    Juneau is the capital of the 49th state, which makes it one of the best places to start. It offers an endless display of natural and manmade wonders.
    One of the best things to do in Juneau, Alaska is to watch a whale in its natural habitat. You’ll never forget the moment you caught a glimpse of one breaching right in front of you. Wildlife enthusiasts are also likely to see a brown bear during their trip because they’re all over Admiralty Island.
    The city of Juneau is also known for its imposing mountains. Take a hike or tram up to the top of Mount Roberts or Mount Juneau. If you can’t get enough of the ice and snow after coming back down, visit the Mendenhall Glacier and nearby ice caves.
    Juneau also offers natural beauty that you can enjoy year-round. Make sure to experience the Glacier Gardens Rainforest Adventure and go to the Jenson Olson Arboretum to see beautiful flowering plants.
    Juneau has a rich history. The Alaska Folk Festival lets you watch native performances that provide a glimpse into Inuit culture. You can also visit the Last Chance Gold Museum, Juneau-Douglas City Museum, or Alaska State Museum to see how the state has grown since its founding.
    There’s no shortage of delicious seafood in Juneau, and one of the best places to get it is Tracy’s Crab Shack. If you’re thirsty afterward, take a tour of the Alaskan Brewery and Bottling Company

    As a retired Juneau resident (of 28 years), I'd have to say that this video is surprisingly very good and quite accurate. Thank you for doing a good job.

      I'm moving there on Monday, I want to go hiking and all that, but I'm moving alone, and am afraid a pack of wolves or a brown bear would wipe me out, any tips with the wildlife?

      Good choice and good luck. If you're a hiker (like I used to be), I suggest stopping by the forest service stand downtown in Centennial Hall and buying a plastic coated (to keep it dry in our rain) map of the trail systems here in Juneau (we have over 300 miles of trails here). When out hiking alone (later in the summer when the salmon are in the rivers) just make noise (sing, etc) while hiking to let the black bears know you are coming (they will kerskaddle when they know you are around). Never get between a female and her cubs. Wolves and brown bears are extremely, extremely rare in Juneau. It never rains hard here (drizzle or mist), but you have to learn to ignore the rain and get on with life. Light rain gear and dress in layers and a bottle of bear spray (mainly for psychological self assurance) and good water resistant comfortable boots (dry sox in Juneau is a luxury!). Confucius says.......when in the rain forest, you have to expect some rain in the forest. Always remind yourself, that if it wasn't for the rain it would not be as beautiful here. Alaska will surprise you.....just yesterday a river otter wandered across my deck here, just outside my window. The "wilderness" is usually just outside our back door.........literally and figuratively. It's the beauty of the land that brought me here, but it's the beauty of the people here that will keep me here. Again good luck and welcome to Juneau.@@beastcontracts8230

      @@beastcontracts8230 always keep bear spray on you just in case. As long as you are somewhat noisy when walking, bears will walk the other direction.

    Thank you very much. My parents want to move to Alaska in a few years and we were wondering where we could go. We were unsure, but when I looked at this, I was like man that looks beautiful. I’ve looked at Fairbanks. Kenai and a couple others but that does not compare to this. I’m definitely gonna talk to my parents about this. I appreciate you very much.

    Hey, number 6 was mixed up with “Celebration.” Folk Fest is where a bunch of people get together to play folk music for a week (all over town), that happens in April of every year. Celebration is what you were describing in your video and that happens every two years- natives rowing to the shores and having a grand celebration for a week straight. They usually have southeast groups but try and invite a few groups from around the world to dance as well. It’s going on right now, just look up “Celebration 2022”.

      Yeah, if you’re there in the summer the Mendenhall falls trail will get you pretty close and if you’re there in the winter Mendenhall lake freezes over and you can walk straight across, this is also the best time to visit the ice caves.

    I thought the Mendenhall glacier was not receding but was one of the few glaciers that was expanding?

    • @markpatterson5250
      @markpatterson5250 2 года назад +1

      The Mendenhall glacier has been receding receding for a very long time. In 1793 Capt. George Vancouver "discovered" it when it was pressed up against what we now call Douglas Island. Taku glacier (also fed from the Juneau Ice Field) has been advancing (but now appears to be slowing in it's advance).
