.. 20 years old, alone and not a worry in the world. Would drive back to my apartment, boyfriend waiting there to greet me after a long day at his job. Married soon after and did the same with our kids,, Life was good and still is, 44 years later. We hit the beach often in our golden years, children grown, memories made and still being made. Play this song when driving to the shore still.
I see it ..
Yep, back when young people got married and made it work. Same general age here, married in 1979 and still enjoying life together!

I think Christopher Cross should be in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame his songs are Amazing and Awesome

Simply beautiful. Back when the music was more important than the image.
So true
"WELL PUT!!!"
The way it always should be…..
Couldn’t agree more. The simplicity and beauty of music itself is stripped today for an image portrayed. Music doesn’t need anymore than itself
People were more fine tuned to learning music in groups (pooling ideas etc) back when this came out and didn’t have all the distractions of today. Wonderful song and performance.
I named my daughter Serenity after the lyrics in this song. Thank you Christopher ❤❤
wow, i named my son Ashley after the character in gone with the wind movie!
I listened to this in 1979 and still listen to it on repeat in 2024. The best of timeless music is that none on my children were born yet when it was released and they love it just as much.❤
It's1979 and the whole band looks like it. But Christopher Cross is timeless, he looks like a young man from the late 90s
One of the most beautiful songs I've ever heard in my life. It brings me to tears almost every time. Thank you Christopher Cross.
Agreed, smoothest song ever.
Yes I agree and me too it brings me to tears ❤
It captures a place and a time I think we experienced in childhood( innocence, carefree simplicity)....or a place and time we wished we had if we didn't....that we are desperately trying to find again.😔❤
contrarily, for many of us it reminds us of an era where our parents were completely ignoring their children and going off and playing racquetball and partying with friends and doing other stupid Boomer shit... The memories it brings back are only of regret - wishing those people had bothered to be humans and not selfish Boomers for one day in their lives.

Songs like that, just won't sop making me think that we were better as people and society back then.
And, before someone start saying things like: "this was just a song, it doesn't represent an entire generation."
I'm not only talking about the usage of music to speak about feelings, decent feelings to be precise. It's also about the whole world been amazed by this beautiful inspiration.
That's why I'm saying: people were better back then.

What Christopher did here was produce a piece of art for the ages. It cuts through all strife, all hurt, all pain. Its one of the most redemptive pieces of music ever produced and it affects what it describes: surrender of the self through being immersed in utter beauty. I think that this is Christopher's lived experience. Few can regift such moments for everyone else, but that is what he did through the miracle of his canvass. Thank you Christopher.

This song; the lyrics, the music, the vibe, is a total balm. It’s a miserable day today but this sing makes me feel hopeful and happy.
I was listening to this back in 1979 at age 17 steel listening now at age 62. Love this song.
One of the most beautiful songs ever ❤🥲❤️
What a pretty and wonderful woman ,hello my darling ?
My dad retired from the United States Navy and this song was edited into a deployment video for the aircraft carrier he last served our country on! This song has always made me think of my dad, 6 weeks has gone by since he made it to his heavenly home. It’s a daily struggle and this is a song I wanted played at his memorial and today it serves as comfort. Dad loves the USA and his Navy
Sorry for your loss
God bless you and your Dad!
❤❤❤
Fair winds and following seas. May your Dad RIP
so sorry for your loss. he sounds like an amazing man. its always going to burn but it gets better and he would want you to feel nothing but happiness. I say that to myself when it's really bad n my heart is hurting. it helps bc it's true.
One of the most beautiful songs ever written. Takes me back to a better time.
One of the most relaxing chill ass songs ever made, Christopher Cross boys and girls
The very beginning of this song is something that is out of this world
M Omartian wonderful arrangements !
Precioso 😊
Se vc voltou aqui para ouvir esse som Parabéns! Seu gosto é Excelente!!!❤❤😍😍
This guy got better looking with each passing year. He's more handsome today than he was in the 80's. And of course, his songs are beautiful ❤
I don't know who this beautiful man is but God is speaking through him in Isaiah 60 today in 2024, it's true! I've seen the ships and they are magnificent! God will come to you, wherever you are, you just have to believe!
The vocals, drums, guitar, chimes, piano, all put together makes this a masterpiece 😢. So uplifting, but sorrowful in it's beauty!
Absolutely 💕
Well said!
Yes well said my man...
As a black child, this type of music gave me out of body experiences the first time. Now, know how to😊 build wooden boats sold one the other day. Crazy
A wonderful story. We are all brothers and sisters under the sun and moon

You make me cry…😢😢😢
When I asked if I thought you weren't my friend I just don't think I can bear it
Sailing to me is escaping a harsh reality and disappearing in a meditative state. Thank you for a wonderful song.
❤❤🙏
As I always say, music is the closest thing we have to a time machine. Period.
We are currently in the winter of our generation aka the fourth turning where everything dies to make way for next generation. When this song came out it was the summer of our generation when everything looked optimistic. Now you have a corpse as a President to represent the death of the American dream.
I agree.👌
@@discodirk48i disagree with your president comment. Perhaps we are nearing a new civil war and that’s fine with me. Willing to die for my black beliefs and final freedom. I almost want it. You and I have lived, seen better days but for us BIPOC, it’s not been fair and equal, ever. We as a nation move forward regardless who our president might be or we pariah. I’m ready with way. We can be friends or foe. If it’s the ladder…..Imma be relentless!
Taking a few minute ride back to our beloved 80's where times and people were soo much simpler and the world was our oyster
It's like he's tryna to show us something so special and elusive, magical right in front of us that we just can't fathom, because they all told us we cant
It's not to far to never never land,..no reason ,to pretend ?.....wind is right you will find a door a door to eternity...
Like on some peter pan shit..for reals
It's 1993. You grab a shopping cart and start heading to the produce section. Then this banger comes on the speaker system. Grocery shopping just became a transcendental experience. Today is going to be a good day.
When l was a teen living at home, l remember recording this from the radio with my small tape deck 🙂 l thought this was the most beautiful song ld ever heard.
A song of such purity and serenity that can take my soul to lovely places. I just close my eyes and listen!
This song is the sweetest most gentle reminder that there is more...
my daughter, as an infant, would always cry non-stop in the car. one day i pulled up this song to drown out the noise and she instantly stopped...Sailing and Sheena Easton - For Your Eyes Only were the only songs that would keep her quiet. She turned 18 this year and when i play these songs for her she says, "i remember something soothing about them". Thank you CC!!!
The voice, lyrics and the music..timeless..The song deserved the Grammy Awards for Record of the Year 1980
I think this song should win an award every year because it will never go out of date Its the most beautiful music ever made! When Im outside in the summer and warm winds blow this musick describes my feelings Christopher Cross and all the musicians get an everlasting stand of ovation ❤
