I've been really enjoying your work, style and content. I've worked a little bit for almost fifty years, as mechanic, machinist and such, and retired, am beginning to do it more extensively, and desperately need tongs and hammers. I've made my own before, but not near as neat or clean, and you really make them look good, as well as function. I hope to learn a good bit more, thanks much. Cheers.
Thanks Daniel this video will help me a lot mate as i don't own a power hammer . and yes it would be great to see you modify a larger production hammer by hand .cheers.
great content as ever, hammer making seems to be a higher skill -set for for someone just coming into the craft, you show it isn't beyond the keen beginner - you give hope to us all! All there best Dave
Very true sir. My 1st ever forge experience was with Daniel Moss in his hammer class in Ohio. It was the most challenging and rewarding thing ive done to date. With his instructions just about anyone should be able to get it done
Good vid. It's nice to see everybody's version of I Hand Forged hammer. Is it processes are the same but the nuances are different. Subtle differences that makes everybody's Hammer their own
Liked at ‘688’, looking forward to seeing the shop bought remake! Love the look of this hammer, but like the re-worked shop bought hammer even more! Great work!
Thanks for the video! I bought two hammer blanks, tong blanks and a drift to get started on trying to recreate it! Awesome Vid! Love the hand forged stuff. I know it takes longer so I really appreciate it. :D
@@danielmoss2089 For sure I will tag you on Instagram from my hobby page IrishSeppa. Might make a 30 sec video also so you can see the induction forge in action.
Hammer making is what I would like to be doing wonce l get enough skills with the hammer and drifting. I have a hard time keeping the drifting straight. Great video Dan.
Thank you so much for all of your content! I would never have made it as far as I have, in so short a time, with this craft if it werent for the help of your videos!
Hi Daniel, I don´t know if you´ve studied older Swedish pattern blacksmithing hammers, but these one that you make look pretty much exactly like those! Just make them slightly more front-heavy / longer and you´ll be spot on! Beautifully made, I enjoyed watching the process.
Dan, I’d love to see a video on ways to correct a crooked/offset hole after it’s been punched (like you didn’t notice it was crooked until after you punched).... thanks for all the entertainment and information, I’m headed over to mosscocraft Etsy now
You need to cool one side and then hammer on the side that is biggest (I think). It’s mentioned in an Old Hickory Forge video. I’ve forgotten which, sorry.
Great technique. I have been a few weekend courses with various people and made some things, but have never found an ideal hammer. I am not heavily built, but hammers available either seem too light, too heavy or the face is the wrong shape by being too flat, but maybe my hammer action is wrong.
Awesome vid love it how you make it look so easy..hammers is one of the things I have not tried as scares the crap out of me for some reason . May just need to bite the bullet and get some stock off you and just have a go, let me know if you got my mails
I would like to purchase one of your 2lb. cross pien hammers. Can you tell me where I can order one. Thank you. I really appreciate your videos. They are just what is new blacksmith need.
I’m curious why you even drift the hammer at all before shaping it. I’m assuming that the reason is because it is much easier to lay out your centre when it’s squared up, rather than when it is more organic. But otherwise, it seems like you could wail away and be far less carful shaping it out if you didn’t have to work around the hole? Is there more to the process?
Morning Dan, Great timing for my hammer makes. My current hammer made out of a cheap lump hammer is just not handling the harder spring. Just need my stock to make 1 or 4, little dig there Dan. All the best and keep safe.
good video dan, Ive been curious why most smiths fuller in between the hammer face and the cheeks part, does it serve any purpose? You never see it on commercial hammers, but almost constantly on hand forged hammers.
Nice hammer, I'm in process of making a similar one, but starting with round material. In thinking through the steps I find I should make appropriate tongs and an eye punch first - always handy to have the right tools before you start bashing a lump of steel. Thanks for the detailed instructional.
I'm going through the same process myself, thinking exactly the same thought. He makes nice tongs and punches, I've been scrounging steel, for the same. Semper Fi.
DAN! Its a good looking hammer, but if you are more aggressive about knocking the corners back, you can avoid it fish-mouthing when you draw the peen out. It'll save you quite a bit of time grinding and keep more mass in the peen. Trust me, I'm a blacksmith too. Cheers mate!
I didn't have any fish lips I forged them back in. I cut the face of cause it look a little long. I think I talked about it the first time I made the video but forgot in this one. It's still a great point thanks.
Daniel I'm an aspiring smith and i need a cheap easy way to forge a flattener without the use of a power hammer or wielder, have you any thoughts? I thought of converting an old sledge head, or even upsetting a RR spike into something. A reply would be appreciated or better yet a video. Thanks danny boy keep up the work

Thank you so much for this video this was very helpful, I would love it if you do make the rounding hammer reforge and fabrication videos they should great! Good job :) Also where do you get your steel for your hammers? :)
Hey Dan, wee question for you. What's the story with drawing out the cheeks? is it an aesthetic part of the design or does it help with functionality etc instead of having the hammer head go out around the eye ...big that question makes sense. I'm new to blacksmithing, love it so far and thanks for all the help you've given me so far :)
@@danielmoss2089 thanks for the honesty! I was fairly sure it wasnt aerodynamics at any rate. Cheers for all the tips, made my second ever set of tongs after watching your bolt tongs video :)
Daniel I've brought one of your Tshirts and I've got some steel if you want it its 2 blocks of just 1464 hardend steel if you want it and I'm going to purchase an ticket for the wrafffel.
So after i punch the hole, there is no isse in me forging the whole area around the hole narower before drifting. Im asking because it seems to be the easyest way of doing it, if my goal is a sheffield style doghead forgers hammer.
Most of the time if you get the majority of the forging done before the eye is formed and you won't mess it up to much. However if you do go the fuller route just take it easy. Hope that helps. I'll be make rounders in a week or so. I'll show you then.
Love the video and content. Great info. Looks very similar to a scandi. A design i would like to do for my own hammer. If only i could like it a few hundred more times..... 🙏 Blessed days now crawford out ⚒️🧙♂️
I'm starting to do some forging, I have a gas forge runing and my first attemp is to make a pair of tongs (I was hammering a piece of rebar yesteday), so I would like to know what kinf of tongs do you recommend to be the first ones to make, the most versatile for someone starting. Thanks!
I would make some v-bit tongs first. They allow you to hold square bar and they work for round bar. Once you can easily hold square, you make more tongs. Good luck with your forging.
Hi Dan bit of a random question, I’m looking to make a stand for my swage block and all the traditional ones seem very low and I’ve noticed yours is too! What do you think the ideal height would be ? I would really value your advice, many thanks Tomos
Serious question Dan. Could a person do all of this, on a striking anvil? I know we made rounding hammers before. But, as an option for others. Thanks ⚒️👍🙂
I made my first hammer with the hammer I was making, I can get the hammer to hit itself. There’s only three blacksmiths alive that know that technique and two of them are dead.

They do it for artistic purposes mostly. It also makes the cheeks quicker. It is one of those things that distinguishes a handmade hammer.
Most ball pien hammers are fullered. The head on claw hammers too.

Yes but it would have a job getting the peen like mine but it can be done.
About how long does it take you to make a hammer?
By hand about an hour to Forge. 20-30mins to grind first time 30mins to heat treat and then polish and handle another hour.
Same to make with a power hammer just the Forge is about 20-30mins depending on the hammer.
Newbie here. What’s the large metal black with different types of holes called?
Swedge block.
