@@ssmith23323 You are welcome Mate. I'm constantly looking for quicker better methods to improve myself on the Famouse FG. So far I like these two methods the best. The Only way to better onesself is keep practising it and follow the Instructions closely.
I tied an FG knot using this tutorial today and went fishing. Got snagged three times, and had to break off the line. Each time, the FG knot held and I kept my leader (farewell, brave lures, I loved thee well). Also caught some fish. In other words, this tutorial is great. Just be careful with closing the knot - you gotta pull the last hitch knot down slowly so it closes at the FG knot and not above it.
Such an amazing contribution to our industry. I'm not a salt guy, but a leader knot is a leader knot, and I want to know I'm tying the strongest knot, and doing it properly. These videos are absolutely priceless. Thank you for all you've done for our sport!
For anyone struggling, what helped me was realizing that I needed to pull the leader line straight after every loop. That seems to be the key, rather than pulling the braid tight at all times. Hope this helps.
I find that you can feel it “click” into place kinda when you do it. If I don’t feel that sensation of it sort of falling into place I stop and make sure I do it again. That and pulling the absolute living daylights out of it once it’s fully wrapped.
You're pulling too hard on your mono. Really slow down and watch the braid move into neat little stacks after each turn of the mono and you will understand it much more. I'm assuming you are wrapping the mono up because the angle you're holding the mono is bunching up the braid in weird ways. It should almost be effortless other than the tension on your pinkey.
Yeah didn’t realize that at first but was already 4 or 5 times in but once I got finished i pulled the crap out of and it made a click and I thought ether it’s in place or bout to fall apart
So nice to learn from someone who knows his topic, explains it clearly and does it without all the self-promoting hype and drama that's all too common on RUclips these days. Thank you for your excellent videos!
I, like a lot of others who posted, was intimidated by this knot. I tried tying after watching a few other videos, and I was less than successful. After seeing this video, I have tied it SEVERAL times over the past few days, and haven’t had a single failure. Thank you for sharing
A hitch is not a knot, it's technically a hitch. Boy Scouts 101. Multiple wraps on the "half-hitch" become a Surgeon's knot. This is the best demo of tying the FG knot I've seen. Great!
Still appreciating this video a couple years later for my annual tuna trip. Thanks much for this one. Took a somewhat complex knot and simplified it while emphasizing the important components.
I was always intimidated by the complexity of the FG knot. I always thought there had to be an easier way. Now this seems worth trying. Thank you for showing me the way.
Man this is the best video i've seen on the FG. I've watched a bunch and was so confused I was like F that. I fish creeks for smallmouth and I would get hung and uni would snap trying to free it. Tried this yesterday and pulled in a huge branch through current and knot held. Thank you for dumbing it down
Just learned this knot from this video the other day! It’s was much easier than I expected. Idk if you have ever heard of this analogy but the FG knot is a lot like a Chinese finger trap. It tightens around the knot putting consistent pressure on the leader.
After failing to tie an FG knot using 6lb braid and watching 2 other videos I was able to successfully tie an FG knot on the first try using Luke's method shown here. The tip from seatbelt6739 on keeping the leader line taut was helpful too. I later tested the new FG knot after snagging a couple jigs on the river and the line broke at the jig and the FG knot held. Caught a 20" steelhead later on the same mainline. Thanks Luke! 👍
I really want to learn this knot . I just started using braid and have the Alberto knot tied , I hear the FG is way better Just tried it and the way you showed was super easy ! Had it done in no time !

The 4 loop and 2 loop half hitch may keep me using this not. I’ve always liked it and tied it easily but my ends come apart after casting through my guides for a while. We’ll see how this finish set up holds up!
I have tied this knot for years, holding the braid in my teeth. its hard when your older and the line is to close to your eyes and your are wearing sunglasses. This is an awesome tip. Thanks again Luke!
I had been using a different knot for years that beat the hell out of my guides. This is a phenomenal knot and such a simple way to tie it. I hooked a 100+ lb tarpon while fishing for snapper on the dock with my kids. The hook straightened before this knot gave way.
