I’m legitimately surprised Steve Dangle didn’t spontaneously combust watching the Sabres destroy the Leafs.

If it makes you/him feel even a tiny bit better, I’ve seen the Sabres lose to the Canes at PNC every year since 2018 and only after the last game (6-2) did I finally consider not going next year.

So as a goalie who’s played up to a decent competitive level. I can tell you Sammy is in a really dark place. Like I think most people get that but if you’ve played net before and seen the goals he’s let in it’s like bad. I’m talking very dark. Like the yips is an understatement and I really feel sorry for him.
Also the debate on whether to play or not really comes from the causation of his mental issues. If they’re external, then playing him, won’t fix the problem and just following the story and seeing him play, I think it might be an external issue.
Sadly, I think whatever is going on is something that was going on when he was with the Capitals, too. :(

Sammy will pitch a shutout and the next game will let 6 by in the first period, including 3 where the shot was unimpeded and you watch the replays a dozen times and STILL can't figure out how he lost the puck and it got by him. Watched him last year and felt he was finally maturing and had put those days behind him but...total regression this year.

Seeing Sammy hunched over in the tunnel was absolutely heartbreaking. His mental game is shot and it isn't coming back while being shelled by other teams.
Yup. He gave up bad goals, but the Buffalo forwards were just walking up to the goalies unopposed.
That second goal was just sad.

As a fan who went to the game tonight it was one of the most depressing and embarrassing moments I’ve ever had as a fan. Leafs fans outnumbered sabres fan, families coming together around Christmas time showed up in massive numbers. I went with my dad we are maybe able to go once every two years. It was pathetic and insulting to see that performance in front of thousands of your own fans who travelled to a different country to watch you play. Waste of hard earned money and time

You could have had a Michelin star dinner and a hosted game night with your family. Instead you got a bunch of millionaires who are supposed to be specialists, unable to focus for a couple of hours.
Legitimately Matthews and Knies hit this game, and even the struggling part of the game with their hearts. Mariner did his wizzard stuff as much as he could but at least one goal... deep into their poor morale, was his fault too (the point is he started strong.) The whole first half of the game I kept being bewildered by how it was always looking like an odd man rush on sammy, even if there were 4 leafs around the goal, the plays looked like odd man rushes, or they were just totally screened on sammy.
Legitimately, 2 of the 5 on sammy were "golie, do you have it? Not today? darn." and even those were about his team failing infront of him.
I had honestly hoped switching out to jones was going to be a slap in the face "you know he's not fresh, PLAY WITH DEFENSE IN MIND" but the team absolutely failed that. Nothing could wake up these millionaire professionals out of whatever mindset they were in. Matthews, Knies, and Mariner I saw give a passionate effort, honestly the first 15min of game, even with the score and D play, I thought "these guys are on fire, all they need is to hit the locker room and snap into it." and those three came out in p2, but the team gave up as they often do in p2.
That's the game in my view.
Everyone has their limit. Mine was spending $500 for a set of tickets that my dad and I went to see our first game since 2011. It was against Chicago on a Saturday night in 2020. They Lost 6-2. In that moment, I told my dad I’m not mad I spent the money, I’m mad because they don’t care. The only way they will get it is if we stop watching them live , and just maybe they will try harder. Win or lose this team gets supported… and that’s a recipe for FAILURE.
As a Buffalo guy here, I haven’t seen this team in the playoffs since I was 11. After loosing to CBJ 9-4 I genuinely wanted us to get cooked in our home building bc I feel like that’s the only way the organization will realize they are a dumpster fire. Thanks for letting us have our Stanley cup moment of our season 😂😂

I imagine the restrictions on Leafs fans buying directly from the Sabres has been a boon to resellers.
But, Toronto's historical problems with not getting killed by the Sabres is also a source of happiness in the Queen City.

Sabres fan here. As the score went up and up last night so did my anticipation for watching this LFR!! It didn't disappoint, 9-3, 9-3!!!!!!

