Its called dha and its grossly avoided. Eating omega6 throws the omega6 to 3 balance. Saturated fats were found by nonepidemiological science to discredit old science referred to here. Just an awful disservice this is.
What a great talk! He makes it very simple, to summarize do these for reducing risk of Alzheimer's and increase well being: 1. Eat colorful fruits and veggies daily: blueberries, grapes, broccoli etc for better memory. 2. Take Vitamin E to eliminate free radicals from brain but not just from pills but from foods like nuts / seeds (just a few), spinach, mangoes etc. 3. Reduce trans-fat from foods like donuts, pastries; and saturated fats like from Bacon, meat, cheese/dairy. 4. Reduce metals like iron, copper. Do not use iron skillets etc. 4. Exercise: nothing crazy, just do brisk walk three times a week, up to 40 minutes each time. Do all of the above and one can reduce the risk of Alzheimer's by 80% even if you have the gene.
I am from india. Our food was like you describe it. Our snacks were made from jaggery and nuts. And then Pepsi and coke came in, lays chips became common. We forgot yoga. There’s a lot of good practices that should be brought back- which includes what to eat and when to eat.
The West came to destroy ..the wise leave all destructive processes ..eat no rice no chapati ..have nuts seeds fruit veges..bajra. Jowar rotis all fasts started in India. Go back to a big OMAD ..one meal a day..have ghee or oil from mustard n coconut ..
Sued the government?...You should have just wrote this guy a check! Where do you think the government gets it's money. The more they are sued the higher our taxes go up. Vote the dead weight, corrupt, anti-American politicians out (if possible)!
This guy is da bomb. I love him. You may not like his goody-two shoe aura, but he knows his stuff ,and does good in the world, unlike many people of his stature, that are just big pharma whores.
Very good information, but do NOT underestimate the importance of sleep and stress. Not enough sleep and too much stress literally kills brain cells. And so do diet soda.
Yes! I totally agree with you! Plus, I think that is when you lose weight... when you're sleeping... I think our bodies do their after hours "maintenance" work while we're sleeping...
I’m so glad I found this video while studying for my anatomy class. I’m only 15, and I’m very great full I can get a head start on working on keeping my brain healthy :)
It's never too early to start taking care of your body! Studies have shown that things like heart disease can start developing even in early childhood (a huge percentage of American children already have fatty streaks in their coronary arteries). You'll be doing yourself a huge favor by starting to follow a healthy lifestyle now. :)
The fact you can use a phone and are 80 years old is impressive Sir I know plenty of oldies who try out a phone and feel like it's a piece of alien technology
You turned the pain of losing your Dad into a simple, informative, random act of love to help prevent further suffering ❤️ you Dr Barnard, are very cool 😎 thank you

@@Mercymurv "believed to be'" doesn't prove anything. I haven't read anything about a connection between eating animal products and dementia. I would have to see the nature of the proof. I'm sure that it is extremely thin! There is a 2013 video on youtube in which Dr. Greger says that vegans/vegetarians have 3 times the Alzheimer's of meat eaters as well as the same rates of heart disease and cancer. The Alzheimer's makes sense, because so many vegs are deficient in B12, as are older people. I eat little meat and lots of vegetables, but regard a vegan way of eating to be high risk and I supplement with B vitamins, including B12. Since Alzheimer's has been referred to as type 3 diabetes, I think it more likely that it is a high carb, high sugar diet that is likely to be the key causative factor.
Not only was this some of the best content I’ve ever read on dementia, but he is an outstanding speaker. I cried at the end. I’m so grateful for what he helped accomplish with terminating the food pyramid.
This man and his colleagues advocating for whole plant foods are heroes to me, because following their advice has reversed my heart disease. Proven with ultrasounds of my carotids and aorta, four years apart. It really is do-able.
Thank you so much for this! I’m 23 and play time is really over when it comes to health. At the end of the day it’s nobody’s responsibility but your own so I’m trying to do better for myself and my babies!
This is a bit dated.. The studies on sleep in recent years have turned out to be a big factor. Lack of sleep (under 7 hours) leads to the buildup of those proteins he discussed in the brain. Look up Mathew Walker.. Mind blowing stuff when he went on JRE couple years ago.
Alzheimer's is absolutely the last thing you'd want. I took care of my mom for the last ten years of her life. She got to the very last stage of Alzheimer's. They even forget how to swallow. If a room was on fire, a severe Alzheimer's victim wouldn't even know to get out. It's a monster of a disease. My dad had it, too. Heartbreaking.
exactly. a perfect depiction of this was the dairy section on the plate diagram. with all the scientific knowledge there is about how dairy is actually detrimental to health yet the dairy industry makes huge donations to the us government and recieve massive tax subsidies and despite this is included in the health guidleines.... interesting