Luke - i dreaded the FG knot because when tying thin braids to thin leaders i found the FG knot a very finicky one and reverted to the Albright and Alberto knots. Also there are even some tools - eg from Daichi to help tie this knot which i looked at and thought why buy this tool - when it still looks finicky. But your method was easy and worked well. Thanks for brilliant and quick and easy method and fabulous hints that works well to get this knot tied without hassle
Brilliant! I've been using a double uni knot for years, but now favour this knot. Mainly because i fish for wrasse in the u.k and have grown tired of pulling for a break when snagged only to loose everything each time. With the fg knot if i pull for a break the knot on my hook goes first 95 % of the time, meaning i get all of my leader back minus a few inches. Whereas with a double uni, i lose everything and just wind in a small knot at the end of my braid. I'll never go back to a double uni
Just tied it 3x’s on my reels. It’s easy. One last step that I did was to wrap the leader around my foot on the ground and pull up on the braid. Now I trust it. Thx.
Just tied my first one! Looks pretty damn good! Thanks for this video. I've been using double barrel swivels for leaders for years (which isn't bad for a spinning lure set up) but it was limiting me to only having 16 inch leaders before it got too weird to cast! This allows me so much more leader, and I can drop swivels and directly tie to lures! Life saver!
Great video Luke, thanks. A guide friend of mine taught me similar, but he makes an overhand loop knot in the braid on to the handle of the reel to keep tension. He also alternates the half hitches one direction and then the other and finishes with the 4 turn half hitch. I have been practicing but find that a leader line slips through my fingers of my left hand. Maybe putting too much tension on the leader line? Also I find when I am done after the locking 2 half hitches, pulling down really tight is critical. That way I can trim the excess leader very very close and when you tie the half hitches there is no tiny tag popping through later. I have also found, with practice, I know how long my knot is going to be. This eliminates excess waste of fluorocarbon. I'm cutting off less than 2 inches of flouro. One more thing, I can wind on about 20' of leader line because this knot goes through the guides easily. For bottom fishing when you break off, just retie on the remaining leader and you're back in business in no time. This knot doesn't break, the leader line will. Hope this helps someone. Definitely need to practice more but this is a great method and knot. Thanks Luke.
I'm very skeptical when someone claims that their way of tieing the FG knot is the "easiest". I found this video to be the EASIEST by far compared to every other video out there. Thank you.
I actually put a loop into my braid and hook it to my reel handle. I then turn the spool and preload the line with the rod flex. I do this moslty when on the boat and the rod is in the rod holder. Super easy to do on the boat.
Thank you!! I got it on my first try, and it was the fastest I've ever done braid to mono. You made it click in my head, like, yeah that makes perfect sense. Well done!
Hmm, you lost me after “go around once” my eyes couldn’t make out what the heck just happened haha I saw you put the leader line over and that was it loll
This is the best video on how to tie the FG knot and I have seen them all trust me! Thank you sir very much. I can finally tie this darn knot. I am so happy now.
This is an amazing knot! Been using it for a few weeks/months and I'll never go back to a double uni. However, it is a P.I.T.A. to tie, regardless of what our friend here is saying - but, totally worth the aggravation. The most challenging part is the tension on the braid - it's an absolute must - and you need, well, I do, need both hands. I use an 18" of PVC pipe wrapped with electrical tape and wrap my braid tag end around it, and sit on it. It works well for me. Thanks for the video!
To get a tight weave I use a 2oz lead weight for the tension. then you have both hands free and consistent tension., It helps keep everything under control and the wraps tight and aligned.
Thanks for being quick and to the point. This is the 3rd video I looked up for this knot but quit the first 2 because they wanted to talk 10 minutes before showing how to tie the knot. I never saw them demonstrate the knot.
I have been watching y'all from the beginning. I can honestly say that you have made it so much less intimidating to fish saltwater for the first time. All of the info is absolutely on the money and I am still hunting my 40" Snook but credit you in advance for the fish of a lifetime.
This has got to be the best way to tie this knot. I go an extra step and melt the end of the mono with a lighter until it creates a little bead so there's no chance for the mono to slip out of the knot and it has never failed me.
@@thefisherman0074 super glue is very brittle so I'm not sold you are actually helping secure the knot. Of course your experience definitely supports your idea. Thx for sharing it. Hmmmm, added thought. Could the super glue be basically melting/welding the knot. Not enough to weaken the knot but maybe enough to actually increase the bond?
Cheers for that. My son and I are just starting to use braided line with leaders. This knot is so simple its taken a little bit of the fear out of it. We will be using our braded line in the next couple of days so we will use this knot. Cheers for your time. Its very worth while for us. I was actually going to make a loop with the braided and then put the leader through the loop and then tie the standard knot you use for hooks but it would limit the size of my leader because the knot wouldn't slim through the eyes. Still learning.
hey hey really enjoying your vids. they really helped me become a better angler. even after 20 years of me fishing u guys share tips and tricks i didn't know. thank so much especially for all those line and knots tests. love it
16 wraps? I use 15lb braid to 10lb fluro mostly, how many wraps do you suggest? Thanks for the video. Most of them, they have their thumbs in the way. I believe its doable now.
