BushcraftGear Top Tips #1

- I get a lot of questions about my gear, the little "tweaks" to kit that makes it work better for me or the things I do with my clothing and equipment to make me more comfortable and effective in the woods.
So I decided to start an occasional series on my TOP-TIPS that you could easily apply to your gear.
In this one (TT#1) we look at how I made a simple alteration to my bivvy bag, that makes a world of difference to its performance. If you don't already have a bivvy bag, but would like to try this - the one you want to buy is the British military version and you want the one with the large "gusset" in the front. These can be purchased from my good friends at Endicotts (www.endicotts.co.uk).
If you want to look at the stuff I make & sell - here is the link to my shop:

Just watched for the second time. Absolute genius.
A simple but really effective modification . Another great video Neil. Keep them coming 👍🏼
Great tips.
That would be really cool with a bug net over the entrance.
Yet another cracking innovation. Looking forward to more hints & tips in this occasional series. Take care Neil & all the best, Neil G
Very good hack, simple and clever. I think with a few more pegs you could maye a very nice porch by hanging a poncho over the ridgeline you created.
Spot on Neil, I use the British Army bivi bag to. I love this idea, another one to add to my list of homemade projects. Thanks for sharing bud, looking forward to the next bushcraft tip. Take care 👍
Really appreciate your channel, great ideas and realistic, without silly prices. And I like your advice for getting the children out. Thank you.
Hi Neil. Have watched this a few times but just re-watched to refresh my memory as I now have an old British Army bivi bag winging it's way to me from E-Bay and it will give me a chance to start learning some sewing skills to add the loops. Keep the videos coming and stay safe.
Brilliant! I made one change: i positioned the straps at the leg 10cm from the edges to the center - it gives more free space/movement for the legs
That's a cracking idea, mate! Thanks for sharing ✌🏽
Put a 75cm zip down each side and you're on a winner. Personally, I've mixed feelings about them, done the canvass coffin bit for a few years. Now I want an almost glamping rig as I get older, but without the weight. Today I tried out a new bike packing rig system for an overnighter, hammock/basha cover, quilt and light pad. Got it down to 7kg minus the mess kit.
If I take the tent - (2 man Banshee) just about 12 kg in all, me and bike are happy with that. (home made freeze dried Chicken & Mushroom Curry & rice with 3" Naans, tiny pots of chutney ex take out stuff). Hot chocky for night time, coffee sachets for tea and breaky with cheesy crumpets, winner.
Love the hat...looking sharp out there with that great bivi setup 👍
Really like this simple but inventive idea!
Finally, a bushcraft geeza who talks my lingo! Great tips mate. Subscribed
Excellent that’s a quality tip, what a great idea.
Thank you for this tip. I love simple solutions like this.
They say there's nothing new under the sun but that's a new one on me. Great tip, thanks for sharing. Be safe and be lucky. Wol.
Very kind words buddy
Just had a thought about doing this and low and behold I found your video. Brilliant video 👍😊
I want to add an additional flap mod to the front closing off the profile plus mosi net panels so the front can be secured from mosi. A couple of Velcro tie backs keep everything tidy. These bags are perfect emergency shelters now.
Excellent idea mate, I haven't used a bivi bag in years.
That is a really cool idea. Thanks for sharing. Now I have another idea to occupy my time.
Such a simple yet effective mod. Thank you for sharing 👍
Great video Neil! Loved the he 'Massive!' clip! I've done the same 'hasty Bivy bag flip' in the rain too!! Love the setup, and I'm going to mod my CDN Bivy the same... And maybe add a mid-length loop for air flow and volume inside the bag. The tree tie out is a Stellar addition, changes the usefulness to so much more.
Watching this made me wish I was out in the wild doing an overnighter . Another great video Neil
I might try also adding a mosquito net, maybe with velcro.

Hi Neil, great tip, the shape of it reminds me a a whale shark. I'm going to try and do the same to mine. thankyou.

Cracking setup Neil, not come across the British army gortex sleeping bag with that V shape at the top, does the tag have a date stamp or nato number, really like the idea, just need to make sure when buying one that it's this newer version ,really like your videos, happy new year to you neil and your family, cheers Craig
Ring Kev at Endicotts...I didn't get mine from him (long story!) But I was talking to him last week and I know he has them in stock.

