Such an amazing conversation about Juneau and how to maximize your time there. If anyone has any questions or needs some extra inspiration for their Juneau trip, please let us know!
One thing I learned while in Juneau was that most of the stores near the docks were owned by big outside companies that didn’t even hire the locals. So to give your business to locals, look for a sign in a store saying “This store owned by an Alaskan.” I feel that if I am invading someone’s home area, the least I can do is give them my business.
Our tour guide (on a bike ride I did) told us the same thing. I was wondering why Alaska had so many jewelry and watch stores - they said “The cruise lines own them, do your business locally.”
I went in summer 6th grade 1987... the large corporate stores were not available then... at least as far as I can recall... I saw nothing familiar... it was nice
Born and raised here, I didn't know we had the smallest Costco in the world! It's one of our biggest stores in town! Hilarious! Glad you enjoyed your trip here!
Winter in Juneau for me it's probably the most beautiful in the morning fresh snow and the sun light hitting across our land I love it here I'm born in Juneau and raised here all my life
Due to the travel requirement of a contract with the state I traveled to Juneau for basically 2 to 3 weeks every month and stayed at the Barnoff while there. You are pretty spot on in your review of Juneau but you missed so so much. Also from the look of it you spent a large amount of time based out of the downtown area. Juneau is actually the second largest cities in the US in terms of area. If you explore the area around the airport you will find several national chain stores. It is expensive there, and you already mentioned the reason why. Only two ways to get merchandise there, boat or plane. If you are there in the winter you could very likely get to see the northern lights, which is absolutely amazing. There is so much more there. I can not recommend Juneau enough but it is not for everyone. By the way the fireworks are actually on the 4th of July at 12:01 am making their fireworks the first to go off in the country.
We who live in Juneau, not having a road to our town, sometimes lag behind the times and are late to get outside news. I hope that the nice folks who live in Honolulu are enjoying the new bridge they must have built to them.
Springtime is the least rainy/cloudy fyi. Which is good for being able to actually see the landscape. Summer can be extremely rainy, thus blocking the views. Although I personally love the rainy/mist/fog/rainforest vibes. The sunny spring days are what I’d recommend for being able to see all the epic scenery. I live on a boat downtown. Springtime is what I recommend.
I went for the first time visiting a friend, so I got all the fun of Juneau without the downsides of being a regular visitor. We went fishing, shooting, hiking saw tons of bald eagles all without paying extremely high fees for tours since my buddy has lived there all his life.
The July / August light is literally golden---great hiking trail at the top of the tram. Shop at top of tram has local artwork. Take bus to Mendenhall Glacier so you have time to hike trails available. I have visited twice feeling the need to take 11 family members on second cruise to AK. Still want to go back once more!
Great video with a lot of good tips. I'm taking the ferry from Bellingham to Juneau in two weeks and I'm really looking forward to seeing the sights and trying out some of your food recommendations.
Thank you for creating such an informative video! We are airline employees who travel a lot but have never been to Alaska and don’t want to do a cruise. Planning a trip to Juneau after July 4th and can’t wait to see the places you mention. This will be a great way to see everything we want to see. Thanks again!
The fireworks start at midnight exactly when 4th of July starts. They are done over the Gastineau Channel, and the best view used to be from Mt. Robert's before it was developed imo. It is dark at that time and latitude. Further north it's not dark at night for the summer months (=midnight sun), so there are no big organized 4th of July fireworks shows.
I'm from Ireland and I've yet to travel to the states. Alaska's definitely in my top 5 states to visit, I find the landscapes so intriguing. Though, as a young adult with little travel experience it's probably a trip for later down the road lol
Visiting Juneau AK would be great as a young person versus waiting until you’re older. Fly in with a week long hotel and you can get around everywhere via the public bus system easily. Additionally, the tourist employee industry is all young people so you’d have a very easy time getting invited to bars, bonfires, etc. Travel while young - your future isn’t guaranteed
LDR, if you ever make it to Canada you'll find the Yukon and the Northwest Territories to be a beautiful place to visit. In the summer time Dawson City, Yukon has a four day party in mid August known as Discovery Days which celebrates The Klondike Gold Rush Days. Nearby is also the picturesque Kluane National Park (pronounced Clue-annie). Next door is The Northwest Territories and the city of Yellowknife. Lots of great fishing, hunting, hiking etc., and they too have the very picturesque Nahanni National Park. You might want to check out the videos and pics of all of these places. Enjoy!
