After watching the “short” of the video, I watched the full version for the 3rd time. Things are beginning to click in my brain to understand the concepts better. Thank you so much. I truly enjoy your style of instruction.
Thanks for the interesting look at quilting decisions! Very helpful : ) One talk I heard on quilt design suggested that if the quilt piecing is very linear/geometric, consider a curvy quilting design for it...and if the piecing is curvy, consider more straight line quilting designs. That has worked well for me as a starting place when thinking about how to quilt the quilt!
What an excellent video covering areas that most gloss over. My few attempts with variegated have been unsuccessful so far but your tip about stitch length is going to send me back to my machine and do a test sample on the few spools I own trying the same design in different stitch lengths. Thank you so much for passing on your knowledge.
Thanks Tracey...I have used variegated thread in the past but never thought to lengthen the stitch. Great video! You are very easy to listen to and the pace is just right.
Great points... I basically go over these points when taking in client quilts....explaining this to non longarm Quilter’s really helps them understand the process.
Great video. I learned a lot. Never heard the term quilting the air out. But I must do that because I love to do dense quilting. I'm going to remember that forever. Also a great tip you gave was increasing the stitch length of variegated thread. Please make more of these videos.
Always learn so much from your videos. I am working towards getting a Lucy in the next few months. I have never worked on a longarm and so I am watching and saving ALL of your instructions. Also anticipating your books which are in the mail. There are other instructors true but I find you the most inspiring. Thank-you very much.
That's a great tip on lengthening the stitch length with variegated thread, or any thread, for that matter. When I first saw your up-close look at the stitching on your skull, I thought I must not have my Lucey set correctly (?) or something, because my stitches look tighter than that. But I normally use about 11 SPI, so that explains everything!! Whew!! Thanks for this great video! 💕
You gave me a few “lightbulb” moments in this video. I never thought about “quilting all the air out” and what it does to the warmth of the quilt. I also have never thought about using variegated thread, but you made it look so good, I think I might try it. I would like to know the name of the quilting design on the quilt with the small squares on a black background. (It’s the one you said you quilted all the air out of, but it will hang on the wall, so it really doesn’t have to be warm). I’m just starting to collect designs for my computer quilting. Thank you for a very thought-provoking video.
Good morning. Thank you for this video. I learned a lot. I wish you would’ve shown the back of the quilt though. Do you have any hand quilting videos please?
You're welcome Hazel. Showing the backs is a great idea! I wish I'd of thought of that when I was filming the video. I don't do hand quilting at all. My needle is electric. :)
@@bettywhittington9654 I’m in NY so I got to take a class from Tracey in person - Tracey was a game changer for my quilting - I’ve been to other in person classes and she’s the best by far!
@@whirlsnswirlsquilting4362 it was very timely actually. I was going to ask you about how to choose which panto and you must have heard my thoughts. Lol
I enjoyed this video, but I, right now am only doing free motion. Do you have a video or can you do one, that shows ideas for different basic blocks. I am pretty new and struggle deciding on how to quilt each one. Thanks.
Hey Mindy, I have an online class available on my website that offers just that exact thing! Lots of different common blocks in a sampler quilt, quilted in 3 different styles. Traditional, Modern and Freestyle. It's called: Killer Freemotion Skillbuilder Series. That would be perfect for you. :)
I am only good at meander. I use it or loops. I can do feathers. I wouldn’t call them good, but for me, they’re ok. I’m not going to even try some of that fancy quilting. I don’t think the quilting should compete with the quilt top pattern. It used to be that the quilting was just to hold the quilt together. My grandmother handmade quilts. She just used, I think it was yarn and called tied? Not sure, but my point is, the quilting doesn’t need to be fancy. It’s pretty when you can see it, but if you have to hold it up to the light to see it, because it’s a busy quilt top, then it’s not necessary. So I do meander. Just my opinion, of course. I guess I’m a minimalist. 🙂 Thanks for all of your videos. I think I’ve watched most of them and they are very helpful. You do beautiful work.
Awesome video with wonderful examples and explanations and at a comfortable pace. Great summation at the end. I do have a question, what variegated thread did you use in both of the examples? Thanks for all your time and work involved in sharing this very valuable information.
Question. Can pantographs be printed out on a laser printer using 8.5x11 paper? I haven’t visited your site yet so I apologize if this is a redundant question.
I can't remember Amber, it's been a long time but if you google free pattern, skull quilt, it should turn up. It's all 2 1/2" squares. Done like a pixel quilt.
I am a brand new long armer and I learned SO MUCH from this video! Thanks for the great content!
You are so welcome! How's it going with your machine?
Pretty good! I gave myself permission to not be perfect! Just finished the 3rd quilt and it’s definitely better than the first!

That is absolutely true and I use that theory also. The juxtaposition between straight and curvy works really nicely both ways.

That's a great way to play with threads to see how they'll look! You will be amazed at what you discover. :)
Thanks Tracey...I have used variegated thread in the past but never thought to lengthen the stitch. Great video! You are very easy to listen to and the pace is just right.
Betcha love that variegated thread even more once your stitches are a bit longer! ;)
I also lengthen the stitch length when I use metallics for the same reason.
So much great information thank you!
Petition to have you make tee shirts with the phrase “Done is better than...not”.
Thank you so much! I love the idea of the t-Shirts too! :D
Loved the thread tip about lengthening the stitch so the varigation is more readily visible. That would have never occurred to me. THanks!
You are so welcome J.R.!
Super videos once again. Thank you for inspiring me, Tracey. You do the best videos, ever. I learn so much from you.

I'll check for you Nancy. I quilted that quilt about 4 years ago. It's basically just spirals but I'll try and find it. :)

This is very helpful. Thank you.
what is a good weight for thread if the quilt is to be used as a bed quilt? for example innovatech thread?
40wt or 50wt is good
I always learn so much from you. Thank you for sharing.
Thank you! :)
As a newbie quilter Good thoughts to consider. Thank you..

@@peggyfinney9870 LOL! There you go! :D
On the pretty quilt you used variegated thread on the top, what color did you use in the bobbin?
I use (for the most part) Magna Glide Classic pre wound bobbins. That one would have the Light Tan in the bobbin.
Still trying to find Concertina quilt pattern. Link comes up "page not found." Where can I find this E2E pattern in qli format.?
I took it off the website temporarily. It needed to be re worked.
So helpful! Thank you!

Hey Janet, the link for that quilt is in the descriptions already. :)

Can these quilt designs be used on a domestic machine?
You can absolutely freehand them! Watch the videos links in the descriptions and give them a go!
Fantastic video!! Thank you
Glad you liked it!

You'll need to purchase them and they come printed on rolls of paper.

What type of design would you choose for civil war traditional piecing?
Probably something very traditional like a Baptist Fan. Make sure your thread is a matt and not shiny.
FOUND IT! THE PATTERN! It's called "Pin Drop". Laundry basket quilts has a free PDF download on their website!
Thank you!!
I believe the name of that pattern is CITY BLOCKS.
Ouuu! Thank you!!
