@@brandenicole7 I’m at the SAE right now (in Paris) and fully disagree with this comment. This tutorial is just a really quick coverage of just one module. Only practice can do that. To help you with that, the SAE has a lot of computers with Pro Tools, Ableton and Logic Pro in them so you can train on any Apple-compatible DAW. Ive watched alot of tutorials on yt but this is by far the best one ive seen.no nonsense talking and very easy to understand. He would be a great teacher.
Excellent tutorial. Shows you dont need much, you just need the RIGHT things done. I could barely notice some of those first changes he made. He didnt even make any EQ cuts!
Raj Beats yeah this was a great tutorial. I am in the Audio Production degree program at Full Sail University and they are preparing use how to mix and master on the go. With the right software because most of these artists don’t have the budget to lease out a major studio and keep the Engineer inside until he is finished.
Raj Beats Those “cuts” are being done by the multiband compressor. There still is “cuts” in frequency but only when said freq needs it. This way you don’t hear any cutting when it’s not necessary, possibly sucking the life out of the performance. Those first few changes that you barely noticed where some of the most important as it prepared the vocal for the busses comp (rvox). Had he shown the vocals with Rvox but without the multibands, the Rvox would have responded MUCH differently. But yeah, no EQ cutting except on the sub-lows, but I get what you’re saying. Multi band is where it’s at. *apologies if I’m stating the obvious for you..
Except he was doing like 1db of compression on rvox lmao. He was sent an already mixed vocal and just barely put processing on it. That's why you didn't notice the first couple moves. For anyone with a raw recorded vocal with no processing, this mixing isn't going to get them anywhere close.
My guess is the processing you're hearing from the raw vocals is the outboard gear on the way in. What happens when you take care of all those little spikes of frequencies is you'll need significantly less compression on the buss. It's the same concept as stacking compressors so each one is only doing a little bit of work to sound more transparent. In this chain, many of these stacked compressors are just working on specific ranges. That Rvox is actually adding a lot to the vocal, even at a reduction of only several db because of how the vocal was processed leading up to it. As far as not hearing the initial moves, that just comes with time and experience. After a while, you'll be able to pick these out by ear and be in the ballpark when you go to process them. Good luck!
I absolutely love this video. Once I've applied to techniques I can really tell the difference in my music. Making it sound more professional. For once. Yeah I will hear me soon.
Waves are the industry standard plugins. UAD is there but in the most of the studios I have been in - Waves bundles of some sort are there. c6 is a multiband compressor and pro q is a dynamic eq, it's pretty similar but works a bit differently. If you want something like the pro q, Waves has the f6 as well, which is a dynamic eq. check it out.
Nice ... It's basic stuff and not so challenging because the levels of the bacground music are basicaly stagnanting ... The real challenge is when you have up's and down's in levels and you want the vocals going through the mix without going too much "in our out", then you change almost everything in a setting if needed. There's no magic formula but this is nice for the begginers to see how it's done. Great video.
I think these techniques can be used in other genre's also, especially as starting points. I have started using some of these techniques using practice tracks and so far works out great. Its also your ear that helps. Not just the plugins.
i like the fact that hes working his stuff using a full digital interfaced mixboard and tracker, and everything syncs with eachother in terms of technology some of those other enginers on youtube showing mastering with analog boards are missing the point

I saw this tutorial I went to Waves and bought every plug-in mentioned here. They have a discount deal 40% off and if you get $100.00 dollars worth you get two free. I bought five discounted to$150.00 and got two free. I followed every step and I almost cried when I heard the results. Thank you Waves 🌊 this here was dope! Shid I didn’t almost cry 😭 I did 😭 😆
As a mix audio engineer I back this video, very true and very key points featured down to the subtractive eq and vocal treatment pre-compression etc. very good. I wish to see more like this ✊
Can someone tell me what that big ass desk with all the buttons and dials are? Also is it necessary? Do producers actually end up using most of those dials? I'm new to this so it looks like a lot.
Just saw this it's a little late but, it's a mixing board. Traditionally it's used in place of the mixing board in his DAW(digital audio workstation), back when computers weren't used so exclusively. however as you can see, he is using a digital mixing board. You can also use a physical board in conjunction with a digital board, meaning twist a knob on the mixing board and it changes the value of the corresponding knob in your DAW
Lou, every time I watch one of your videos I feel guilty because I know Im in a Master Class and I didn't pay a dime for the million dollar info. Thank you for sharing your wisdom and your gift with us.

5 years of working on waves and some other shitty free plugins and this is pretty much the best session I have ever seen learnt more than 50 times of what I would have learnt by watching something else.. big ups!!
Big Lu can’t wait to talk again! Great work.
I love this this guy explains stuff. This is probably the best tutorial I've ever heard because get gets to the point quickly and effectively. You can also tell he really enjoys teaching with helps to convey the info! FIRE
This was so clutch I had to youtube to mp4 it incase it ever gets taken down lmao LETS GOOO thank u sir
I love this video thanks for the great tips!!!
Dude your the best! You solved a major problem Ive had forever!!! My vocals sound so much more professional now. You're awesome! God bless you!!!
Would be interesting to see the routing behind that vocal chain :)
I love how he paints his picture thru his mix!!
This is the first time I actually learned something that will stick around as a habit even on other genres
At 2:18 he's talking about being able to use C6 to set an "attack and release time just for that *one* frequency" but it's not just *one* frequency he's affecting... it's a whole band of frequencies.
and he didn't adjust any of these bands . But that was probably omitted.
