oops it's been like 2 years since my last environment art video. I never do these anymore since they never get any views initially, but always end up doing better than average long term so here we go again :) Also low key wanted to work on environments it's been a while, need to do more of these it's the most relaxing thing ever you should try it. right now.
I know I'm the smallest part of your public, but I dropped out of watching a bunch of your videos since I went torwards environments 😂 WE EXIST, DON'T TOTALLY GIVE UP ON US MARC!
Don't forget guys that Marc is a very experienced painter and can do lots of steps on the go, like gauging the colors, coming up with a composition, determining the perspective of the objects relative to the viewer and the way light interacts with things to make shadows. It's totally okay if you're slower or don't get it right the first, or even the tenth time. If you seem to be having problems with a specific part of the painting (for example, I tend to make my values jump all over the place), try to practice it separately (for example, I put a bunch of different colored cubes in a scene and try to get the colors and values as correct as possible). This way, you are focusing only on the problematic part, instead of dealing with everything at once.
This is helpful for me as I am trying very hard to re-learn many things with my non-dominant right hand. So much of this kind of work used to be much easier for me using my natural dominant left hand; until I had a stroke which paralyzed my whole left side( can’t physically move my left hand at all). So thank you Marc for your instruction and advice on these important aspects of creating art;since I’m starting over from many years of normal work and practice; every bit helps! 👍🏻
Hey bud I wish you the best in learning to draw with your non-dominant hand, and wish you good health. It sounds like you have had a harder go then I, but I have basically had to teach myself to be ambidexrious due to carpel tunnel threatening my right hand. Basically its been like that for a couple of decades, it gets really bad, I get checked out and told its not bad enough for the operation, so I taught myself to draw with both hands. The best thing i can recommend is draw with proper form, draw from your shoulder, it makes it much easier on your hands and the muscle memory for nondominent had learning seems smoother.
The clouds casting shadow seems like one of those things that should be super obvious... but this is probably the first time I've even thought about that. It definitely adds another dimension. I'm probably never going to use a clear sky again just so I can add those cloud shadows lol. Reminds me of when I was a kid on the playground and the clouds were moving so fast that you could follow the shadow on the ground as it moves across the grass.
This 9 minutes long video was way more useful than most hour+ long tutorials/courses I've seen so far. Great job, you should do more environment stuff!
I'm so glad I found you randomly on shorts. I was with a HUGE art block, and then I found that video of yours where you talk about fundamentals. Im currently studying perspective and environment building, and oh my gosh, this is the most fun thing I ever studied. With you, I finally found my art style, I've only watched some of your videos, but I already feel like I've got better on art. I really appreciate how we can fins that much information for free. But ofc, we can learn much more with your class. I would 100% buy your course If my currency was dollars lol.... Tbh, i wil probably save some money this year to buy it, my dream is to work with art, so nothing more fair than paying for it lolol.
Many thanks as always for this excellent content!! 🤩 I had a first whirl at this but have come back to reference this a few times now and gonna give it another go. ✍️ This video’s extremely satisfying to watch! 😌
Hi Marc, I followed along with this video and it was fun. Thank you! Also thank you for the great art program. I purchased it last year and am working on Term 3. As a total beginner I’ve been learning a lot and find it very valuable and well put together. Thank you very much. I also learn a lot from your RUclips videos so thank you for that as well. Wishing you all the best and continued enjoyable art making.
I looooooved this lesson. Its always such a gem when you release a new video, such a wealth of knowledge; and learning what not to add and where is greatly helpful to me as i overcomplicate by hyper-detailing where not necessary. Thank you!
Environment video! I love it. I know you're more of a character guy but I really appreciate that you do those too, I love drawing environments and I'll take any advice I'll find 💖 There's just something special about drawing epic scale things or scenes that tell a story..
thank you so much! im going to be buying the art school soon before the month discount ends. i am someone who has always enjoyed drawing art, but only wanting to take it seriously now. im always drawing in class! im always wondering why there are certain colors in certain places! i love dynamic lighting! really excited to join art school :)
OH amazing, I've been enjoying drawing landscapes with oil brushes on procreate, and had a ton of fun with that. I love your clouds, looking forward to yoinking that :O that cloud shadow looks incredible
As soon as I will finish the pile of courses I have gathered threw the years (only a few left, yey!), I am going to grind every art class from you channel. This looks super fun.
Thankyou so much for this video, I was just thinking about trying my hand at landscapes again! Would also love to see one centered around making city streets and buildings 🙏✨
I’ve had a coop where I need to paint digitally landscapes, and I do mainly character art, so this’ll come in handy Notes to review for myself Overall, make things into steps of big to small. All elements in a painting are really just shapes that are sculpted with round and hard edges, sometimes manipulating the transitions with texture brushes or whatever is overlapping in front of it. Use the shapes as a means of guiding the viewer to a focal point through the painting like a story. And focus on foreground details with the rest of the mid to background being more silhouette. The rest outside of the frame can be implied with shading which gives volume to everything. - Big overall shapes first - Aim for a focal point in the drawing with leading lines and values for story - put details and texture in transitions mainly in the foreground; dead grass, dirt patches, etc. - clouds are big ploomy round shapes with some air streaks that gave the shadow of the atmosphere on the bottom, and cast onto the ground - Rocks are also ploomy but can take which ever shape with hard edges in shading transition, and the base can have grass overlapping; use rocks and other elements to break up the grass overtaking the scene - trees and rocks are good for silhouette. Add branches with shading. Think about what is off camera as if you are in the landscape
