      The names of the players in Clavell's novel, the original miniseries and this series, have been altered from those of their real historical counterparts. Production values and cast are A+ and I can't wait to see this... Fun fact-- "Shogun" makes for a trifecta of shows (Apple TV's "Pachinko" and "Monarch: Legacy Of Monsters" are the other two), featuring Anna Sawai and all three, were made (in part) in and around Vancouver.

      Funny thing is... its generally accurate. This is basically at the end of the Sengoku period. Oda Nobunaga was dead, and his successor Toyotomi Hideyoshi (the Taiko in the video) was also dead, leaving the Toyotomi clan in the hands of a 7 years old. A council regent is set up to rule Japan instead. One of the regent is a daimyo called Tokugawa Ieyasu (in this video Toranaga). They use almost the same name and pretty much the same clan flag.

    The "Sengoku Period" (the era of civil wars) that Japanese learn about in school classes was the period before Toyotomi Hideyoshi, aka "Taikoh" in this video, once ruled Japan. And this "Sengoku Period" was filled with countless treacheries, plots, numerous warlords and fierce battles. Thinking back on how I felt when I was taking the class, it was as if I were watching "Game of Thrones" right now.
    When I was watching "Game of Thrones," I thought it would be great if there was a show that portrayed Sengoku Period in Japan with this quality, but I never thought it would actually become a reality!

      Pretty much every monarchy ever has had some really interesting ones at different times, both succession wars and a warring states period.

      Game of Thrones itself is based upon/inspired by the 'Wars of the Roses' period of civil war in medieval England. This period in mid to late 1400s England led to the establishment of the Tudor dynasty and the famous King Henry VIII and Queen Elizabeth I.

    • @threenumbnuts
      @threenumbnuts Месяц назад +1

      @@julian-p True, but OTOH the change of names helps make it clear that this is fictionalized. No big-budget TV show will show history completely accurately- especially since they inevitably have to 'fill in the blanks', or choose which account to follow when historians do not have a consensus on a particular incident- but people tend to vastly overrate their accuracy. This way, it constantly reminds the audience that this is not the real story, just inspired / based on it.

    Shogun is one of the great contemporary classics. Beautiful and brutal in equal measure. I have read it once a year since my early teens.
    It also introduced me to Musashi, whose story follows after the events of the war for the Shogunate.
    Im beyond excited for this. I hope it was made with love.

      Most people aren't familiar with the diacritical marks that are added onto letters to indicate changes in pronunciation, stress, tone, or other aspects of speech. So they just pronounce the word exactly how it's written.
      The pronunciation of Shōgun in English borrows from the Japanese "将軍". The diacritic over the "o" (the macron, ō) is supposed to indicate a long vowel sound.

    This artfully crafted and beautifully rendered historical primer gives me a lot of hope for the quality of the show. If FX puts this much work into creating such a visually stunning presentation, just to educate people as to the historical context of the show, then it is a clear indicator that the show is probably going to be top notch in terms of its production value.

    日本において、将軍SHŌGUNという官職は天皇に任命されます。
    また、武家政権である鎌倉時代(12世紀末)以降、将軍SHŌGUNは天皇の子孫であることが条件でした。
    天皇の血筋ではない豊臣秀吉は将軍SHŌGUNにはなれなかったため、関白・太閤となり日本を統治しました。

    @althesmith 3 месяца назад +6

    I do like that one of the trailers shows the Anjin training artillery gunners. This, rather than musket training, is probably how the historical "Blackthorne"- Will Adams- assisted the soon-to-be Shogun at Sekigahara assuming he was there. The Japanese had used muskets for several decades, manufactured their own and their tactics were well up to par with the Europeans by 1600.

    • @Imhotep-Still-Juicy
      @Imhotep-Still-Juicy 3 месяца назад +1

      If I remember correctly, William Adams was indeed conducting naval bombardment on a different area during the battle of Sekigahara. So his expertise was utilised by Tokugawa during this crucial moment in Japan’s History. The book on the real Man is as impressive as the fictional telling of him.

    I currently live in the region once called Bungo now Oita and live as a protestant missionary. I am a bit of a history nerd. The history of this region is fascinating. The ruler the character is based on is Otomo Sorin. The locals still revere him to this day. A few of my neighbors are his descendants (Otomo). I am also curious but not 100% sure a descendant of Williams Adam’s (Samurai Williams) who the character Blackthorn is based on. My family is descended from the Adam’s family😂. But can only track down our ancestors back to just before 1600. He was born in 1564. He also ironically crashed landed off the coast of Bungo.
    Haven’t read the book but very curious about it. Even if it’s a fictional telling.
