    I am new to Longarm quilting and pantographs. This video is wonderful. I have been searching for weeks for this type of explanation on setup. She is a great teacher and doesn’t waste time with “chitchat” and teaches clearly and concisely. I know I will have to watch this several times to get all of her instructions, but that is because there is so much information here. I am no longer intimidated and able to start working with my new “toy”. You have made my retirement goal come true! Thank you so much.

    Excellent video. The only thing you forgot to mention is if you have a directional panto, you might have to load it upside down and quilt it upside down to get the orientation the way you want. Example: sailboats or rows of animals, etc. Ask me how I know. I now mark all of my directional pantos with a highlighted note to check the orientation to see if it makes a difference on the top.

    Very good video. I do have 1 question that wasn't addressed. Do you make sure when placing the panto, that design is started & stopped on each side at same place as well as top & bottom, so that the design starts & stops on each side in same place as well?

    • @whirlsnswirlsquilting4362
      @whirlsnswirlsquilting4362  Месяц назад

      With some panto designs, I do 'centre' them so that the design doesn't cut off a lot of a large motif and leave only a tiny bit but if the panto is a simple design with not a lot of different elements (or the borders are a busy fabric for example) I don't worry about it. On quilts with solid or tone on tone fabrics for the borders, I do like to move the paper side to side so it looks 'even'. For top to bottom, it is what it is. Pantos are meant to fall off all 4 sides and unless the design happens to have the perfect dimensions to 'fit' the quilt top, it won't be the same top and bottom. That has never bothered me. Hope that helps! :)

    I’m new to pantographs and I really like your video but I’m confused how do you know where to start after you’ve basted the left hand side of the quilt. So that you know where the number 1 line is?

    • @whirlsnswirlsquilting4362
      @whirlsnswirlsquilting4362  Год назад +1

      Each pantograph will be different. You need to start on a line that fills in any partial bits (travelling along the tape to get there so you're off the quilt) and then continue with the line that will get you all the way to the other side.

    I learned something... I always thought pantographs were computer programs loaded into a longarm machine’s computer, and once you set up your quilt parameters, you just turn on the machine and let it quilt (the only manual intervention required if you run out of bobbin thread or something). I had no idea how manual this process actually is.

    Hi Tracey: Another question regarding the panto. I finally see the ghost row and the top of the panto that matches. What I am still confused on is after you mark one and two, and do the ghost row and the first row(mine is a two row repeat) and then I travel down to the number two again, When I start again do I do the ghost row again? If not, where do I start.

      Cate, each pantograph will be different. Once you've set up your tape and such, you will have partial shapes from the design that don't travel across the pantograph then they'll be a line that WILL travel across the paper. Start with the partials, using the tape as the travelling point. Once the 'side partial bits' are quilted, find the line that travels to the other side and quilt across the row. Does that make sense?

      How lucky are you with your new longarm! That's awesome!! I don't move the laser because the end of every quilt is different and you never know where you may end up at the bottom. Sometimes, the quilt Gods will land the bottom edge of your quilt right at the top of the paper (top of the upper ghost row) but that doesn't happen very often. Anytime I can finish the quilt using that upper ghost row, I do but sometimes, the bottom edge of the quilt is outside where that sits so I've always just advanced it and taped it off if necessary. If moving the laser at the end makes more sense to you, go for it!! There is no right/wrong way to do it. Whatever works for you and what makes sense to your way of thinking is the way to go. Congratulations on your new baby! Have fun with it. 🤩

    Great video. New Moxie midarm owner. Have been practicing pantos and now want to do a real quilt. Liked your explanation on how to finish the quilt when the quilt botttom is smaller than the design. One question I have is why do you quilt the ghost design when beginning a pantograph? If you line the design with the quilt top edge why should you need to quilt the ghost design?

    • @margehutchins5754
      @margehutchins5754 3 года назад +1

      Replying to myself lol. After looking at my practice pantographs found the design often left the top edge. By quilting the ghost row I can see how there is a more uniform partial row and the first full row is complete.

    • @whirlsnswirlsquilting4362
      @whirlsnswirlsquilting4362  3 года назад +2

      Hey Marge, the pantographs undulate so they will always 'fall off' all 4 sides. Edge to edge quilting is meant to go past all 4 edges. You will never end with a perfect full row (because of the undulation we need the nesting). Does that make sense?

  • @djackson4659
    @djackson4659 27 дней назад

    This may be a silly question, but how would you do this if you wanted to start stitching beginning with the first row and not stitch the ghost row? I have a practice quilt already on my machine. Also, I’m guessing you start quilting at a repeating pattern and not the first design on the edge of the pantograph?

    • @whirlsnswirlsquilting4362
      @whirlsnswirlsquilting4362  27 дней назад +1

      With pantographs, you are meant to have partial rows top and bottom and partials down the sides. E2E is just that. A design that falls off all 4 sides.
      If you leave out the ghost row, because they undulate, you will be missing parts of the design meant to nest and will have bare spots.

That may mean you have some partial lines or half a curl or part of leaf etc. to take care of before you hit the line that will take you through the full row. @whirlsnswirlsquilting4362  Год назад

      Thank you for the kind words Jo! I usually use side clamps but not always. The most important thing to remember with them is to not pull them tight. They should not be 'pulling' on the fabric at all. If you have the clamps tight, they are stretching the backing fabric and when that quilt comes off the frame, the backing is going to relax and can pull the top to the back.
