I've intermittent fasted for the past year. I have lost 100 pounds. Almost limitless energy. No need for anti depressants. Healthiest and happiest I've ever been. I'm 45 years old and in the shape of my life. Massive mental clarity. I have even subsided some of my health problems. I have reversed the aging process. Fountain of youth here folks. I look 10 years younger! So happy. All I can do is smile and dance.
Totally concur…65 years old…and look 10 years younger…im active, physically and cognitively and feel wonderful…I practice fasting variability…18, 20, 24, 36, 48, 72…fast, feast repeat…predominantly plantbased…sort of Mediterranean
Edith Emerson try the whole body vibration plate. Got mine on Amazon. Helps with bone density, increase muscle tone, & lymphatic drainage. I just sit and stand. Takes a month to notice a difference. 10 mins stand, 10 mins sit (hold on to machine).
Ted Talks can be ego platforms on pointless issues but this man really convinces in a mild and intelligent tone. Wonderful lecture. Thank you Mr Mattson.
I have found some of the best content on the Internet that I've seen on TED talks, but I still know what mean. A load of inane fluff gets through too. Not that all of that is even without entertainment but there's a lot to sort through at this point.
I confess that my hand had started to shake in the past. I tried to deny it. I used to fast a lot, somehow I stopped. I started to fast this year, plus getting rid of sugar and the shaking is gone.Aleluyah
My biology professor fast for 3 days, I do not agree. He looks weak in my opinion and nutrient deficient similar to this guy on Ted talk. The problems with American diet is eating excessively. If eating in smaller portion 3 times of the day and exercise would be healthier in the long term. We can fast occasionally.
Eating healthfully most of the time makes fasting some of the time SUPER much Easier in my experience. My theory is that when the body is properly nourished, it doesn't freak out when denied calories. I feel the hunger at meal times, but it passes quickly.
@@ariellws Three days zero calories can upset our electrolytic balance. If it gets too far out of whack we die. It's usually recommended to have medical supervision to go over 48 hours.
Just wowed.!!! Thank you Doctor Mattson. I'm 60 years old and I have abs, lol. I've been fasting, and during that time, I swim, cycle, spend an hour or two in the gym and it's all paying off. A true lifestyle change, you're preaching the gospel. I went in for my annual physical and my Doctor didn't recognize me in the lobby. All of my numbers, blood pressure, cholesterol, A!C etc. are great. Sharing, and subscribed.
I have got into a weekly routine of fasting, last meal Sunday dinner until Monday dinner, only water for 23 hrs, I feel great and recommend it. I also take a cold shower for 30 seconds after a 3 minute hot one, it's so invigorating even in the depths of winter and people say I'm looking younger. I'm 82.
I fasted for 5 days drinking only warm water 10 years ago and felt that my brain started working much more clearly. I became also very sensitive, my intuition got incredibly strong.
***** I have a tendency to iron deficiency so I had to eat after five days of fast and I also read that it is better to try and get vitamins and minerals every day with fruits and vegs. Some doctors recommend a fast only when the body refuses food as during an illness. However, I know since that experience that fast is a powerful thing.
***** ya i tried to fast for more than 24 hours the first few went well then i got a little dizzy and felt super weak but at first my brain did feel like it was working better, also participated in ramadan and the first 2 weeks i had like super ninja focus
Ali -V According to some experts, during a fast a lot of proteins and bad substances stored in our body are released from our cells and this is not so good if it is done without cleaning the colon and the intestine with enemas. This is why some people might feel a bit bad at first.
+Sandra Carli I don't know if it's coincidental or not, but I did notice in the most recent semester of classes that I was very alert, and very sharp. It was as if witty or insightful responses were always right on the tip of my tongue, waiting to be used. I also noticed a sense of enhanced intuition as you noted, as if I could anticipate a professors question or statement, and formulate a response well in advance. And I wonder if this is due to the fact that I was unintentionally subjecting myself to a form of quasi-ketogenic diet. Certain circumstances basically led my diet to be as such: Wake up 7:30-8, go get a large peanut butter infused coffee--cream only, no added sugar--, and go directly to classes until roughly 2pm. Which is far different than my typical morning routine which is to wake up and immediately consume a substantial (although relatively well balanced) meal.My schedule this semester will allow me to do the quasi-Keto diet three days a week, and give me time to do my typical routine the other two. I look forward to examining the side-by-side comparison! :)
Hi. I'm a Buddhist priest. Thank you for this video. I can personally say that intermittent fasting has always been part of our human nature. Have you ever noticed that when you got the flu, you barely want to eat? That's your body screaming you to leave it alone so it can heal! So why is it that you force yourself into having a bowl of chili or soup? Fasting heals you. Make you feel great and the mind is sharp and clear. Most of the Buddhist monastic community worldwide have only 2 small meals a day and this has been going on for thousands of years. So try skipping breakfast. That's all you need to lose weight, lower your carbon imprint and feel great.
