  • Me again and I have a load more disjointed content for you about all sorts of crap. It's not well made, well filmed or edited properly and some of it isn't even related but its honest and a bit of fun.If it goes well Ill pass it of as viewable content!! In this video I will be covering fly press tooling and the ways I uses it in my forge. I hope to get some tooling made to help me make some hammers. I also striped a bandsaw for it hot bits and made a trailer hitch for a tractor.
    I hope you enjoy.

Daniel, You ARE an excellent blacksmith! Your videos, are very good teaching. I'm an old style blacksmith, from the 1950's and 1960's. I have never had hydraulic presses, nor welding processes, with rods. My welding, is with the forge, and working, the steel together, into the shapes and sizes, that I need. I am currently, 71 years old, and, still working, as a blacksmith, as well as, leathercraftcrafting, and woodcrafting. I have my forge, outside, at the back of my home. I am also, a teacher, of the old ways, with, an occasional student. I do not charge, for my teaching. I just want blacksmithing, to carry on, into, the future.

I bought a 4 ton fly press about six months ago and don't know how I managed all these years without one. They are a savage tool and worth every penny. I have to make more more tooling yet and the scrap bin at work is a great source for parts. 👍

Hey, good job.you are quite the skilled craftsmen Blacksmith.Purchased an old old fly press made in England sometime back it is still sitting on the floor with a special pedestal outside the shop to be welded and fabricated and such, but very very busy with other things. After your video, it is inspiring me to get my rear in gear so to speak. Thanks for the inspiration also that's a nice anvil. I have A Holthaus 220 pound one looks very similar, Itsvery old. Lots of imperfections in the manufacturing, but it's a great anvil. Keep up the good work, Look forward to other videos of yours, have a beautiful day.. Jim

You are so right! I am in the extreme Pacific Northwest and it seems like a desert for smithing equipment. I am a little jealous of the east coasters, or folks down south. It just looks like they have more items available. Good for them really.

@@danielmoss2089 Honestly, If I were inclined, I should make new "old" smithing tools. People are hungry to learn and do actual work, in this electronic heavy world. To give them good tools...well. It is a niche thing is what I suppose manufacturers would say. Not sure if I am ready to take on iron casting and machining as well as a little smithing for a personal growth challenge.
There were some fly presses available for 1500 bucks, plus freight on ebay. You just cannot nip down to the junkyard and find an old fixer here.

Hi Dan. I love anything you produce on your fly press.
I bought a fly press 2 years ago. It has a broken threaded shaft 2" from the top. The break resides just below the nut. I successfully removed the threaded shaft that was inside the top nut You have inspired me to get off my ass to grind a bevel on the broken off threaded shaft and TIG weld this back on today!!
I'm a very interest to see videos on existing tooling and future tooling you make for your fly press.

Sure do wish these things were more popular in the marketplace! Soooo expensive, even used. Supply and demand I guess, but these are SO much faster and more useful than regular hydraulic presses and even tredle hammers, etc., you'd think they would be plentiful in the USA marketplace (and thus hopefully reasonably priced). Yeah, I'm whining.😉

Liking these styles of videos, think the reality of things like this often gets forgotten and the frustration of spending afternoons getting seemingly nowhere is very real! Reassuring to know it can happen to us all! I don't know if you'd feel comfortable sharing this sort of info but a look at the behind the scenes of how you run your online shop would be very interesting! Things like setting up for production work, how things are packaged and posted, and all the aspects that make it possible to make a living from this kind of work. Another cool video, cheers!

Hey Daniel! I just discovered you this morning here on RUclips, and I have to say, your creative tool use anf ingenuity is something to aspire to. I am trying to get into blacksmithing and eventually armor smithing so I can make custom armor to decorate my home but that would be functional on a medieval battlefield. I think a fly press would be great for that sort of work especially, since it involves a lot of lower-heat press-swage work with custom swages for each piece. Your video here has awakened a bunch of ideas I didn't know I had floating around in me, so I wanted to say thank you very much for making these videos.
I have liked and subscribed, and you can bet I clicked that bell. :-) Happy forging, mate! Stay true to you and stay safe out there in the shop and in the pandemic.

Also somewhat expensive in Australia unfortunately. Rare to see a 6T press for less than $1,600.

Hi Dan. I'd love to get a fly press in the not too distant future and was wondering what would be a suitable tonnage press to go for? What size is the one you have there? Can't see the markings on it and didn't notice you mention in the video. My concrete floor wouldn't handle a power hammer and not my place to go digging and pouring giant slabs :p

Another thing actually... How heavy is your press? 100Kg? 200? I'm a bit concerned about the logistics of actually getting the thing into my workshop and up onto a stand/table. The door to my place is regular door sized, so no FLT. Also the ground is rough as hell outside the shop door, so I don't think an engine hoist would have much luck at getting it from a vehicle to the door either.

Why is the press table so short? Doesn't even come past the ram, that doesn't seem like it was built right.

some of these presses are specifically built for special purposes in industrial manufacture that ended up getting retired and have odd dimensions and capabilities.
