  • An enlightening and provocative presentation is given by Valter Longo updating audience on the benefits of fasting for life-extension.
    Dr. Valter Longo is the Edna M. Jones Professor of Gerontology and Biological Sciences, and Director of the Longevity Institute at the University of Southern California - Davis School of Gerontology, Los Angeles. Dr. Longo’s studies focus on the fundamental mechanisms of aging in simple organisms, mice and humans. The Longo laboratory has identified several genetic pathways that regulate aging in simple organisms and reduce the incidence of multiple diseases in mice and humans. His laboratory also described both dietary and genetic interventions that protect cells and improve the treatment and prevention of cancer and other diseases in mammals. He received his Ph.D. in Biochemistry from the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) in 1997 and his postdoctoral training in the Neurobiology of Aging and Alzheimer’s Diseases at USC. He started his independent career in 2000 at the University of Southern California, School of Gerontology.

    I used to think, every time I got a bad head cold or influenza, my appetite would disappear for days. I could drink water but even thinking about food just made me nauseous. Now I know why. My body knows exactly what it was doing. All this time my mother would tell me to just "eat something, even a little bit" and I could feel my body saying no. It all makes sense now.

      @@DC-ik1tk it could possibly be both. Starve a cold and a fever, as fasting is healing and rejuvenating for the body. However, hunger is an indication of when the body most wants food, just like thirst is an indication of when the body most needs hydration.

      @SCharlesS Год назад +1

      @@tanrat7 except that in the modern, 1st work. hunger is usually an indication of addiction since most people are eating something every couple hours - and the food they eat is driving hunger. those protein bards are NOT helping hunger subside. and their hunger comes up after 4 hours of not eating. And even if they got to 12 hours and felt hungry their body is most likely not actually hungry if they had been feeding it constantly prior to that. in fact, if you can get past 24 hours or more your hunger feeling will subside thanks to the Leptin hormone.

    His work is the final death knell to conventional medicine as we've known it. He's basically proved that we can completely revamp all the systems that accelerate aging and age-related diseases. Essentially regardless of what your disease from here on out, the first SCIENTIFIC thing to do is to fast. From a common cold all the way to cancer. Man, its a great time to be alive!

U have a two hour window to eat on those times. I lost 11 lbs. At one time i have gone 24 hrs without eating. I find that sometimes I don't need or want food. In addition to the arts, civic advancements, architecture, civic organization, and the general love of beauty ( Le maladie de Stendal the illness from a surfeit of beauty in Italy) . And then... the widespread human connectedness of Italians! An example of which even in his one-time interview with the 122 yr-old gent in this video includes his singing a song for us with this interviewer who in such an Italian way sees and feels his being and helps us to do so too. I have lost some weight although wasn’t particularly overweight in the first place.

    Read his book the Longevity Diet. Might sway the keto folks over. I eat like he suggests, and usually lots of good quality carbs daily. Still losing weight even when I don't workout. His book is worth a look if you want to avoid disease and live past 100.

      People are brain washed into thinking they need to eat 3 meals a day, or that they need food for energy and must eat on a regular basis, AND they eat food that doesn't really satiate them so they feel hungry all the time. They are truly addicted to the sugars and starches in their diets. Lastly, many people think they will automatically get sick and if the stop eating for even a few hours.

I don't need to be sold any further. (note) I'm now doing one meal a day twice a week. Not eating any more than when I have two meals. The difference is astonishing. My blood work shows virtually every marker significantly improved. When my weight goal is achieved I'm gonna do a longer fast. Mainly for the autophagy which they say will help clean up the loose skin I've gotten from weight loss. But the 16/8 meal plan I plan to stick with till I die. Nothing but benefits from my point of view.

Because my thyroid was removed in 1971 I am forced to go further to regenerate a thyroid, and have to date put in over 8000 hours of two week long dryfasting sessions, and am now off thyroid replacements. It took dedicated dryfasting for me to realize what bad condition my body was in beyond simply the thyroid issue.
    I am now in day 21 of this dryfast, maximizing autophagy to allow the body to remove whatever does not serve it and restore fluidity to the great lymphatic system. The Nobel Prize in 2016 was awarded for studies into autophagy.

It's nice to know that it gets easier as days pass, as toxins are removed from the body. I actually felt invulnerable from disease and infection after the 10-day mark and was feeling quite good overall. Most importantly, is what foods and quantities you consume when breaking the fast. Overall, it was a very healing experience.

    Would be interesting to do a study with people from 2 groups -- one group of people that are accustomed to fasting and a separate group that haven't done much fasting before the experiment. Reasoning would be whether stress hormones play a factor in effectiveness of starting to fast until the conclusion of the experiment. People accustomed to fasting probably wouldn't as worried about their next meal and dealing with hunger pangs and so anxiety about something they've never tried before would be less and could result in significantly different results between the two groups. Some people fast as part of their religious beliefs and have been doing it since an early age so it isn't so new to them.
