With freedom fast approaching and the chance of some overnighters looming on the horizon, I wanted to get owtnabowt and check my British army bivi-bag was intact and serviceable, so I popped out to my local traffic roundabout (seriously, my apologies for the amount of traffic noise on this one) to try a set up emulating a hooped bivi.
In this video i use my trekking poles and tarp clamp (I looooooove the tarp clamp) to create a stable shelter with a small (read tiny) porch area which keeps the bivi off my face when relaxing.
Other than the noise, I really could have stayed in that spot all night, I was so comfortable. Looking forward to trying this set-up in the wild on an overnight hike as soon as possible
Its spring so I've changed my intro screen, the snow has finally gone and snowdrops are appearing on the landscape.

Thanks Helen. Sorry to hear about Emma, but good to hear from you again. I've been using the aquaquest hideaway bivi because it has a 3/4 clamshell opening.
@@owtnabowt2723 Thank you, but shit happens in our profession. Not a fan of the clamshell type access..guess it's practice and usage. Have looked at alternatives and we use, as an alternative to the MOD bag, the USGI MSS side zipped bivi. Very well made and totally condensation free. Helen and Katarin Luska-Law etc.l

A bivi bag keeps the sh1t off your main bag. Every wash reduces the thermal limit. 👍

....Additional tarp clamp half way down the top, lengthwise section of the bag & attach it to an overhead branch to create extra room above you to give more room, reduce condensation & create a 'ridge' or high spot to assist with rain run-off? Lovin' the clamps😎👏👏👏‼️Quality content😊👍.

owtnabowt - have a series of clamps down that top, length-line but turned at 90 degrees - then thread a taut ridge line through the line of holes ?!?! ⛺️ mini ridge tent 😍👍................gotta love the clamps!!

@@ryand141 Hi Ryan, The burner is a cheap and cheerful set up I bought from Amazon, but its my go to quick and easy solution when I just want to brew up. The link to it is below.
The mug is the only piece of titanium i have, specifically so I can drop it straight on to the heat. The cup I actually a little small compared to the burner, so it does need a little care when putting it in the heat, but I've not had any mishaps with it yet. I'll link the mug below as well

@@owtnabowt2723 Thanks very much for the links. I've heard other people say you cannot heat stuff up directly on a Trangia without a stove. Why is that when you can do it with other burners? Sorry, I don't know too much about alcohol stoves.
@@ryand141 I know some people worry about damaging there kit, but titanium's pretty resilient. What I would say, is don't use alcohol, it covers everything in a greasy soot that's a pain to clean off. I use meths 'cos its cleaner.

Very cool way of doing that setup, the polymath meths stove is a very lightweight stove, probably the lightest I have for sure, enjoyable video for sure, good health and safe travels, cheers craig 🌿

Innovative little adaption. I'm going to try that. I think I'd still be tempted to use the tarp just for the added protection and also to prevent condensation if if the bag gets wetted out on the outside.
Great idea with the tarp clamps. Could always have a tarp aswell to have a cooking shelter. I would use a cheap groundsheet under the bivibag and sleep mat inside.
Tarp clamp would also work to tie up my water filter to gravity feed into a bottle
Tarp clams are a game changer, especially with a cheaper tarp that's likely to less tie out points.

I've been looking at vids for using a bivvy bag. I prefer to learn from others solutions to uncomfortable nights😁. The tarp clips and poles seem a neat answer. Thanks for the link to source the clips, too. Happy camping.👍

Great video mate, would never have thought of this in a million years. I'd sleep with it upside down to have the hood as a cover but it's crazy what a few tarp clamps and trekking poles can do. Thanks for this tip! Best thing I've seen in ages, and so simple to do. Have you thought about making a velcro or popper midge net to drape down to? Would be pretty much perfect then!
Thamks for watching and taking time to comment Peter. A midge net is a great idea. I did think about adapting one of those magnetic door curtains. But strugled to come up with a way of doing it without making a permanent change to the bivi, however, you may have just given me an inspiration. :)
@@owtnabowt2723 Good idea.. Would love to see how it turns out with the magnets. I'm also keen to not have it be permanent. All I could think of is putting poppers on the draw cord bit as it wouldn't affect the gortex. But I honestly don't even know how that would work 😂 Also, I believe you can get no see um mesh by the roll but I have not found it yet.

Aww thank you Ana, its much appreciated, just watched your "Ireland out of lockdown" vid (and subbed). I was over there in September last year, but struggled to get any "wild camping" done. Its worse than that John, I'm on a strip of land between the motorway and a by-pass. Terrible location, but we were limited for travel at the time. It was the audio from this video that prompted me to get a proper wireless mic.