I have lived in Juneau for 20 plus years. Great job on your video! We have had one of the rainiest summers I remember .We are in a rain forest though. I feel people are friendly to tourists~We are used to them.. If you have not been here, you really should visit us!
OUTSTANDING!! This video was so informative. Thank you!! We are headed up to Alaska this summer. Been 10 years since we cruised up there. Really liked you formula for this video.
Awesome video. Much appreciated too. I am going on a cruise to Alaska on Aug 26 & Juneau is one of the ports that I will be going to. I am someone who loves to take landscape pics (I am not a photogrpher). Looks like I won't have any problem there. Will also be visiting Sitka, Skagway, Ketchican & Tracy Arm Fjiord. Looking forward to it. Thanks for that great video.. Don
I’ll be in Juneau in June. I am soooo pumped. Things I hope to do in 13 hours, Mount Roberts Tram, Mendenhall Glaciers, a whale watching tour, and Tracy’s King Crab Shack. I know I’m packing but it is all on my bucket list.
My wife and I live in a small town in Florida between Orlando and Daytona. I was born and raised in Miami Florida and hate the sweltering hot weather. We visited Alaska in ‘23 …we loved Alaska so much that we plan to move there hopefully by the end of ‘24 We rented a car and traveled to many places during the winter so most places were closed. I am watching many different videos to see what place we would like to move to and Juneau is on the list, so thank you for this informative video. 😊❤
Just as a correction you cannot "see the entire Alaska Marine Highway System" from the top of the Mt. Roberts Tramway. The AMHS spans from Ketchican up to Skagway. From the top of the tramway all you can see is a small section of the Gasteneau Channe.
I live in Juneau AK and I want to correct you on some things! 1. The weather its the most unpredictable thing in Juneau and the weather forecast is almost never right just fwi. 2. I have lived here my entire life and I have never seen really large vegetables or competitions but I may be wrong. 3. Last you missed the entirety of the other side of town! You missed a lot of amazing views and the waterfall trail that you can see the mendenhall glacier from.
Thanks so much! I def need to visit the other side of the city next time, it looks so beautiful. Our guide said the locals hang out there and go to the beaches.
Hi too am a Juneauite & take issue with a couple of things. The giant vegetables, those are from Matanuska valley, not southeast Alaska & the book MISERABLE PARADISE is about Ketchikan, not Juneau.
I was born in Juneau. I love going back to visit. The air has something special to it. I grew up in Wyoming...the 2 least populated states. Juneau fireworks are LOUD! Go to Mendenhall Golf! My family owns it. I've always thought that I'll end up back there.
I agree. My biggest regret was not paying extra to have a window seat for the landing. Yeah, it definitely didn't have a capital city vibe at all. Even as tourists, we would run into the same people who would say, "Hello" to us. Architecture, I agree. But if you're doing a longer trip, I'd recommend pairing it with another city, as the entire region can be toured in 3 to 4 days. I also recommend coming later in the summer, if you want to see the flowers. I will say though, the town does have a tweaker and homeless problem, and is a bit sketchy after dark.
They moved the homeless shelter and food bank from downtown to lemon creek. so it is not as bad now "downtown" but still an out of sight out of mind solution to cater to the princess cruise overlords. we have about 500 homeless here. the 30k population number is not a real number. more like a little over 20k, and we have many outlying areas that are not on road system they count. a bunch of these people are legislature and aids that reside in other places like anchorage and claim to live here for "reasons" .. Governor is usually the biggest culprit LOL...
I did a 10 day long trip in Switzerland just 2 months ago (which was so beyond amazing) and I was wondering if I will still be amazed by the sights and scenery of my upcoming Alaska cruise. Your video helped me get excited again for Alaska, hopefully my excursions and the history will make it an unforgettable incomparable experience! Thanks for sharing
So glad it was helpful! The Alaska scenery really looks like a National Park all around. It definitely rivals Switzerland / Scandinavian countries, although the new world feel and wildlife makes distinctive.
