  • Hi! Virtual Bro here to recommend one of my favorite VR games that I think deserves more attention.
Zenith: The Last City is one of the BEST multiplayer VR games on the Quest 2. It combines the social aspects of VR Chat with some really solid action RPG gameplay and a variety of side activities to do as well, such as cooking, creature catching, and...Connect Four?

Yeah I gotta say, Zenith is a cool concept but its so spread out between its various systems that all of them individually have the same issue that most VR games have in the sense that you will get bored because its very basic. They really should have focused on making like 6 unique classes that all feel very different and interesting, THEN gone ham on all the side content.

Zenith was okay, but it really is a hollow shell of what a VRMMORPG could be with the right talent and an appropriate amount of resources. The dev team behind the game is scrappy to say the least, and that just doesn't cut it in this genre. I'm getting similar vibes from Ilysia.

I have to agree, what really held the game back for me on launch was how rushed it was, I played the entirety of the game at launch and it felt so rushed and the graphics were subpar. They tried so hard to get it on the quest that the game looked horrible on PC. Then there were loads of bugs and the story was heavily incomplete. This game shouldn't have been released yet. I think if they'd have maybe done a large scale open beta rather than a full release the community would've been better off. I really hoped this game would be one of those games that you can sink 1400 hours in easily but it's not. I played both classes all the way through at launch and I only managed 55 hours before I'd seen everything and the game had nothing left to be desired.

That and the really good cooking mechanics. Also woodcutting.

@@Thezuule1 I mean honestly.. Have you played retail WoW or most other mmos dungeons lately?
My problem with zenith is it's very clearly a dev team without a lot of real mmo experience deciding they were going to be the first "real" vrmmo, and just looking at the old #1 mmo for tips.
The game on release was so bare bones I felt ripped off. I'm glad to see they're still adding features, but I waited a year without seeing the 3rd class they were teasing in the release build, with I believe the only updates being "dungeons" and cooking(at a super rudimentary level)...
The team isn't working fast, reliably, and not even smartly. It's an ambitious game with a team with nowhere near enough skillset. It's a nice reminder of everything to not screw up for an actual team that's trying to make a real game.
I'm a massive mmo addict and I couldn't find a single hook to get me to grind in zenith... Hell I put more hours into a damn blacksmithing vr game than I have zenith, and I normally hate singleplayer experiences...(and this blacksmithing game is literally just a space inside a dungeon underground..)

I played WoW at a high level for a couple years in my earlier days. Tried to come back to vanilla at one point but it just wasn't there. Made it to about level 35 and just couldn't do it anymore. You can't go home again and all that.. I have to unfortunately agree with your take on this game. Seems like they have some skilled designers just skilled in the wrong areas to take on a project like this. It really lacks the hook to keep you coming back. I was really hoping the dungeon system was going to be it. I wanted an experience where I could log in, queue up, actually grind through a dungeon as a team with coordination and all this.. you know, dungeon crawling, and all I got was a really bad speed running experience where it seemed like it was every man for themselves.

I thought it would be nice to add in my two cents as a Zenith only creator.
There is a reason I have stuck with this game even when people ask me to branch out, there is nothing like this game, and it only takes one moment for a game to become viral, not only have we not seen that moment but I do believe it will come.
However the vision of the game won't make it popular, games like rec room didn't become popular because you could play frisbee, it's because you could do it with others. There needs to be way more focus on community, even if it doesn't expand the main game.
Ex: The game can be completed solo no problem expect for a few bosses / PvP has no support for any sort of leaderboard or competition and is hidden in the board game tab / Housing has no discoverability / There isn't any support for guild homes or any community areas
I love this game but I don't play it often unless I have a niche moment. 1.3 was great, as someone who doesn't want to grind dungeons for 50 hours, searching for rare creatures and building a house is what is fun to me, lot of creativity and replayability there.
I don't talk about my opinions of the game too much to keep my content decently formal but even though I stick with Zenith there are obvious flaws, and it's addressing those flaws that will improve the game.

