    The problem with the Leafs' roster is the salary cap is 87.7 mil and 4 players of their 26 man roster take 53 percent of that. How do you build a cup contending team when over half your cap goes to 20% of the people who dress for a game

      @aaronykam 4 месяца назад +5

      If it's any consolation, the Canucks are likely gonna have the same issue next year with the season they are having, a whole bunch of guys are gonna want raises with their career years.. there's something off with the system if you actively WANT your stars to perform LESS during the regular season just so you can afford to keep them yours...

    • @Infinity238
      @Infinity238 4 месяца назад

      @@aaronykam kind of my point, Normally you cant keep everyone. If you don't win you keep 1 or 2 of the essential guys, you trade some for futures, and you replace the guys you can replace for the same or less money. Just as an outside observer it seems like the Leafs are trying to hold onto everyone at the cost of the roster. Look at the canucks. Traded their captain during a career year for younger players and futures, and a year later are better because of it.

    - BOTH Sedin twins
    - Adam Foote
    - Sergei Gonchar
    - Mike Yeo
    All of these guys, including Tocchet, have either won a Stanley Cup or are Hall of Fame players. You better believe they're in it to win it...but they also know the game isn't a skills competition; it's a hard-nosed gritty game that goes to the team that wants the win the most. And that's what they instill in their players.

    I don't like the Leafs' chances tomorrow against the Kraken, after the mauling they got in Vancouver. The Canucks are picky shooters, who are hell on a goalie's GAA and often outshot by teams they beat. They give other teams the perimeter because they trust their goalies to make saves (Demko was completely screened by his own defenceman on the first goal) and they're confident their defence can disrupt passes and players in their zone. Canucks special teams dominated the game.

    • @jax1580
      @jax1580 4 месяца назад +5

      You get it. So few do. Most just look at the shots and wonder why they lost. Calgary fans used to be bad for that. We out shoot every team so why do we lose??? It's quality of chances and ability to finish.

    • @ajbolt7
      @ajbolt7 4 месяца назад +4

      Yup this is exactly why the Canucks are top goalscorers in the league. It's extremely easy to look at the shot total and say that there should've been way more goals against based on the number alone. But the Canucks lock down games in the 3rd period, they get sticks in the lanes and prevent high danger passes resulting in an inability to generate major chances. That's why they've got the widest goal differential in the NHL.
      The shot totals are wildly deceptive when you look at the game. If it was as simple as outshooting the opponent, the Canucks wouldn't be 1st in the league right now. Demko's great but he only had 3 shutouts in his entire career, this season alone he's already put up 4. That's not him being the best he's ever been, it's a defensive system in front of him.

    Its quality that does.

    Lack of focus is a killer, not lack of shot totals.

We have one. Offense. We have have been trying to do the same thing with the same formula and it's obvious that again, it will not work...doesn't matter if they have flashes of brilliance at points during a game. Steve, come on now.
    The Canucks are the top scoring team in the league, with a goal differential of +57. It is possible that Canucks are really good at shooting the puck and the goals scored were good goals.
    There are 5 Leaf players that consume well over half the available cap space. Naturally, the quality of the other players on the roster will suffer.
    Seriously, Leafs just signed Nylander to a 11.5 million a year contract. Perhaps, they would have been better served trading for better defense, since defense wins championships.
    What is the GM supposed to do when saddled with huge contracts which hampers their ability to improve the team elsewhere. Treliving was stuck with this roster, and essentially had to sign Nylander or else there would have been a Leafs Fan temper tantrum of epic proportions. Sure Nylander can score, but he can't really defend.
    Canucks are the number one team in the league for a reason. Give them credit for locking the game down and winning.

    • @ajbolt7
      @ajbolt7 4 месяца назад

      Yeah we're well over halfway through the season here. It's not like the Blackhawks just scored 6 on the Leafs, these are the Canucks who are statistically the best goalscorers in the NHL this year. The Canucks did exactly what they've done for 31 wins now--they capitalized on high danger chances as they always do, and they locked down with the defence to protect the lead in the 3rd. Demko didn't have to make miracle saves until it was literally a 3 man advantage, beyond the D's control.
