The first series was done by Japanese and often was in Japanese without subtitles. Stop pretending that you are doing anything but standing on the shoulders of giants
So many Japanese had been fed up with Japan-related films portrayed by Hollywood in which main Japanese roles were played by English speaking Chinese or Korean actors and actresses for a long time. They don't know Japanese culture, language and even the way Japanese carry themselves. So not only most of those films had seemed like awkward parodies to Japanese people, but also Japanese had felt annoyed to see those "fake Japan" spreading around the world. Shogun is one of my favorite books. The first Shogun series is also a favorite. I've been watching mainly Japanese TV/movies now for almost 20 years being married to a Japanese woman. I really got into all the Taiga dramas and have learned a lot about Japan's history. I'm really looking forward to this adaptation of Shogun and will watch it with a critical eye. Ms Akiko Kobayahsi said a truth that today's people and the people back then had different bodies, language, etc. I'm happy she recognizes that and gets this into the production.

As someone of Japanese descent, I am truly inspired and motivated by this incredible series, with aspirations for it to achieve an Emmy or Oscar award.
They are not. They made Mariko a bigger character than Blackthorn and they have her literally fighting people. Could be good but authentic to the book it is not.
@@gghelis fair enough :) perhaps the trailer is only showing the end. They are making her out to be a more constant warrior literally rather than mentally or emotionally. This will be a huge detour and it seems is meant to sideline Blackthorne into a more timid character. This is a classic Disney stamp. Btw I hope these trailers are dishonest and that I am completely wrong on everything. 🙏🏽
@nthegaslight Did you read the book? I mean, I didn't count the scenes they appear in, but she's comparable to Blackthorne in amount of "screen time" and influence on the plot, both of them being behind Toranaga who's the main driving force of the story. Their relationship is much less prominent, compared to the old show. That fighting scene doesn't end up like she's Rey from Star Wars, far from it. Edit: got a little too spoilery there, fixed.
Loving this series! I remember watching the mini series as a kid and was jazzed to learn of the reboot. Hope to live long enough for the third version in another 40 years when it’s delivered not just visually but in a way we can’t yet comprehend as consumers of entertainment.
I'm so happy for the Japanese actors and producers behind this show and the country as a whole. I've always loved Japanese history and culture. It's always been a dream of mine to live in Japan for a few years and get the chance to experience the people and culture firsthand. For them to be able to show the world their history in such an amazing way like the lady said they would never be able to do because they would never have such a large-budget production so it is really great that the producers and FX are doing the right thing and doing everything they can including casting and working so hard to make sure their being authentic to the place, time, and culture.
Follow your dream. As an American, I lived in Vancouver BC for more than 5 years, and am now in Japan for about 3 and 1/2 years. Outside of Southern California, both locations have always held my utmost fascination.
Thank you for making this as authentic as possible and using Asian crew, advisors, actors and actresses. This has been a major issue with many western productions, not just in recent years, but for decades.
Major issue? Like what and when for example. As far as I'm concerned, japan and its history have always been heavily romanticised in American productions.

I am Japanese woman and actually I don’t have the image of Japanese women from this era acting and talking like that way, especially toward men. Mariko’s personality here is too articulate and closer to Western ideal, an another typical Disney princess to me. Mariko from 1980 Shogun is much more real for this era of Japan. Traditional Japanese women up to until around mid 20th century especially in upper class were typically raised to be encouraged to look and sound soft, and elusive when expressing their feelings or opinions (they rarely say it first of all) , walking behind men, not ahead of. This is only my image and I never means to put down the actress. She is excellent😊
I like their trying to be authentic. I also want them to emphasize the correct pronunciation for the important word "Shogun." A lot of people pronounce the second syllable like "gun," which is incorrect.

