- Sofia Boutella and Chris Evans present the Oscar® for Sound Mixing to Kevin O'Connell, Andy Wright, Robert Mackenzie and Peter Grace for "Hacksaw Ridge" at the 89th Oscars® in 2017.
The sad truth is that, unlike with Leonardo DiCaprio "finally" winning an Oscar on his sixth overall nomination, there won’t be any ecstatic reaction videos of people watching Kevin O’Connell finally winning an Oscar on his 21st Best Sound Mixing nomination. *Not a single one. :(*
leo's win reactions are incomparable
now if deakins wins, let's see how people would react
*I sadly doubt that anyone will care. :(*
I would give a shit.
Frankly, that doesn't really surprise me because A. DiCaprio's win was pretty much a given; no one expected Kevin O'Connell to win and B. The Sound Mixing category is a minor one compared to the acting categories.
@@sorenthefilmbrony It's not a minor one in the eyes of the Academy which is why the Oscar statue is identical in size and every other way for every category. And I for one would not want to watch actors with no sound coming out of their mouths.
Hacksaw Ridge is such an inspiring movie, it is my favorite movie of all time. Desmond Doss was such a courageous man who trusted the Lord with all of his heart, he was able to save so many lives during his service. May he rest in peace for all the good he has done on the battlefield and for the church
Way to go, Kevin. Best win of the night for me, seeing a guy who had consistently been putting in great work over the years finally getting his due.
Roger Deakins, you're next.
90th Oscars Update: HE WON!!!!!!
Henry Barnill Hopefully for Blade Runner 2049. If only he won.
Blade Runner 2049. Fingers crossed!
Adam Dow Kevin O'Connell is the Roger Deakins of sound mixing.
Idunno. The Academy doesn't really do sci-fi.
Maybe Deakins will win though. After all they gave Gravity seven Oscars including Best Director.
*“You broke my streak."*
- Kevin O’Connell,
sound re-recording mixer,
accepting Best Sound Mixing for Hacksaw Ridge at the 89th Academy Awards (on his 21st overall nomination)
This is the 3rd consecutive Oscar ceremony Chris Evans has presented Sound Mixing and Sound Editing.
2015: Ennio Morricone finally wins an Oscar.
2016: Kevin O'Connell finally wins an Oscar.
October 06th, 2017: Blade Runner 2049 comes out. Cinematography by Roger Deakins.
It's time, guys.
Also, don't forget Leo DiCaprio and Viola Davis finally winning their respective first Oscars in 2015 and 2016 as well (I'd also add Kenneth Lonergan to 2016 as well). Additionally:
2014: Alexandre Desplat AND Julianne Moore finally winning theirs
2013: Emmanuel Lubezki finally winning his first (he was, alongside Roger Deakins, one of the most snubbed cinematographers prior to his win; this started the 3 in a row win streak) and not to mention Spike Jonze.
Paul Thomas Anderson has a total of zero Oscars, his new film comes out on Christmas so hopefully it's a double whammy next year.
i root for hoyte van hoytema's dunkirk, so...
Or to another SWEDISH cinematographer: Hoyte van Hoytema for Dunkirk!
Vincent Knight Yes
Incredible that Captain America and The mummy are delivering this award. I was expecting that "La La Land" won this category, yet im glad with this result and I will tell you the reason.
Kevin O´Connell is an extraordinary sound mixing engineer. Every work he was involved and i have the chance to experience it over the years is absolutely mindblowing and outstanding. And yet finally, for the very first time after been nominated 20 times in the academy awards, he has finally achieve his 21st nomination and his first victory in "Hacksaw Ridge".
But i felt emotional when she dedicated the award to her mother who passed away and i share my respects for him.
Also if someone is interested to know his work, here is a list of all his projects that were nominated by the Oscars that includes the year of the ceremony and the name of the film who defeated in the category for best sound mixing.
1° Terms of Endearment (1983) (lost to The Right Stuff)
2° Dune (1984) (lost to Amadeus)
3° Silverado (1985) (lost to Out of Africa)
4° Top Gun (1986) (lost to Platoon)
5° Black Rain (1989) (lost to Glory)
6° Days of Thunder (1990) (lost to Dances with Wolves)
7° A Few Good Men (1992) (lost to The Last of the Mohicans)
8° Crimson Tide (1995) (lost to Apollo 13)
9° Twister (1996) (lost to The English Patient)
10° The Rock (1996) (lost to The English Patient)
11° Con Air (1997) (lost to Titanic)
12° The Mask of Zorro (1998) (lost to Saving Private Ryan)
13° Armageddon (1998) (lost to Saving Private Ryan)
14° The Patriot (2000) (lost to Gladiator)
15° Pearl Harbor (2001) (lost to Black Hawk Down)
16° Spider-Man (2002) (lost to Chicago)
17° Spider-Man 2 (2004) (lost to Ray)
18° Memoirs of a Geisha (2005) (lost to King Kong)
19° Apocalypto (2006) (lost to Dreamgirls)
20° Transformers (2007) (lost to The Bourne Ultimatum)
All of these losses make sense except for perhaps The Rock. I'd argue that The English Patient only won all those Oscars because of the Weinsteins.
BlueFox94 in 1996, The rock and twister had great sound environment and still I cannot believe that "The English patient" took the award. For me the only award he should have won, would be for "Twister", "Armageddon", "The patriot", "Spiderman", " Pearl Harbor" and "Transformers"
He should've won for The Rock and Pearl Harbor
You can hear Chris Evan saying at 1:16 "It's about time" to Kevin O'Connell. Even he acknowledged the milestone.
Best speech of the night.
One of my favorite acceptance speeches of all time
I salute to you Kevin O'Connell
21 nominations maan
After 21 nominations, Kevin O'Connell finally won his first Oscar for "Hacksaw Ridge" in 2017. In addition to his Oscar win for "Hacksaw Ridge,"
Kevin O'Connell also won an Primetime Emmy for the miniseries "Lonesome
Dove" in 1989.
He made his breakthrough debut as an additional sound re-recording mixer on
Martin Rosen's 1978 adaptation of "Watership Down" along with Rick Kline for Warner Bros Pictures in the US/Canada and Columbia Pictures in other
countries throughout the world. It was mixed on the Judy Holliday Stage
at Sony Pictures Studios in Culver City, California, USA.
why is chris evans always presenting sound oscars lol
outstanding speech
Thomas Newman has to win Best Score and Amy Adams has to win Best Actress/Best Supporting Actress.
And Roger Deakins has to win best cinematography. 13 nominations and counting. 14 nominations for Thomas Newman.
Both yet to win. Hopefully they will win someday.
We don't yet. But we'll see how it goes. If not, try something else.
Chris Evans is like the Chivo of presenting Oscars for Sound Editing and Sound Mixing 3 in a row like Chivo winning 3 Oscars in a row for Cinematography.
I LITERALLY loose my WHOLE $#!7 when they announced the winner.😂😅
Now it's Roger Deakins and Thomas Newman's turn.
Deakins finally won for Blade Runner 2049.
SkywardPrimeGalaxy and again for 1917
finally kevin \o/

