A piece away was a 10m player named Jack Eichel while Vegas was a perennial cup contender
They weren't even in the league long enough to be called a perennial cup contender lol
@@JTAPtv more both cups and playoff series wins in 6 years than Toronto has had in what like 50 years?
@@thepolishprince851 I'm not a Toronto fan so idc. When they got eichel they were not a perennial cup contender
Marner is a weird player. He's elite but his value doesn't sound as high as you hope it is.
These guys don't have a clue, there just guessing.
Look up what PL Dubois got traded for with one year left.
Having Montreal trying really hard to get a decent french canadian player really drove the price up, is Marner real name Miche Marnier by any luck ?
Value is based on two things, price and performance. Marner is elite but he's paid as an elite player. So he's not outstanding value. A high value player is always going to warrant more in trade then a guy that makes what he should.
@exturkconner agreed. I don't see the leafs getting an absolute package of elite players back for Marner who is UFA in one year. If they do good for them. But his value is subjective right now.
That trade 'proposal' with Vegas is an absolute joke 😂. No way Vegas makes that deal.
Shea Theodore straight up for Auston Matthews, *maybe*.
“By the way, Mitch is going to fetch a lot of stuff”
Sure thing there sparky, keep thinking that
Well, he actually should. But the way Leafs Nation has focused their anger and pounded on him since they got eliminated, they've diminished his trade value immensely. Just stupid.
@@tonylloy327
No one is giving anything of value.
Just wait a year and sign him just for money.
Why would any team give up assets and do Toronto a favor?
@@lordrayden3045 a) You don't know if he'll be available next summer, he and the Leafs could have a change of heart and do a deal or he could get traded later in the season and extend with that team. b) everything is time sensitive, if you're a contending team and you can get Marner now then you have incentive to do that and not to wait. Plus a trade can free up cap room on that team's end, which is something that the Leafs might be interested in since they will still be contending (think the Jets getting Vilardi, Iafallo, etc. back for Dubois and the Flames getting Huberdeau and Weegar for Tkachuk). c) very few players of Marner's age and talent become available at all in today's NHL d) Marner is incentivized to sign an 8 year extension post-July 1. If he goes to free agency he almost certainly isn't getting that 8th year
Extending Hanifin was to replace Martinez not Theodore 😂
Definitely. Except all they do is go up to the cap. How do they fit in Theo at 8-9?
@@safertobeanonymous2224 worry about that next offseason meanwhile the cap will have gone up probably another 5m from the expected 87.7m upcoming season.
@@safertobeanonymous2224 Vegas play with Salary Cap turned off.
@michaelbacon8698 I'm a vgk fan and shea was my coach in seattle, but they will very likely trade Shea especially if they want to keep marchy.
@@shinyuta I doubt they would let a stud 28 year old Theodore go because they want to get a 33 year old Marchessault signed..no matter how good of a year he had, there is a cliff coming soon for him at that age
Imagine believing youll get multiple pieces - nevermind multiple NHL roster players - for Marner.
Leafs media is just as delusional as their fans. Nowhere but Toronto does Marner have trade value. Do the Leafs think no one else pays attention to what type of player Marner is?
Basically, you need one quality piece back plus capspace and a future pick or prospect.
That's probably the most likely type of return if he is traded, there's value in the capspace especially if they can sign someone like Montour or Pesce.
Marner isn't waiving his NTC and leaves after next season and the leafs will get squat for him....can't wait
Yep.
Why would a team give assets when they can get him for just money next year
It'd be nice if there was a rule that you couldn't give NTC's unless you signed the player 2mil under the market value.
I think there'd be less those unmovable contracts.
Calculating the "real market value" would be tough though.
That would actually be what Leafs Nation kinda deserves with the way they've turned on him.
Marner to Detroit. we have just the d man for you.. Justin Holl.
What about Moritz seider
With how Leaf fans talk about Marner it seems like they would do that trade too
@RyanJones4444 lol Sieder isn't going anywhere 😂 that's borderline delusional to even suggest Yzerman would move him.
🤣
🙄🙄🙄
why do i have membership privileges and icon...? wtf i better not get charged for this
edit it says gift membership so thank you mystery gifter
Well now i want one
So when you're a seller on Marner, you're picking and choosing what players you want back from other teams and you want to save on cap space. I don't think that's how this works. A closer trade scenario is more like a Joe Thornton trade where Boston got a few smaller pieces back, and you're not getting full value back...
Let alone Marner can choose where he wants to go.
It’s not at all how it works
Hilarious to watch the delusion
@@markiv2942
And that?
Mitch Marner, the player Babcock sussed out years ago, the player who needed a non injury time away from hockey years ago at Christmas, the player who started pouting in the playoffs, one of the core 4 who go silent in the playoffs, realistically the Leafs want to dump this player badly are not in the drivers seat for any trade. Teams are not giving up their best players for Mitch.
Bunch of lies.
doesnt mitch have the most points in playoffs out of the core 4?