Now to make a show about Ghost of Tsushima!
Nah, they really went all in on this show. It really looks epic. Can’t wait to see it.
Everything looks incredible
These behind the scenes/production videos are amazing. Thank you.
The last time I saw this level of effort for authenticity and attention to detail was the LOTR behind-the-scenes documentaries for the director's cuts.
Everything looks really stunning . This show is going to win Emmy awards , because everything looks really good ⚔️⚔️⚔️⚔️ .
Shogun will be amazing well done for all the people involved looks very authentic
Grew up on the original and the book. Now seeing them remake it and appears to be doing it justice so I can't wait to see the full thing.
I could tell your attention to authenticity just from the first trailer alone. Thank you so much for for your efforts and integrity in telling this story.
❤🇯🇵Finally a show that gives me goosebumps of anticipation for each upcoming episode. This masterpiece is highly impressive and I salute the dedication of all the team members. I have recently begun learning Japanese and Shogun inspires me to keep on at this challenge. The music of each episode opening is beyond mesmerizing🇯🇵❤
God, I hope this gets a blu-ray release as well. It looks *gorgeous*. 🙏
It probably will do eventually, the book and original series, were my father's favourite. I recorded the original on VHS for him when he was working night shift. The series eventually came out on DVD which I bought for him as a gift. In spite of the many times he'd already watched the tape he sat and watched the DVD's several times.
The DVD is now part of my own collection, I look forward to buying this new version on blu-ray eventually.
I'm sure he'd be excited to see it again anew.

I first read the book 50 years ago. Thank you for this production, you honor the original material. Just wish you'd release the entire season instead of having to wait so long between the episodes...
Without revealing my age, I read this and the James Clavell collection when I was 22, 28 years ago and I thoroughly enjoyed it. I really encourage young readers to give it a try. Think of it like reading Andrzej Sapkowski's Witcher series but grounded in reality. THAT said, I so look forward to watching this that I bought the whole book series again to reread and relive the thrill of the books. For that alone FX, you have my gratitude...best of luck and success with this series!
Yes. Book is still top. Epic story, full of knowledge, action packed, with a little bit of romance, humor and, even, gore scenes. Definitely worth of reading nowadays. We can compare it with Game of Thrones or Witcher, sure. Btw it is a shame that witcher wasnt made in this way 😢
Lol it's way better than the Witcher, it's so well paced and realised. One of the very best novels I've ever read
Watched the first 2 episodes. My grandfather fought in the Philippines (11th Airbourne), I'm a vet myself (Korea, 8th Army 1993), degree in Japanese (2001), lived in Saitama (2002), just a back info to say...yes.. wow...from each perspective, the 'native' and the 'foreigner' , my grandfather, J.C., and myself....you (FX) did yourselves proud...well done gang!
And oh boy this series is amazing. We haven't seen something well done like this in years.
Absolutely loved this show. The incredible level of care, commitment and attention to detail described here by the producers and advisors are visible in every shot.
CAN'T WAIT!!!!!! Loved these videos, the passion of the cast and crew is evident.
And they won tons of Emmys! Well deserved
The more I see of this prior to release the more impressive it's looking!
I saw Ran a long time ago, for me that movie was the standard of Japanese period film making. I can hope that this series come reasonably close to that film.
Finally one historical Drama with accuracy and authenticity much missed over the past years. Can't wait for it.
well i would say it IS slightly romanticized. but the last kingdom, knightfall, vikings and valhalla, alienist, these are just a few examples
@@lyrilljacksonall of then are romanticized to a degree but it allows viewers to be drawn in and then, perhaps, take a genuine interest in the period. I have no problem with creative licence if it honours the spirit of history
@@lyrilljackson The main concern is: Will it be woke? i hope to god it wont.
@@BestOpinionHaver .......
Because it uses the same costumes and sets on NHK taiga dramas (literally Japanese PBS, educational channel), unlike previous Japan-themed shows by Hollywood that were too close to Fantasy and Nonsense..
A RESOUNDING CONGRATULATIONS !!! I'm glued to the series waiting for the succeeding episodes 👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏
Shogun is amazing so far! I love this new emphasis in Hollywood for authenticity and representation!
I am currently studying a bachlors of Fine Arts (photomedia) when I watched shogun it was truly inspiring to see the dedication and spirit behind such a filmology, you could see the impression of dedication to prefect the authenticity in every little movement and detail. I can't wait to see how this series evolves.
thankyou mr hiroyuki sanada.japanese history seemed so cool.and gread uped for your skil of tell the world. yoroyuki sanada is so cool person for our japanese.
I can't wait for this, anything Hiroyuki Sanada is in I'm there. Already hoping they put it all together in a 4k disc release.
I can't wait to lie to my family that I am taking a business trip, when in actuality I'm going to lock myself in the hotel room and binge this
Shogun is one of my favorite books.
Which 大河 is your favorite?
I can't wait for this series! The original Shogun series was amazing back in the days and this looks absolutely fantastic in every aspect!
Looks very good and I admire their commitment to authenticity. I long for the day European countries can again aim for depicting our own history with such authenticity and patriotism, instead of the "inclusive" and "diverse" trash we get these days.
Just fantastic, I love this series and would recommend it over and over! The actors, the scenarios, filming etc etc... everything is just great!
The 1980 version had great attention to detail with Japanese culture, I'm glad this one is keeping the bar high on this! Great job!
it's looking good so far, much better than Netflix's Age of Samurai.
This is perhaps, going to be the most epic show of this year.
So much love and dedication going into this show
Beautifully done! I love detailed authenticity from any story especially if it's learning more about culture. I hope, Shogun will win many awards! They deserved it 😤👏✨ Also! Sanada-san deserved to be recognised by the whole world now. He's a living legend! 😎💖
As someone of Japanese descent, I am truly inspired and motivated by this incredible series, with aspirations for it to achieve an Emmy or Oscar award.
Shogun is my favorite book. I hope they keep it authentic to the book.
They are not. They made Mariko a bigger character than Blackthorn and they have her literally fighting people. Could be good but authentic to the book it is not.
@@ghostinthegaslight I had a feeling. Thanks.
@@ghostinthegaslight She is fighting people in the book, there's a huge scene with her fighting near the end.
The more Making of's I watch, the more I'm excited for this!! It's going to be a masterpiece, I'm sure
@@mattsoca1 I love Vancouver also, I was up there a few years ago and loved it.
Very happy for the series to be brought (back) to life in this way, hope it does very well!
@@Piorun.98 lmfao typical internete conversation
@@Piorun.98 Several times. Just a few examples I can think of where people of non-Asian heritage played characters of Asian heritage:
- Yul Brynner in The King and I (1956) cast as a Thai.
- David Carradine, Kung Fu (1972)
- Scarlett Johanssen, Ghost in the Shell (2017)
- Noah Ringer, Last Airbender (2010)
- Hugo Weaving, Cloud Atlas (2012)
- Tilda Swinton, Dr Strange (2016) (was also supposed to be male).
So, lots and lots of times Jake.
@chillikoala lmao ghost in the shell. Scarlet literally looks like the real life version character. (In fact most anime characters look European or have eauropean features 😂) also picking a film from the 1950's like how many Thai actors could have been used back then please make me a list. Also 6 examples over the last 80 years is lots and lots haha I bet you haven't even seen half those films
@@Piorun.98 You can debate your version of "authenticity" all you like, but all you're doing is demonstrating my original point, and my original point still stands. Learn comprehension, know your facts, and be respectful.
This show is incredible!
Authenticity in Historical Dramas! This is what we want.
one of the best shows ive seen in years! and what makes it so is the authenticity and meticulous attention to detail. hiro is clearly at the center of this .. after westworlds shogun season i was wondering why doesn’t he have his own show!
This show is amazing!!
this