Cheers. Ive used this set up a few times now and itd rained on a couple. Worked pretty well and kept me dry and condensation free.

Great video. Definitely a great setup for Bivi on its own, but if you get wet through there's a danger of bringing that into the bivi with you. I still like the flexibility of tarp & bivi👍 All the best!
Thanks Des, and I fully agree. I was thinking about it after and came to the same conclusion. When its tipping down, you do need that space to organise and dry stuff, so don't think I'll be ditching the tarp completely for exactly those reasons.
The trouble with loads of kit, you need to cary it.
It may be better to keep kit to a minimum. And just take essential items for your stay or trip.
Seriously, ive been out in the woods with a bergen full of stuff, then went back to the van for the other bag of stuff for an overnighter, spent most of my time trying to find things! I only did it once.

That's a great question, and the answer is probably more complex than a simple comment reply could do justice. With that in mind, I'll get a video up over the next week or two covering some of the concerns a new wild camper might have along these lines. So thanks for the question and the idea for the video. Yeah, right next to the M5. I've just upgraded my audio equipment, so should have less problems filming there in future. Probably better to just avoid it all together.
OMG that’s ingenious idea but I wonder if other Bivvy bags are not wide or long enough. Such as OEX Bush Pro and Alpkit Hunka XL?
Not a terrible idea, but why put the roll mat down first? Putting the roll mat inside the bivi makes more sense to me
Thanks Steve. Bwirh regards to the roll mat. Whether it's inside or outside the bivi, the insulation properties are the same. But the rol mat is relatively cheap compared to the bivi. Outside, it provides a layer of protection against sharp objects. Inside it's an aid for sharp objects to puncture the gortex. Well that's my theory. Lol
You'll know when you puncture a bivvy bag why doing this makes sense
Hey wondering if the bag needs renewing the waterproofing? Some of my old waterproof clothes needed it, so figured I'd ask.
I believe that with Gortex, you just throw it in the tumble drier to replenish the waterproof qualities, I only ever do that once or twice a year after washing and not had any leak problems. I do believe that its not recommended to do this with Gortex products where adhesive has been used on seams as the heat can melt the glue. Thinking more about shoes that bivi-bags.

I agree. The last time I used it, I wrapped all the kit up in the basha in case it rained (it did) and just left it outside. A smaller tarp would have been better from a weight pov

It's a very interesting idea, turn a bivvy into a portable tent ⛺ i like it! That exposed entrance though.......how would you keep out ticks and mosquitoes???
I'm now thinking about this could perhaps attach some fly netting and velcro to the bivvy exterior and create a bug net to keep out insects
Bugs can be a pain. I found a good mozzy net that i can throw over the complete set up from the outside. If you take a look at the "camp rebuild" chapter in this video ruclips.net/video/Szpeeyr7eJQ/видео.html you'll see me fitting it over the top, then undoing the clamp to refit it on the outside of the mozzy net. Used it a couple of times in various flying insect infested areas without any major issues. Nothad any problems with ticks, although I do tend to liberally apply Treks anti insect spray.

I've never noticed condensation as an issue. I've mainly used the bivi on single nighters, but on the odd occasion where I have used it over multiple nights, I've not noticed if my blankets or bags are wet, same with the inside of the bag. I'm guessing that the Gortex of the bag does its job pretty well, but I never sleep in a manner where I'm breathing into the bag, I understand that's the biggest cause of condensation. I'll make a point of calling out the condensation, or lack of next time I take it out. Thanks for watching and commenting. Stay safe.

lol...I have used it in the rain and managed to keep the gear dry by wrapping everting up in a small tarp. Probably should have just put the tarp up

Hi Ryan, Thanks for watching. The poles are Vango Incas. I used to have a set of twist to lock poles, but when they get wet from dew in the mornings, they're really difficult to undo, so I prefer these cam locking ones now.

@@ryand141 Used this set up this weekend on Dartmoor, Had rain in the morning but stayed dry inside. I wrapped the rest of my gear in the basha and just left it outside.

Keep coming back to this video. Just out of curiosity, what cup do you use for the stove you have? It seems like it needs a big cooking pot. Do you know the min diameter it can hold (the smallest cup). Thx again.

Thanks for giving it a go. It was filmed before I could afford to buy any mics, so was reliant on the standard audio from the GoPro.
My newest video was filmed in the same location, but with mics, and I put the audio through some noise reducing software. Sounds a lot cleaner, but the AI tries to interpret the wind as Chinese.
I'd be interested in how you think it compares.
