Hey guys!! Just a reminder that these are my personal tips that has helped me create my own environments, so it’s possible it may seem subjective. Hopefully you pick up a tip or 2 that will make your landscapes better! Next week will be top tips for painting PORTRAITS! 🌱 🌸My NIMAVERSE update on Patreon is live! Giving a free mystery character pins for my Patrons ☺️ www.patreon.com/Rossdraws Hope you guys enjoy it and stay healthy!! 2020 is off to a crazy start lol
How do you figure out what color you want to use to draw your line art for portraits? You usually pick one color. So how do you choose THAT specific color to draw the WHOLE portrait with these other colors, that you'll paint with, that need to work well with it?
Guys, he may have glossed over the technicalities, but a man needs his bread and butter. If he makes a 2 hour video showing all his methods to us, how is he going to get patreons who donate and get extensive tutorials? Despite being limited, the tips are quite solid. It's up to our practice to refine them.
Well, a thorough tutorial every now and then, like two times a year or something, would actually help gain more patrons because everyone will know how a full tutorial looks like and would want more of them 🤷🏻♀️
Personally, I would want to live in an enviroment filled with huge bubbles and loads of floating mountains flourised with trees. The bubbles would have been naturally produce by nearby waterfalls and people would take advantage of it's size to use it as transportation to reach their houses in the trees. It could reach certain heights and would only pop once it hits the ground/flat surface. Please note that it is 2:00 a.m for me, so if there is any error or it's sounds too weird, I'll let future me respond or somethingg
You made me remember about One Piece, there is an island in the anime that has bubbles coming from the floor and the people use it to their advantages, like putting heavy things on the bubbles to carry them more easily, there are more ways they can use them, but I can't remember now.
Would love to see more on landscapes. Things like how to do rocks and mountains, grass, trees, etc. I'd really like to develop my fantasy landscape skills.
Geologist here who tries to reconstruct ancient landscapes by studying sedimentary rocks. This is INCREDIBLY helpful for artwork in scientific papers, thanks!
would anyone recommend start drawing landscapes traditionally first? I usually work digitally but I've been trying to finish a drawing of mine for a speed paint video and I can only get the characters right, or maybe I need to try more brushes.... what do you think?
Personally, I like drawing the shapes and shadows of landscapes in traditional sketches for practice. But when I use digital, I slowly build the shapes while experimenting the colors. So whatever suits your tastes! ^^
I'd say get the basics down digitally, and then try traditional. Traditional drawing is typically harder so it'll be a great way to refine your skills! :D
I recommend using both to draw, of course you don't need to do a piece using both, but never stay just in digital or traditional, if you think that you can draw a better landscape traditionally go for it and then scan it after.
Leannlux Cristobal if I didn’t have a brain I couldn’t type the comment in the first place. See? Brains ain’t smart, you can’t even think logically. Humans aren’t smart bc if they where then this world wouldn’t be fucked up.
Oh snow sounds so good rn. I love how moody snowy days are and things just look so different in snow and places are nee and exciting yet calm and beautiful. The snow fields of BotW sound wonderful for me rn.
I have been reading graphic novel almost my whole life. I love graphic novel because I love to look their art how their art of character, the colouring, the background character, I love it but your art, the character, the background your art have kick all graphic novel art I've been reading feels like whole other level. Your drawing and colouring make me wanna dance on flat land with beautiful grasses and flowers. It's making me fall from the sky with big smile and shout wooohooo. Your the best. I wanna watch more 😍
The elemental environment that I would be in is a beautiful field with long grass with the mountains in the in the distance. Whenever the breeze blows, you'll feel free. I think that's the best for me anyways. Also, Ross I love your videos and you inspire me! Thank you!
I would live in a spring-ish grassland with waterfall, lakes, and mountain surrounding with a galactic sky, a paradise that is too wonderful to be true... love landscapes and also your work
I really like your lesson videos! They are so helpful and I learn a lot! But the most important thing is that they are not boring. A lot of videos for learning how to draw can be so boring, I can't keep watching them for long. But your videos are so interesting I can watch them all!