Wow. Nice.
Hiya neil, thanks for this tip I may try this myself I've never really done any sewing but I'll have to get practicing. All the best mate. Chris
Great idea!
Pretty slick
Hi,,,, just a idea,,,,,sew a few more loops to the hood and thread a stick through to keep the bend on the hood,,,,
Nice one.
Brilliant Neill..K.I.S.S. Never fails
Interesante.... me gusta...
Saludos desde Buenos Aires Argentina
Love it.
Mine as a 3/4 length zip down the middle,,to make it easier to get into,,mind you I use it under a tarp
Great idea! Have you considered attaching a bug net to the opening?
good idear ill try it on mine
noice one.
i guess you could go a slight step further, with some old bendable tent poles, make a semi circle and get that "hood" opened up.
Excellent one dude.
One question, if your using that way, would it leak thru where your feet are touching or is that only canvas that would do that, this being goretex wouldnt??
Damn that's brilliant!
Niel
Loving your channel, even more so, because you are UK based. Therefore, edibles, tree species, etc; more relevant to me being based in the UK.
I am 65 next month. Never wild camped in my life.
I am retiring because of my health. Will be having some practice sessions in the garden, if they go well I will venture farther afield .
I will have limited income and finding your money saving tips extremely useful.
My DD tarp arrived yesterday. Now looking to buy carinthia bag.
Do you have an industrial sewing machine? I am wondering how you are sewing attachment points etc; to your sleeping bag cover.
Thanks 🔥
Kenneth,
Thanks for the message. If you are on a budget, look at the current issue sleeping bag, its lots cheaper and is still a good bag. You can learn loads in your garden, perfecting the basics, before heading out to the woods.
Best of luck buddy.

Neil
Brilliant vid gunna get one
Very Kool my friend, i got a US military bivy bag but its not like yours, was curious whats the name of this one is or what sleep system did it come with. Thanks and cant wait to see more of your tips.
Thanks for the comments. The bag is a British army issue dpm sleeping bag cover (see the description).
Awesome buddy awesome...
interesting channel, have just subbed will catch up on more videos cheers
would still prefer my DD tarp tent config but that is a damn good fast backup
I've been thinking about moding my bivi bag some how. This looks perfect for me. Brilliant video Ian. Did you just see through the bag and seam seal the webbing loops?
No, the holes are only at the extremes (top and bottom) there are none on the main body , so I didn't bother
@@greencraft4783 thnax Ian I thought this but I thought that I would check. Have a fabulous 2020
just buy a 3x4 tarp with preset rings in it and take those elastic binders you use for bikes
Good tip. Can you put these on your shop please.
They would be very expensive as I would need to buy the bivvy bags, and as I'm not in the surplus market I would have to pay the same price as you.
Great tip. Subbed your channel.
BRILLIANT !!!
I have a question. I am from Portuga, euope. Here, most people dont care about survival items, foods or ralated. "The governement wil provide." I have some items that I cant develop in this country. Could you help from there?
Познавательно 👍
Did you hand sew those Web loops on, or machine them on. Tried hand sewing them on, material too tough to go through and not held securely by thread.
I am not an expert sewer.
My fiancee can use a sewing machine, so she can help me. 👍🏻
Just wondered how you done it. As they were box stitched the Web loops. 👍🏻
Yes John, I used a machine. You could try rivets
Right tried sewing had lesson from fiancee louisa. 👍🏻 Then watched how to do a box stich on RUclips.
Yes sewing is easy for you neil with years of practice.
As you said in your video to us viewers just sew them on.
Everything new is hard in life and takes practice and experience.
I did some practice sewing. Found out I need a thicker needle. I was using a 100, turns out I need a 120 or more.
Might have to use a sewing awl by hand and learn how to use that before I can do the job of the loops. I need a thicker stronger needle for the sewing machine to do the box stich. Machine needle would not go through the Web loops too thick material.
Not that easy for me to do.
Rivets would be easier I think. 👍🏻
Right done what you said. I ordered some 6.7 mm rivets of eBay. Gone through the loops and positioned them on. I used a Swiss arm sewing awl to make the holes through the webbing. The rivets could then be put together through the holes. I then used a small hammer and a block of wood to fuse together the rivets both sides of the bivvy.
All on now in position. I put two in each loop and super glued the rest of the loop.
Should do the job now and be like yours. 👍🏻 🙂. Plan B 😆 as plan A failed. Thanks.
One question Neal what is the bivvy bags NSN or MSN? National Stock Number or Military Stock Number, (might be printed on the inside of the hood?) that way anyone wanting to buy one will be sure to get the right one
who makes the rucksack that you're using?
It's a Berghaus Cyclops Roc from the eighties. It and the Crusader were the forerunners to the PLCE that went on issue
Does anyone know of commercial companies that would do a proper job on sowing the loops on etc?
I was thinking of taking my bivi into one of the local alterations shops (you sometimes see them in with dry cleaners) to see if they would add the loops etc as they have the industrial sewing machines and experience to add them on quickly.
And subbed
Went to the web link. No gortex bivy for sale. Help.
Try dropping them an email, I spoke to Kev last week and he had some
Mace a video with Hazel
Genius ...
genius!
Looks like a right laugh !
Nice ides. But not if your 6 foot 4 lol. Wouldnt be enough room for me to sleep in the rain
Just put a poncho up and use it like it is
Sounds like Australia, looks like the U.P.

What's so great about living in a small confinements I don't get it 😞😤
Hey I can't argue that but the worse is to spend the night in lightweight packable crap as you call it
