In this video, we talk about six (or more) biggest mistakes people make when mixing vocals. We'll go into how to keep the volume of your vocals even throughout your song with tools and tricks in FL Studio that can help you fix this automatically (or manually).
We'll also go into EQ Tonal Balance (equalization) and how to use it to make sure your vocals blend well with the rest of the music, without losing their natural sound or becoming too thin or too bassy.
We'll share some tips on how to apply compression and reverb the right way so the effects work properly and make your vocals sound awesome.
Also, we'll talk about sidechain compression and how to apply it to make sure your vocals sit nicely in the mix with the rest of your music, don't clash but instead work together to sound like one complete song.

Happy producing!
Max is seriously one the beat mixers I know. The PML tutorials have helped me come a long way in a very short amount of time.
For the patcher vocal rider preset, do you just apply it after recording? Then consolidate and then normalize?
There are a lot of videos out about fl studio
I mean for yrs I have been watching these videos and I think you're one of the best out fr
Number 6 gotta be the most valuable tip, appreciate u brother
Hey Max, just wanted to say thanks for all the amazing tutorials you've provided. You've really helped me improve as a producer 🛐 ! I was wondering if you could do a video on the optimal order of plugin usage during mixing. Your insights would be invaluable 😄! Keep up the fantastic work 💖
This was great dude thanks!
This was super duper helpful, thank you

Kolejny super film!
Sidechain reverb definitely makes a huge difference.
For tip 6 I believe in a previous video you mentioned a patcher preset that does this really well? (Youlean Multiband Sidechain) Or am I missing a subtle nuance in the difference between these techniques?
Thanks for everything you do, your channel has really helped me a ton, especially in vocal production.
This is a pretty well thought out explanation of everything. I’ve watched so many tutorials trying to learn how to mix, and this explained a few concepts in ways that made more sense to me. Thank you!
fr bruh
I couldn't say any better
Love your work
Hi I'm from the mailing list 🤠, I haven't seen the video yet I'll save it for tonight, I'm excited
einfach DANKESCHÖN mann 🧡
I use soothe2 for EQ sidechaining
Thank you very much for one of the best videos on that subject.
Oh MAX you're back!!!
Bro got the gold content 👏🏽🇧🇷❤️
This is fire 🔥
thx for video man
Best video tips fl studio ever ❤
Not gonna lie, I used to use sidechain reverb, but I dislike the way it sounds so these days, I don't bother with it. Instead, I just take some extra time to dial in the settings properly
Maybe your sidechaining reverb too harshly. It's mainly to have things pop out more and give space for whatever the reverb is supporting.
You have to adjust it according to your mix that where you have a reverb that not swallow your vocal.
Same
Just apply eq on reverb side chain
Do you mix with headphones?
Some great ideas! I liked the hip hop vs EDM EQ tips, even though I'm more on the rock side (hey; I like a few Nu Metal bands). I love the explanation of why sometimes you want to back away from the mic as well. Not many people explain how the boominess can interfere with the mix
I agree with over compression. Sometimes what I thought was autotune was over compression. "What the hell? I haven't pitch corrected, so why do I sound autotuned?" It took me a while to figure out it was compression. I also love your explanation of the settings.
The idea of sidechaining using a different compressor is something I would have never thought of. Nice
the phase rotation from EQ (or that causes EQ, rather) is only really an issue at slopes of 18db/octave or higher, using something like a 6db or 12db high pass should not result in any audible phasing issues
pro's don't sit the vocals in the mix, you have to always think ahead if you sit the vocal in the mix during mastering the vocal will be under the mix you should always sit the vocal slightly on top of the mix
Or have fun with volume settings so it makes your vocals stand out
Thank God I've done all of this already.
KEY TAKEAWAYS (AI Summary)
- The first key takeaway is the importance of managing vocal volume throughout a sample, as it can be affected by various factors like the distance between the vocalist and the microphone.
- The second is that applying the wrong EQ curve can distort and negatively affect the vocal mix, so it should be adapted to the type of vocals and the instrumental context.
- The third vital point is avoiding over-compressing vocals, which can result in loss of dynamics and the distortion of quieter parts of the vocal.
- Fourth, it's crucial to properly set up the input volume of vocals before processing to avoid introducing unwanted noise, a concept known as gain staging.
- Lastly, it underscores the importance of making the vocal blend harmoniously with the mix instead of just overlaying it on the instrumental, which can be achieved through techniques like side-chaining.
Max from Mix Elite shares six vocal mixing mistakes that can spoil your mixes. The first error is neglecting the vocal volume throughout the sample, which can be managed manually, or through the use of a vocal Rider plugin. Another common mistake is using the wrong EQ curve on the vocal, which can cut out important frequencies and leave the high frequencies sounding thin. Over compressing the vocals and neglecting the input volume are also key errors that impact the overall sound. The final two mistakes involve not properly managing reverb and not correctly placing vocals in the mix so that they blend with the instrumental.
Thanks for the video and those hints and cues, it's very helpful ! However, I saw on many videos and tutorials that cutting all the lows in vocals can unbalance your final mix, many sound engineers recommand putting a low shelf rather than a HPF. Is anyone doing this ?
I don't understand English well, but these videos explain better than videos in my native language.
Finally makes sense
More vocal mixing tuts 🙏🙏🙏🙌
welcome back Max...I missed you. #NoH0m0
actually i saw the same curve on a Teezio session on Joyner vocals (the one that supposed to be wrong), sometimes if that's what sounds right go for it.... it's a creative choice especially if your room is treated well or if you are used to the sound of your headphones if that's what you use for mixing, and don't forget to get a second opinion from people who actually know what they're talking about, maybe some people won't like your sound but that doesn't mean you change it to please them because not everybody comes from the same musical background but you can find a comfortable place in between.
worst thing about being a freelancer is sometimes, your client has the worst vocal and singing skills you ever heard.
Thanks🙏

How to find the perfect threshold and ratio to compress vocals?
😊 Thanks
omg man this is the first video out of all the videos I've watched for years actually helped, you explain so simple and easy for my brain to actually fucking wrap around, and understand.
atack and release settings for trackspacer at the end?
How can it get your vocal presets
Bro i won't even watch the video. The first harmonic of the "pro" eq was completly outstanding
Good video, I just wish you’d used a better vocal sample, cause this one is absolutely GRATING. Gave me a headache.
Where’s the video for doing the side chain eq for vocals?
It's here: ruclips.net/video/q3EVvhlcCcE/видео.html
@@theMixElite thank you so much!
when i sidechain the reverb, nothing shows up in the "comp" section of the limiter. so i can't alter the ratio and such.
Because you have to set the side chain signal which the compressor uses to be the bus on which the reverb is
My voclas just dont blend with the beat. It feels like the beat is running different and the voclas are floating above the beat and just dont blend with the beat. Any tips?
Reverb, i use two reverbs
@@Heavenly_demon223 intresting. Can you tell me how you use 2 reverbs
@@akshamthakur4689try cutting some lows on the reverb with an eq
It seems like you made this video for me😂😂
I boost at 100hz before low cutting below 120 just to give a touch more fullness to make up for what you have to cut out. Voices are so rich without the instrumental and it's a good compromise to retain some of it
Also, the tip of threshold set to the quietest desired peak db level trick is pretty good
You can tell during the compression bit, the vocalist accidentally said competintors and predintors
Coloca traduções em português irmão, você é foda 👏🏻
Also! If you ever need better vocals to use for an example, tap in!
Compenenors 😂
