  • So I get this question a lot. Do you really need to have surgery to fix a hernia?
    Well in this video I discuss a bit more what hernias are and why you might need surgery to fix the hernia.
    The decision to operate on an individual hernia is complex and really needs to be carefully discussed with your surgeon who can weigh the risks and benefits of this complex operation.

    Fabulous job on explaining about hernias. I have an inguinal hernia that my doctor and I are keeping an eye on.

    Just got my umbilical hernia repaired this week. It went from unnoticed to daily pain and discomfort often very severe so Im glad I could get it repaired. My surgeon was excellent.

    Thank you for showing a hernia mesh in your video. I have a large incisional hernia and its had a devastating impact on my life. I have been told my only chance is a mesh repair with reconstruction, been waiting four years now for surgery in UK, the thought of mesh inside me terrifies me.

      Wow 4 years, that’s ridiculous even by NHS standards. Why such a long wait? Covid, strikes , all of the above? I found out just before Christmas that I’ve got an umbilical hernia after deciding to go and see a consultant privately who recommended a CT scan and which revealed the hernia. I would have still been waiting to see the consultant now on NHS. Realistic waiting time under NHS for op where I live is 50-56 weeks. My surgery is in just under 3 weeks time with mesh. Keeping my fingers everything goes well even though I admit my anxiety levels are not good at the moment. I think what’s making me worse is how I will cope post op as I live alone and have no family nearby to help me with stuff

      @@50kevind At the beginning the delay was Covid, for 15 months I wasn't even seen by a consultant. Also I need a high dependency bed after surgery, expecting to be in hospital for a minimum of 5 days, so I suppose all these things are needed by others more unwell than myself. I too live alone and rural, so worried about managing once home. I had a phone appointment with the consultant who assured me I would not be send home until I was able to manage independently. This reassured me. Make sure they know your situation. Plan ahead, for myself I will fill the freezer and adapt things to avoid the need to reach or bend, practical things like a chair near the bed for support, a picker to help pick things up. I don't know how I will manage socks and shoes, but will work it out ! Good luck with your surgery, it will soon be done and then you can concentrate on recovery with much less anxiety.

      Sorry that you live in such a backwards poverty-hole 3rd world country. Very embarrassing to your nation. If I were you, I would not trust any kind of medical care to a system so stupid, uncaring and so incompetent that it would take 4 years to wait for a minor surgery. That means they are just very very bad at their work and field.
      for about 500 quid and another 500 for the flights you could have gone to Thailand where they have a modern medical system and do 1000s of those a day, easily. Then get a bonus week of recovering on a warm beach.
      as for being terrified about a little piece of mesh? walk down a street past 100 people. you just passed several with plastic shoulders. 10 have mesh somewhere. 1 of them has metal rods bolted to their spine somewhere. Many have screws in them. Many have springs, mesh and all kind of these things in them.
      Seriously, get a grip.

    If I had a hernia I think Id be begging to not have surgery because a couple of my friends had surgery to repair a hernia and had nothing but problems!

      Most people are bothered enough that having the hernia fixed is worth it. Not everyone will have a good outcome though so its important to understand that.

    I have an umbilical Hernia and can not lift anything because it will come out it’s pain and hurts told my GI doctor and they said as long as I can stick it back in I don’t need surgery till I am in my 70s but if I can’t put it back in then they can operate! WelCOME to CANADA social medicine!
    I think we need a system where coverage is based on several factors and payments need to come from everywhere possible! Spread the pain, help people live good productive lives

    Can an abdominal and inguinal hernia be repaired at the same time?

  • @BenjaminSchmaus
    @BenjaminSchmaus 2 месяца назад

    In regards to a inguinal hernia that has a noticeable bulge and responds to a Valsalva maneuver but has really no pain how do surgeons differentiate if its truly a hernia with a sac and possible intestines or peritoneal fat vs a cord lipoma or just extraperitoneal fat? Is there a difference in approach?