@@hybaaaa yup
It's all true that Marner is the least disappointing of the 'core four' in playoffs, and that many of the things that are rumored to have happened in the past are just that...RUMOURS. But nevertheless, all the noise in Leafs Nation about dumping him is not exactly putting Leafs' management in any kind of a decent position to be getting 'fair value' in return. If Marner refuses to waive his no movement clause and then walks away as a UFA next year, Leafs Nation only has itself to blame for turning on a guy who at many times has been the Leafs MVP. None of it makes any sense, except that Leafs fans refuse to stop worshiping Matthews, and they know they can't move Tavares, so Marner becomes the target by default. But their anger is focused in the wrong places, IMO.
@@tonylloy327 No team is going to make decisions on what media or fans are saying. They make decisions based on their own staff.

Preds are a sensible destination for the following reasons:
1. Predators have plenty of cap space
2. Toronto needs a goalie and the Preds could trade them Saros (who makes only $5m next year) as part of the package. Preds have Askarov coming up anyway
3. Tennessee has no state income tax and players enjoy both low taxes and the nightlife aka preferred destination - Marner would likely waive ntc
4. Predators need offense
5. Nashville is in the Western conf
It's a win for both organizations.
So if you're the Preds and you STILL have to play regular season games - who exactly is their starting goalie? Askarov is 21...you're not throwing him into the fire just because. You still need a full time NHL-calibre goalie.
I'll take Askarov + for Marner

@@leaf16nut solid free agent singing
6. NOPE. There's no win for Marner and it's HIM to decide. And that's what counts. He wants a team that can win Stanley Cup. Nashville will compete whether to get into playoffs or not.
Chicago won't trade for Mitch. They want to build through the draft for 3 or 4 years, no big splash right now.
Why on earth Mitch would go to Chicago?
@markiv2942 did you forget the blackhawks drafted bedard?
Who has no trade clause on Leafs?
Five players (Marner, Tavares, Rielly, Auston Matthews, William Nylander) have no-movement clauses. Another three (Calle Jarnkrok, David Kampf and Jake McCabe) have modified no-trade
A vast majority of NHL teams would love to have Mitch Marner on their team because he’s an elite playmaker, plays on the powerplay and penalty kill, is super exciting, will pack their arenas, etc. Yes, in the playoffs, he’s scared of being bodychecked, but some teams will still want him.
GM Brad Treliving ought to get Marner to submit a list of teams he’s interested in being traded to and let there be a bidding war! The LA Kings would love to have him.
Why would a team sign a player who is afraid of playing in the playoffs?
Avs fan here: it sounds crazy, but if 'Rantanen for Marner' was starting point, what else would be thrown in for both teams to approve such a trade?
You're over valuing Marner.
Think Monahan deal.... they might have to pay someone to take that contract.
Love to see him in Jersey, and I'm sure we have something to offer.
Never gonna happen
Leafs fans believe they will receive something good in exchange for Mitch Marner and Everybody else knows that nobody is interested in getting Marner Contract. A guy who is well known through the league as a Missing player in Action (MIA) when the playoff start.
And after the year they don’t have to give anything up for him
So I know this will never happen, but a team that has a lot of futures(in terms of signed for 1+years) and good young dmen is buffalo. They also need goal scoring. It could also make sense for a player that enjoys playing close to home
Unlikely it will happen that way. They also have something like 23mill in cap space
Ding ding ding we have a winner. This was my pick too a few weeks ago when the wheels first went into motion. Will be interesting to see how the saga plays out.
I am an Avs fan and I would not hate them going after Marner. I think it's a perfect situation for Marner. He doesn't need to be the guy, it won't be media hell and he will play in their top six with either MacKinnon or Raantanen.
Isn’t Theodore the same type of player as Rielly? Leafs need a RHD Shut down guy
Anyone who is a legitimate top 4 defenceman would be a welcome addition. They need someone who can take some pressure off of Rielly. He really hasn't had that level of a partner, or even someone who can play those minutes consistently. Pesce might be available as a UFA, he would be a nice addition but they need a major upgrade on the back end.
Comparing Rielly to Theodore is delusion at its peak
How about Washington ? They desperately need offense and get younger, I just don't know if they would be willing to trade Tom Wilson and TVR for him
Zero chance Washington trades Wilson especially since his brand new contract hasn't even started yet. I do think Washington is interested though considering Carbery was his coach and Sandin his teammate. Washington has a massive amount of salary cap space coming available after this upcoming season.
Wait and get him as a FA for free. If it is a trade GMs are going to take advantage of the situation and lowball Toronto.
Amazing how many people forget what Winnipeg got for Dubois from LA with one year left. Let’s stop the nonsense talk here.
if more than one meaningful team (to Marner) wants him, you needn't worry about lowballing
I doubt any team would trade for him without an extension being part of the deal
@@disinformationworld9378
Yes, but we are talking about the Leafs, the biggest joke of a franchise in all of professional sports history.