Right? There is one lecture from him that I've watched about 5 times. He's so likable and such a talented speaker. Everything he says makes perfect sense.
emotion is not scientific and is used by the snake oil merchant in selling their wears. The emotion is to sell a story regardless if it has any merit or is just BS. At around 6:40 in the video he talks about Iron and copper in the brain and talks about a rusting fry pan. this is absolute crap. we have many minerals (metals) in our body and of course they are in an oxidized form. Iron makes up the majority of our blood as being the major component of Hemoglobin. without it we will not be able to transport oxygen to the cells or brain. once you have to revert to emotion and distortions, any truth if it exists, is lost. entertaining yes, accurate not really. there is an agenda in Dr Barnard's talks and they all revolve around a vegan or no meat diet. it would be interesting to find out if there are any pecuniary interests at play.
Me too!!!! Its awful, hope everyone stays safe and their family's too! Wish i watched this before i went shopping bc i bought alot of snacks and meats .... I am a person who is very concerned about physical and mental health. I am on a healthy diet recommended by my dietitian who works for National Health Service UK. I am also doing aerobic exercises and brisk walking regularly. But I never knew that brisk walking makes my hippocampus bigger, which improves my memory. I am so grateful to Dr Neal Barnard. This is one of the best presentations I have ever come across.
@Wille The foods are veggies and fruits. The more colorful the better. Blueberries. Carrots. Grapes leafy greens. Nothing processed or made by man. Only things that grow in nature. No oils because they have saturated fats which clogs your arteries. Called a Whoke Food Plant Based Diet WFPB Diet. Cures all diseases not just memory diseases. Heart disease diabetes. Auto immune diseases. Eat right and your body knows how to heal itself. Nothing new. It has been known for many years. Many good doctors who have done their own research know it. But they don’t teach this in medical school!! Why? Who runs the medical schools--the pharmacy industry!! We live in a corrupt world. PS. No animal foods !
I watched this video 6 months ago and it’s still effecting my life today in the most positive way. I think this is the most important Ted talk I’ve watched

I can relate. My mum passed away last March after 16 years of Alzheimer’s. Five year as a complete vegetable. She was diagnosed at 66, quite young actually. I was 34, too young to loose your mum, too young to parent a parent. All the women in her family died of the same illness. I became vegetarian (almost vegan) years ago, just by chance, then started running, cycling long distance. Again by chance. I didn’t know I was fighting my genes (and the fear, a paralyzing fear sometimes!!!) that way. I’ll keep eating a plant-food diet and exercise daily. Keep learning new things (my job helps luckily). I also stopped drinking alcohol and started meditating. Women in my family had bad genes, yes, but they never changed their lifestyle. I have. This is my personal bet I can fight my genes. I am fortunate enough to have access to this content as my English is near native levels. But many Italians can’t and I think they’re missing a lot of vital information. Thank you for your researches and for sharing. You and other like you (dr. Greger eg) can really change the life of people worldwide. Thank you, Dr Neal Barnard. I wish my mother knew what you've just taught. She would not have suffered from Alzheimer's. It brought such agony to both my mother and her family that I wish no one in this world would ever have that awful illness. When my mother passed away I had no more tears to weep for her; I only had only tears of joy that, at last, she was free from her immense suffering. I miss her, but not her agony. She's in Heaven now where she suffers no more.
I think I know how you feel Philo Logos; my mother suffers from dementia and it is amazing how fast she went from having trouble with words and names to not knowing who her own offspring are, not being able to speak, walk, or take care of herself. It's pure heartbreak for us, her family, and I cannot imagine what it is like for her. And of course there is the question: Am I next?