Hi, I see you have left your comment here from 2 months ago. Can you share with me how you fast? such as the duration of fasting etc. Also do you usually drink water while fasting?
Tabloharuxx Hi! I fast daily by skipping dinner and once or twice a month I do a 24 hours fasting. It's really simple, actually. I drink water and a little coffee or tea. The first couple of days are hard, but once you start feeling great, you fall in love with fasting. Other benefit is that you get less hungry on your food days, so you lose weight nice and steady. Try it!
I skip breakfast now everyday. I have a hearty salad with some form of protein for lunch and then whatever I like for dinner. I started this for weight loss reasons but I am now so productive during the day and much less easily distracted.
Very interesting point about trying to force feed your body when sick. I do believe in force feeding it water when you are sick because having those stomach convulsions because you have nothing to throw up isn't fun at all, but next time I'll try not eating when I'm not hungry.
Tabloharuxx eat only one meal a day and have 2-3 apple or banana or any such fruits and drink milk eat little bit of nuts, I don't have breakfast in lunch I eat 20-30 grams of nuts (almonds and walnuts mostly) and one apple or banana, I have dinner at 8:30 pm I am indian so I have vegetarian meal cottages cheese, roti, lentil soup, little salad, butter milk etc. I don't drink or smoke Once a week I have my cheat day,I don't like sugary things I love burgers etc. I am topper of my class always a straight A student 😀
Intermittent fasting and keto saved my life. I couldn't even go a couple of hours without needing to eat and was a sugar addict. Lost weight, health issues disappeared (big ones). Absolutely saved me.
Outstanding! I have been doing intermittent fasting for nearly three weeks and I am burning fat like never before, my former colitis and bloating have almost dissapeared, joint pain has reduced and I do have increased mental clarity in the mornings. I strongly recommend it. I loved the attack against the food and pharmaceutical industries!

Guys, Here is The Savior YaH The Heavenly FATHER (Genesis 1) HIMSELF was Who they Crucified/Pierced for our sins and “HERE IS THE PROOF” From the Ancient Semitic: "Yad He Vav He" is what Moshe (Moses) wrote, when Moses asked YaH His Name (Exodus 3) Ancient Semitic Direct Translation Yad - "Behold The Hand" He - "Behold the Breath" Vav - "Behold The NAIL"
Great video. Thank you sir :). I’ve done the 16/8 fasting and lost 40 pounds in like 4 months, but that didn’t work great for me because I could still not control my hunger, I just couldn’t wait to finish my diet so I can eat bread, cake again. I’m just hungry all the time. A year later I’ve decided to increase my fasting period. For 1.5 months now, I’ve been fasting 36 hours 3 days a week (I don’t eat Monday, Wednesday and Friday). And I feel amazing. My hunger is way way way way down, I can actually manager those urges to eat all the time, I have much more energy, and I feel like my thinking is clear . The hunger still comes in waves, but if I can keep busy for 20-30 min, it just goes away(and is very mild), and I still cook everyday for my husband and son. The only problem now, is that I’m bored, because all that time I used to think about food, now suddenly I have to fill it up with something else... and I lost another 15 pounds... but my greatest achievement of all, is NOT BEING HUNGRY ALL THE TIME
I find that eating grass fed beef, (think fatty rib eye cooked med at most) good quality egg yolks (raw or) and throw in some bacon and a little cheese very satiating for long periods of time. (Former vegan turned carnivore) add intermittent fasting! Good to go!
Thanks, Mark for a great talk; you have given me a lot of insights into my current fasting journey. I am 75, and I have had 2 strokes and 3 heart stints. In the last 22 months I have lost ~30 pounds; am no longer pre-diabetic (A1C was 6.0; now 5.5); reduced acid reflux by 95%; reduced blood pressure meds by 75%; ended Celebrex for arthritis pain in knees and hips; have seen increased cognition - a significant increase in typing speed; more bruise resistant than in the past and my skin is less dry and chapped. I have not felt this good in years - fasting is a miracle.