Yes we all know each other here. There was only 1 highschool ( Juneau Douglas High School ) around 2009 they built a second High school (Thunder Mountain High School ). Downside to this, everyone gossip and the moment you do something the entire town will know about it in a matter of minutes.
There’s an excursion right in the juneau harbor that takes you on a ferry to a glacier and fjord. More here: ruclips.net/video/dQzvimtXNwQ/видео.htmlsi=ONq982eWvkOkPM-J
I recommend people to visit cope park, it's downtown. It extremely beautiful. The water is crystal clear. And you can hike to the last chance mine. I live here in Juneau and this is in my opinion one of the best places to visit in Juneau
Greetings from the garden island Kauai 🏝 Thank you beautiful video .Alaska extremely beautiful. I like it very much. My favorite Juneau and Sitka .The best .
Count on rain it rains about 250 days a year "it's a rainforest". umbrellas are taboo! You cannot see fireworks if you are on a cruise ship. they have to leave before 11pm. most of the time we get to see pretty colors in the clouds anyway. Seasonal workers,, they end up staying a lot of time because they can't afford to leave. We got beer, support your local brewery. yes, Tracy arm is a must do. a lil spendy. On a budget, mendenhal glacier is a city bus ride and a short walk... good place to go if you need a handicap accessible trail to see a glacier up close. Juneau is the Alaskan Triangle, Stay on The Trail. more people go poof here than everywhere else in the world combined.. seriously. Travel here for seasonal work? Get a Round TRIP Ticket... Don't play games with yourself. 1 bedroom apt, if you can find one. $1400 They are not the greatest paying jobs, but you can get mass overtime. most people here work for Govt, construction, mining, fishing.....
True. Everyone is stocked up on sturdy rain gear, no one uses umbrellas. You spend so much time in the rain, carrying an umbrella around is just a nuisance. Been to Juneau many times, and people are very down to earth, in general with less of a mean edge. I couldn't deal with the winters, though.
I was in Juneau one week ago today! I wish I had seen this video before I landed there. We had a 9-hour layover that would have afforded enough time for some of these sights....maybe. However, it was a very gloomy, overcast, and rainy day (and our first actual NIGHT having just spent two weeks in the Nome area!).
Not sure if i will visit USA at all, BUT if i do Juneau is defenitly on the list of the places to visit, similiar to here in Sweden is full of nature and peacefull rivers.lakes and forest, outdoor is a nr one activity here speciall in the north where we have Sarek and Abisko nationalparks, hopefully i will visit Alaska after my Iceland trip. Greetings from Sweden🤩🙏
Im going to Ketchikan and juneau next week, I’m a bit worried because of the flights but also because I don’t know how welcoming they’re towards foreigners, does it feel safe? Are they welcoming to other cultures?
Rental cars aren't necessary since most sights are walkable form the downtown including Mt Roberts Tram, perseverance trail, the restaurants, and ferries to join the glacier cruises, etc.
LOL, visiting this town (not a city) would be nice for a few days, but there is a reason why it is only a one day stop on the cruise ships. The real action in Alaska is in the main, northern part of the state, and even within southeast Alaska, Ketchikan will be a more interesting town.
Acting like she is wrong for calling it a city is just such a snoody thing, especially when a city literally means “a large town”. Anyways, I love it here. So unless you live here too, you’re talking out of your ass
I just got back from flying into juneau. I got hotel but honestly I shouldnt have. You can camp damn near anywhere you want for free and the only time I spent in it was when the sun went down at like 11, and 7am when my friend woke me up to go do well everything. Also the Rookery and Peleni have some of the best food
I visited SE Alaska 15 times, started with a cruise and following as solo independent traveler. A couple things omitted in video is strong native presence and a new museum and several art galleries and locally owned stores with Alaska artifacts. If you are lucky, you can attend biannual Native Celebrations. Natural beauty of Juneau and the whole SE is unparalleled to anything I ever saw. I was lucky not to have many rainy days, in all my visits.