One the best ted talks, Although we have heard this many times he is so compelling. This can impact us so greatly. He may have saved millions of lives from incredible suffering.
I had grandparents on both sides of my family that struggled with Alzheimer’s, which is one of the many reasons I decided to go on a plant-based whole food diet and also convinced my parents to do the same.. My dad has lost 50lbs and was able to cut his meds in half, I’m 35lbs down and have twice as much energy and stamina and my crazy heartburn that I struggled with for years went away in a couple weeks.. and I’ve only been on this diet for 5 months! Thank goodness for people like Neal that are out there spreading the word about this life-saving lifestyle.
By far, this is one of the most profoundly moving, and intelligent, TED talks I've heard. Science has found the fountain of youth. Unfortunately, we have our work cut out for us; as many of our parents are stuck in their ways of eating, conditioned and addicted to the sugars, high sodium and saturated fats that are processed into so many of the foods consumed in higher quantities in the Western diet, you couldn't pay many people to give up their meats and cheeses. I've recently switched to a vegan/ plant based diet in the past year, and where I could feel the difference immediately, a year later and I can see that I look years younger. I try to convince my mom, dad, and my last remaining grandmother, but they eat what they want, and all I can do is just listen.
I feel you, I love my family so much I wish I could make them eat exactly what I want them to so they can be around longer. But they can be so stubborn!
Made me cry... I miss U mom, so much. Yes, I'm a highly sensitive person. Yes I cry at heartfelt feelings of lost loved ones, especially ones that could've been helped. I wish everyone would listen to this and other videos on good health and healthy eating.
Please don´t cry Nicole ! You´re n o t alone my friend ! We all have to face the nirvana of our parents. Let us please all learn from their faults . . .They also don´t want us to mourn forever . . .

Thank you, so much Dr. Bernard. I really appreciate watching this and I learned so much!I feel like I empathize with you, on the loss of your father and I hope that your heart is healing well holding on to your memories of your dad. In heaven, you will see him again.
WOW!!!! This information is life changing! My Dad had Alzheimer’s. Watching his declining mental and physically health was HORRIBLE! At that time, my Mother was his caregiver until his behavior became aggressive. He actually died of pneumonia. While we as a family helped out when we could, to this day I honestly don’t know how my Mother did it. I am convinced that when she died and went to Heaven that God gave her two halos! So THANKFUL for this presentation as my biggest fear is to develop this terrible disease and to be a burden to my loved ones. At least now with the information provided in this video, I can make better choices and while this may not prevent me from developing this disease, perhaps it will slow the progression and improve my overall quality of life!!! THANK YOU SO VERY MUCH, Mr. Barnard!!!!😊😊👍👍

You got sucked in by his emotional appeal. Do you not see that's marketing? Low carb and intermittent fasting is what you want. I promise. Please look into it, before making an emotional decision.
@@Kube_Dog what is he selling exactly? A well balanced diet? Not to mention, I'm a vegan and most of my energy comes from fats and proteins. Following this man's advice does not make it impossible to eat low carbs. Furthermore, this talk focused specifically on food and the brain, specifically as it pertains to memory loss/dementia. Intermittent fasting and a low carb diet have little to do with that. Lastly, of course he's using appeal to emotion; rhetoric makes talks like this easily accessible and relatable. Just because he used this appeal, does not discredit his argument.
@Gemma W Do what you want. It will be another diet that may work a little in the short term, then you get worse. And you will have wasted months of time and effort, only to be worse off. Better to come to keto and IF now, but obviously the choice is yours.
@Gemma W I know people do keto/if to lose weight, and it does work. But it's really about health. The weight loss is only a reflection of improved health.

Sadly the truth is another... The ideal is to be able to use your body and diet fats. As your body is the one of a predator, you don't have 4 stomachs as a cow nor a gut designed to eat all day without health side effects. This guy has outdated information.
Veganism is a happier story to buy...it's like a Disney movie where all the creatures live and play together. It is seductive in that way. It "seems" like it would be healthiest. It's not. We do better with amino acid profiles of meat, and low carbs that keep insulin down and HGH up.
I suffered from sever attention deficit all my life. As a child I used to think I was just not as smart as the other kids. Over the years I learned to cope with my ADD. Finally in my late 40's when it started affecting my work, I decided to go on medication. Fast forward a couple of years I heard about the Keto Diet and Intermittent Fasting. I decided to give that a try to lose some weight and surprisingly I noticed a change in my focus and clarity. I was all of sudden have bursts of super focus and my mind was not wandering. I have been on the Keto diet for now 6 months and have no trouble focusing. I am not medical expert but I love the new found focus, I have lost 35 pounds. I am also a long distance runner, before Keto I would carb load before a race like a half marathon, now I run a half marathon without putting an ounce of carb in me. So though I don't claim to be an expert, I love the positive changes that Keto and Intermittent Fasting has made in my life. Just my two cents !!!