You still kicking? I'm 58 and better that I was just 10 years ago. But no one else wants to actually eat healthy. Making younger friends is an good thing for those who age well.
SUMMARY: hungry animals due to fasting or exercise get smarter to look for food. Physical and psychological challenges stimulates the production of "neurotrophic factors" (which helps with the production of new neurons, etc.)
You've summarised one of the benefits but it also reduces inflammation too, which can help people with all kinds of medical conditions. Fasting has also been proven to increase longevity in mice considerably. Maybe next time you want appear to be a smart arse do it properly?
Thanks for the summary. I often feel like authors and speakers waste my time by not being concise enough. I'd like to see a new way of relaying information in top down structure with a short summary on the top and then optional information in layers from the top and all the way to bottom (sites and books sometimes approach this, but inconsistently and haphazardly). That way anyone can get what they want and need rather than having a one-size fits all.
jayaybe1 I do not know why you seem to be so angry/affected by my "summary" of a long video LOL. I always hope to do good things in life for others (including in youtube). It is not necessary to be so negative to somebody you do not even know. Breath and smile friend 😊🌻, life continues.
Fasting is incredible, the benefits you get from it are borderline super-powers. They've been shoving the lie that we need 3 meals a day down our throats (literally) for years. Too much food makes you fat, lethargic, toxic, depressed, dishonest, poor and I can go on and on. The hardest thing about fasting is the fear and the withdrawal from addiction to food that you will inevitably go through at first.
Unrefined Carbohydrates Are the Problem, these raise your insulin. Fat and Cholesterol are not the problem ! Sugar is the Problem that is why your body secretes insulin when your blood sugar becomes too high. Eating healthy fat does not raise your insulin. See this link : www.dietdoctor.com/?s=fat+does+not+raise+your+insulin
I fasted for 6 days and 3 hours and the result was incredible,i became more sensitive to smell and i experience great mental clarity .Life became so easy, things start working better for me,i understand coding syntax more faster .my brain begin to function perfectly as if all the cobweb surrounding it are removed...I must confess that fasting is a powerful tool both physically and mentally. And another extra benefit is that i lost 5kg.
I am a Muslim , I started fasting from the age of 8, at the age of 14 I was fasting for the whole month of Ramadhan, , I am past 70 , and I continue to fast through the whole mont of Ramadhan , always felt great ,
my friend at work is muslim, and he is doing this now, and tired a lot. I have a grandmother that's 96, eats very little, and is sharp as a tac, she says "I don't need that much"
This guy is totally spot on! I started intermittent fasting 9 months ago and took a slow, easy and gradual approach making things as comfortable and natural as possible. I have since lost 100 pounds and I fast approximately 18 hours every day without any struggle whatsoever. Combine this with cutting sugar, carbohydrates and increasing vitamins and minerals, a lot of good things happen!
Bro, you explained correctly what I did in the last few months. Leaving the 100 pound loss, I did everything you mentioned here and have also reaped similar and great benifits from it. Including:- Better sleep, better mood, lost craving for sugary food.
+Lozie82 body has his priorities, first water then sleep then food, body will make you think about what he need the most leaving other needs in off mode
I've used fasting to rid myself of 70 pounds and three "incurable" autoimmune diseases. I hope fasting is one day embraced as a mainstream solution for autoimmune diseases rather than the palliative drugs pushed by the medical establishment. August 2021 update. I successfully lost 100 lb and arrested for autoimmune diseases as long as I continue in My fasting lifestyle they have not returned. I've been in maintenance of the weight loss now for 2 years. Thank God for fasting. Clearly it does not have the flaws of man-made diets.
Since I began eating once a day, low carb and no sugar, my mood cleared up completely, my thinking is sharp, my tiredness is gone, in all aspects splendid energy levels; now my question is this: why must I have to be 55 years of age to learn this, and in a way which seems totally coincidentally - by coming across RUclips videos? This way of eating and the physical and emotional benefits connected to it, must be taught on a much wider scale on society level.
I have borderline personality disorder, and I've been doing a low-carb diet and intermittent fasting, has worked wonderfully for me, I been sleeping better (6-8 hours which is alot for a border) , I have less mood swings, and although I know that this will not solve my life 100% at least has helped me alot, i decided to start this diet after i read that it was good for epileptics and schizophrenics , i was taking same medication, anticonvulsants and antipsychotics, so i told myself "why not?" and i don´t regret :D Sorry about my english
+Lana de Ville Be sure to not go TOO low carb. If you dip too low, you will eventually mess with your endocrine system (i.e. disturbed sleep, decreased metabolism, etc). So do include healthy carbs in your diet regularly (e.g. sweet potatoes, beans, etc). No need to take it to the extremity that is ketosis. Best of luck.