GOOD
I love old Shogun (video), which is amazing! I can't wait and watch new Shogun.. 😍 ❤ I released how old Japanese must be very strict manners and rules!! No way! 😮😮
already a masterpiece! thank you FX Networks for this work
The attention to detail on display in this show is insane. They did their homework.
I cannot wait to see the results. Looks phenomenal.
Love the attention to details but for me, the language being spoken is just chef's kiss really.
I saw the origional mini series a long time ago and I loved it. I hope this one is as good or better have a good evening.
I’m thankful for evolution in the arts so it can maybe influence everyday life. It still boggles my mind that unity is considered a “theme” in movies but the reality of our lives is division. One day we will all live like production of this show, working together to make a movie about our history of past divisions
I appreciate the incredible detail in each scene, from the makie lacquerware "props" to the gestures of peasant and noble were well thought out. I withhold final assessment until I view the full production on FX!
Incredible
This story is truly a spectacle.
I watched the 1980 edition starring Richard Chamberlain.
Then I read James Clavell's book.
The Japanese have a lot of culture to teach us.
My most sincere congratulations to the entire team who are helping us learn more about this extraordinary nation.
As a Japanese who was bought both in Japan and America, it's so cool to see such high standards to replicate the culture as much as possible!
looks promising. much much better than Netflix's Age of Samurai. can't wait to watch this!
Omg I’m glad to see these snippets but at this point it’s a tease. I’m having a hard time waiting for this show to come out in a few weeks 😊
I like their trying to be authentic. I also want them to emphasize the correct pronunciation for the important word "Shogun." A lot of people pronounce the second syllable like "gun," which is incorrect.
This production is doing everything right. Really leaning into honoring the source material and the details of the time period.
所作は心を映し心を隠す
I freaking love this series barely finished watching it :)
