Is this something to do with my end? The captions keep coming on default even though I done have thst set thst way. I have tried everything. Does your channel have some kind of default caption mode turned on. I hate tgis because anyone can turn than on on their own but I want to erratic all modern crap on my screen and I don't watch film to read. If it was a foreign movie or a silent film with its own subtle that would be different. But that ugly crap popping up constantly is stressful and exactly what I'm trying to avoid in life. Along with lights that tell me I'm using the thing I'm using a beeps that tell me I did what I just did.
Is it stuck that way on your end or am I just missing something and driving myself crazy?
I'm amazed at how good the condition of the film. Someone did an awesome job preserving it back in the day.
There are several computer-generated effects that are layered in such a way that "cleans up" the erosion of the quality in the film. The original film looks nothing like this. It's not just color.

7:15 - "you'll never see dale arden again." - perhaps my favourite line in any flash gordon franchise - i do so love when villains helpfully talk to themselves for the benefit of the audience.
For something that's filmed almost a hundred years ago, it's pretty good.
Yep, the effects might be kinda laughable today, but they still knew how to tell a story, and managed to keep the audience 'engaged', with characters you could actually care about!
This was why we kids all went to the movie theatre on Saturday mornings. Because of the way each episode ended with the life of the good guys in danger, we called these short movies "Cliff Hangers."
When my mom was a kid, they were playing these serials on TV.
Still better than anything Hollywood can produce today.

Despite some dated effects and over the top acting, this is still a really great serial. You can totally see where George Lucas got his inspiration for Star Wars, as you have the opening crawls and later there’s a floating city

I think that Flash Gordon can be brought back with the star treatment. Alex Raymond wrote great stories that inspired the epic tales in these serials and in franchises like Star Trek and Star Wars. I may be in a minority but I don't think the 1980 film did Flash Gordon and the legacy of Alex Raymond justice. From 1936 to 1940, the writers, producers, and directors at Universal Studios were doing the best that they could with the technology available and the mindset of that time. But, 1980 is after the first Star Wars film, Superman: The Movie, Star Trek: The Motion Picture and the same year that Superman II, and Empire Strikes Back were released. Flash Gordon 1980 could've been better. There's no excuse. The effort put in here in these old serials is more apparent to me.

In 1950-51, at age 5, I appeared on a very early t.v. show, hosted by Buster Crabbe! He briefly interviewed three
boys ( I was the youngest) & afterward, he brought us to the 'control room', where we saw one of his 1940's,
western movies! The studio was very basic & 'primitive' by today's standards! Soon after, Buster's 1936 "Flash
Gordon" serials were shown on t.v., with great enthusiasm! I'll bet Buster would have loved this 'colorized' version! R.I.P.!
Filmmakers of today need to take note that this is what pure entertainment looks like.
Not much of a story though, and the characters lack depth and are stereotypical.
@@douglasfreeman3229 That did not matter to me as a grammar school kid watching these on WPIX TV with Chuck McCann hosting. Some years of maturity later, the serial provided new insights which for me were centered on Priscilla Lawson and also Jean Rogers which demanded my watching this serial again with a new awareness..

What a Universal classic series. I'm nearly 60 now, but I watched these in my School holidays, as a child in England, all those years ago. I'm a universal horror fan, and I also note, that most of the music soundtracks were used from Horror films of the 30s from Universal! Great stuff though, and I'm a great Hammer film especially Horror!!! Thanks and in Colour as well!!! Nigel UK

Watched this in the 1950’s reruns they would put on TV. Love the Art Deco styling and sci-fi imagination of things!
Bliss...sitting with your mates in the local flea pit on a Saturday morning..munching popcorn ...watching Flash and Mongo...as well as Superman with George Reeves...fabulous days...fabulous memories
Starting with a children's show called Wondderama on Sunday mornings with Sonny Fox, I have seen this serial many times. I think this colorized version is by far the best! I hope the other chapters will be shown C3.

Buster Crabbe also played Buck Rogers and Tarzan. He also played Gordon on an episode of Buck Rogers TV show.
YES!,I saw that episode too. I always thought they should've had Buster Crabbe come on the show as a permanent addition. Brigadeer Gordon was a great character!

and to think that George Lucas wanted to remake this but couldn't get (afford) the copyright, so he went ahead and created his own universe.....Star Wars... quite a twist of fate......

Watched this as a kid and never even dawned on me it was made in 1936. I thought it was made last week.
My mom used to watch it when she was a kid too. She was the one who told me about 1930's movie serials.
Me too when I saw it in late 70s or early 80s as a kid on tv.

These old serials were shown on 50's Kansas City TV. The host wore a mask and what looked like a motorcycle cop's uniform. He called himself "Commander 9."

Every afternoon at 5PM, when I was a kid in 1954, I would huddle in front of our blurry new TV and eat these up. I knew they were stupid but they were almost the only space action movies there were. And in those days, when you saw a movie once, that was it.
Of all science fiction characters, Ming is the Crux of the world rulers. A great characters and great ruler all at once. I salute Middleton...he handled the role magnificently a gave us one of the best movie villains ever in 😊😊

My first taste of a 1930s serial and, I gotta say, it's an interesting look at the 1930s.
I love this movie when I was 10 years old
I applaud the attempt, but the colourization is completely unstable and frequently drops out whenever there is more than just slight movement.
I'd like to see these colourized, but this software doesn't seem up to the task.

@@douglasfreeman3229 No, it's not, but then, it is relying on a computer algorithm to do the work.
Computers are wonderful tools, but they cannot think, they cannot assess or evaluate, they cannot intuit.
You give them parameters, and they complete a task within those parameters but if something un-accounted-for occurs, they cannot improvise.
Had the content creator taken on more of the brain work instead of relying on the computer to do it all, the result would have been better because, try as they might, Computers will NEVER replace human ingenuity.
Jeanne D' Arc produced in France was colorized in 1900 by the producer that hand painted black and white film. He later married gal that starred in the movie.

Awesome can you do Buck Rogers next that was the better serial in my opinion.

From the beginning this was meant to be for adults. For its time and release during Code Hollywood it was considered terribly sexual. For a B-movie it had a blockbuster budget - $350K USD. That is in 1930s Depression dollars and was unheard of. Note how the Hayes Code grudgingly permitted what would known as a bikini or bare midriff look BUT the actresses had to have their navels covered. Decades later this same problem would come up in Star Trek:TOS. Roddenberry hated that belly buttons had to be covered in the William Ware Theiss wardrobe designs (remember The Gamesters of Triskelion? Remember the drill Thrall's tin foil bikini? ) To have his revenge Roddenberry did something in his next Sci Fi series; he not only dressed the mutant women in two piece outfits but he gave each woman TWO belly buttons plainly shown on screen - take THAT Standards & Practices! "I Dream of Jeannie" was nearly taken off the air because Eden's belly button showed but they never had the cojones to stand up to S&P the way Roddenberry would.
Early version coloriser it uses information in the film and that why it all over the place.
I'll tell you this and I'm only fifty- Larry Buster Crabbe cut a real heroic figure..maaaan.

📺🎨🤖❓... I assume this was colorized by A.I. ...as it interpreted Flash's ubiquitous bright Red⚡ costume in varying shades of gray...still the overall effect of the added pastel color is very positive giving this olde B & W serial, a soft Art Deco, yet unEarthly ambiance....
I thought I simply had unkept facial hair, but it seems I was a lion-man from Mongo all along. Who'd have thought!