Just a couple clarifications from a Juneau local 1) the cruise ships do not maintain the trails- there a couple of groups who mostly use volunteers ( but in summer have youth they hire ) that maintain them … they get money from donations. Local city/ borough , grants, taxes - etc .. there are sculptures on the boardwalks by the cruise ship terminals and a whale sculpture downtown that the cruise ships gave $ for but that’s about all I can point to that they fund directly 2) from the Mt Roberts tram you can see channels of the ocean ( like directly below is the Gastineau channel) and the island of Douglas … the alaska marine highway is on the other side of Douglas and goes mostly up the Lynn canal ( which you can’t see from downtown ) … the alaska marine highway uses ferries ⛴️ to get cars and people to different islands, peninsulas and cities around southeast Alaska- it’s pretty cool and fun way to travel but it - like everything else in Alaska- isn’t cheep 3)There are car rentals but like hotels and good they are costly. There are a few über and lyft but not many and not as reliable. There are taxis , tourist buses / vans and a robust city bus that can get you a lot of places 4) pet peeve but Hawaii’s capital is also only accessible by boat or plane. Every few years they keep trying to move the capital to Anchorage because of concerns ( but they give discounts to people during legislative season so they can come down here ) and legislators get lots of $ for travel, housing It would be so costly to move it Thanks for the awesome video of our lovely chunk of paradise! Also always have rain protection if you visit - it is a temperate rainforest ( Juneau is in one of the worlds largest temperate rainforests - the Tongass) so you never know when the weather will change and catch ya off guard
By what I saw was you didn’t get out of the downtown except for a boat ride to a glacier. If that is so you missed things like the Mendenhall glacier, the mountainside gardens, one of the oldest churches in Alaska with the 12 stations culminating with a statue of Jesus on the cross with the setting sun glistening over the Gastineau channel, the world class theatre on the island, or the art of the native craftsman. The, one of a kind library at the University of Alaska Southeast. You do an injustice to Juneau and all it has to offer a visitor.
Been driving cab in Juneau for roughly 20 years. I have a much different perspective on the people, the government, and the cruise industry. We are expecting 1.8 million passengers this year (2024) and it's gross. On my tour we will talk about the sewers, the bridge, the derelict cars that show up randomly, the homeless shelters, and how water works in and around the dump. The city is now asking me to charge you $3.50 per passenger if you want to take a picture at a public park. Since I am not the Sheriff Of Nottingham trying to fleece the traveler for the millionaire overlords of Poop Lake this year is going to be funnier than ever. Bring your cameras.

@@chris8721-z8y I didn't try. I succeeded 👍
Juneau Costco is not just the smallest Costco store but is the most profitable store by square footage withing all the stores Costco has.
You are an excellent speaker. Calm delivery, but sincere, and articulated good. You made things sound good without shouting or getting overly excited.
I like reviewing peoples speeches as well they’re tone how they come across I think it’s very important. I think I would like this as a job maybe
"Articulated good". Irony

We have a bunch of Hawaii vids on the channel! Sadly Ni‘ihau isn’t open to the public and Molokai is extremely hard to get to.
Should’ve watched this before I was born here , wasn’t prepared
Juneau is the Alaskan Triangle, Stay on The Trail. more people go poof here
than everywhere else in the world combined.. seriously.
Travel here for seasonal work?
Get a Round TRIP Ticket... Don't play games with yourself.
1 bedroom apt, if you can find one. $1400
They are not the greatest paying jobs, but you can get mass overtime.
most people here work for Govt, construction, mining, fishing.....
Very helpful thanks, my daughter just got hired to work over there for the summer 👍
You can also get there via birth canal.
😆😆
I'm sold! Andiamo!
So beautiful
I'm sitting here in NY in mid September hot af, looking for someplace that is cool all year and Google sent me here
Look over here!
how secluded is it in alaska nature? i wanna get way from people and have spots all to myself for the day? Can i find a lot of that there
Yes - lots of secluded spots and trails.
very nice video dear friend 🌹👍
What is that waterfall that you were sitting at? How did you get to it?
