Whats great about Upward Compression with vocals is that you can bring up all the timber in a voice without having to eat the mic, so in other words, it's a pseudo way of sending the mic almost down your throat (depending how aggressive you get with it) while avoiding the plosives or otherwise unnaturalness of being so close to the mic/capsule. Its what I've used for years to make my tracks sound so textured.
Devvon... God bless you man! Giving us industry secrets that NO ONE on youtube is talking about. For free! Along with templates, and stepo by step tutorials. And on the other hand blessin us with your vocals with your music.
So upward compressing isn't actually compressing then? It's just bringing up volume below a certain threshold? Therefore, maintaining dynamics, but bringing up low level details? Thanks for the great video btw!
Ryan Reach No it is still compression. All types of compression are about adjusting gain above or below a certain threshold. Downward compression, or classic compression, lowers what’s above the threshold of a signal, then gain is used to bring up the entire signal because it’s been made quieter. Upward compression is the opposite in that it brings up what is below the threshold of a signal. See, in both cases it’s just a matter of adjusting gain. Upward compression lowers dynamics just like downward compression does. A more dynamic signal is one that has a higher dB range between the loudest part of the signal and the quietest part of the signal, so lowering that difference with any kind of compression lowers dynamics. However, a more dynamic signal doesn’t necessarily mean a better signal for the mix; if parts of the signal are so low that you cannot hear them in the mix or so high that they overpower the mix, then the dynamic range of such a signal is too high and is bad for the mix. I hope this explanation cleared up any confusion.
Not only does your music bang, but your helpful tips and advice are always on point bro. You've helped my mixing elevate beyond what I've ever imagined. Thank you so much man. ✊🏾💪🏾💯
I have the MV2 but I prefer MaxxVolume the expanded non dithered version. Mind you, it takes a lil bit more luv to set it up but as in anything your hard work is rewarded. Great channel not only for the newbs but for the experienced engineer as well
I love this plugin I started using this 3 months ago I didn't understand it it wasn't to many videos but the plugin is so easy to use and simple I just put to and to together and it works perfectly and this video made me realize I was using it right 🙏 you the best can you make a video on what do you use to master songs please
I watch your uploads religiously -- I think I've watched them all actually. Sometimes it takes me months to get around watching some of them though, most times because I feel like I've already studied the subject ad nauseum, but I still click on them and everytime, I end up finding something that quenches my thirst. RUclips's really gone a long way in ten years, and I do hope you keep on putting out such quality materials and insights. That being said, there's one thing I've been constantly wishing while watching you, so I'm putting it here now because I found myself wishing for it again: please, please, crank up your examples. Imo it would really help, not only the total neophytes -- but also the more "seasoned" engineers who've never thought to use upward compression on instruments, for example; and give people the extra incentive to actually *try* something new. Only A/Bing between already "perfect" settings, imo, makes it more difficult for people to see how much of a gem the technique/advice you're giving actually is, and makes it hard for them to conceptualize custom applications derived of it. Of course, not showing up cranked up settings gives me, in some degrees, the impetus to actually try the technique you've shown, or the custom application I see for it; but I'd probably be even more excited if I'd heard more of it from the get. Endword: thank you for all your work!
You can also use upward compression if you’ve got a part that sounds good but has a few out of control peaks. If you turn it down, it’ll get the peaks in line, but during the other sections where the peaks aren’t crazy, it’ll sound too quiet. So instead of limiting it, and chopping off those peaks, you can use upward compression, set the threshold to bring the quiet parts up, and leave the peaks alone.
Thx for this video bro. I have this plugin and never used it because I didn’t quite understand how to manipulate it to my advantage. Now I fully understand it. Great for accentuating nuances. Subscribed a while ago. Thx again. 🔥 music too bruh!!
Hey d I need your help, I bought one of your templates but I don’t have all the plug ins you have so some plug ins don’t off so I was wondering if you can guide me and tell me what plug ins to use? Thanks ✊🏽🙏🏽
It's traditionally called an Expander, I've never heard of it called upward compression before, bit it's a good way to explain it for people who are not familiar with the concept.
@@expertizzlist yes, they are opposite, but what he is describing and using is an expander + compressor. Its an expander for the quite parts and a compressor for the loud parts. Many compressors that are graph based (such as cool edit / adobe audition) use a graph with a zero line diagonally, anything pushed up past it is expand, anything pushed down bellow is conpression.
@@CayenneTravels It's not an expander for the quiet parts, though, because an expander doesn't raise the volume of quieter parts, it lowers them. It expands dynamic range, which is the opposite of compression. Upward compression is more similar to auto gain, but without compressing the louder parts first. 🤓
@@expertizzlist if it just changes the volume, without effecting the curve, but I can see how it could do that. Noise gate, expander and compressor are the same thing (check out a graph-based one where you can do all 3 on the same graph. A noise gate cuts the quiet, an expander boosts, a compressor lowers. All three based on a se threshold and ratio. I tried to draw crude graphs here: Noise gate: / / / __I Expander: _ / / I / Compressor: ___ / / /
I just found out about this technique a few days ago and I've been talking about it, and now Devon just dropped this video. The universe is listening 🤔
Dope video like usual bro! I always appreciate the knowledge. I think this would work great on adlibs and background vocals to make them sound more present even at lower volumes
yaow devon thank you delving in on this topic, i have been avoiding this technique for a while mainly because i thought it was mostly a buss thing or for mastering, but i have since learned that its a BIG industry Secret for pulling up on Sound , totally opposite to the Gate, which acts like weight pulling down on sound.
Bro you are really amazing i watch all your videos everytime and am really waiting for the video on realtime compression on vocals while recording vocals how to do that so that we get a good dynamic vocal recording before even processing vocals later..
Thank you so much for this gem bro!!! Could you also make a video on how to do upward compression with stock plugins in pro tools? Love your videos man. Keep up the great content!
What headphones and studio monitors do you have? Do you mix and master on one pair of headphones and speakers or do you switch between different ones ?
I'm having trouble understanding why Upwards compression is any different than setting make-up gain and extra downwards compression to compensate the boosted highs. Is there even a difference? Or is this just a streamlined way of doing what i described? Thanks
Question, I know you might have discussed this before but I'm new to the channel as I have a lot more time on my hands (make a good thing out of bad). What is that in the back? Is that a vocal booth? thank you in advance!
People in the comments, try this. A good amount of Upward compression (3-10db) + A small amount of downward compression with a fast attack and high ratio (0.5-3db)
Hey Devvon , i really love what you do and how you bring us everything so clairly. But I have a question. Why are you still using oder vst plugins although you already use izotope one , like nectar 3 or neutron ? Thank you for your response to my question 👍
Yo random question, when you used to post cover songs on RUclips, do all the licensing get covered through tunecore or is it a lotta extra hassle? And can I upload that on Spotify and make money legally? Any help will be really helpful!
hi Devon what type of 808 is this . seem common these days. I'm an Ableton user I also have massive and massive x and 808 studio.any presets or sample packs to direct me to would be appreciated.cheers
Brutha. Can I give you a simple suggestion? No Disrespect. Get with a DJ for like 1-2 Hours to specifically discuss tempos and Kick Patterns. If I was to A+R your music...understanding BPM and Kick Drum Patterns would be my #1 concern. I think if you do that...it will make a major impact on your music. Just like you have done for so many others. Peace ✌
but isn't the mv a low-level compressor, which brings the sound up from the floor, upward compression turns sound up instead of turning down, based on the threshold settings and ratio
I found this new plugin in waves called Scheps Omni Channel I want you to go over how to use. It looks like it was made by slate digital and sounds good but I don’t really know how to use it.
i watch YT vids at 2x speed so i chuckled when he said "everything seem too fast" because i really had to slow it down to normal to hear the difference