To me all those tips are great, but like for me I go to paint a landscape and I just don't know what or how to render them. I see a lot of artist just 'render' stuff with no explanation. I'd like to see tips or rendering or improving details. Luv u❤️
Im sure there are some good books out there that might help you! I personally have not gotten my hands on a copy yet but I heard Scott Robertson's "How to Render" was helpful to a lot of people.
I would live in a Foggy forest. Where is a lot of moist and a lot of trees. I feel like it's the best that nature gets. Dark brown is one of the prettiest colors, and how the green of the trees go with it. That's exciting.
I would like to live in a slightly cool environment, but in a large hole underground with many exits or entrances to other elemental environments; with many elemental bunnies to live with all of them
I can’t say this is the first time I’ve watched this, and I bet it’s not the last. You can get so many more takeaways if you rewatch it again a little while later. Thank you!
I came to this video unintentionally because it automatically followed another, but your explanation won me over and I was curious to hear more. Congratulations on the incredible communication. I learned something for my videos.
I would be so cool to relax on a tropical beach, sort of closed off from the world, like a small inlet surrounded by high cliffs and palm trees. Thanks for these tips! They are really helpful and I definitely want to practice drawing more landscapes!
Everytime I see Ross's progress in these illustration, it really feels like he has magic poured into these pieces. I find it really amazing how he turns a blank canvas into something so gorgeous. Drawing background and landscape has always been one of my weakest points in drawing so this really helped a lot and inspired me to work harder in my art journey. Hope to see more art tips and keep up the good work Ross!
When we are talking about environments that really spoke to us, I'm always gonna remember the floating mountains on Pandora . They are absolutely magnificent and stunning, just as much as they are calming. I could always imagine living there in a small hut and gazing at the vast horizon🌄 But I think they could definitely use some more less dangerous flora and fauna 😂 Another great environment would be a cave filled with old rocks covered in moss. In between them small rivers and lakes and on the shores dozents of lilies would bloom🌊🌸
I've following these videos for over a year and find them all very insightful and creative. I hope that one day I could actually use these videos as helpful references
I would absolutely love to live in a rain environment, maybe like a planet that is always raining! Then have the whole space be very hydro powered to utilise the natural resources of the planet and also prevent flooding, this may or may not be a part of the story I’m developing at the moment 😅 and its all floating islands and water beneath, a very happy community and life is situated around the weather conditions with an entire seperate community living under the surface in the water, kind of Atlantis inspired but more normalised and tech motivated, I ramble sorry, I’m very excited for my own story since it’s getting close actuality, so I can relate to Ross’ hype about Nima at the moment, can’t wait for it to come out!!! 🙌🏽
wanna live in a world like those portrayed in ghibli movies, buildings tucked together with connecting streets and bridges. its like EVERY momment of your life is laid out arround you at once... like a city. streets full of building made of days: the day you were born, the day you die, the day you fell in love, the day that love ends. the whole city is build from triumph, and heartbreak, and boredom and cutting your toenails! its the best place you'll ever be in your life!
I would want to live in a Jungle. I'm having incessant, repetitive jungle dreams. Warm wet breeezes, warm enough to be in your skimmies at night, outside, bare feet in the grass.... Yes a volcano in the distance just oozing lava.. but all of the secrets of nature speaking through the flowers, trees, grass, vines, giant leaves, and hut like structures with people who live with nature. So, not just any jungle, but a jungle where people respect nature as their guardian. I can feel that in my bones ;). PS i just became your patron.. I'm an artist and i'm loving your videos. Thank you! xo
I would wanna live in like a combined landscape. I love to ski, so snowy mountains would be cool. But I mean like hot snow. It´s weird to think about but would be awesome!
I'm a writer, and I can draw a mean stick person, but I honestly came here for research for a short script I'm writing. I really just wanted to actually see how art like this is created. Like where you start and how it all comes together. I'm glad I saw this first. It was educational 😁
Really helpful tips, i've been re-vamping some worlds that I have and you so happen to be pushing content that benefits this, really appreciate it man.
