  • Hello! In this video I'm going to talk about a cool feature in Daz Studio called the L.I.E. or Layered Image Editor. The L.I.E. can add layers to your character's textures. It is great for adding extra features to skin such as make-up, tattoos, freckles, scares, or wounds. I'll show you an example of how to make eyeliner to a character from scratch.

    Very very fantastic guide.
This was easy to understand as a beginner & you definitely answered questions other video guides failed to do.
    Thank you 🎉

Thanks a lot for your tip on speeding up the layered image editor! Maybe what opens in 60 seconds opens in 2 seconds.

Your very welcome! It does make quite a difference. LIE is awesome, but naturally really slow!

Hey! Something to know, You don't have to use the UV Map as a guide... Just open up one of the character's texture maps in GIMP and use that as your under layer to create your new make-up or other feature. This might be more useful when creating something like a scar...

I've read for the tattoos if you use a png it doesn't need a mask. I'm still learning lie and when I have some extra time will use my actual tattoos as an experiment

Yes, you could use a PNG file to make tattoos. There are several ways to add them. For a PNG you would add it to the texture through GIMP or Photoshop.

This is not a GIMP tutorial but you don't lose your path, it's under the Paths tab. Also you could use the paths to trace an actual design from a real image (which is what I thought you would do) and then bring it over to the template then adjust its size to fit. Then you can copy and flip it for the other eye.

Ah, yes! GIMP is kind of like Daz... There is so much to the program and various ways to accomplish a certain task!

This has gone great for me up until the last couple of minutes - the saved file I can see in the My Library\Presets\Materials\Layered-Images Directory - but when i go into Daz Studio it is not being picked up - I checked my preferences and it has the path set for Daz Content. Any ideas?

I avoid using LIE's, as this is adding more texture maps to my vram, so instead combine the lie map and skin map in photoshop, thus reducing my memory load.

Yes, you are correct. Adding an LIE will cause your computer to work harder. Combining the LIE to the skin map works great, but one advantage to building an LIE is that you can save it and use it on any Genesis 8 character and you're not limited to the one texture map.
