  • A hiatal hernia is when part of the stomach pushes up through the diaphragm muscle. Hiatal hernias may not have symptoms, but they can also cause heartburn & abdominal discomfort. This video may help.

Starting with diaphragmatic breathing can really help pull the hernia back down as well as relax the abdominal area. This can be done in sitting or lying down.
Next are bridges with a hold and a cat/cow or cat/dog. Strengthening is a great way to help prevent the hernia from happening.
Seated, a QL stretch and an upper thoracic sidebend will help lengthen and open up the upper chest area.
Finally, a standing sidebend and deep breathing with arm movements not only help relax the muscles, but they also help lengthen the area to help pull the hernia back down.

I felt like I was dying for two weeks. Had a CT scan that showed a HH. My doctor blew it off like it was nothing and told me to take Omephrazole and Gas X and said the pain will go away eventually. I couldn't sleep, I couldn't eat anything. I did these moves ONE time, all of them as instructed. I had immediate relief! I was able to sleep and eat. I will do these every day now!

Hey guys I'm from India and I'm just 22 years old I've been diagnosed with hitial hernia for about two years and bad news is it is getting worse and worse i hesitate to eat outside i cant get back to my normal schedule i feel uneasy all the time, all the time i feels like I'm behind everyone, can't really focus on my work so just find some distraction to about that feeling and pain of being a patient and this all add to up to new hernia formation which is inguinal hernia so basically i have two hernias at a time and it's really miserable to deal with it, but seeing your comments i just felt like these are my people who are also going through lot and lot so thanks for making me feel that I'm not behind and this problem can cured, i really appreciate y'all for coming out here and telling what you feel and how you feel. I hope everyone gets well and stick to healthy routine thanks guys and have great day❤

Earlier this year in February was the roughest time for me. I remember randomly getting a tight feeling in my chest and freaking out thinking I was in danger. I ended up going to the emergency room four times from panic attacks because I didn’t know what was going on with me. I ended up being sent to the gastro doctor and I was nervous because I had to get an endoscopy and I did not want to go through that. It ended up being one of the most enlightening times in my life because I discovered how strong I was and that I shouldn’t be afraid of things that go on with my body or health anxiety. I learned it doesn’t mean it’s the end of the world, and also to learn I was not in any danger. I have a small sliding hernia and now I am much better. I took pills for my stomach and it gets very uncomfortable sometimes when my hernia irritates my esophagus, but I am much calmer as a person now even when I have issues because I went through my biggest fear and strongest battle, facing things I didn’t think I could and beating my health anxiety PLUS getting a whole endoscopy. For anyone going through this, I pray your hernia heals more and more and we got this! We are in this together and you are NOT alone. ❤

Pretty constant burping and I feel like my stomach is bulging, can't even lay on my stomach. Does that sound about right?

    Dr Jo,
First of all. Many many thanks for this priceless and amazing exercise for haital hernia.
Few weeks back all of sudden one afternoon my chest had become tight and couldn't breath. It's so severe and went to emergency. They confirmed nothing wrong with heart or lungs and sent me home. My condition not improved. I start eating very small meals rather than my regular meal(a large meal get me the same problem again). My GP said it might be hiatal hernia. Need a surgery. I was is in more stress after hearing this than my actual problem.
Finally, I came to know your video and did the last stretch only 3 times. It's miracle. No pain, no tightness. Amazing. You are real angel for me. It's 4 weeks now I am pretty normal. At the beginning it came back couple of times and I did the only last stretch again (I didn't feel better on all of the other stretches) it's gone

Thank you Dr. Jo for posting this instructional video, for the past two years I've been certain I was dying and it's affected every aspect of my life, health and being. I was convinced it was my heart, Cardiologist says no, the heart is healthy. My GP practically laughed me out of the office accused me of being a hypochondriac, not a single doc ever even mentioned the possibility of a hiatal hernia. Which pisses me off now I've discovered it and have been describing literally all of the symptoms to them.
Last week I had a particularly bad attack, that led to racing heart, anxiety and what feels like a spasming in my diaphragm. I was terrified, then when I belched it was relieved
That led me by chance while searching chest pains after eating I found your video. After one session of stretching it feels somewhat improved today. I see my gastro on Feb 14 hopefully there's a solution, even just knowing exactly what's happening wyell be such a relief . Thank you so much.

