I went ahead and bought masking tape after watching this video, promptly applied it to my my DZ60 PCB in a tofu60 case, and I can confirm it does add a bunch of thockiness to it! Switches sound deeper for some reason, and it was particularly noticeable for me as I use Boba U4Ts with a brass plate which has sounded really high pitched for me so far as I was building it, and this tape mod has changed everything for the better for me. Thank you so much for this! I was looking for that last little thing to make this keyboard truly my own, and this is it! Sound wise it's just perfect now, thanks again and have a great day!
yes, this mod is work, im using electrical tape, and whollaaaa, my outemu black with 205 g0 sounds more thockier and less clacky. or 50/50. suprisingly good.
Love this mod! I can finally end the constant tinkering (as fun as it was) with my gh60 trying to chase a tasteful, consistent sound profile. I poured my own silicone dampener for the PSD60 case, switched to a polycarb plate, added foam between plate and pcb, and used o-rings for the side standoffs; yet still had a bit of hollowness in row 2 and the tape mod fixed it!
more people need to use this mod. really... I'm using a cheap Redragon K630 with outemu browns. I used this mod combined with a double layer packaging foam in the case. The difference this mod made is crazy, I didn't even lube my switches, but they sound sooooooo good. It sounds really deep now, and did I mention I'm using stock outemu browns? Seriously, this mod is so good.
Huge thanks mate! I just did this to my Tofu65 on both the case and the PCB, along with some o-rings on the standoffs and some 3M Thinsulate and the sound profile is amazing and exactly what I was after.
Just did that to a board that is known to be "pingy" right out of the box (Corsair K65 RGB Mini). I had already added foam to the bottom of the case which got rid of a significant amount of the ping, particularly from the keys with stabs on them. Added 3 layers of painters tape to the back of the PCB and it suddenly became a case of Keyboards: Return of the Ping (it was actually even louder than the ping when the board was stock with no foam inside). Quickly removed it and the board now comes back to being a quiet typer again.
You da man lol works perfectly on the bekenko imo it's probably the best 60 you can get for under 200 when you mod it the thing is just absolutely nuts the clack it has the tape mod is perfect I had plenty of high end boards but I think this little thing is so impressive and with the tape mod it is so good
Hey I know this comment is crazy old but I did the same mod on my GMMK Pro with 3 layers of standard painters/masking tape does your pcb still work after two years because I got a bit worried after I saw that some of the tape got glossy and thought it might be overheating or sth
Okay after thinking about this mod I’ve come up with a theory about how this mod works. When I looked up on Blacksimon’s keyboard google doc about sound I noticed something about pcb thickness. Thicker pcbs tend to have much deeper sound. My guess would be that adding tape absorbs that pcb to air/case vibration, especially when done with soft tape, leading to a similar effect, especially since the tape is making direct contact. I might be entirely wrong here but right now I can’t think of any other explanation.
@@oTEMPE5To that’s an observation if I ever seen one. I guess if we were to test this we’d have to first test the pcb out of the case to account for case acoustics though. Another thought could be that since the tape is connected via adhesive, and doesn’t have nearly as a secure connection to the pcb compared to simply having a thicker pcb, that might play a role into it. Similar to how the ball bearing mod doesn’t fully replicate the sound of a pole bottom out switch in the same way since the vibrations aren’t transferred as well between the ball bearing and the switch unless it’s friction fit in. I’ve done the mod with packaging tape before, and noticed similar results compared to using a paper based tape, so that also leads me to believe that the adhesive plays a role into it.
i added three layer of masking tape and there's slight creamy sound on my brown switchs.. sickk!! although if i had an electric tape, i heard a combination of masking and electric tape makes the sounds as deep as possible
do I need to switch the tape every once a while? Being frank I can't remember the sound of first usage after the tape mod, compared to now (months later)
I went ahead and got myself a gk87 with boba u4t (unlubricated). I literally put butyl sound deadener and packaging foam in there, and I even cut out foam to put in between the plate and PCB. After all that, and getting the thocciest switches out there, I still didn't like the sound of it all that much. And then I went ahead and put masking tape under the PCB. Boom. That was the last little bit that I needed. God damn my keyboard sounds so much better now lol.
Very interesting. I think I might try this on my jelly and remove the PE foam to see if I can achieve a different sound to its marbly sound. Currently with no PE foam it just sounds muted due to the ungodly amount of flex cuts. Kinda wish they sold different pcbs with less flex cuts because not everyone wants them but I digress lol.
What if you try many types of tape I think there would be a sound different too, from what I heard transparent switches make a higher pitch noise what IF you try out the clear tape would it make the switches more higher pitch? I don't know I would try out this too cause it's cheap and easy to do.
I've done this to 3 of my budget keyboards and for some reason the o, p, [, ], keys all sound deep and loud asf compared to the other keys even though i put equal tape on the back of the pcb, the keys all sounded the same before but so different after, any advice?
Why wouldn't this tape be hard to remove compared to Duct Tape? I've seen people saying Gaffers, Painters, but need to make sure I purchase the right type to avoid any removing issues later on. Thank you for the help!
Do you still use this mod on your builds? is this safe for the kb PCB? I have a keychron Q1 which sounds pingy af but after doing this mod, it sounded more fuller and marbly. It's my first time using this mod on any of my KBs. Does this damage to the PCB in the long run? Do you recommend changing the tape after a certain amount of time? I hope you could answer these questions.
I'm using a masking tape. I tried one layer and two layers. Tbh the one layer sounds deeper than the two layers, so i ended up using one layer. You can try it out yourself, find out which one you like.
I am sorta new at modding keyboards and I really want to do the tape mod, but my apex pro has a different pcb than most keyboards and I don't know if it will mess it up. So will it or will it not work?
can someone help me? i have a battery and switch and click said something about almost starting a fire while doing it so im a bit confused will anything happen to me keeb cuz i have a battery in mine and ive already dont this mod
if you use paper-made tape it won't short, just make sure is on the less sticky side of things so it won't pull any parts of the pcb off when you remove it, and you're golden!
keybored made a video in which he analyzed differnt foam thickness and acoustics and he says that thicker foams allow higher frequencies to pass through and thinner foams allow more bassy freqs to pass through so applying that here would mean thinner tape = slighly deepr sound. tempest himself says that he too believes that thicker doesn't equal deeper, but potentially the otehr way around.