FG is my go to for line to leader now for the lsst few yeats, that's the best way to do the FG I've seen yet, will give this method a crack. Thanks for the vid 👍
Hi! I'm from Poland and I can truly say it can be used for ultralight too! I use 0.06mm braid and 0.20mm leader. I caught one asp which has 68cm in the river and the knot didn't break.
I am a bass fisherman with micro rings on my rod. Finding a Braid to Floro knot has been very very difficult where the knot does not get caught on the micro eyelets. THIS IS IT!!! and like you said its not difficult if done exactly like you show here. The end knot is very slim and sleek, wraps around spool just fine and through all eyelets without me noticing. It not only does not get hung but I have to look to see where FG knot actually ! Thank You!!!!!!!!
I appreciate this video as it does make tying the FG knot easier. I do still find the FG knot more difficult to tie as the braid and fluorcarbon (leader) go down in size, and I lose confidence in accomplishing a proper knot. On my freshwater spinning outfits I'm typically running 10-15lb braid to 8lb fluorocarbon (drop shot/finesse applications). I have been using the Albright knot with great success and almost as small as the FG. I would prefer the FG, but with the smaller lines I'm having difficulty gaining confidence in my knot even practicing off the water.
I’ve watched a dozen videos on the FG Knot, and I have to say your’s is the very best over all. It’s was to see, and you give a excellent display and explanation of what you’re doing Thanks 👍🏽🔥
Great knot, and looks easy to tie. I can also see using a triple fisherman's knot instead of the half hitches, so the brad tag comes out parallel. Though I doubt the braid tag would have much effect on casting.
I haven't tried it like this yet, but I do love the way this was filmed and explained so clearly. Years ago I could never figure out the knot but I'm gonna try this way soon and hopefully I can actually get one tied lol.
Thanks for making time to leave the comment. The strength of the FG knot is determined by the coils, and the finish is all about making sure the coils just stay in place. So the Rizzuto finish certainly can help ensure that the coils don't come undone. I still stick with the basic half hitch knots because they are much easier to tie and they haven't failed me yet.
This is the best method I have tried. Very uniform loops and they bite into the leader quick smart when pulled tight. For the ultimate challenge, I tried it with 15lb mono to 15lb braid and it worked a treat even in these fine lines. It's great for people who need reading glasses because you can see what's going on in front of you. It's really hard to see what's going on with the 'braid in the teeth' method. It's much quicker and more reliable than the 'pinch' method because you can see the loops forming and adjust tension as you go. Thankyou very much for sharing this method. 10/10 :)
What about them? It still works great! Lol I primarily bass fish and I use this all the way down to 6lb seaguar fluorocarbon for my drop shot rigs often. Works fantastic for me personally.
But now that I think about it. Disclaimer. This I feel seems obvious but anyway, be cautious of when you are cinching the knot down at the end, slow steady pressure, if ya yank the smaller lines or pull too hard it'll break anyway haha.
I almost gave up on the FG knot until I saw this - absolutely the easiest way to tie it. I still I have no idea why it works, but it’s my go-to for braid-to-flouro nonetheless. Thanks Luke!
Thanks for the video. I fish light most of the time so I've been happy with the double uni. Just got a baitcaster loaded with 30lb braid and realised I'd need an FG if I wanted any casting distance. This technique I found easy enough that I'm going to give it a try with my 6lb and 15lb leaders next time I tie them.
Luke, I used your prior video for the Alberto knot, and have used it for the last couple of years with much success. Now I'm not so intimidated to try the FG, so thanks AGAIN! Also after seeing your tests of mono vs fluoro , do you have to change anything when using the FG knot on braid - mono connection?
100% the truth here. Just got done trying to tie up some new leaders w much lighter braid than I normally use and they kept breaking w Albright, GT, Uni to uni...didnt matter...swtiched to this and rock solid. Great video thanks.
In the years the prison Alcatraz was open, the warden made an oath to all the prisoners that he would let any convict who could figure out how to tie this knot even watching a video on it, go free. No one ever got out.
@@karlstokes874 I finally got it figured out.. The knot is awesome. Pulled in several sharks from 6-4 ft. long using the FG knot connecting my main line to leader!