The vocal sounded really good before he did anything to it 🤔 .. the vocas probably been through outboard gear before even reaching the DAW so people with no out board gear or nice mic or good treated room, will have to do more to get it to sound good
Yep. Like what a dope mic preamp alone will do...
Guys just focus on treatment of your room. THAT will pay off. Analog gear in a bad room is useless
Mosco Enterprise from my experience the room don’t matter that much to be honest. I mean look at where some of these new artists be recording 😂 hotels and all sorts of bed rooms
SAINT BROS i was making that comment to show the right way to beginners and amateurs as a professional engineer who worked with guys like Young Thug, Gunna and other ppl you might know) and i shared the comment to stop the spread of BS misinformation that i see day in and day out on the internet. And i do that on our ig page as well. If anyone is curious to see our credits - our page on instagram is mosco.enterprise
That's what I thought!
Best mixing video I have ever seen.. keep it up waves yall doing the most man!!!!
The best part is “ that’s how you do it “ in the end 🔥 thank you 🙏
I think fabfilter pro q 3 does some sort of a similar version of what c6 does with the dynamic option
c6 is a multiband compressor and pro q is a dynamic eq, it's pretty similar but works a bit differently. If you want something like the pro q, Waves has the f6 as well, which is a dynamic eq. check it out.
10:20 when he said "the word .. we litty" had me going 😅
LOL basic stuff??? that's an ignorant comment you made.
don't forget this is an ad, you don't have to use any of the exact plugins
I bought some of the plugins used in the video
Idk about you but waves have just about the best plugins you can get except for slate digital
Nobody realizes that the built in stuff already does every exact thing all 3rd party plugins do. The software already comes with everything you need.
OH GE but it don’t sound like this or maybe the setting or not right
Noob question, what pro tools plugin should you use to get similar results?
I think these techniques can be used in other genre's also, especially as starting points. I have started using some of these techniques using practice tracks and so far works out great. Its also your ear that helps. Not just the plugins.
i wish dude mixed the vocals for this video. some frequencies really standing out.
Daniel Navejas i thought i was he only one who noticed that. It’s sonically weird to hear the mix getting better and the talking to remain horrible.
@@PastorChelsey yea i was looking for my eq knobs the whole time lol
Download the video from yt and do it yourself
@esteve st ???????
@esteve st Dfuck xD
He's so direct to the point and so focused. I really like it. 👍🏼 💯
R vox is lit
i like the fact that hes working his stuff using a full digital interfaced mixboard and tracker,
and everything syncs with eachother in terms of technology
some of those other enginers on youtube showing mastering with analog boards are missing the point
Man this tutorial right here solidified my sound. I was ripping out my hair trying to find out what was wrong I prayed to God. Shid I didn’t almost cry 😭 I did 😭 😆
Nice promo
Everything just made so much sense in my head after watching this.
Lu Diaz is the G.O.A.T.
I thought goats are goats....lol
Ave Mcree 305 legend
Craftmaster Productions for real!
Everybody is
As a mix audio engineer I back this video, very true and very key points featured down to the subtractive eq and vocal treatment pre-compression etc. very good. I wish to see more like this ✊
Do you have a video based on mixing hip hop beat stems? Thanks for this video btw, helped a lot 🙏🏽
The feeling of coming back to this video 8 months later and it finally makes sense and you apply it and it works 🔥🔥🔥🔥 man finally!!!!!!
Wow I have to meet this guy !!! Great work
Finally.a video of a producer doing real work.
Thank you for sharing your knowledge and expertise!!! I know I have a lot to learn and Im always going to start with this video.
1 AUTOTUNE
2 LOTS OF REVERBS
3 COMPRESSION
4 DISCARD THE VOCALS AND START ALL OVER
Mixey crying
Lmfao truly
Lou, every time I watch one of your videos I feel guilty because I know Im in a Master Class and I didn't pay a dime for the million dollar info. Thank you for sharing your wisdom and your gift with us.
He makes everything sound like common sense. I love listening to him.
God bless this man, you are a legend. This Rules has really opened my eyes
uploaded for 3 hours and 6000 views already, I can see how many people are making hiphop music
Its the biggest genre in the world.
isn't only the people that are making hip-hop, if you listen to hip hop this video probably will appear on ya recommended.
It’s a culture.
that's true
I don’t make hip hop but I’m still here
I'm very greatful for this tutorial. This has been a problem area for me, as a new engineer. This shed alot of light on what to look for when mixing. Thank u guys immensely. I honestly can't put my gratitude into words right now!!
"Listen for what´s bothering me on the vocals". Mumble rap! Press "mute". Mix done! :D
😂 😂 😂
Poggers
this wasn't mumble rap though
Nerd
Looking up Mr. Diaz discography and listen this man is a genius IMHO
nice tutorial, nice guy
Man this takes me back to class @ Full Sail University. Learning how to use everything INCLUDING that beautiful console.
I plan on going very soon
0:45
4:58
6:27
8:25
That's great stuff. It would be great if he showed us how it sounds when bypassing all the correction before the Rvox and coloring EQ
would his plugins be in mono or stereo if he's working with the vocals, I assume mono? apart from the adlibs which he said would be panned
mono
This guy is a master so much experience and hes so relaxed about it damn
tons of good tips
Lu Diaz, what a concise and factual teacher. Amazing video Waves. Thanks to both of you.
Thank you for all the tips...
This man needs his own show
I will use these tipps for my next mix! Thanks ;) keep going with that good stuff
I second that
How did it work out y'all?
