This works okay if you have a 20+ lb leader.......please try this with a 6 lb fluoro leader and let me know how that works for ya!?!?!?!
Sword Lord its tough but its doable. it take a more delicate approach thats for sure. of course having a 6lb leader often means knot size isnt much of an issue.
What i did for lighter tackle with 8lb leader was connect this knot to a butt section of 16lb then run the i off the 16lb. it gave me more stretch that i needed with the type of fishing i was doing at the time. It went like this 15lb braid to 16lb leader butt section 8ft long to a 6 ft piece of 8lb with a 8in section of 30lb shock leader for mouth abraision. it was a weird setup sure... but it was really fun. i was going ultra light with a 9 1/2ft 5wt fly blank i built into a spinning rod for beach snook because i was throwing 1/32oz kigs for them during glass minnow season and wanted to keep it lightweight but still useable.
So it can be done with 6lb leader... 6lb was the smallest i ever tried it with though and 15 lb braid. i didnt really do a lot of testing on it at that size though to be honest. just wanted to see if it could be done. first time i tried it i obviously broke the line cinching the knot. prob wouldve been better with a smaller braid.
The 16 lb mid-leader messes up the action. Plus More knots means more weak spots. Better off with an Albright.
jpvand1 true... it was just a system i used trying to blend light spinning with fly systems. (later on i switched to a knotless tapered leader and it was much more effective in this light tackle setup i was using but at $8 a leader for TRUE fluoro... i wanted to fiddle with it the old fashioned way first.)
once you practice this knot and test it the albright style knots will be rarely used. The only time i used an albright at all after this learning this knot was with my fly gear for rigging or for bluewater gear that didnt involve braid.
The Albright doesn't even come close to the strength of this knot, fact. I've tested all the well known braid to mono knots on a digital scale and none come close to the FG knot. If tied correctly, the FG knot will not break. The mono will more than likely break at the terminal knot at the hook or lure.
Really great abrasion resistance and though I've never put the Big Game line ruclips.net/user/postUgkxQ4x31pJVpClzhxzNFeILZYTW7Xbs7ZIF (any poundage) through an official test it always seems to break well above rated poundage. This line stretches a very good amount before it breaks and does well in saltwater too. Not the best line for a spinning reel in my opinion, especially if you're planning on using it for lures only due to it having a bit of memory but still a great line whether filling a spool, using as top shot or strictly for leader line. I've bought a bunch of Big game line in the past and plan on continuing to do so in the future.
I've been using the FG knot for salmon for a couple years now and it rocks.
I've never seen it tied like this, I'll have to give it a go.

This GT/FG knot is actually the best one Ive tried. It will even go through micro guides pretty easily. I also use long flouro leaders because Im always retying new lures on and can shrink up a leader pretty quick. So This knot always ends up in my spool and goes right through the level wind no problem. Thanks for the video

Thank you soo much for taking the time to share this vid! I've been along time bass fisherman, but only recently started using braid. I had been using a uni to uni knot but kept having the knot hang in the quides. Took me about an hour to get it down but well worth it. Put it to test today and landed a 10lb 2oz largemouth. Those are great scissors but they riust out too fast in our humid saltwater environment around here. I use freakin25 dolar owner scissors and have the same pair for 6 years. They arent cheap but they lasted long. (And I also use my good pliers...but those are $400... lol I dont reccommend them to just anyone.

And I used to use the FG but after reverse engineering the FG (and an uncountable amount of hours testing new types) I settled on this version since it appeared to have many benefits of the FG but not any of the downfalls of it. I also tried the melted knub of leader but personally found it too risky in weakening the braid as the flame got too close.
I just wish they would make tractor beams already!!!!!!!

jdleitner You're welcome. I agree... once a person gets how to tie it and actually tests it they will be unable to use any other knot. Anyone that claims an Albright or other knot is better has never tried this type of knot, or if they did they tied it incorrectly.

I used this knot this past August 2015. I had a large tuna on for more than 35 minutes. At some point my mind went to the knot and it gave me some apprehension. However, the knot held perfectly and thereafter held for several smaller tuna. I now have confidence in this great knot. This is now my go to knot for connecting braid to flourocarbon.

Great knot! Clear and concise video. Got it down the first try. Used it to attach a 30 lb. Spider wire to a 60 lb. Cajun Red Lightening and it works great. Got stuck on a water soaked branch while fishing for wolf fish in a local dam and it dragged that sucker right out! Very tight connection and glides smoothly through my rod guides. This is now my favorite knot. Thanks for the upload!

Hey Matt, I just watched your video and the knot is awesome. I just tied it several times...I also just read your story. I feel for you brother, I live to fish myself. I have had it taken from me this year due to health complications of 2 family members. I'm not complaining, I chose and needed to be here with them, it was the only choice for me...Family first. I can't imagine the range of emotions you have gone through...You're in my families prayers and miracles do happen. You are undoubtedly a very strong person...Keep fighting!!!

