    My sister is a dressmaker. She learned, from my mother who was a very experienced dressmaker, as well as from her own experience to alway make notes, ask many questions to clarify and get the client to read her notes. And still, there were sometimes problems because the garment came out differently or the client had a different idea of how it would look.

    Time saver suggestion - have two cones of each color so one is on the machine and one is on the bobbin winder, and run only the bobbins you need so as not to waste thread. (Then piece quilt tops with leftover bobbin thread on your domestic machine!) 10 year Gammill Statler longarm quilter here.

    Truth is... It's easier to see the embroidery on the solid colored background (patch), than on the printed fabric (the quilt top). Personally, knowing kids, I would have removed/unpicked the "wrong" stitching even though I was going to cover it up with the patch. After several washings a lot of the signs of the old embroidery would be gone and if that patch was ever to come off most of the evidence of a mistake would be gone.

    I made a quilt for a coworker who wanted his granddaughter’s name embroidered on the quilt. He gave me the wrong name and tried to blame me. But the text with the name saved me. I made a second quilt for him with the correct name. Unfortunately he only paid me for the one quilt. I felt bad for him because he got the name wrong so I didn’t insist on getting paid for both quilts. I still had to ask him to pay me though. If I hadn’t asked, he wouldn’t have paid me. I don’t love making quilts for money. But the last time someone asked me to make a quilt, I told them they needed to go buy the fabric or kit and I would do it for them. I never heard from them again. Which was fine. It didn’t hurt my feelings. I know how it is. People don’t realize how much fabric costs. And they don’t realize how long it takes to make a quilt, especially if you have a regular job too. I quilt because I love it. It’s a lifestyle.

Thank goodness you had the text. Hope she does end up being a wonderful client and not a constant problem.

      @@thaliacrafts407 just keeping it real. I have more grace for small businesses trying to make it in this crazy world than I would have for demanding customers. Being a business owner and being a customer are 2 different things. I've been both and an employee doing customer service. I don't want to be a business owner again. Its a tough job and I have a lot of respect for them. I can be a gracious customer because I've dealt with ungracious customers and don't want to be a difficult one. I'm working on finding those areas in my life that I can improve on and the places where I could be a better person. Years of working retail have jaded me and I could learn to have more grace with people who I serve.

    Why do you sew backings onto your leaders? Why not pin them?

    • @ToniNov25
      @ToniNov25  2 года назад +1

      Pins take too long.. sewing the leaders with a basting stitch takes less than 2 minutes .. the back fabric is even throughout the whole leader. When you at end of quilt you also don’t get pinned or garments get caught by the pin when moving around the quilt. Also pinning creates puckers throughout the back fabric . But the main reason is time. . It can take 30- hour to pin a back fabric right. I don’t have that kind of time when I’m quilting 4-5 quilts a day
