If you want to eat here then go during dinner time and arrive about 30 minutes early. You're pretty much guaranteed to be in the first round of orders if you do that. I've been to Nakiryu 3 times. Changed my life and blew every other ramen I've eaten out of the water when I lived in Japan for 4 years. They're known for their Tantanmen but frankly the Shoyu ramen is better in my opinion. However, I went again after COVID and their remodel and when I went it was...different. It looks the same but the quality just wasn't what it used to be. Still a great bowl, but I ended up finding a better place I went to more often in Akasaka. Still haven't tried Ginza Hachigou or Tsuta though. I will when I go there again on vacation though.

I've been here but it took me two attempts. First time in 2017 we came for lunch and they were renovating so we walked less than a mile to the other Michelin-Starred Ramen House, Tsuta. Came back to Japan in 2019 and we came about 45 mins before opening, and we were the first ones inside! It was of course amazing. I don't remember that fancy ordering machine so that must have been added after our visit.

If they got noticed by michelin then thanks, but they are more intuitive about the common people's taste and in Asia I tell you, there's little to no tolerance if your food tastes bad. They won't file a complaint or review, they just won't come to you. "Customers talk by their feet" as the saying goes

Can see why a younger crowd as well as average westerners would love this and is given a michelin star. It strikes a good balance between preparing food cleanly (being an open kitchen in front of customers) and overall very presentable on the dining table. Though looking at how (and how long) they 'decorate' the toppings, mostly pre-cooked and refrigerated, and leaving the soup and noodles in the bowl idled for that long, real gourmets or ramen lovers may find it overhyped.

I went to Japan a couple years ago back when the exchange rate was more like $1=100 yen and these prices would be pretty normal for a fast-casual-ish type of place. Very interesting that they’re keeping prices like this with a Michelin star. Out of curiosity, I started looking on Google for current menus of places I’ve been to and it’s like inflation barely affected them over there, at least going from memory of what I think I paid like 5 years ago. Plus 1 USD is currently roughly 140 yen which makes the food look even more crazy cheap. I don’t know how they do it.