+Lana de Ville Best approach with carbs is to have them as a treat at the end of the meal, not as a snack or bulk of your food. Also you could try eating some sardines a few times a week. Vitamin D helps a lot with the mood swings but it may take a few months to have an effect.(all advice from personal experience)
+Lana de Ville Gluten free may also help also. Read the book "Wheat Belly" .. this with fasting will be great for you. For instance, during WWII there were food shortages and a lot of disease actually declined. When life went back to normal and it even got better after the war that illnesses came back all the more.
Great presentation! Fasting boosts clarity of mind and makes you so much more fasted. Whenever I go on a 3 or 4 day fast, skipping breakfast and lunch, I feel so much better overall, though the first day is tough due to the hunger. You gotta stick with it for a few days, then you'll feel better. It helps by resetting your hunger levels.
I do believe there is something to this. I had some health issues a while that made me lose apetite so I started eating only 1 or 2 meals per day. I got so used to it so even today I only eat a meal at around 5 pm and possible a snack a couple of hours later. Not every day but I do feel a lot healthier compared to when I ate 3 meals plus snacks, like we have all been indoctrinated to do since childhood.
I started doing intermittent fasting now for a little over two weeks fasting on average 20hours daily. and I love it, I have a lot of energy, and mental clarity and the ability to focus for long periods of time. it's the best thing I've ever tried from a physical health perspective. Thank you for the work that you do Mark.
This is so true since I have been intermittent fasting I feel so mentally sharp and can remember things more. I’m 46 and it’s my number one strategy for good health
For starters try: 18:6 Intermittent fasting.....(don't eat after 6pm or before 12pm next day = 18 hour fast) Your eat window is from 12pm-6pm (6 hours) .... periodically do a 24 hr fast (lunch one day no eating until lunch next day (24 hour fast). Your HGH will increase, you will lose weight and your blood glucose, cholesterol, triglyceride levels will improve.
+plockacherrys "lean gains" is one of many timing of "when to eat" protocols...I just notice that, for me, if I skip breakfast I continue to not be hungry until early afternoon and often eat small lunches. Started Expt in Aug 15 ... three months later my A1C down to normal and lipid panel is good on all behchmarks. Plus I have lost 24 lbs. I am a fan of any IF eat schedule protocol that is evidence based.
+poosta7 im happy to hear i have been to doing IF for 3 years now and im more than happy. more energy and more happy overall :) okay but not the first 3 weeks(i was grumpy the first weeks of IF)
+poosta7 When you do the 24-hour fast from 12noon to 12noon, are you able to sleep that night? Could we do something like 6pm to 6pm instead? I can't fall asleep if I'm hungry. Thanks :)
I have fasted intermittently since Jan. 2016. I've noticed a big difference in my thinking ability. Faster recuperation from a hangover. Better sleep. Better mood. More energy. And I have lost 40 lbs. I started out fasting Monday, Wednesday, Friday. And eating one big meal, meaning anything I wanted and as much as I wanted on the other days. Also having wine most days! I have kept the weight off, today is Nov. 28, 2016. 8 months. I can tell my brain functions better. I now have one meal or less a day eating whatever I want including ice cream etc. I am so grateful for your research Mark Mattson!
Excellent talk. I strongly favor our public tax dollars going to support the salary and work of researchers like Dr Mattson. I'd like to increase the NIH budget instead of always increasing the military budget.
@@NikoHL doesnt work this way. If you do that, they will invent a new war and ask for even more money :). Oops. Already happening...(post from 2022 , february )
Intermittent fasting is the best thing I've been doing in a while. I have less fat, same amount of muscle, more stable blood sugar and am way happier and energetic. Everybody should at least try it for several months.
I've been intermittent fasting for 19 weeks and I'm down 25 lbs. I don't even work out. I started at 302 lbs and I'm so happy I found Dr Jason Fung and started doing this.
