After several months my 2022 white Subaru WRX Premium manual has just come in. The Topher solidified my decision. I’m 65 years old and have owned numerous cars through the years and this car is the most fun I’ve ever had. This is the first time I’m commented on RUclips. My hats off to The Topher.

My brother(s)! I stopped mid-review to look at comments and saw this, and had to reply. So much to say... To TheTopher: you are the man. I bought a 2022 2-door Jeep Wrangler 6 months ago because of your review. You nailed everything that I needed to know. You get it (at least according to me). Unfortunately, I'm on my second round of Death Wobble and I don't have the patience (or the absolute love) to stay with the Jeep. So, being on the GR Corolla list but thinking I probably wont get one for a couple of years, I was thinking about alternatives. I'm an old Subi guy (got a tuned '02 wagon in the garage), but I lost interest when they stopped the wagon in '14. I started thinking maybe I could put my bike in the trunk with the seats down and my dog might be happier riding in the back seat rather than the back of the Wrangler, so I test drove your exact car today. I watched a ton of videos and read reviews prior to today but kept thinking that the issues reviewers were talking about won't matter to me in real world driving (I drive just like you, haha). So what if Subaru detuned the launch capability - who the hell does that anyway...? I drive fast but I don't "race". To John Grebel: I'm with you on all counts. I'm 62 and my owning and driving experience is extensive, and my standards are high (I walked away from an X2 M35i because it just didn't work for me...). Today's test drive was a real eye-opener. I don't think I've ever felt as immediately comfortable and confident as I did in the WRX today. Intuitive is an understatement. I don't recall even thinking about driving, it all just flowed (and I did enough maneuvers at speed to make my salesman a little nervous - just typical stuff though, right...). I didn't buy it on the spot because I'm not sure about the color(s), and I need to make sure my bike will really fit without too much hassle, but I'm going back. These got a lot of meh reviews when they came out, and I can see why my older son with his fully built Speed3 might think it's ugly and lame (tame) but this is a driver's car if you truly like driving and you're past the age when you blast out at green lights and weave through freeway traffic (Teslas have us all beat anyway). Subi designers and engineers must be so frustrated that the initial collective response was so mild. Their sweet revenge might be that they built an adult WRX for those of us who remember, drove, and owned the early ones, and we're the ones that are gonna buy 'em now (and, with the discounts that are already happening due to shipments finally coming in, versus the markups that will be in place for a long time with the GR Corolla, this is a buy-it-now and enjoy bargain...).

A lot of people want to know - WRX or Elantra N? It's a tough one! Ultimately it boils down to how you're going to use the car and what you can find at MSRP, but here are my thoughts:
-WRX For AWD & Winter fun. Fantastic Manual. Perfect for rallycross, ice racing, does ok on track with modifications (brakes, cooling). If you want a CVT WRX, I'd get an Outback Wilderness instead, just as fast but with more usability/off-road capability. Could use an exhaust, better brakes. Wouldn't mess with power too much, factory tune is fantastic (and more reliable). More fun in the winter.
-Elantra N if you're doing track days and want serious all-round performance right out of the factory. Manual is fantastic with some shifter bushings, DCT is also really good, but has a recall right now. Elantra N feels better built and higher quality than WRX, tech is great too. All the exhaust, suspension tuning, brake cooling, etc. adjustability you'd want without having to go to the aftermarket. Less fun in the winter, more fun the rest of the time.
    Both look weird.
    Both have handbrakes.
    Both you'll love to drive.

I'm picking up my '23 Premium tomorrow and like others have said here, this review was one of the ones that sort of solidified my interest in the car. I've been loosely interested in the WRX for many years, but never could justify it, especially being a dad with a kid in a full car seat, but now that my kiddo is in a backless booster, I don't need as much backseat room, and it's time for dad to have a fun daily.

@@jamesg8246 Compared to my 18 STI, the steering is no longer hydraulic and the shifter is no longer mechanical linkage. I would say both of those aspects are not as good as my 18 STI. However, the steering is sharp (quick steering rack). The clutch is a bit easier to use than before and it seems like the engagement is more forgiving. I remember having to be very precise with my STI clutch. The engine tuning is where is really shines compared to the old car. It’s a joy to rev out despite the relatively low redline. I wouldn’t say it’s overall an old STI replacement because there are so many aspects of a car that makes a car a good car but they updated some of the crucial components that make a difference. I was able to get over 26 mpg on the highway on a recent trip which was definitely impossible with my old EJ.