November 2024: Converted all my rods to braid/ flouro leader using this video. Ended up breaking a line due to a backlash. Luckily, I was able to fish the lure out. Got the lure back to the bank and guess what...the FG knot I tied using this video was still holding strong. Brand new 30lb. braid broke before this FG knot did - and the knot was tied by an FG knot newbie using just this video.
Link at bottom of this page has an asterisk by *FG knot. Within the. The * notes the FG knot to be used only if leader is stronger than main line. Really??
That's just common knowledge, I don't know too many people who use a leader that is weaker than their main line. Braid is also thinner which means that even if your leader is the same breaking strength as your braid, the FG knot will still work.
Thanks Luke! I’ve been putting off learning this knot till now. I can’t believe it is this easy! Wow even 40 lb leader is smooth thru the guides. FG = Freaking Great!
This method worked great. I was able to put 6 lb. braid to 4 lb.e carbon. Only took me a few practices the hardest part was trimming the carbon close without nicking the knot. Ordered a pair of cheap jewelers glasses to make it easier. If a 68 year old can do such small line this method anyone can do it. Thanks for the great video.

Don’t ever get rid of this video. I have this particular one saved in my favorites 😎
Thanks for making time to post the nice comment! We're glad to see that you like this FG knot video.
Thanks from New Zealand! By far the easiest video to learn from
Genuine thank you from the bottom of my live well sir 🙏🏻
Thanks for being quick and to the point. This is the 3rd video I looked up for this knot but quit the first 2 because they wanted to talk 10 minutes before showing how to tie the knot. I never saw them demonstrate the knot.
I always have best results with a little tension on the leader line and I found that hard trying this method
I have been watching y'all from the beginning. I can honestly say that you have made it so much less intimidating to fish saltwater for the first time. All of the info is absolutely on the money and I am still hunting my 40" Snook but credit you in advance for the fish of a lifetime.
Learned this a week ago. Failed a couple of times. But I can now do this with my eyes closed. Thank you Salt Strong.
This has got to be the best way to tie this knot. I go an extra step and melt the end of the mono with a lighter until it creates a little bead so there's no chance for the mono to slip out of the knot and it has never failed me.
If your fg ever slips at all it has technically failed.
Just use super glue then but the fg knot shouldn’t be slipping
@@thefisherman0074 super glue is very brittle so I'm not sold you are actually helping secure the knot. Of course your experience definitely supports your idea. Thx for sharing it.
Hmmmm, added thought. Could the super glue be basically melting/welding the knot. Not enough to weaken the knot but maybe enough to actually increase the bond?
... "creates a little bead" ... The main reason for this knot is to have it as SMOOTH as possible.
.
Glad we could help! This knot is what we recommend for all experience levels!
hey hey really enjoying your vids. they really helped me become a better angler. even after 20 years of me fishing u guys share tips and tricks i didn't know. thank so much especially for all those line and knots tests. love it
Mate this is the best tutorial for the fg I have seen! Thank you
The first wrap should start towards the tag end. The last wrap towards the main line. This will ensure that the first half hitch holds.
I make it that way so the firs half hitch locks harder when you tighten te leader and the main line.
@@lolz9418 yes that is correct
16 wraps? I use 15lb braid to 10lb fluro mostly, how many wraps do you suggest? Thanks for the video. Most of them, they have their thumbs in the way. I believe its doable now.
I do 20 wraps and 30 wraps on heavier line 30lbs
I totally agree sir! And i do 20 wraps on my 10lbs braid and 12lbs leaderline
FG is my go to for line to leader now for the lsst few yeats, that's the best way to do the FG I've seen yet, will give this method a crack. Thanks for the vid 👍
Thanks for checking it out!
I viewed this knott from many sites but this is the best site. Very easy
If I'm in my boat, I wrap it around my big toe to create tension. Hey, works lol!
I’ve watched a dozen videos on the FG Knot, and I have to say your’s is the very best over all. It’s was to see, and you give a excellent display and explanation of what you’re doing
Thanks 👍🏽🔥
Thank you for watching!
Great knot, and looks easy to tie. I can also see using a triple fisherman's knot instead of the half hitches, so the brad tag comes out parallel. Though I doubt the braid tag would have much effect on casting.
By far the best and most concise video on this knot and your technique is exceptional. Thank you!
Glad it was helpful!
I haven't tried it like this yet, but I do love the way this was filmed and explained so clearly. Years ago I could never figure out the knot but I'm gonna try this way soon and hopefully I can actually get one tied lol.
So I'm tying this on some 10-lb fluoro and 20-lb braid, and my fluorocarbon keeps pulling out of the coils without tightening at all.