Thanks for the great lecture.. I could feel how much sorry you felt for your dad declining mental health in his later years due Alzhiemer and seeing what that entails. May he rest in peace
In my experience (just based off observation), I feel that movement and using your brain, whether its reading, writing, building things, or anything that causes you do have to figure something out, is the best thing you can do above diet. NOW, I know that diet makes a difference. I am just basing this off the people that are old 70+ and still cognitively sharp. I had the same experience with my dad that he did. My dad was only 62 when he died of Alzheimer's (top 10% for how young he was). He was always on the lazier side. Looking back after he already got really bad, I realized that he wasn't just lazy when it came to doing chores around the house but anything that required him to critically think like reading instructions, or having to figure something out, he'd generally shy away from or take the easiest route possible. He used to be horrible at cleaning up around the house, always wanted people to do stuff for him and wasn't that organized of a person outside of his interests like music (guitars, amps etc) and anything to do with his motorcycle. I started observing a lot of people that are 70+ that are mentally sharp and realize they are always doing things for themselves. Still cutting their own grass, taking care of the garden, grocery shopping, cooking, cleaning, etc... A lot of those people I am referring to still eat meat, dairy, pastries etc. Now I'm sure there's more to it and genes play a roll as well but I do not feel like those people have particularly great diets but they all are hard workers and always want to do things themselves. That's just what I have observed. Anyone else have thoughts on this?
Those are very valid points. I'm no psychologist/psychiatrist but I wanted to point out that your dad had classic symptoms of undiagnosed ADHD. Brain Health;.... I was once a Hazmat Response team member. I've learned that mining, forestry, agriculture, and industry, (particularly the petro-chemical industry), has polluted most of the world, in it's zeal to exploit for profit. Now the generations of children that are not effected by this pollution is diminishing. Birth defects, mental problems, hormone unbalances, are the result. Neil Barnard points out the role of exercise and diet in mitigating the damage. The whole of the meat and processed food industries are profiting from our ignorance. Glad some one is saying something about it!
Neal, thank you. Sorry about the loss of your father. My father passed in 2011, and I did not get back in time from my PhD research at hospitals in Kazakhstan.
I've been chopping 2-3 cloves of RAW garlic everyday for the last 2 years. My Blood Pressure prior, was around 138 or 92. After a couple of months my blood pressure went down to 111 or 70. Also since taking it I haven't gotten any sicknesses such as the flu or a cold. I give a spoon full of RAW chopped garlic to my wife and two children atleast 4 times a week. They went for a visit to the Philippines with a bunch of family members. Once they arrived in the Philippines everybody in the group got food poisoning except my family; I read that Raw Garlic kills the bacteria from the degraded food in the stomach, stopping you from getting sick. After that incident all of my extended family members have started eating Raw Garlic weekly. If you rub a sliced piece of garlic onto acne, in a few days it will dry up and disappear. I had a tooth cavity and rubbed garlic on it and the pain went away. If you rub sliced garlic onto your mouth gums it will eliminate gingivitis without medication. One other major benefit of eating RAW Uncooked Garlic is mosquitoes won't bite you. The mosquitoes smell the garlic in on your skin and are repulsed by the smell and taste, I'm speaking from experience. The list of benefits from garlic goes on and on. WHAT TO DO: Chop up 2-3 cloves of RAW Garlic on a plate, let it sit for 15 minutes so the chemicals in the garlic mix ( the chemical mixing is the secret ). Then take a spoon and swallow the RAW Garlic with a spoon and a glass of water ( don't chew it or you'll have horrendous breath ). Do this 4-5 days a week and you'll immediately start seeing the Health benefits. Remember for acne elimination you have to apply it externally. God Bless.

What a great talk! He makes it very simple, to summarize do these for reducing risk of Alzheimer's and increase well being:
It is a great outline...i wonder what he thinks of Teflon cookware.

At around 6:40 in the video he talks about Iron and copper in the brain and talks about a rusting fry pan. this is absolute crap. we have many minerals (metals) in our body and of course they are in an oxidized form. I had grandparents on both sides of my family that struggled with Alzheimer’s, which is one of the many reasons I decided to go on a plant-based whole food diet and also convinced my parents to do the same..

I had been taking Nexxium for 10 years--stopped needing it as soon as I went WFPB 7.5 years ago. Take care.