I believe in everything Mark says here. Ive been doing intermittent fasting (only eat from Noon-8pm) for 4 months and I feel leaner, sharper, and more energetic. It works
Great talk. I discovered fasting pretty much on my own when I was a kid. Always had a problem with the 4-meals-a-day program... I would think, "what's the point of eating when you're not hungry or waiting to whatever hour to eat if you're hungry now?" People is just too absorved in the psycohological structures of the dominant consumerist culture. As Mattson said in the talk, at first it is painful and difficult, because it's hard to break the daily 4-meals program, but once you get used to it, you feel it just makes sense.
kasih sayang prayer should be a private ceremony ..we should be able to pray aloud or in silence...conversations of the heart is fine when ur privacy is not invaded by a nation ..some point laugh and judge u god know when can only grow when we come out from the world .. seek him Greving time is a yr or more.. long suffering is a fruit that people judge and call u crazy ..Jesus said father why have they forsaken me .. forgiveness is for u not the person who hurt u .. but the word says to pray for those .. this thing doesn’t happen overnight.. it is a daily struggle the flesh is weak and getting tried everyday in many way .. we fall down we get up even in the fire their is transforming of the old becoming new .. we should always never cease to keep our temple clean .. slowly but surely set goal to just stop can throw ur system into shock .. u must taper down .. then stop .. not in perfect time but in u and gods time.. he knows and he cares.. where ever u are in ur life is not a mistake.. we learn to come to acceptance... the fact is u never get over losing someone u love ..

I love it and from now on will start eating only 8 hours a day and 16 hours fasting. I have decided to finish my dinner at 4 PM and have breakfast at 8AM next morning.
I’ve just stumbled upon fasting and I’m fascinated by it. I’m always very in tune with my moods and my energy levels and I’m very aware of how I feel. I always eat healthy and exercise everyday and have a relatively physical job in which I’m on my feet for 8 hours, I tried fasting expecting to ‘crash’ about the same times in which I usually would when my body starts running out of energy but my how I was wrong, I feel consistently better throughout the day and don’t feel the same emotional pulls towards food. Try it!
TED talks are amazing. Information flowing straight from research labs to the public, kind of like intersection of science and public thirst for knowledge. Thanks TED for being the platform you are. This talk is an eye opener. Although I have been aware of the benefits of fasting to some extent, this talk drives home the point convincingly. I wish there were ads/campaigns on TV and internet urging people to adopt healthy lifestyle habits like intermittent fasting and exercising and meditation to balance against the blatant campaigns for consumerism all the time.
I used to fast 24-36 hours once a week, I fasted once for 4 days and only drank water. I experienced extreme energy and euphoria as if I was on Adderall. I really need to start fasting again.
Wow! This was 7 years ago. I wish I'd known this before. I just started fasting (Keto-IF-extended fast, four mouths ago). I lost 40 pounds. No exercise. I feel great. The last time I was at this weight was decades ago. If you want an updated take on Keto/Low carb and fasting, watch Sten Ekberg's videos. You need 3-5 days for autophagy. According to Ekberg, you also produce HGH. 3 days of water fasting is now easy to do for me. I am trying to do a 4-5 days fast once a month. The rest of the days, I do IF. Btw, i also minimized carbs and removed processed food from my meal plan. It also saves you a lot of money.
He presented a lot of useful information and gets right to the point. He is not the most engaging speaker, but if you look beyond that, he makes it easy to understand why fasting is beneficial to your health.
Whenever I ate less or fasted in the past, I always felt sharper, with better cognition, but I´ve never succesfully maintained the habit due to social conditioning and peer pressure. This talk has hopefully inspired me to take my diet by the horns and bulldoze through social norms. I truly expect this to transform my life.
Fasting is the best thing you can gift to yourself. Come on everyone. First time in my life in 2020 at 62, I have water fasted for 3 days. Then in the same year I have water fasted for 10 days. Total 13 days water fasting in 2020. In 2021 in Feb I have water fasted for 16 days. Then in Nov water fasted for 3 days. Now on Christmas day I have started 3 day water fasting. Today 12/27/21 I will be finishing my fast. Total 22 days water fasting in 2021. I feel wonderful.
So true...I just wanted to shed a few lbs for a camera shoot and found that my thoughts, memory and fitness greatly enhanced by doing a water fast. Thanks for this message that confirms my experience.
Thank you Mark for dedicating your life to this area. I believe if my Mother had seen this talk she may have reversed her dementia and extended her life. I have started fasting during the 4 months 8/16 everyday and then pushing it to 6/18 occasionally and I've seen a significant improvement in my ability to sleep and weight loss. It does take practice but I convinced that this is the way forward to reduce food related diseases.