Marc thanks for every work of yours! I really like the way you teach and it helps me a lot. Will you post any schedule + exercises video for us these days? Started the character creation one recently and already anxious for the next one 😁.
Love to see videos about landscapes! Really catching the vibes of your illustrations but if I should say something, maybe for the trees and the bushes you could do some borders a bit less edgy with adding some "details" like you do with the grass! But I really like your style in painting! Looks good!
Great timing! Posted only an hour ago! I really needed this, i have been lacking of knowledge about how to be good at drawing environments since I've been practicing drawing backgrounds on one point perspective(also followed your tips about it) and i found out that i wasn't really good at it, and that i needed to practice more...this would definitely help. Thanks Marc!
I get the feeling that you can read my mind in what video to do next 🧐 I just recently wanted to try Monster Hunter atmosphere/environment art, or even spice up my personal animation learning by making simple landscapes to base them on. And then boom. He is here. You is here.
How about making dangerous and treacherous land for the adventurous heart 😈 hahaha i think this will be a challenge to make. Thank you for the environment tutorial marc, i've been waiting for a new one for so long ❤
I use your brushes on the daily, so I immediately noticed you had a new one in there for this painting. Can't wait to grab the new additions!!! Are there new ones in the basic and advanced sets?
I just got done watching your old video background study several weeks ago. I was thoroughly inspired! But this one, man oh man you make it look so easy! I've been struggling with environments for as long as I could draw. They always look flat or squished no matter how I set the scene. I cannot think in 3-dementions so it's hard for me to visualize how it should look, what size something should be to fit into the scene, or where it should be placed. Always confusing and hard for me to the point I get frustrated and stop working on the piece.
Yeah this is kinda what I did the last time I tried to "paint" an environment, though I didn't do the focus thing or the more rough look that doesn't look flat.. Idk I guess I just need to practice to get that intuitive feel for where shadows and surface differences should be
Me, who just casually searches for "draw cozy environments" out of a whim and gets immediately suggested a video by Marc. Don't get me wrong, I'm not complaining at all, on the contrary. Because I've had a (very precise) image of a landscape in my head for years now, a kind of "mental vacation resort" if you will. That I've been wanting to finally immortalize on the digital screen for a long time
So the trick is really about brushes. To make rain, grass and small details, we have to create our own brushes 🤔 That's interesting. Thank you for the tips and amazing artwork. Looks exactly like those landscapes we find in videogames nowadays.
Not really, everything a brush does you can technically do yourself too, it just is more convenient to use brushes. Like for exemple when drawing grass, if you draw every single grass blade yourself you can get to the same result you would have if you used a grass brush instead, it'll just take way longer. I barely use custom brushes, not that I don't want to or despise using brushes, I'm just too used to draw everything with the same hard brush it makes me forget that brushes could save me time until I spent hours drawing grass the old fashion way :')
As a skykid player (sky children of the light) I always want to do so many fanarts and creating like new spaces ideas of the game, but I actually struggle a lot, specially with colours and perspectives 😭
I've been struggling with combining drawing a charactar with the background. Do you have any tips how to correctly draw a character on the different backgrounds?
oops it's been like 2 years since my last environment art video. getting less views is better than having nothing at all...there are always people who need these type of vids and can learn from it
I've been working on environments and landscapes recently so I can get some school assignments done, so this is great timing
I only do character art, but I should really spread out into environments if I want to make my own stories someday. Thanks so much for this video!
Love the environmental design videos please keep doing them they’re great!!!!!

You have no idea how much of a lifesaving this video was because im literally working on a piece with my first attempt at an enviorment ever.
This 9 minutes long video was way more useful than most hour+ long tutorials/courses I've seen so far. Great job, you should do more environment stuff!
Awsome video Marc, could you do city backgrounds? I would love to watch it too ❤
Agreed with this question! Yes, please!
Up

I'd love an instructional video explaining when you should cell shade vs, soft blended shading and highlighting...
The better and easy environment tutorial, thanks
Thank you Marc, you're always The Best! Just why I do so detailed trees when those are so amazing!
This is exactly what I needed😮💨
Love your videos man, motivates me to continue trying and practice

Marc strikes agaim with the.perfect timing, decided yesterday to focus on environments more and this gift dropped

Wow it's like you read my mind. I wanted to try painting environments and here it is! Thank you!
Thank you so much for this tutorial! It was hugely helpful to me in a project I'm working on. Subscribed!

Your videos are great, each one taught me at least one new thing.
It looks so easy when you do it.
Thanks for your teaching❤
It's been a few times that Marc seems to read my mind and release THE video on what i have been working on. Super helpful!
As someone who used to struggle with environments a lot, I see this as an absolute win
Obrigada amigo 🤝🏻💖 você é um amigo!!!