I think that's a good reason to think it's gotta be to Vegas for Theodore+. Anyone wanting Marner is probably going to want to negotiate with him first, to get him in on a new contract. Leafs can then ask to negotiate with Theodore in return.
That said, personally, I still think all of this much too complicated to expect them to do anytime soon. If it happens, it'll be in August, not July 2. I wouldn't be surprised if Marner winds up just signing an extension with the Leafs.
This is why I continue to say Marner is going to win a cup before the Leafs after he is traded.
Chicago works if Jones at 75% straight up for Mitch. Gives leaf’s 3 mil of cap and jones will be better on a better team. Jones is over paid at 9.5 but at 7?
3 way deal: Marner goes to (insert team here), Maple Leafs get Erik Cernak from Tampa Bay, Tampa bay gets draft picks. Tampa needs room to keep Stamkos. Right now they don’t have the room, but moving Cernak makes sense, and Toronto needs a solid defenseman. He’s got 2 cups and came up through the Lightning system, worked with McDonagh, Sergachev, and Hedman, and coached by John Cooper. He’s also 26 years old, so he’s going to be good for a number of years. I think he’d be a good fit.
How does trading Cernak for Marner open up cap space?
I know Toronto fans will hate this and why would they deal with Ottawa, but would Chychrun + Batherson + Bostons 1st round pick for Marner make sense for Toronto?
Vegas also has to make a call on Marchessault and Stephenson. Both are UFAs on Canada Day.
You know how the Leafs make trades then later realize how bone-headed it was?
These guys have awful takes regularly. The only reason you trade a prime 100 pt scorer is because he disappears in the playoffs when it matters most. Why would a contender do that? 16 is not the missing piece for a contender.
my arm chair gm mock trade idea - 3 team trade...
toronto receives - s.jones + k.johnson
columbus receives - marner
chicago receives - #4 overall.
The biggest issue with the Vegas trade is a simple fact. Marner for Theodore means Vegas is eating 5M. This says they are losing Theodore and Marner is supposed to replace Marchessault. Marner is an elite playmaker but he can't fit the goal scoring niche Marchessault is filling.
I can see them moving Theodore but not for a Marner sized cap hit.
Anyone remember Mats and his NMC. Marner will say the same thing ‘FU I’m staying till the end of my NMC contract’
I think Toronto should look to Ottawa, Marner for Batherson and Chychurn or something like this. They get an extra depth winger and a top 4 D-man
Marner and Robertson for Theodore, Thompson and Roy
Trade with sabres for defence ?
a very big no thanks, our blueline is stacked and it makes zero sense to go get an overpaid Marner for just 1 year and give up a huge piece..he is not even worth giving future considerations for at that insane cap hit
No thanks we're trying to build for a playoff team. We don't need a malcontent who disappears in the post season.
wing Marner, center Petterson, Tkachuk have identical age, goals, assists, plus-minus, salary, just Tkachuk with much lower shooting %. All three would be top player/ scorer on half the teams in the League. Marner could feed center Miller and Boeser, Petterson (6'2, hardest shot) could center wing Nylander.
Trades are inherently always trades for contracts.
Aside from the improvements a team needs on the ice, what all involved teams ALWAYS want are better contracts under their cap structure.
So naturally, one-on-one, you would only trade:
Bad for bad,
good for good contracts.
Of course there's no such rule, but if you're worse off contract wise after a trade, you'll at least want compensation within that trade, until it's fair again (draft picks, salary retained, etc).
Sometimes when hearing trade ideas I find myself thinking that GM's can only ever slowly improve their overall contracts architecture.
If they are smart and got the right expertise they might quickly improve their teams ON-ICE (short term), while still dealing with an overload of really really bad contracts long term that might become even more of an overload because these short term on-ice improvements cost them.
As a Leafs fan I'm always afraid that that's exactly them. I might be totally wrong with that whole contracts theory and multiple bad contracts might be solved faster than I think. In that case I'd still like to know what experts think are good or bad contracts on the Leafs and why they think a specific bad contract is actually moveable.
I wouldn't trade Marner until February. He won't bring much in return NOW (certainly no Theodore). February is when GM's are likely to overpay. Today the Leafs would rather have to pay compensation, or so it feels.
why would klingberg sign a 775,000 in toronto?
Leafs are not winning any marner trade. Thats assuming he will waive his no trade clause. Marner has huberdeau written all over him and the NHL teams know it.
LOL, wrong.
What are you basing this off of?
hardly. Marner is 3 years younger and has a longer history of scoring lots of points. also, Marner gets to choose where he goes, Huberdeau didn't. that matters. the value of Marner is that he makes other good/great players better

You need to all brace yourselves for the possibility that Mitch stays for another year. And no "he's going to play in fourth line and fans will hate him" won't cut as reason why he would be traded. If there isn't deal available to destination he wants, there's nothing Leafs can do and it will be just like before. It's CHILDISH to think you force player with no-trade clause to leave with example for 4th line demotion, it would mean that no player IN ENTIRE LEAGUE would like go to Leafs and you jeopardize relationship with all the players.