Amazing video dude, my personal experience with the game is quite the opposite actually, but I havent played the game for like a year. Last time I played however I got bored very quickly, theres a lot to do, but nothing of you what you can do is particularly fun. Ive played 100 hours of beat saber, and 200 of pavlov. Those games might not be as big in scope as Zenith, but I think they do their job so well that it doesnt matter. Pavlov and Beat Saber really nail their mechanics, I feel like Zenith is trying to be so much more than it really is.
As someone who plays MMO's Zenith is by far the only game ive ever gotten truly bored of. I know they dont have the budget of some of the bigger MMO studios, but it just sucks becuase Zenith is a fantastic social platform, but the MMO part is just not great. I mean Ive never played a game with more boring combat and quests and ive played lots of MMOs.
I really want to like Zenith so you've convinced me to give it another go. This video is well put together so you earned yourself a sub :D
Just hoping I can enjoy it the same as you have! Zenith is 100% the best MMO in VR, but last time I played it it just felt like VR wasnt quite there yet, both with how dead the game was but also becuase of the mechanics. But im gonna be more open minded and try it again

I disagree with your point about beat saber. I TOTALLY agree that most vr games these days are basically an elevated tech demos. but beat saber is not one of them. yeah it's simple but so are other games like csgo, mario kart, hell even chess. its more about feeling complete rather than being complicated. beat saber takes what its trying to do and does it perfectly, theres nothing else needed. Other vr games often have a feeling of "...thats it?" which is the real problem

This video is an interesting perspective of someone who sees Zenith as a "VR social experience with extras" and not as as a full fledged RPG. Definitely not to say that point of view is wrong, but for people who look at it as a game first instead, there's a lot of other issues with it beyond just crafting and performance.
The best and worst thing about Zenith is the fact that it's a VR title (and available directly on Oculus). It's one of the few titles of it's kind in VR, but it makes development a lot more expensive and limited to a standalone headset's hardware, limited reach due to VR being expensive. They originally (and still do?) planned to bring it to Desktop, however the gameplay doesn't stand up to any other desktop MMORPG.
Combat is bland and repetitive, enemy AI is horrible and randomly walks away in the middle of melee combat or through walls, you can parry (not an explained mechanic) some telegraphed attacks and not others, the tutorial doesn't cover even 20% of the existing systems or even point to you how to reach them (for example in the video you had to explain to your new player friend how to grab the multitool as the game doesn't tell you, and unless you've played other VR games you're stuck).
It's a solid 4/10 game all things considered.

zenith is ok but replay value is low. I don't even think I made any videos of it and I only been posting videos for like seven months my favorite VR games right now are gun raiders, Blade & sorcery, zero caliber, and those are my top 3 picks The Walking Dead part one and part two could be great but they need more stuff to do they should put more side games in there. give it to mod io and have them creat some co op games. part one has survival mode but only 3 maps no updates or anything & part 2 is a hot mess I would not recommend buying it because they have never tried to fix it! The fact is the talent for making video games is not present in these no frill companies that work for meta. if blade sorcery had zenith size map and replaced all the enemies with enemies from that game that would be an awesome game it's like they see how good blade and sorcery is but it doesn't have any content in the game and that's the first game I bought meta should buy it from the creators and then use it to make 20 games out of what they created from that one game just like all the games that copied Fortnite or call of duty did but instead they waste money hiring people to talk good about games that suck. I'm not saying that's what's going on here I'm just saying I have hardly ever seen a video talk good about a VR game and then I played it and I was like yeah that guy was right .

This game has no progression visually. No progression mechanically. It gets stale so quickly because literally nothing changes except the area you are in.

Tldr: this is a fun game that is worth the buy in price. The devs aren't great about fixing bugs, but if you make friends with a late game player, you will be able to side step the major annoyances. One thing the devs are very focused on is expansion of the game, so if nothing else you have lots to do.
The biggest thing is that you need to find someone who knows the game early on. There are a lot of bugs that can soft block new players, and even though they've been around for ages, the devs are slow to do anything about it.
A prime example is the traveling merchant in skyland. The hut needs to be built like many other things by contributing resources you collect in the game. I repeatedly fed resources, some rare, some not, to this damn hut and have nothing to show for it. It was to the point I was about to quit the game for the second time to shelve it for another few months to give the devs time to work on it, when a friendly player ran by and helped me out. The problem being, there are some buildings in the area that are time locked and you do have to keep feeding them resources to use them. This was not one of those buildings, but there was nothing differentiating it from the other so until a more knowledgeable player took pity on me and corrected my ways, I was doomed to waste materials I didn't know the value of yet.
This is one of many such bugs that can easily end your playthrough with a very negative impression of the game. However it was this mishap that also led me to one of the better parts of this game, the community. I was playing solo as I tend to do with a lot of MMOs so I can get a feel for the mechanics myself, but given the current state of the game this is just not advisable. Luckily there is a fairly friendly community and given the devs utilize the toxmod system, they are generally respectful and helpful. You will get the odd 10 year old spewing obscenities or being intentionally annoying, but the game has a built in ignore, block, and reporting system that allows you to mute players at the click of a button. Thankfully due to this system and the genuine love most players have for this game, the former is more common than the latter.
All in all, as the the reviewer stated, this is a big game, but not a pretty one. You certainly have a lot to do, but as with most MMOs, a lot of it is busy work. The benefit to playing a VRMMO though, is that you are experiencing it all in first person, and with your own "hands". The fighting systems specifically are pretty well flushed out at this point and can get pretty fun in later game aspects like raids and dungeons. As with any VR game there are struggles outside of the ones the game intentionally throws at you like tracking issues and hitbox interactions, but overall it is an engaging experience.