Ross you are my biggest inspiration and why I started to draw seriously this year. I love this type of informative content from you, I hope you do more in the future 💕 much love from Canada.

Absolutely love this, but I can already feel some people coming in the comments to be negative towards Ross and how he does his work. Just keep up the great work Ross everyone teaches art differently and in their own way. That's what I love about him and many others.
Wow the landscape looks amazing!! These tips were extremely helpful!! I personally would love to live in an underwater world. I've always loved water ever since I was a smol bean and I've been swimming since I was six! I feel like the ocean is just the perfect place for me.
Thank you for the tips! Would love a more detailed tutorial in the future! It's been pretty cold and crazy here, so I wouldn't mind going to a warm, relaxing beach with the sound of soft waves on the sand.
Thank you, Ross, for all of these super useful tips! I don't know where I would be in my art journey without you! ❤️ Edit: I would love to live in a beautiful forest next to a meadow & waterfall :D
Honestly, I would love in a enviroment where every color that you see is so vibrant. Trees, grass, flowers and etc. Is bursting with colors like an alien planet.
For me it'd be like a marianas trench but arctic version, sorta in the bottom of the sea were the glaciers start growing. You explain everything sO WELL!! Thank you for your videos!!! ❤️❤️
My element would be cold and more controlling type maybe like of Antarctic. First it seems lifeless like nothing exist there but looking carefully you find so much life thriving there. It is so beautiful with white landscape
Depending on my mood right now, I kind of want to live inside a mysterious magical forest.... I love forests especially when you lie down below a tree and relaxing and watching the leaves swaying with a bright sunlight behind it and it makes more interesting if there are magical spirits that you can play around with... Oh! And I think it would be even better if one of the magical spirits could help you fly around and takes you for a tour around the forest
Thanks for the usefull tips! I would take myself to a crystal cave structure, surrounded by the glowing beauty of the crystal, and protected by the shadows c:
I don't do digital painting but this was wonderfully informative.I think I'll do that color dodge with a light glaze. Great lesson, I learnt so much, even on things that I thought I already knew!!
Landscapes are a huge problem to me, and this totally helped me get into the right perspective. Thanks! :D The elemental environment I would be picking is earth. I am picturing a cave with an undergound lake and some bioluminescent mushrooms giving light, growing on huge columns of stalagmites, dotted with tiny crystals, reaching up the cave ceiling and along the cave floor. Air currents flow about making the place cool for a cave. Also get some moss-like plants growing around that doesn't feed off of sunlight.
It feels like I learn more from you rather than I did in school. Thank you for uploading these incredible videos. You're spreading the joy of art and that's beautiful!
Aye, that two close one far is a powerful little tidbit. So cool when one casual mention can change the way you think about subtleties. I already live in a mountain forest so uh... At sea somewhere... Maybe sailing around Thailand/Vietnam/Philippines/China because of the beautiful geography around the islands. Edit: And same, with my dog even though he's not big on swimming (profile picture)
I've been watching your videos on-and-off for years so seeing you finally have your characters be in a book makes me so excited. I've wanted to know what they're about forever and now, I finally do! Yaaaaay! Good luck with the release!

Exactly! It’s not his job to teach us absolutely everything, then we would all have mini Ross styles. It’s part of OUR art journey to refine them!

I read this literally seconds before Ross asked what environment we would like to live in. I was more than a little confused ngl. XD
haha, I thought of meet the robinsons when you said that.
So you mean the another world
Like those stuff in isekai anime
You made me remember about One Piece, there is an island in the anime that has bubbles coming from the floor and the people use it to their advantages, like putting heavy things on the bubbles to carry them more easily, there are more ways they can use them, but I can't remember now.

Do what you're more comfortable with, I haven't done landscapes yet but if I do I would try it digitally
Personally, I like drawing the shapes and shadows of landscapes in traditional sketches for practice. But when I use digital, I slowly build the shapes while experimenting the colors. So whatever suits your tastes! ^^