I've intermittent Fasted for the last 6 straight months. I began @ around 235 lbs around 19% bf. Now I dwell around 195 lbs around 12-14% bf. I started off doing 23:1 for about 3 months. I shifted into 20:4 for a couple of months, and I have been into 16:8 ever since. I also did all of this while Boxing and strength training. It was the mental clarity, digestive benefits, and the release from the "bodybuilding" dogma of 5-6 meals per day that kept me going @ first. Now it's part of my lifestyle and it just feels natural. I just want to encourage everyone who has thought about doing IF, but has been too afraid physically or emotionally due to some ridicule that may come from nay-sayers! Try it for yourself and remember that we are to eat to live and not just live to eat. It works! The data from the science speaks for itself.
I have been fasting for around 10 years. I feel full of energy when fasting, alert, at peace, light, less stressed. Fasting, Intermittent 5/2, Periodic 16/8, 16/800 calories, delayed eating 16 hr fast daily, all contribute to good health. I believe fasting is the way forward to maintain, capture, enhance good health. We have no other option because we have had excess. Fasting lowers blood pressure, lowers cholesterol, creates new neurons in the brain, lowers IGF1 (insulin growthlike factor 1) which we need when growing but not as adults, high levels cause disease like cancer. Increases HGH (human growth hormone) required for repair and to maintain good health. When fasting the body repairs itself 100% and keeps inflammation very low so people don't get Auto-Immune diseases, where the body attacks itself and makes people sick. What is not to like? Enjoy!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
A small percentage of the population will deny themselves food in a culture of excess. I recently did a 6 day fast. It was empowering and freeing. I'm a 10 year vegan and often skip eating for a day or so and have for years. I recommend people ease into a fast with a clean vegan diet for a couple weeks before fasting to be most successful. The first 3 days are the most difficult after is bliss. (BTW, I'm no kid . . . 60 years old).
I too have fasted for 6 days; for those who are curious, it's quite a high in that all of your senses become heightened and you reach a state of clarity. You are not hungry after 6 days (is true) and by day 5 or 6, you no longer want to "dirty yourself" by eating again (altho you will by breaking the fast properly). I followed a book by Paavo Airola.
Great to see another vegan do the fasting :) Why don't you continue with IF, it is less hard and can be maintained for years every day. It has long term benefits.
I eat a moderately high fat vegetarian diet (about 40% fat). I've started dabbling in intermittent fasting. I love it. But I haven't gone multiple days or anything. The furthest I've gone is miss breakfast and lunch and then workout with weights and running. I think I'm pretty "fat adapted" because that was easy. Frighteningly easy. I still wasn't hungry. I just ate something because I thought it would be a good idea after working out. But I felt I could have gone for days. It's pretty strange.
Great information. Good way to end it. You are correct, you do end up being more productive on the days you skip a few meals. THANKS! I'm about to do a 72hr cold pressed juice fast. Fasting also starves parasites.
Thank you, Mr. Mattson. This lecture/lesson has helped me understand intermittent fasting and also helped me increase my dedication to this lifestyle. I currently am trying to stick to intermittent fasting, I find it difficult to not grab a low carb snack in the morning (eggs or bacon, usually). I think that listening to you has helped my resolve.
Super fascinating. The posts made about the personality disorders and depression were equally fascinating and it does make sense that the food now a days MIGHT have something to do with these mental health issues. Super Awesome. So glad I came across this video.
I'm so glad this came up in my feed. Very worthwhile talk! I really like the quote Mark Matteson gives at the beginning:. I'm going to look for other videos by him. I'm currently following Dr. Eric Berg who makes Keto so easy in short illustrated educational videos. He and his wife Karen also share some amazing recipes! My health has improved dramatically!
I like the way you speak. I have begun intermittent fasting and have felt better than I have in years. There is a lot of good scientific info on this on RUclips. Thank you for your work in this area of study and for presenting this material. Very nice that you passed on the joy of running to your son.
Thank you, it's great to see the science. I just finished a 7-day water, 3-day broth fast. Everyone I told was very very concerned that I was harming my health. But I know better. I feel great!!! Please keep courageously getting the word out.
I just today finished a four day fast and have never gone this long without food and also, have not felt so good in many years. BTW, I am an epileptic and have noticed a noted decrease in my seizure disorder. This guy couldn't be more right about this topic.
