Vultan, King of the Hawkmen, certainly is a jolly fellow.
It's amazing to me that my father saw these new in their first release to the theaters every Saturday. And that he still watches them on DVD to this day. Guess that proves that charm and sheer entertainment value never grow old!
Americans actually like clean entertainment.
It looks like some "film experts" came here merely to mock these serials instead of enjoy them for what they are. If you don't like them, don't watch them. This channel is those of us who appreciate them. Some of you "advanced", or "culturally evolved" movie buffs may be delighted to know that all of the technothrillers that you enjoy today, Star Wars, later incarnations of Star Trek, Dune, the MCU, all sprung from Flash Gordon. This serial is the granddaddy of modern sci-fi films.
At 76, I watched "Flash Gordon" on t.v. 70 years ago in the early 1950's & was fascinated
by it, especially the first 1936 serial! The colorization adds a whole new dimension to it!
p.s. Even though I was only a little kid, I would have watched it just to see the luscious Dale
Arden (Jean Rogers)! WOW!
Saw this film only in the late 1970s. They predicted everything in 1936 except for the castle in the sky they, haven't built it yet.
More of a Princess Aura guy myself. :D

Remember watching these during the summer holidays on TV in the 80s. Had a similar reaction with Buster Crabbe :D

My ray gun almost went off when I saw Jean Rogers.

You have to remember the era this was made, it must've been kinda shocking, this was an era when women wore huge gowns at the beach, so those costumes were racy to say the least
Even now Princess Aura is something else.
Despite the dated effects, it was pretty impressive back in 1936
I like how it's not either alien or futuristic, but it nails weird. With it color, I can imagine the sunny lots outside of the Hollywood studio teeming with 1930's life.

King Vultan's 'entertainers' at 11:19. That looks like it's from some real life full scale stage production. Or did they really put all that together for a few seconds of one episode. Anyone know what this is?

I don't think that I've seen such bad acting in my life. And that includes The Room and Ed Wood movies. This seems as if they made up their lines as they went along.