You are a hero. I could not do what you do and still keep a smile on my face. In fact it led me to pretty much push everyone that cares for me out of my life. I hate seeing that look of sadness within the depths of their eyes as they try to hide it behind a smile.
I never realized the cost of having so many people love me and I never considered the amount of joy that I would give them could actually backfire by causing them so much pain once the joy became sadness from me losing my health.
Few are aware of the depth of my health issues. I try to paint a far prettier picture than the reality of what it is. It is easier to talk to strangers than anyone I know in these matters. For if the few people in my life knew, they would suffer even more so. And for you to do what you are doing and sacrifice what you have in order to care for those you love, you have my greatest respect brother.
Be strong. And if you ever need some outside perspective on things, Im always here even if Im not always able to reply quickly, I will when I'm able to do so.

The best demo of this knot hands down. and I'm in the market for 4 jigging rods. I have 4 "Truth Sg" reels. I'd like something that will compliment their small profile. But can tackle AJ, and snapper.

Love this knot. I figured that the best way to try the knot strength was by jigging up a couple of AJ's. I'm a true believer that there is only one way to test certain things and that would be out in the field at least thats what the military taught me. lol Back to the knot it held up great to the AJ's and Black Fins. This is by far, the strongest knot that i've ever used in my angling life to connect braid to mono. This is a perfection. It had made it stronger because at the last part (the closing knot) is facing the braid and not the mono. Unbelievable! This type of connection is now my personal best! Thank you so much!

Just do everyone a favor and teach this knot to others. In time with enough practice it can be done in under 30 seconds, so that takes away people's biggest gripe on the knot. (We do live in an age where ten seconds seems too long to do anything hahahaa.)

I started using this knot down in Venice LA this year for tuna, AJ , grouper and big sharks-- I can honestly say that this is the toughest and smallest knot I have ever used. This knot goes through rollers as well as a mono to braid splice, but tied in a fraction of the time.
I usually finish my last knot (after two half hitches) with a double uni (pulling tight again) then melt the tip of the mono for a mushroom cap.

It was as if fishing for me was getting stale in a sense before this knot.
I could see a slow technological growth within the fishing industry, but it often seemed to be passed up by the world around it. And the tech advances that did come out, simply were not practical to myself, and many others (Like micro-guides, and the new generation super SUPERRRRRR braids that were coming out made a line to line connection a real pain in the arse. lol. )
I tried so very hard to invent and reinvent knots once I got my first sample of the Daiwa Samurai about 6 years ago. And while I loved every aspect of it on paper, it just couldnt connect well to leaders if I was using a 30lb braid to anything over a 20lb leader. I tried sooo many different creations. From connecting Doubled bimini's to tiny perfection loops via a cat paw method like a wind-on leader. I tried splicing the line to itself with heat. It was an insane 3-6 months of hundreds of trials... but all errors. lol.
In the beginning I was finishing it with half hitches followed by a uni myself. And for heavier lines I still will go that route. As well as the burning technique after a guy from California that was a huge tune fisherman showed me his particular knot (I cannot recall what it was at this time.) and I even used that.
The practical applications for this type of knot is mesmerizing. And adding your own personal twist to the knot is awesome, and I wish others would experiment more with it like you did in order to give it that extra oomph. Because in all honesty, I wouldnt have figured it out without the help of the people I was working with at the time, as well as a coworker named Mike that showed me the original concept for this type of knot (And yes... I said there was no way it was going to work just like so many others always do.) As well as the countless numbers of unnamed customers that would come in to the shop over the years and show me their techniques. I do not consider myself a smart man since my memory from concussions has always been so poor (which truly makes having the ridiculously high IQ I have an utter waste 99% of the time ) But things with fishing such as techniques and knots seemed to always stayed put in my brain. Basically... if it wasnt for fishing, I'd probably be a huge waste of flesh and bone lol... like freshwater gamefish hahaaaaaaa!

Trying this knot out today. Just tied it for the first time, much easier then other leader to braid knots I've tried. Got it on the first try. Now to see how it holds up for some fall bass!

Glad you guys like the knot. Perhaps call it the beautiful slim lol. The slim beauty was a knot my grandfather would use with dacron to mono and he learned it from an old salty guy in the Keys. Then it truly disappeared off the planet for a few decades. Flash forward to the middle 2000's and another knot came on the scene that they labeled the slim beauty. And although it was not the original slim beauty of yore (sorry been reading Game of Thrones books recently lol) it still brought the name back and took it as its own (even though it was a popular knot, it was still inferior to the knots most ppl used for braid to leader at the time IE the Uni-uni and the Albright.
So cal it whatever you will. But you might need to wait another 40 years until it can be renamed the slim beauty. lol. It is simply ...well... a simplified FG/GT type of knot. I still wonder why they do so much extra work when tying the FG's today. I guess they have never tried to simplify the knot itself.

Joaquim Rodrigues Thanks! Im really glad you liked it. Theres several ways of tying it so try a few and see what works best for you. I tied it differently than the way i show in this video but after teaching it to a lot of ppl this just seemed to be the easiest way for most people to grasp.

Id love to see someone create a better knot than the FG/GT style of knots. (Quantum line fusion of the molecular structure might be the only way you can make a better connection hahaha but I highly dout that will happen in our lifetime.)

