In 2022 I shared time with Master Carver Nathan Jackson in Saxman Village and I believe it was life changing for me and my artistic journey. Master Jackson encouraged my mixed media photography and gave me invaluable tips on color and composition. He is one of a kind and incredibly nice as well. Thank you for showing Ketchikan in such a favorable light...it is perhaps my favorite place to stay in all of Alaska.

thankyounfor your tour of ketichan ..I'm 69 and cannot do your hike, but it was wonderdful seeing your travels , I really want to do the tour to the monuments..Im going on a cruise in September, and will pre book this, as it is so educational about the origins, I am from Australia, and cant go past the similarities to the Maori culture in New Zealand .. astoundiunding, as well as the culture in Hawaii...amazing...
This just gets better....... Having grown up on Canada's west coast in Victoria B.C., as a kid, I spent summers on my parents boat, traveling the west coast, including to Alaska. Love this video! We will coming to Ketchikan in September on a cruise and this video is soooo helpful! We won't have too much time so I'm trying to pick and choose what to do. We were thinking of attending the Lumberjack Show. I know it's a little touristy but it looks fun. We would love to hear your insights on this. Thanks!
Hey Peg! Oh you are going to have so much fun!! I'm happy the video was helpful :) We didn't do the Lumberjack Show ourselves, but we could hear the crowd every time it was playing. It certainly sounded like folks were having a good time and enjoying the show! I wonder if there are some youtube videos out there that show what it's like?
Very nicely done video! A few points: I lived in coastal Alaska for 33 years, where I was a habitat biologist. I worked out of Ketchikan in the 1990s when it was a VERY different town. I expect you know that the rainbird trail goes through an old clearcut. You have to get well out of town to see true old-growth forest. Visitors can get to these areas if they wish. Note that Hyder, AK is also accessible by road, though it has limited tourist infrastructure. Finally, I am surprised that you didn't go to Soho Coho, the shop of probably Alaska's best-known artist, Ray Troll. If you return, it is a must-see! I am subscribing...
Thanks for subscribing! Yes, unfortunately there was still so much we couldn't do in Ketchikan, with our crazy short visit time. We got a taste of what Alaska visits are like for more tourists - much too short!
We were so bummed to miss seeing y'all in Ketchikan by just one day! We were blessed to have amazing weather though, and with a rented car, we drove from the northernmost to the southernmost ends of the pavement around town! There are so many incredible vistas and places to see, and you went to lots of great ones!
Enjoying this Ketchikan video. We visited last year at the end of our cruise. I really like the Totem Heritage Center and walking on the boardwalk. We didn't do the Rainbird Trail but instead rented a car for day to hike the trails north of Ward Cove. You should've busted Hump Island Oyster Farm while there. Yum.
Ooh that must have been fun to hit up the trails by Ward Cove! Yes, it was difficult to narrow down our activities while there - so much to do, so little time!

Sadly cruise passengers really don't have enough time to enjoy the tow. Spending a few days, like you did, is a better way to go. Did you stop in to the Bawden Street Brewery across from where you stayed? The staff is very friendly and can give you some good tips on what to see, where to eat, etc. I used to live in Ketchikan and sorely miss it!!!
Agreed! A couple hours in town really doesn't cut it. We saw that brewery and wanted to stop in, but we were so swamped with our filming schedule + post production on past episodes, we just couldn't swing it :(
Oh it was packed for us too! Sometimes when it was raining, there were a lot fewer folks on the streets. And we were surprised we didn’t see more folks on Rainbird, but I guess if you only have a few hours in port…not a lot of folks choose a hike! 😢
2:09 we have around 12,000 there's areas like Saxman and the borough which are technically out of city limits but are the same community and pretty much same place a few more people live here if you count Pennec and Gravina which I would. 8:00 is 65 degrees considered cold in lower 48? also no local uses umbrellas you'll stick out and look gay "oh no the rain". 8:56 Tsimshian lived in Canada till the residents of Metlakatla originally in BC asked the US government for land so they could move out and they moved the entire village that's around how the story goes and the Haida had a tiny sliver of land the vast majority was Tlinget
You know, people spend thousands of dollars to come to your town, two weeks of full time work to produce a video that has nothing but beautiful things to say, a video that will (we hope) help support the tourism industry in your town…and all you have to share are criticisms? The 2020 census puts Ketchikan’s population at 8,168. Everyone understands the difference between city limits and population data and surroundings areas. Yes, 65 and rainy is cold to some people. Umbrellas are handy in the rain. And every gosh darn educational plaque in the Southeast lumps the Tsimshian, Haida, and Tlingit together when the focus of the content is to give broad brushstrokes, rather than a deeper dive into the history of each group. Maybe before jumping so quickly into criticism and then vocalizing it, you can think for a second about the people behind the work that you are judging. We aren’t some rich RUclipsrs just swinging our way around trying to make a buck off of communities that aren’t ours. We have made $100 off this video, and we barely scrape by every month from this channel. We are busting our butts trying to build a channel that takes people to places and helps them appreciate the beauty of places across the Americas. We chose Ketchikan to visit, and spent WEEKS researching, learning, planning, filming, editing. I don’t know, if someone chose my hometown and came and produced a video like this for it…I’d be flattered. Cora out.