I fast for 25 years, since I was 8 yo, just because I didn’t have hungry in the mornings. I swear to you, I have 33 years and I went to the hospital only 2 or 3 times in my entire life just because my bronchitis. All my exams always showed good health conditions. If you want to improve your health, try intermitent fasting and low carb diet, it is amazing for health!
Dear Dr., Your speech today was the first i have ever heard that confirmed my own beliefs that fasting is indeed a remade for cognitive efficiency. And i can't stop smiling because it is a deeply wonderful experience to discover that one is correct & supported by facts. I fast every other day, drinking only water & or freshly squeezed fruits & vegetables. Thank you so very much for taking the time to share your findings with the public. Respectfully yours.
I read several comments about not skippinng breakfast. I honestly think that I am living proof that breakfast is not required for a healthy physique and lifestyle. I eat everything for the day in about an 8hr time period: a small lunch (very small) and whatever I want for dinner (mostly whole foods, plant-based, vegan.) I feel great, work all day, paint, write, exercise, read, and get 9 hrs (too much??) of sleep everyday ... I really hate breakfast.
Excellent information! Started after I gained additional weight. Lost 20 lbs. returned from vacation and had actually lost weight for the first time. Incorporated it into my daily routine. You can do it with planning. You have to be intentional about it. There's got to be a "want-to" on your part but it will be so beneficial.
Islamic fasting is different from intermittent fasting though. You can drink water/coffee(no sugar) in intermittent fasting which can help us to fast for longer times, while Islamic fasting is a fast that takes from the sun rise to sundown without eating anything.
Well, I have my own version to explain the benefits of fasting but I strongly agree with the topic at hand.. It is indeed very significant if one wants to live longer with healthier cognitive faculties.. Brilliant and practical speaker... a real and valiant scientist.. I salute you!!! God bless..
I'm older now, but, I still fast. Not strictly, maybe a small smoothie, instead of nothing. Sometimes nothing. I haven't been to a doctor in 24+ years and I'm Canadian, I can go to a doctor, 24/7 for free. I know this will sound off...but, the morning after a day of fasting, I FEEL VERY STEADY. I feel alert. Better than usual & I eat carefully. I don't eat bread because I never liked it, even as a child, & my rare blood type forbids alcohol. I was a professional athlete, but, that has nothing to do with anything, as people point at my riding. No! It is because I eat just the correct small amount.
I've had been doing 16:8 intermittent fasting and the occasional 20:4/OMAD (one meal a day) fast for a couple months in conjunction with a low carbohydrate diet. Was feeling really great, the best I've felt in years really. However, the last 2-3 weeks I slipped completely and started eating chocolate and snacks again... biscuits are the devils food I swear. Since then my productivity has dropped off a cliff, I'm feel lethargic, my short term memory recall isn't as good and the early signs of my previous depressive episodes are creeping back in. My family have noted a drastic change in my attitudes and it's almost entirely because of what I'm eating. Something dramatic needs to change in terms of advertising and societal pressures to buy/eat food every couple hours or less. We're eating ourselves into an obesity time bomb, with the issues of cardiovascular disease/acute coronary syndrome and diabetes putting incredible pressures on our health services. Not to mention the lives that are being ruined by these conditions on the count of profits for these massive corporations. If they lobbied and advertised for public health with the same vigor as they do their breakfast cereals we'd be living in a far better and healthier society. My biggest tip would be don't have breakfast in the momrning, "it's the most important meal of the day" they tell you. It's all rubbish. Stop eating at about 6-7pm the evening before and break your fast at 11am or midday, with no snacks in between. Trust me you'll feel the results not just mentally but on your waist line too. I lost 20lb in weight in a little over six weeks just by skipping breakfast, eating less processed carbohydtrates (bread, pasta) but eating natural foods higher in fibre and lots of protein. Proteins and dietary fats result in less severe insulin spikes compared to carbs and keep you feeling full for longer. Read up about the hormones leptin and ghrelin, which regulate your sensations of hunger and fullness after meals, it's interesting and makes you feel less bad about yourself for constantly snacking when you eat a high carb/sugar diet.
I once went a whole week only drinking water. I lost a lot of weight and felt pretty good afterwards. I really strengthens the willpower. I don't think I will do it again though. The first few days were rough. I had to sleep through them to ignore the cravings.
You could go on a Ketogenic (HFLC or Atkins) diet for 3 or 4 days to enter ketosis first. Then when you switch over to fasting you will already be in ketosis & won't suffer as much.
starelative I went 40 days just drinking coconut water. Although I would probably not recommend this to anyone especially without special supervision... but it was pretty intense and eventually i stopped sleeping and ended up going on crazy out of body experiences and had really powerful vision and spirit encounters.