2nd goal: Benoit way outta position, leads to a 2 on 1. Matthews with no effort in tracking back, doesn't dive to get in the way of the goal.
3rd goal: Marner with a brutal giveaway.
4th goal: Brodie should get an assist for that great pass right back to Buffalo
6th goal: Jones hasn't even warmed up and Domi + Timmins let him face a breakaway for his 1st shot
7th goal: Brodie outta position and just glides back. McCabe lets the puck go right by him behind the net and then doesn't stick check anyone in front. JT just stands there too.
Samsonov was crap, but the rest of the team tried to out do him.
That's why I believe they will NOT make the playoffs let alone play 1 round.

I listened to the whole thing on radio, I usually watch LFR the morning after, stayed up to watch this one.
I went to the Sabres game on tuesday where they got annihilated by the Blue Jackets 9-4… mayhaps the Leafs could complete the cycle when they play the jackets on saturday 🙃

We won because it’s the first time this season that everyone was back. Quinn,Greenway,Skinner and Levi didn’t have as many mistakes. Whether that means we win the next game, I have no damn idea😂, but for tonight the Sabres did okay

Vegas' starting goalie for the, at minimum, near future just played his 3rd ever NHL game tonight and looked shaky as hell. His backup has played 21 games in the AHL. Depending on the return date of Hill and Thompson, Vegas is in for some trouble.
Good to see the Oilers win tonight, and I believe the Oilers will finish top 8 . Let go Oilers! I hope the Leafs will win next game. As I can see, Leafs play better on the road.

...though I feel like I'm being unfair. I'm just used to complaining about the Sharks' goaltending ever since Jones declined. Blackwood is actually looking pretty damn good for us, he has his share of off games but he's absolutely playing his heart out. But there's only so much even an excellent goalie can do when the rest of the defense is taking a collective shit.
Luckily, I grew up in Portland as a Trail Blazers fan, so "Look to the future, we'll win it next year!" has been the mantra for literally my entire life.

I'll never forget the time I drove to Buffalo with my 7 year old son. He loved hockey and this was his chance to see his first NHL game live. He was stoked. This was many years ago before any of the current Leafs were on the team. The Leafs lost 5-0 in that game, but they didn't have scoring chance all night. The looked like a AHL team. So my son saw no good plays. There was nothing to cheer about. And after the game we couldn't find our car. Last night reminds me of this bad experience in Buffalo.

When your goalie lets in goals that were so bad that they would make a peewee house league coach face palm I can't even blame them for quitting, that kinda thing doesn't just take the wind out of your sails, it cuts down the entire mast.

That's been a big part of Ottawa's season this year. Goaltender allows a couple really poor goals and then the team in front of them goes to shit. Goalies are a huge part of a team's confidence. A bad goal makes it feel like you can't make a mistake or even allow a shot against otherwise it's in your net.
That was the first game all season where the Sabres had their top 6 all healthy, same group from last year and the chemistry was noticeable. Aside from getting consistent goaltending, I think the Sabres are only a couple players away from being a serious playoff team. The blue line still feels like it's missing a piece and the bottom 6 could use a new face or two. Let's go Buffalo!

I told my wife the other night, right after the Leafs lost to the Rangers, that they were going to be in for a fight in Buffalo. And that was only because Buffalo had been embarrassed as well, losing 9-4 at home to the Blue Jackets ! So what happens ? Leafs put up a major stinker, and now they themselves have to play Columbus next. If you think Toronto will bounce back and beat the Blue Jackets, you are sorely mistaken. After Saturday, and going into the Christmas break, Leafs will be on a three game regulation loss losing streak, with no answers on defence, no answers in goal, just a Core Four of highly paid marshmallows who only think in terms of ME ME ME ! And to think, Joseph ( CALL ME ) WAHHHLLLLL isn’t due to return until February ! I have a funny feeling that I will be watching a lot of LFR’s in the near future 😂

this was the first game the Sabres had all of their top two lines playing and man that was a huge difference, but I love my Sabres and this was so much fun