It was along the gold creek flume trail
I was in Juneau one week ago today! I wish I had seen this video before I landed there. We had a 9-hour layover that would have afforded enough time for some of these sights....maybe. However, it was a very gloomy, overcast, and rainy day (and our first actual NIGHT having just spent two weeks in the Nome area!).
Should you carry bear spray when on a hike in Juneau???
Yes! Most definitely they are everywhere esp spring summer
Greetings from Sweden🤩🙏
the bird sound is a hawk, not an eagle call
Im going to Ketchikan and juneau next week, I’m a bit worried because of the flights but also because I don’t know how welcoming they’re towards foreigners, does it feel safe? Are they welcoming to other cultures?
Oh awesome! You’ll love it. Ketchikan is a cute little city on the water and very walkable! Both Ketchikan and juneau are friendly to tourists.
@@RunTheAtlas Thanks! I’m flying all the way from Mexico so I’m pretty excited to visit
I booked a cruise last minute and most of the excursions were sold out. I rented a car for the day, is that not necessary? tiA
How bad are the mosquitoes?
We didn’t have any issues with bugs here during our trip (July). I was wearing long sleeves most of the time.
I'll stay in Canada!
Pelmeni is great!
Juneau my hometown
How can you talk about Juneau without talking about the almost constant rain? :) I lived there for 18 years and never got a sun tan.
Believe it or not it didn’t rain at all during our trip in July!
Thinking about taking a cruise to Alaska in 2025.
Cool 😎 🦅🙏🏼
Just a couple clarifications from a Juneau local
1) the cruise ships do not maintain the trails- there a couple of groups who mostly use volunteers ( but in summer have youth they hire ) that maintain them … they get money from donations. Local city/ borough , grants, taxes - etc .. there are sculptures on the boardwalks by the cruise ship terminals and a whale sculpture downtown that the cruise ships gave $ for but that’s about all I can point to that they fund directly
2) from the Mt Roberts tram you can see channels of the ocean ( like directly below is the Gastineau channel) and the island of Douglas … the alaska marine highway is on the other side of Douglas and goes mostly up the Lynn canal ( which you can’t see from downtown ) … the alaska marine highway uses ferries ⛴️ to get cars and people to different islands, peninsulas and cities around southeast Alaska- it’s pretty cool and fun way to travel but it - like everything else in Alaska- isn’t cheep
3)There are car rentals but like hotels and good they are costly. There are a few über and lyft but not many and not as reliable. There are taxis , tourist buses / vans and a robust city bus that can get you a lot of places
4) pet peeve but Hawaii’s capital is also only accessible by boat or plane. Every few years they keep trying to move the capital to Anchorage because of concerns ( but they give discounts to people during legislative season so they can come down here ) and legislators get lots of $ for travel, housing
It would be so costly to move it
Thanks for the awesome video of our lovely chunk of paradise!
Also always have rain protection if you visit - it is a temperate rainforest ( Juneau is in one of the worlds largest temperate rainforests - the Tongass) so you never know when the weather will change and catch ya off guard
True statement about Hawaii!! Thanks for adding
Such a nice vlogs >>>im from Iraq
I'll be visiting in May 2025.
Just remember, the bears aren't nice. 😉
Ain’t that the truth!
Russians don't agree with you
By what I saw was you didn’t get out of the downtown except for a boat ride to a glacier.
We only had a long weekend there unfortunately. Hopefully we will be back!
They charge for taking a picture? Wow wonder how they even know you’re stopping for a picture?
No mention of whales?
Good point! We will have to do a follow up ❤️ 🐋
Love when people use falcon calls when talking about Bald Eagles 😂 That's not what they sound like
There were no bald eagle sounds available lol
I lived in juneau almost 40 years ago..tourism has RUINED ALASKA!!!
It’s kind of a double edged sword because it brought prosperity and jobs too
After watching this video, Putin wants Alaska back.
Hello Very beauty Alaska, here Brazil My contact bye
I wonder why Russia gave it toUSA
India 🇮🇳🇮🇳
Lol. Bald eagles don't make that sound
Duh