Hopefully, Roger Deakins will be next
Yep.
your wish is granted. TWICE!!!
TWENTY. ONE. NOMINATIONS? holy crap. I guess you could say that he earned it
it was wayyy long overdue
DaredevilZ he should have won back for Transformers in 2007 and for Spider man 2 in 2004.
@@ronaldmcdonald2817 Transformers? Maybe I guess
DaredevilZ Transformers isn’t a good film per say but the sound mixing is really great and overall I think it’s a lot better then the sound mixing in the Bourne ultimatum.
DaredevilZ Spider man 2 lost to ray and the sound mixing in ray is really bad. Have you seen Ray.
Beautiful speech
Should have won best picture.
or La La Land
Sale Darius Petru I loved La La Land but Hacksaw Ridge was more deserving. I just thought it was a better story and movie.
I want "Ghost in the Shell" to be nominated
I think it deserves
Kyle Campbell we will find out
If only Greg P. Russell was one of the sound mixers on that team. Imagine how incredible that would've been.
Gabe Guarin NOTE: The nomination for “13 Hours” as it was originally announced on January 24, 2017, included four names: Greg P. Russell, Gary Summers, Jeffrey J. Haboush and Mac Ruth.
It was later determined that during the nominations phase Mr. Russell had violated Academy campaign regulations that prohibit telephone lobbying. Upon recommendation of the Sound Branch Executive Committee, the Academy's Board of Governors voted on February 23 to rescind the Sound Mixing nomination for Mr. Russell.

Besides features, he's back on television on the Sony lot where he was mixing today.
I wanted 'La La Land' to win. This movie is a joy to the ears from beginning to end.
Watching this 7 years later and I’m still disappointed that Rogue One didn’t win this award when it literally deserved it.
Nailed it, great speech

Thomas Newton is next after 14 nominations
You mean, Thomas Newman, eh?
Best director 2017: Christopher Nolan for "Dunkirk"
So glad that an aussie like Teresa Palmer was able to make it to the Oscars for her movie
2:15
Kevin sure does look like Gary Oldman
How the hell is Rogue One nominated?
Now it’s time for Diane Warren 0/11
And Glenn Close 0/7 to win
I'll be totally fair and square with you, Alexander. After being nominated 13 times, Miss Diane Warren
has finally won an honorary Oscar in 2023 at last. All thanks to another Oscar winner Cher.
21st time is the charm.
👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾
muito bom
Andrew Garfield shouldv'e won the Best Actor and Mel Gibson for best Director, best dam war movie so far...but i guess Hollywood hates God and the Military that much.
Nah, Andrew has much better performances
Cool
What is the name of that hosttess?
林政維 Sofia Boutella

Arrival should have won
Hacksaw Ridge deserved to win. Arrivals sound mixing is alright no where as good as Hacksaw Ridge.
cutie
la la land should have won
Or Rogue One
hacksaw re-mix near field bluray ridge. Pass will not buy this rubbish on bluray for yet another near field remix for home. What a load of sound rubbish films for 2016.
At least, Kevin O'Connell won his first Academy Award for "Hacksaw Ridge" in 2017. From 1978-present,
he and fellow Oscar nominee Rick Kline were now mixed together at Sony Pictures Studios nearby the Judy Holliday Stage
in Culver City, California.
