Also if you don't have any spills under your vehicle, or notice any leaks or splashes around your engine it could be that your radiator cap is not sealing properly anymore and you need to replace it. Just wait for it to cool down for a hour or two before opening.
First of all that top mark is the level when the engine is at normal operating temperature. The best practice if the engine is cold /cool is to have that level at the lower mark to halfway between both marks ( the coolant expands bit when hot ). In areas where the temperature will go well below freezing a 45% water to 55% coolant mix will give you another 10-15f degree protection against possible " freeze " ( remember wind chill doesn't count only human skin feels that ). There are reasons why the coolant levels would keep dropping. Possible radiator, radiator hoses, heater core or water pump leaks but also the coolant level at freezing would be lower than at 90 degrees f outside temp. Also if the coolant was recently changed, there may still be air pockets.
Funny you make a huge speech about this when 5 seconds of looking in the manual tells you to check and fill the coolant when the engine is cold.. guess toyota doesn't know what their doing

Yeah its not detrimental to the system if its 35-65% out of ratio but dont ever just use water for months on end either as coolant is a lubricant among other characteristics ! This method does keep a measure of what ratio is in there which is a good idea!
Don’t fill it to the fool line because coolant expands when hot, also if you coolant needs to be filled a lot you need to check for leaks because your coolant system is a closed system and you should not lose coolant at all in a perfect system
Kinda light on the "how to check engine coolant" bit. Yes, look at the overflow tank. But, should the engine be hot or cold? Where should the level be based on engine temperature? I hunted elsewhere and basically if the engine is cold, the coolant level should be no lower than the low mark. If hot, it should be no higher than the high mark. So, best to check when the engine is cold and if the level is below the low mark, top it off to that mark.
You could go with either, this was just a top off and I had red available…Toyota states that they are compatible. If you use one over the other just make sure that you mix with distilled water if it is not pre mixed. Thank you for watching!

Thank you I just paid to have everything flushed and replaced and I thought I had a mouse under the hood there was a terrible smell I was looking with a large flashlight and noticed that I had almost no antifreeze in my resivoir thoes idiots must have either forgot to fill it or barely filled it your video was very helpful I’m going to pick up some antifreeze tomorrow

When the engine is cold it should be right in the middle of high and low mark. Coolant expands when engine gets to operating temperature. So what you have said it seems yours is correct.

You can NOT mix different coolants. You need to flush that stuff out of your system and put the correct coolant otherwise you are going to have bigger problems down the road.

I've looked in the manual and found the right coolant to use, my question is if I can just pour it in since the tank is completely empty? Or would I need to clean/flush the tank first?

Hello! Thank you for the informative video. I drive Toyota Innova... I have noticed the coolant level is low and I have added 50/50 ( coolant and distilled water) after 200- 250 kilometres in 24 hours, again the level is near low. Talking about the wheather condition it was between 30°-35°C.
Your Toyota high likely has a leak. Use a coolant UV dye, and with safety eyeglass from UV ray, shine a UV light / black light to look for bright green in your car parts
about every 2 years you should change the coolant, but to be sure, check your owner's manual, it should say how often (some vehicules use long life coolant) you should change it.

With that said, is there a chance that I could encounter issues with an air pocket forming if I don’t release any built up pressure in the hoses? I’ve had this happen before with a Dodge Durango and I would love to know if that needs to be addressed so I don’t have an issue on the freeway (I live in Los Angeles so it’s kind of risky to take chances on certain things).

You can pull it out with a turkey baster or syringe, but there is an over flow tube on the cap of the reservoir that will let excess fluid out of the reservoir if needed.

Yes distilled water doesn’t have minerals in it like tap water. Minerals can corrode/oxidize parts of the cooling system. So I have a used prius 09 and the triangle of death light came on. I’m on vacation now, but will check to see if there’s enough fluid in there when I return. I've read de-ionized water is better for auto systems that distilled. However, I can't confirm that the 50/50 products use de-ionized water, vs distilled, vs tap water. They list just water as added ingredient.

It's better not to mix, from what I read today.. but if it's an emergency, you can add a little, and get it changed/flushed/serviced after.. and the top mark, "full" is where it should be at operating temp.. mine was at the low mark after running it for several hours, so I topped it off, but I'm gonna get it flushed and have the leaks repaired ASAP.