If only custom songs were available or easily accessible on Quest. You could only play Guitar Hero for so long until you’ve seen all there is to it. Even adding songs doesn’t change the core experience that drastically. And in a medium as limitless as VR, I think there is the potential for way deeper experiences. Beat Saber is inarguably the best at what it does, it’s just that what it does is very limited in scope.

The main character then continues to exploit the entire world and gets 1000000's of Yen like no one else. It’s just that virtual reality is capable of presenting much more in-depth and immersive experiences. Entire WORLDS to explore, objects to interact with, stories to be told. Why limit yourself to standing in one place slicing blocks? Fruit Ninja is also fun but it’s no Skyrim.

-The basics are not good: Walking is not smooth, gluiding is bugged right now and let's you very slowly falling with almost no movement
-Enemies are worse that a beginner unity demo
-UI is messy and not dessigned correctly for VR.
-Textures, NPCs, and visuals in general are too low quality(The ambientance is not super bad, but each element on its own is very bad)

I must both agree and disagree with you on this game.
Zenith... had a great idea, but implemented it really poorly. The UI is messy and feels like it was made for a flatscreen game. There is a lot of glitches, (a friend of mine was continiously falling off the world, i was seing bodyless people constantly and more). The PVE feels horrible, there is no impact to it, you are just hitting non stop and there is no difficulty to it whatsoever.
It is just not immersive at all, from the UI to the combat and limited interactions with the world. Half of the time you don't know what are you doing or where are you headed. The new tutorial island is the worst area of the game and that is supposed to introduce you to the game itself... Honestly it was so dissapointing that i bought it for nothing.
I would argue that the best social experience that you can get in VR would be VRChat. I have tried every single social vr game/platform to this point and VRChat is the only one that I keep returning to.
The craziest thing about it is that people are developing games within it, there is a literal recreation of SAO being developed in this moment(Project Aincrad), and it is rough and still early, it has a big portion of the area of begginings done, the UI functions just like in the anime, and there is combat though it is as simple and glitchy as in Zenith for now. But that is just one of the millions of user created worlds that you can find in VRChat.
    Really suggest checking it out.
    Cheers!

I really don't know why there are not more games like this. It doesn't make much sense. I think what happened was when VR first came out with the quests 1 a lot of the players only played shorter VR games and separated the social and story driven aspects of games. I think a lot of the VR developers don't have budgets like the big flat screen developers therefore they had to choose the lane in which their game would go. I think this was a big mistake and bottlenecked most games... even to this day. I think that if they want VR to become as mainstream as normal flat screen games they need to start making bigger and better games. This will pull a much bigger crowd and the VR community can grow to the size which it should be. If you are a gamer and love flat screen games then VR is for you. They just don't know how much they will enjoy it because the games they see for VR don't reflect the games they play on Flat screen. I think if they had to do a VR version of zombies from COD with the easter eggs and all the other bells and whistles they will start to bring in a new market to the VR crowd.

I've only played DPS mage so maybe I'm missing something but there's no rotation or anything that seems to make sense. Abilities should stack and flow with one another. Cast X to lower defenses, hit Y to get a DOT going, spam Z to proc whatever while making sure to keep X and Y refreshed. Basic MMO combat 101 stuff. There's no crowd control abilities, no this triggers that, no anything you'd expect from combat in an MMO.