Been tying this knot all spring and summer for braid to floro. hasn't failed once. It's easy to teach to others and as you mentioned in your video pretty easy to tie in the bumps. I've also started using it on my fly rod and works just fine.

BUT I must know, what connection are you using it for on your flyrod? Backing to the butt? I fish saltwater so we actually have fish take out a lot of backing on occasion and the only line Im able to do this with is my 80# braid (Saltiga dendo braid, It changes colors every meter and helps me judge distance and is the same size as standard 30# backing.) to a full intermediate clear line on my 12wt
Every time Ive tried different braids, gelspuns, and dacron backings to a floating line or sink tip it has just pulled the coating off the core.
(FYI to saltwater fishermen who fish tarpon around bridges with 12wt rods.... try using different 30 yard sections of oversized mono like 130# (It depends on the blanks taper. I use a specialty blank that is 8ft4in long around bridges because my casts are never needed over 50ft and I need to put upwards of 30lb pressure on the fish at times.) instead of a 70 dollar fly line. It takes some getting used to, but dear lawd you save a bundle by the end of the summer.)
Definitely let me know what application for fly fishing and how you are using it. I gave up on trying to find a way after turning a few fly lines into shooting heads lol.

I know over 60 different fishing knots. (8 different ones for braid to leader and this one dominates the next 7 ..combined.)
I was considering doing more updated versions of these videos with a more professional feel (as well as HD.)
However,I think this one is doing the job without the fancy high tech 1080 rez and since I was using a generic Kodak camera I got for $50 and it still generated this much hype kind of makes me proud that the people like you focus more on content than the fancy packaging it is placed within.

That is the same as the FG knot I learned a while back, just a different style of tying it. With the FG knot you wrap the leader around the mainline 20x in a criss crosscross pattern while mainline is tight. Good job on the tutorial. 👍

I've found this knot to work between absolutely any size braid to leader connection. I learnt from this video and at first I couldn't get it to tighten down perfectly but I found as long as when doing the wraps you are careful to tighten it down as tight as possible so there's no slack and it cinches up nicely.If your careful to do this it cinches perfectly every time. It's now the only knot I use. Excellent video I couldn't learn this knot on any other video.

This knot was easy for me to learn, but I teach ropes and knots for fire/rescue and I am an avid fisherman. I have used this knot for over a year now in NE Florida fishing mainly in the estuaries, St John's River and ICWW for Bull Reds, Trout, Tarpon, Flounder, Sheepshead and other species along this stretch of water. I find this knot to be exceptionally smooth gliding through the rod eyes allowing great casting. Although it is easy to tie, I find it necessary for me to use gloves to prevent cutting my hands when pulling it tight. I use either 20 or 30 lb braid to 50 to 80 lb fluorocarbon leader and then step the leader down to 20 to 30 lb tippet for all but Tarpon. It is a bit time consuming for re-rigging but I can do it in about 5 minutes. Thanks for showing me this one. I hope you are doing well.

Awesome knot and passes through rod tip guides & reel without bother.
I softbait/casting all the time & used to have trouble, or catches on small top guide which causes braid to tangle on lower guides or reel.

Good way to show the GT or the FG knot....I do around 40 to 50 rounds of both instead of the 12 of both (tag end and the main line) that you have demonstrated as I go after the beasts..... use 65 lb sufix on a 100 lb leader, have even done the same on 80 lb line on 150lb leader, no problem...knot never breaks even on GTs and big fishes.....great knot and flies through the guides
Used this knot all season casting 4 0z up to 9 oz swimbaits for lings, not one failure when pulling on a lingcog. The guys I fished with were hesitant until I snagged bottom, I snapped 30 lb. Flouro line and up came the line the connection still intact, I had snapped off about 5 feet below the connection using a 15' of top shot. I routinely only use one 25' top shot of flouro tied on the night before all day with no fear of failure after my first couple of fish.

i have never had a slip off with this knot before, 30lb braid to 40lb flouro leader. largest fish 27kg Mekong on 7-9kg drag on a spinner.
its the ONLY knot i use to tie the leaders on. never fails me :)

I was shown this last year on a boat in Brooklyn. Never used it till lately. The knot never separates if done correctly

Just did my first gt knot using your video. And took a few try but got it on the 3rd try. Amazing knot.

nwsearle90 Then I feel like this knot accomplished something. I felt the same way upon seeing this knot the first time. It changed everything from my line, to my rod guides. It also made me downsize the number of rods I needed for different situations. I used to carry at least 5 rods with me for different applications. So with the invention of the super-superbraids like the Samurai, I was able to downsize my gear for species like Tarpon and cobia, and still get the job done in an equal amount of time. Now get out there and rip lips for me!

This is the version I originally learned. I tweaked it with the help from others into what I do in the video above.
You had me all kinds of excited... BAD TOADY!!!! lol.
I guess its up to the person to decide whats best for them. I have giant hands and find it easier to wrap the braid rather than the fluoro. After all the fluoro is much stiffer and has much more memory so a slip of the fingers and it tends to unravel. (If your fluoro isnt stiff then it isnt fluoro, but rather a blend.)