Your dad would be proud. 😌Thank you for sharing such important info in an energetic yet educational talk!

he was talking about his father at the beginning and i suddenly remenbered my grandfather who just died a year ago because of the same memory problem
That was an amazing talk... He made it sound so simple, which each of us could follow to keep our families live more productively...
Love him! He’s so awesome! Got tears in my eyes when he talked about turning the time back and his dadda 😩

Wow!!
Dr. Barnard is a hero!!
He may not have children but through his education he has "fathered" thousands of "children" who will never forget him. His legacy will live forever!!
May he, just like Dr. Elmsworth live to be over a hundred and still be working at age 95 and older.
Yes, lie and say that cholesterol is unhealthy, that is what makes someone a true hero.
I was the sole-caregiver for my mother, who had Alzheimer's. Towards the end, she didn't know, specifically, who I was. She did, however, know that I was someone who loved her, unconditionally, and that she felt the same way about me.... she never exercised...😪
What was the cholesterol, HDL, LDL TC, blood pressure?

Aluminum causes Alzheimer’s. No vaccines, aluminum foil, anti acids, cheese.

Love this! All these plant based doctors are changing the world. :)
Am 59 been plant based since 2010 when my brother died of colon cancer...our dad died of it in 1988....FEELING FINE at 59! No meds, ...HUGE energy...not even a sick day from work in OVER 12 years! IT Works!
But those animals HAVE hormones...whether farm raised or free range...why should we be eating OTHER animals' hormones? Just saying...see?

You are so right and I'm so happy to read this! Congratulations to your progress!
I have much energy, Getting excercise will make me less hyper and ADD
Had you read the life of the final prophet Muhammad peace be upon him you would know that he fasted and recommended to eat nutritious food in season and also included nuts, dates, water, milk, honey, never consumed alcohol or anything derived from swine. Rest and mental/physical exercise as well as God consciousness followed with good actions.
Alzheimer can be avoided other ways too, not just the vegan agenda way...
Thanks so much for appreciative information. I do morning walk 1:30 hours daily since I was 40 years and now am 60 and staying healthy. Heartiest salute to you....
The best line " genes are not ur destiny"❤️

Genes are just reactive to their environment. There are several types of environment: your external environment (weather and temperature and air pollution), your internal environment (nutrition or fast food. )and your social environment(Do you get your daily dose of pheromone exposure and friendly smiles? i know this Covid-19 isolation is making people depressed or down right crazy. )May the inner peace be with you. ☮️🎼🎶🎵Happy holidays. ⛄✨😸🐕✨

Definitely our Health is our wealth, nature gave all the natural colours of fruit and veg for a very important reason.
And what is that reason smartass?
@@Jblah Because the human brain is inherently wired to be attracted to "pretty" colors- This, in part, was/is our primal cue to eat fruits and vegetables (along with other "aesthetic" foods). The thing that would've attracted a prehistoric human to their eating habits is the food's attractiveness and availability. Little do they know upon eating a certain fruit or veg that they are consuming a wealth of protective nutrients.
@@1SUPERELLIE1 ? Our ancestors ate predominantly meat.. We would only eat fruits and veg when we didn't have access to meat. Plants were our survival fallback foods...
@@reeceb7759 Nothing is perfect, historians know more about the past than others do. What we can all ground our minds to is that today, within human society, we (the collective scientists of health) understand more than we ever have before and can get real results from testing different ideas. So roll with the info we do have, trust your body when things feel clear and right, and practice having trust in yourself to let that mind de-tensify. Be healthy and take health seriously (including the small things like diet and exercise) because it's far more important than most people think. (in relation to the unknown future).
he's not saying all or nothing you can still eat meat and be healthy just include fruit and vegetables
Man, I wasn't expecting the end, it made me drop some tears.
Came across this accidentally and I am sure glad that I did. I think that may have been the best Ted Talk that I've ever watched.
Best 17 minutes spent watching this TED Talk, thank you Neal.
I only mention it because I at 31 found out I have it, and just KNOWING about it and educating myself makes all the difference in the world. Sorry to hear you lost your dad and thank you for sharing that.
@@dpa8184 Since being diagnosed with ADHD, what have you done different? Were you prescribed a medication, if so, what is it and has it helped? Also have you done anything differently lifestyle-wise

Yeah he looks great! Yet he is forgetting that he was raised with eating some meat, dairies and animal fat. I doubt he wouldn't have these good bones structures and good genes without that kind of diet. And you don't know what else he is eating in large quantity to compensate for not eating meat or animal products...
Almost everyone from his generation was raised on an omnivore diet which include meats. I am only guessing here but it's most likely the truth.

God Bless.
Wow simply wow!!!