Same
Works on power pro, not so much on spider wire
Genius. I've tried a bunch of methods and this is both the easiest and most consistent.
Great to hear!
I recommend finishing it off with the rizzutto
Thanks for making time to leave the comment. The strength of the FG knot is determined by the coils, and the finish is all about making sure the coils just stay in place. So the Rizzuto finish certainly can help ensure that the coils don't come undone. I still stick with the basic half hitch knots because they are much easier to tie and they haven't failed me yet.
@@Saltstrong yeah i agree same with me...ive done with and without the Rizzutto...didnt make a difference.
100% agree. Search youtube for "fg rizzuto" for a better video. Also, IGFA does NOT rate this as the strongest knot.
@@snookman9920 isn't it the GT knot?
Salt Strong The Rizzuto finish is the easier part of the knot.
I just tied it in 25 seconds thats how quick your method is. Thanks i appreciate it so much and God Bless and tight lines out there
Awesome! Loved this way of tying the FG. I struggled with it, but knot any more🤪
This is the best method I have tried. 10/10 :)
That's a huge leader size. What about 6 to 8lb leaders?
What about them? It still works great! Lol I primarily bass fish and I use this all the way down to 6lb seaguar fluorocarbon for my drop shot rigs often. Works fantastic for me personally.
But now that I think about it. Disclaimer. This I feel seems obvious but anyway, be cautious of when you are cinching the knot down at the end, slow steady pressure, if ya yank the smaller lines or pull too hard it'll break anyway haha.
Absolutely perfect 👍
Just used this method to tie on 50lb braid to my leader.
Nailed it first go…thanks for posting.
Glad it helped
9 out of dentists approve of this method. 😂😂😂
Haha!!! Very true.
Speaking of dentists, some people have 32 teeth, some have 2, it's simple meth!!!
@@donisenhart4123 smh my head, some people are so bad at meth.
I almost gave up on the FG knot until I saw this - absolutely the easiest way to tie it. I still I have no idea why it works, but it’s my go-to for braid-to-flouro nonetheless. Thanks Luke!
Glad it helped! Thanks for watching!
Instructions unclear. Tip of pinky fell off after turning purple, then black. Day 4, and it’s starting to stink.
Korni
Thanks for the video. I fish light most of the time so I've been happy with the double uni. Just got a baitcaster loaded with 30lb braid and realised I'd need an FG if I wanted any casting distance. This technique I found easy enough that I'm going to give it a try with my 6lb and 15lb leaders next time I tie them.
Glad you found this helpful!
Luke, I used your prior video for the Alberto knot, and have used it for the last couple of years with much success. Now I'm not so intimidated to try the FG, so thanks AGAIN! Also after seeing your tests of mono vs fluoro , do you have to change anything when using the FG knot on braid - mono connection?
nah mate same knot
100% the truth here. Just got done trying to tie up some new leaders w much lighter braid than I normally use and they kept breaking w Albright, GT, Uni to uni...didnt matter...swtiched to this and rock solid. Great video thanks.
I'm glad to see that you enjoyed this FG knot video!
In the years the prison Alcatraz was open, the warden made an oath to all the prisoners that he would let any convict who could figure out how to tie this knot even watching a video on it, go free. No one ever got out.
After 10 videos and images I finally figured FG knot. Thank you so much! Love from Thailand
Well I tie some decent knots. When I follow you're instructions. I get a big wad of mono over braid. What am I doing wrong.
Sounds like you’re not pulling the leader line taught after each wrap around the braid.
@@karlstokes874 I finally got it figured out.. The knot is awesome. Pulled in several sharks from 6-4 ft. long using the FG knot connecting my main line to leader!
@@franktallman1615 excellent news that buddy.
Welcome to the club!

@@jimmyrecard6021 Not in the bass fishing world, the leader is always less lb test than the braid main line.
I've been tying this knot for a while but the other day it kicked my butt. Thanks for the video, I'm gonna give it a go tomorrow
Good luck!
Great knot! I do have two small requests, please do this demonstration once more but wear a black shirt.
The first movement you made was obscured by your hands and I cannot tell what you did. It literally looks like a magic trick
Thanks Luke! I’ve been putting off learning this knot till now. I can’t believe it is this easy! Wow even 40 lb leader is smooth thru the guides. FG = Freaking Great!
Glad to help!
Thanks for letting us know and for trying it out!
Bro this is the best knot by far and this way is the best i ever seen..you saved me
Thanks for making time to leave the nice comment Travis!