It's traditionally called an Expander, I've never heard of it called upward compression before, bit it's a good way to explain it for people who are not familiar with the concept.
The reason you never heard it being called that is that it's not the same thing at all. In fact, an expander does the opposite of compress.

Hey bro I think the correct words ur looking for is expander or expansion and can also be achieved with R Comp or with more detail by ProMB.
hey man could you tell us how to do this same thing with R COMP please? tryna save £30 lol
Dope record bro. I can tell you like it a lot by your facial expressions lol. Thanks always 🙏🏼

Love the video fam..how is the power situation going?
Awesome song! I like it. Really cool vibe with the whisper rapping, that’s really interesting. You got a new sub bruh.
Nick K glad to have u aboard!!
Thanks devvon, you are always the best, am from Kenya 🇰🇪🇰🇪🇰🇪
also very awesome on elektronic music on the master. glues everything together a little more.
So should you use upwards and downwards compression so u get balanced vocals
You’re helping a lot. Thanks for your vids
yo I normally dont comment on videos but that song is fire wtf
Nice tutorial as always
Great video and excellent layman's explanation of how an expander can be used. Instant subscribe ✌️🎶🎶
Should I use it on aux channel or use it on main vocal channel ?
Hello Devvon how are you process to master your song ?
Super. Well done as always.
Awesome stuff !!! Definitely Game Changer
does upward compression good for mastering?
Very helpful Devvon. Digging your channel!!
the MV2 is the same as VOCAL RIDER? i know the mv2 compress and the vocal rider is vol but they sound similar, whats better?
Isn’t parallel compression the same ?
What headphones and studio monitors do you have?
Do you mix and master on one pair of headphones and speakers or do you switch between different ones ?
Dope trick Man! Thumbs UP
where should I put a MV2 in the chain ?
