The practical effects, the short shorts, the daring do and the glorious costumes. It's amazing what they achieved with the technology available at that time.
I remember when I took a Space History class in college, my professor showed the first episode of this serial. Some time later, I watched the whole thing on my time, and it was totally worth it

Things were definitely racier in the 20s and early 30s. That's the "pre-code" era: In 1934 the motion picture industry started adhering to the Motion Picture Production Code, which prohibited lots of things, like profanity, racy outfits, etc.

Love how Dale faints immediately from lack of air, while everybody else runs, fights, talks for 10+ minutes.
And, for a machine that is vital for their survival, they only have one guy operating the controls and no security.

I forgot what a HOTTIE Dale was in these early episodes, and that outfit! After this story they made her a brunette with short hair and dressed her like Peter Pan. What a loss.

King Kala was played (poorly) by actor Duke York, who went on to appear as many monsters and freaks (Wolfman, Zulu spear thrower, "Angel" the hunchback, Nikko, etc) in the classic shorts of the Three Stooges. LR
Imagine. 1936, the Great Depression, The world is in the beginning of WWII. Your a kid with 15¢. That would get you a bottle of soda, a bag of popcorn, cartoons, serials, and a double feature. An entire Saturday afternoon for 15¢.
Back when wages were about forty cents/hour. It'll be interesting to compare 1936 to its centennial. Did I say "interesting," or "depressing?"
WWII was still in the future at that point.
@@brianwhite2104 Depending upon how you view history WWII there is a case for starting with an earlier date possibly as early as 1931 when Japan invaded Manchuria. The Second Sino-Japanese War was fought between the Republic of China and the Empire of Japan between 1937 and 1945 which is considered part of World War II, and often regarded as the beginning of World War II in Asia. If you use a wider global view of the world and war the ground work of what would be WWII had already started.
@@vestafreyja I think a credible case can be made for WWII starting in 1937 with the outbreak of war between Japan and China, but the invasion of Manchuria in 1931 seems more analogous to Germany's invasion of Czechia in that it did not immediately provoke war.

I watch these old Flash Gordon serials as a kid back in the seventies. KBSC, The local UHF station, showed these in the late afternoon and on the weekends, and they definitely weren't colorized. And despite the limited production values, I found these serials very entertaining.
However, I had forgotten entirely how cute Jean Rodgers was, even though her real name was Eleanor Dorothy Lovegren. It's too bad she only had a handful of screen credits during her 15-year acting career.
Who knows how world-renowned this Swedish beauty would have been if she had stuck with her acting and gotten bigger roles in better movies. (⊙‿⊙✿)
Conquering, controlling, hostile, violence, such human thoughts, it's what makes us truly animals and separates us for a higher existence, our egos keep us down. Greed, jealousy, cruelty, truly primitive animals.
What more could anyone ask for? The women are gorgeous and sexy, the men are handsome and hot, the costumes emphasize that, the bad guys and gals are true villains, not just antiheroes, the good guys and gals are sterling, not troubled. It was good times.

Remember this being shown on Saturday morning matinee in Fifties UK …The Gaumont cinema was bedlam with all us little kids shouting warning to Flash when Ming the Merciless appeared…We were all to young to realize what a hottie Dale was….