Been enjoying my WRX Sport (Canadian Premium Trim) for a few months now.
First manual car of mine, still learning how to improve my pedal dance.
I think the contrasting colors actually looking not bad. White and Silver. (Mine is Silver)
I don't really like the New Orange or Red color.
The Deep Blue looks not bad. Although I don't think it's available in Canada.
Disagreeing with Topher on a few subjects:
The trunk opening isn't great. It is at a 45 degree cut. As in, the opening, when viewing for the rear, is not a rectangle.
So some larger pieces need to be slided in at an angle, where the opening is wider.
It seems that I can go Traction Full Off at a Slow Roll.
    Potential Buyers Please Note:
Android Auto is still 16:9 on this car. Which means it is tiny. (Like the Backup Camera)
You can choose to live with it, it still works just fine.
Apple Car Play does go full screen.
In my opinion, the 6th Gear is Way Too Short. Making this much more of a City Car, not a Highway Car. I would really like to see 2200RPM at 80MPH - 130KM/H.
The engine + exhaust is quiet while driving, but we you cold start, it is LOUD. You may like that or not. Lots of people think I have aftermarket exhaust. (And I think Subaru did that on purpose.)
Harman Kardon sound system is not bad. Make sure your door pockets are clear of any hard-ish objects. (Even Water Bottles)
The bass would rattle them around pretty good.

Current 2022 Golf R owner who is “downgrading” to a 22 WRX limited. My thoughts… Golf R DSG is 1000% faster than the wrx, not even close, and the R’s launch control really is remarkable, but its just not very engaging to daily drive, and I got bored quite quickly of it. The R’s manual has seen a lot of issues from what I see in my fb groups, so I was on the hunt for different AWD car. Wasn’t expecting anything out of the wrx but I took one out for a test drive for shits and giggles. Was blown away at how well it drove. Super engaging, shifting felt great, clutch bite point was great, and the cladding is a huge plus for someone who only has 1 car. I can take it down a dirt path to a campsite, or even drive some rougher roads without worrying much. Definitely something you cant say about a golf R. Also, I found the suede wrx limited seats to be far superior in comfort than the R seats. While the R seats looks sweet, they are not very comfy, and my back is constantly aching after long drives.
TLDR: Sure you lose some power and features (like a hud, or vented seats) going with a WRX over an R, but even a limited is about $10k cheaper for 95% of the excitement, and at a minimum worth taking a test drive in.

I got my 22 Premium trim at the end of August, got it as my first manual daily car(even got it below MSRP) and it's been a great car so far. I've tacked on about 5000 miles on that time, really pushing 2nd to 3rd gear will give you pops and bangs on stock tune, it'll keep pulling all the way to the top of the gears. The only real cons of the car that I see as a daily is suspension can be a little stiff, after 3 hours of driving the seats can be a bit uncomfortable, brakes are kinda subpar when you really need to brake, the amount of road noise is pretty high even compared to my last car which was a mercury and android auto can be an absolute pain at times randomly disconnecting.
Those are only small gripes in my time of ownership but otherwise it's an absolutely lovey car that I can see myself having for a very long time enjoying every bit of it.

Absolutely hate the infotainment in the new GTI, and I never really understood the hype and engineering behind Subarus until I drove a new Legacy on a road trip through really bad weather conditions. The AWD is so well integrated in Subarus. It’s seamless, and it does such an incredible job. In most brands the AWD system is an afterthought, but in Subarus it just adds an air of invincibility to the driving experience. Couple that with the really good stock engine tuning and short gearing on this new WRX, and it becomes much more difficult to decide between this and a GTI. I adored the MK7 GTI, but I’m not entirely sold on the MK8 yet.

Responds really well to tunes but then the clutch won’t hold up. Another thing is how much they’re marked up at dealerships. I really wish Subaru would bring back the WRX wagon/hatchback, or put this WRX drivetrain (complete with manual transmission) into the Crosstrek. From a practicality and usability standpoint the Crosstrek is kind of perfect for me, but it is so underpowered that the only time it gets your heart racing is when you're trying to merge onto the expressway with anyone or anything else in the car. Couple that with the Crosstrek's greater wind resistance and it's pretty obvious it should have had the 2.5l engine on every trim from the day it launched. The 2019 felt like a pre-alpha build; super rough and useless first gear, jerky as hell, on/off power (off most of the time), heat soaked during the summer months in like 15 seconds, and ran horribly if the A/C was on.
I've driven my 2022 full-out while blasting A/C in 105 degree weather, and it hasn't missed a beat. Power when you ask for it, smooth, much flatter handling and higher stiffness in the chassis. It doesn't jerk around in parking lots like the old one. It doesn't pull timing every 5 seconds. It's the way the WRX should always have been.

Excited to see what Subaru does at the mid-cycle refresh. The giant infotainment screen and lack of physical HVAC controls isn't going to change, but hopefully the steering gets some more weight/feel, and there's a PP or tS package. As far as looks, I think they should at least have a paint matched flares option as a dealer accessory, and the rear clip needs to flow better with the wedge shape the rear quarters and trunk make. Even if they don't touch the power or revs, I'd consider trading my VA at that point. Maybe. Still more interested in the GRC.

@@nateafcsouth Expect some small upgrades in terms of tech and the GT trim to get a Brembo option in 2024. 2025 is most likely when there will be a mild facelift. It's much more likely Subaru makes just small tweaks to the exterior and instead focuses updates on something like a digital dash for higher trim levels, along with some minor revisions to suspension.

Hot take: Aside from the headlights being too small its a design upgrade

Agreed. The previous model looks too bland and tame.