FYI: I have a 2001 Toyota Avalon with 213,000 miles and it run SLIGHTLY low every other oil change. The last time it was low was prior to the pandemic.
Does it always have to be at the high line? I took my 2019 Rav4 for its scheduled maintenance exactly a month ago and the coolant is in between the high and low line, the engine was relatively cooled, only 2 hrs after I arrived home. If this is a reservoir tank, is the coolant level fluctuating or is it evaporating? I'm taking it back on May 1st for a TSB but IDK if this is normal.
The coolant level will fluctuate depending on if the engine is warm, environmental conditions etc. as long as you check it every once and a while to ensure it is above the low level but not above the high level you will be good. Thank you for watching!

Actually it goes up when it's hot so chances are it could be pushing the excess out of the overflow and then when you look at it cold it's back down to low or middle which is where it should be. You prob already figured this out but hopefully that helps

To answer your question, the seals will wear prematurely because they are not designed for the other coolant's chemistry

Can I use only water in my coolant for my toyota 2007 Camry ? I live in Houston.

As long as you are solidly above the low level line you are technically fine, I just like to keep my coolant totally topped off and at the full level.

@@5MinuteFixit I was wondering about this. I recently bought Prestone all purpose 50/50 coolant and I'm a little worried about if this will ruin my radiator. I usually only use Dex Cool.

I haven't had any issues with my car overheating but, I noticed the last time I took it to my dealership for an oil change that they didn't fill up the coolant. Now, I'm not sure about going back because, I kinda feel like it was done on purpose and honestly, I feel better about doing it myself.

I just bought a 2008 Toyota Corolla from my local Toyota dealership 7 months ago and because I live in California and I drive 9 hours a day doing Grubhub and is always hot in California and I have no garage or a shaded area to park it at, so I noticed that the coolant level has gone down and there is no leaks is more likely normal evaporation anyways I noticed that the color of the coolant is pink so would it be safe to top it off with the premixed pink coolant from my local Toyota dealership ? I noticed on your video that the coolant on the reservoir of your car looks pink just like mine and I could be wrong but it looks like you used the concentrate red Toyota coolant, which is what I used on a Toyota Camry in the past and even when mixing it with distilled water is still red and not pink !!! But anyways I still rather just spend the extra money and put the premixed pink coolant from my local Toyota dealership I love this car but I guess my concern is how do I know and can I even know for a fact that the pink coolant in my car is actually the genuine Toyota extra long life pink coolant ?!! Maybe I'm worrying too much about it.

It's better not to mix, from what I read today.. but if it's an emergency, you can add a little, and get it changed/flushed/serviced after.. and the top mark, "full" is where it should be at operating temp.. mine was at the low mark after running it for several hours, so I topped it off, but I'm gonna get it flushed and have the leaks repaired ASAP.

I Honestly don’t like how Toyota decided to do the Radiator setup. I prefer the ones with a traditional Cap on top.

What happens when you only put coolant without water?
I’d you are just topping it off you should be fine but in most vehicles the correct ratio of coolant to water is 50/50. Thank you for watching, hopefully this helps.

I don't think a new Toyota should be losing coolant. I checked mine today and it was below thr low line and it has only 53,000 miles on it.
Just hit 52,000 miles on my 2014 Scion TC (Toyota) and it's now hitting the low mark. Must be normal.
FYI: I have a 2001 Toyota Avalon with 213,000 miles and it run SLIGHTLY low every other oil change. The last time it was low was prior to the pandemic.
Does it always have to be at the high line? I took my 2019 Rav4 for its scheduled maintenance exactly a month ago and the coolant is in between the high and low line, the engine was relatively cooled, only 2 hrs after I arrived home. If this is a reservoir tank, is the coolant level fluctuating or is it evaporating? I'm taking it back on May 1st for a TSB but IDK if this is normal.
The coolant level will fluctuate depending on if the engine is warm, environmental conditions etc. as long as you check it every once and a while to ensure it is above the low level but not above the high level you will be good. Thank you for watching!

Actually it goes up when it's hot so chances are it could be pushing the excess out of the overflow and then when you look at it cold it's back down to low or middle which is where it should be. You prob already figured this out but hopefully that helps

You should use a funnel when adding coolant. Spilled coolant is very poisonous to pets.