Very happy for you! Accept Jesus into your life if you haven't for your spiritual nutrition! ❤

This why muslims fasting one month every year
Eating healthfully most of the time makes fasting some of the time SUPER much Easier in my experience. My theory is that when the body is properly nourished, it doesn't freak out when denied calories. I feel the hunger at meal times, but it passes quickly.

I don't drink or smoke
Once a week I have my cheat day,I don't like sugary things I love burgers etc.
I am topper of my class always a straight A student 😀
Intermittent fasting and keto saved my life. I couldn't even go a couple of hours without needing to eat and was a sugar addict. Lost weight, health issues disappeared (big ones). Absolutely saved me.

Good to go!
When I eat enough during my feed window, I find I'm not hungry during my fasting window. All the same benefits, but not hungry.
That's great stuff. Question,
What do you after the 36 hour fast?
hunger... always the hunger... did you try low carb diet to control this monster?

+jayaybe1 thanks for your collaboration, it is always good to serve our youtube community.
***** It's NOT a "summary" if major points have been completely ignored. She was trying to be a smart arse and was found to be sadly lacking.
jayaybe1 I do not know why you seem to be so angry/affected by my "summary" of a long video LOL.
Alien Gadfly yeah man agree!

AT M thanks alot for your advice! i totally gonna start eating more of that!
+Lana de Ville
Best approach with carbs is to have them as a treat at the end of the meal, not as a snack or bulk of your food.
I do believe there is something to this. I had some health issues a while that made me lose apetite so I started eating only 1 or 2 meals per day. I got so used to it so even today I only eat a meal at around 5 pm and possible a snack a couple of hours later. Awesome! There are so many people finding results like this! I hope fasting catches on big time.
If you fasted longer you would trigger autophagy, release stem cells and regenerate your whole system
I've been intermittent fasting for 19 weeks and I'm down 25 lbs. I don't even work out. I started at 302 lbs and I'm so happy I found Dr Jason Fung and started doing this.
Are you still doing intermittent fasting? And how much weight have you lost?
Really good.
beast. keep going!
I believe in everything Mark says here. Ive been doing intermittent fasting (only eat from Noon-8pm) for 4 months and I feel leaner, sharper, and more energetic. It works
Are you still doing it? How long does it take to have mental effects in your experience?
This guy is awesome. I've been using intermittent fasting and it really works.
Where do you live that has the norm of eating 4 meals a day? Western culture emphasizes 3 meals, but I have never heard of 4.

I really need to start fasting again.
you still fasting?

Wow
How did it go?
Fasting is the best thing you can gift to yourself. Come on everyone.
First time in my life in 2020 at 62, I have water fasted for 3 days. Then in the same year I have water fasted for 10 days. Total 13 days water fasting in 2020.
In 2021 in Feb I have water fasted for 16 days. Then in Nov water fasted for 3 days. Now on Christmas day I have started 3 day water fasting. Today 12/27/21 I will be finishing my fast. Total 22 days water fasting in 2021. I feel wonderful.
Thanks. Great information from someone who fasts for two days a month and only eats one meal a day. Life changing stuff!
WOW!! Amazing!!! This really opened up my eyes, thank you so much professor Mattson for sharing your valuable knowledge!!
Thank you professor Mattson for explain with clarity. I been doing intermitent fasting for over three months and i feel great.
Great to see another vegan do the fasting :)
Why don't you continue with IF, it is less hard and can be maintained for years every day.
What's has age got to do with it ? Genuine enquiry as I want to try this and am 60 yrs of age

Your speech today was the first i have ever heard that confirmed my own beliefs that fasting is indeed a remade for cognitive efficiency.
And i can't stop smiling because it is a deeply wonderful experience to discover that one is correct & supported by facts.
I fast every other day, drinking only water & or freshly squeezed fruits & vegetables.

Islamic fasting is different from intermittent fasting though. You can drink water/coffee(no sugar) in intermittent fasting which can help us to fast for longer times, while Islamic fasting is a fast that takes from the sun rise to sundown without eating anything.

I love intermittent fasting! Fasting has really improved my life! Thank you for a more in depth theory as to why this is.
Awesome my mom does intermediate fasting and so do I and I believe it helps my cognitive in her cognitive ability