In the meantime, I'm going to incorporate your stretches. This hernia may be to blame for a lot of fatigue so any home treatment options are welcome.

Spent half of the day in the ER yesterday because of a mystery pain that's been undiagnosed for over 5 years. I have all the basics symptoms for this exactly but nothing has ever shown up to prove this on my scans. I had two months of coughing that followed my family having a severe flu which made it flare up. I can even remember day one of when the pain started and I was in great shape and in the process of doing a sit-up exercise. That was 5 years ago! I'm excited to see these exercises and will faithfully attempt them all to see if I can decrease this incredible pain under my ribs. My doctor said I'm basically the healthiest fat man he's ever seen in a round about way and proceeded to give me pain meds with patches. I'll update after a while of these exercises.

I'm currently here at the hospital waiting for my cardio doctor to check me up because I'm having a hard time to breath tho my oxygen level is normal and my bp. While sitting here at the bench alone I kinda realized why not try this exercise and in God’s grace, it helped me breathe a little bit at least it lessens the chest tightening I'm feeling right now.
PS. It's kinda awkward. People are looking at me while doing this exercise but I don't care as long as it helps me with my difficulty in breathing.

Honestly the change that has helped the most is taking a quality fiber supplement daily with probiotics. Get your gut biome healthy and it will help. At least that's what has worked for me. I went from daily reflux to maybe once a month after eating something really spicy. The hernia hasn't been causing any problems. And of course I did the exercises in this video daily for probably 6 months. I'm sure that helped as well. Good luck to you!

Hello first of all sorry for my english îm french 😊
I’m here just to write this comment hoppîng it will helps every person who have hiatal hernia.
The doctor told me that I had this problem and they They prescribed medication (stomach protector, stomach acid regulator) that I had to take every day. I took them every day for 2 months and they had no effect, but really 0. I suffered alone in my room, outside ... I constantly felt like a huge weight on my chest. As if someone had dropped 5kg of brick on my chest. I had a suffocating sensation, as if I couldn't breathe, a lump in my throat, it was very, very unpleasant. One day I got fed up, I wanted to find a solution on my own and I came across your video. I can't thank you enough. In just 2-3 days of practicing your exercises I was already feeling better. So I've continued every day. I've also combined it with a doctor's exercise, which involves drinking a glass of water on an empty stomach and getting back on your feet. And believe me, since then I've had no symptoms whatsoever. I'd like every sufferer like me to do these exercises every day and never give up, and I swear you'll see the difference. Thank you madame for this video, thank you for saving me from months of terrible pain.
Now I do this exercice at least once a week to keep it like that
Sometimes I get acid reflux, but it's not bad.
I've even managed to forget my problem, as if I didn't have a hiatal hernia.

But I believe the severe bloating from SIBO worsened my hiatal hernia. For about 3 months I’ve been suffering with heart palpitations probably due to impingement of the vagus nerve. Anyway, I did your exercises last night for about 15 minutes and for the first time in 3 months, the palpitations went away. I think I was able to get the stomach to move back down. Thanks so much for sharing this video. You really made a difference in my life. I just find it funny that all the doctor tells me is you have a hiatal hernia and take these meds. Really looking forward to soothing out some of this chest pain, doing this regularly. Thank you. Pretty miffed, my dr just told me to double up on antacids. 😅 this is way more helpful. Thank you!

Im not sure if I have a hiatal hernia but I have some of the symptoms. I've tried doing these exercises for a couple days and am feeling significant improvement in symptoms since then. I feel like they are helping. Thanks for posting these!

I haven’t been diagnosed with a HH (yet!), but I strongly suspect that’s what’s behind my GERD symptoms for the last two months. I’ve been to the ER four times for the pain. I found this video in the middle of a painful episode and it really helped lessen my symptoms in the moment, which was such a relief! I look forward to continuing these every day to help relieve my symptoms.

Did they do a CT scan of abdomen and pelvis? I would get some imaging to find out exactly what's going on. I got a ct scan that showed mine
